This is song #2 from the second and final album by the progressive metal supergroup Sons of Apollo.

It released two albums:

The band was formed in 2017 with:

Mike Portnoy - drums

Jeff Scott Soto - vocals

Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal - guitars

Mmm… Wait! Bumblefoot? (Ha ha. Err…) Was he clumsy? No. He was helping his wife study for her veterinary exams and in the process he learned about this bacterial infection. "The name went from being just the name of an album, to the name of a record label, to a band name, to eventually his name as a solo artist."

My point of interest for this song Wither to Black is that it was based on a riff written by Mr Bumblefoot - initially called Rushgarden - because it sounded like a mixture of Rush and Soundgarden.

[Yes, it does. Plus the vocals reference a 'modern day' in a line! Good to see Rush-inspired great music.]

Thinking again about twin sons of the twin Apollo Andrew and Aaron Minyard. Canonically never knowing their biological father. Aaron being premed and wanting to be a doctor. Andrew’s obsession with truth and honesty. Apollo is the god of youth and the protection of the young. How betrayed the twins would feel when they found out, how their divine father did not protect them from the people who were supposed to take care of them? Apollo as the god of the herd, Andrew taking in the monsters and protecting them like a flock.

After they come to Palmetto, and digest the information of their parentage, being able to move on and develop their skills. Andrew learning the bow and arrow, Aaron learning music and medicine, both of them finding comfort in each other and newfound siblings who they can share their joys and grief with around a campfire.

Thinking about son of Hermes Neil Josten. Growing up with a mother who stuck with the Butcher, a man so vile no monsters would come near. Mary praying, praying, praying for auburn hair and blue eyes, to need there to be no question of paternity. Thinking about how when they finally go on the run, Neil feels more at home than he ever did in Baltimore. The road is a comfort for him, not quite safe but secure in the rightness of movement. Being fast when he needs to get away, outrunning hands and bullets and knifes. Coming into his own as a thief, a pick pocket, always finding luck on his side. Realizing that he picks up and understands languages better than anyone else he knows. And when his mother’s body is burning and then the bones are buried in the California sea side, he gets a message on the wind, the speaker sounding familiar like a dream or a childhood friend - “You’ll be safe at Palmetto.”

Once Neil learns the truth, when he’s safe at Palmetto surrounded by people like him, I imagine how relieved he is to learn that the Butcher is not his father. He was a Wesninski only in name, and not in blood. Neil uses his God-given wit and cunning to take down Riko and the Nest. He is a permeable boundary that brings together the Monsters and the rest of the Foxes.

And, of course, he’s the fastest on the team.

Time flies by…

I cannot really deal right with the fact, that someday Apollo is alone without his friends in Camp, and he needs to watch them grow old and die. Knowing he is still there when all humanity has lost it and disdinguishes. At least he has Artemis for eternity by his side? Is a god, with the permission of Hades, allowed to see the dead in the Underworld? I dońt really think so, because if this were the case, the Hyazinth ……you know. Anyway who can uncover the deatils?
