Part 1: Ary's favourite releases of 2023
Before you ask, yes I know that Mitski and Sufjan Stevens released albums this year! I'm gonna go ahead and assume they're already on a lot of other people's lists! However, if you think I'm missing out on YOUR favourite album of 2023, let me know. If you're thinking: "63 albums isn't that many, I wish there were more" - you're in luck because there's a Part 2. Part 2 has a different (more pop? upbeat? accessible?) vibe. Don't think too hard about it...
The chart isn't ranked, just arranged in a way that looked nice to me. Metal, hardcore, rap, emo, skramz, bedroom pop and more!!!
Tumblr media
Here are Bandcamp links to all of the albums (for those not on BC there's a YouTube or Spotify link). Honestly I'm never quite sure what genre something is, but there's a lot of metal in any case.

Pillar of Light - Caldera
Doom/Sludge/Post-Metal from Detroit, Michigan, U.S.
Pillar of Light's music is weighty and drenched in melancholy, and amid all the pain and sorrow, they have found a way to project light and hope when all seems lost. Without this ponderous struggle, the backbreaking sludge/doom drudgery, any of the uplifting parts would lose meaning. As in life, both darkness and light have their place and one wouldn't be the same without the other. Pillar of Light is soul-crushingly heavy, pinning down the mortal with the endless weight of struggle and torment and at the same time, invariably, ensuring that there's enough humanity in it for one to see things through.
1. Wolf to Man 08:42 2. Leaving 06:46 3. Spared 09:38 4. Eden 03:03 5. Infernal Gaze 09:08 6. Unseeing 07:10 7. Certain End 11:13

No Sun Rises - Harmisod (full album, 2023)
Tumblr media
youtube
Hello again Networkers. Today we are exciting to review here a very special act that we're truly happy to have featured in the channel: the German five-piece post-black unit NO SUN RISES. Harmisod, their last work released back in September, will make you shiver in place whether you are familiar with their sound or not (for which if you're not, we really recommend going back in their discography!). Harmisod opens with a ghostly echo surrounding the listener as intro for the first song, NebellebeN. Sharp guitars with fast riffs and gnarly voice catches you immediately in this palindrome titled song, where the mist and life seem to find each other in line. Acoustic parts hold the song together making for great slower, appeased bridges in-between parts where it return to the moving aggression in a haunting result. While in moments like this starting song the album showcases a sound that really draws from a characteristic one within black metal, it quickly departs from there combining it with the impressive acoustic strings and additional instrumentation in its tapestry such as cello and violin adding a folk touch, as shown in the next song, Unter Tage (Regress), where there's also notable the guest vocalist completing a sensational listening so far to this point, just half of the record, holding the mood out of metal for a while until the song burst in the flame of fiery emotions again. Tanz im fahlen Lichte would be the next song, which keep its 8 minutes with metal, at moments complex and shifting in quick and rich movements helping it create a palpable atmosphere with a shoegaze kick. The album turns complete with the fourth song, In trockener Erde (Bury Me), putting everything we've seen before together one step beyond, with its own intro, making for the perfect way to close the album with the sound of the fireplace in the night and the evocative artwork presented for it. Of course you're invited to stay there with us, so don't miss this on this excellent album!

Yes please! Repost from @patricksouthpaw • Quick update! So, life has been pretty busy for me as of late. My family and I are in the process of moving into our new home & between that and work, my free time is very limited. Things will settle down soon though and I will be back creating shitty cellphone videos for your listening/viewing enjoyment. I also have a couple exciting things (at least for me) coming down the pipeline for later this year, so I’ll definitely be sharing here once they are ready. Anyways, I hope everyone is doing well! Here’s a shameless pedalboard shot just because. #templeaudio #korg #deathbyaudio #wilsoneffects #jptrfx #highwindamplification #diezelamplification #collisiondevices #fairfieldcircuitry #gamechangeraudio #cascadeeffects #simpleswitchfx #ebsflats #mogami #shoegaze #doomgaze #postmetal #ambientmusic #darkambientmusic #pedalboardsofactualdoom #stompboxtalkofficial #pedalhaven #rigshare #gearybusey #knowyourtone https://www.instagram.com/p/CosNjZsujAZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

OF THE MUSES: first single and video from "Senhal"
Welcome to the decadent and intimate OF THE MUSES universe with "I" the first single taken from "Senhal", the debut album out on My Kingdom Music on November 3, 2023. For the song the talented artist Giuseppe Briffa has edited an official video that you can see at https://youtu.be/PFd3OVHWgXQ
OF THE MUSES, a one-woman Blackgaze act headed by multi-instrumentalist Cristina Rombi, sing songs of grief and pain.  Musically, the Blackgaze can be considered the right place where her music lives, but elements from Doom, Black Metal, Post Metal and also Dreampop also play a quite prominent part in her unique sound that follows the steps of Alcest, Myrkur, Woods Of Desolation. The result is an intimate, decadent and exclusive Art that will allow OF THE MUSES to enter your soul in a furiously deep and confessional way like no one has ever done.

Hundred Year Old Man - Codespeaker
Date and Loc: Nov 26, Legends Edinburgh
Who: HYOM and Codespeaker are two flavours of a particular niche - atmospheric post-metal. Maybe slightly blackened unless that's some static in my speaker. They're Godspeed You! Black Emperor meets, uhh, death metal.
Why am I here: I'm here for two reasons - actually three reasons. 1 is that Codespeaker are on my radar because the fella from Iron Altar - who deposited one of the best sets I have ever attended directly on my head when they opened for Mastiff back in March, did so while wearing a Codespeaker t-shirt.
Second is because my gf works with two members of the band so it seems only polite to go.
And then third is because HYOM are in that very large category of bands who I know nothing about but on paper i'll like them because my first ever metal album was Cult of Luna's eternal kingdom and i am able to look at their graphic design choices and map that back onto an obvious and agreeable artistic lineage.
Solo: No im with beautiful girlfriend and we're rocking matching full of hell t-shirts (both mine).
Was it good: If you've ever been to Edinburgh microvenue legends - if you have ever walked past and smelled Edinburgh microvenue legends - you've got the vibe of this thing down pat. That was the gig.
Metal exists on a spectrum that runs from moshing to nodding. This was absolutely a nodder, which was always gonna be the case because post-metal. But Codespeaker frontman gave it a good go getting out and about and shouting at people in the crowd, which made things feel more lively and I think anyone who had their personal space violated was game for it really.
Going in knowing nothing, I learnt a lot about Hundred Year Old Man through the course of the show. Most importantly - there is no old man - the vocalist looks to be about 35.
There are actually several men and a woman - their combined ages are definitely more than one hundred. So I think it is more about having the hundred year old man vibe - slow and heavy but also wise - maybe with a really long beard - rather than a literal description. I hope there are some elderly gentlemen out there who would feel this band had done them, as their namesake, proud.
I spent some time during the instrumental passages of which there are a fair few reflecting on what rachel berry and kurt from Glee (I think with Wicked being out atm, the episode in which they have a battle of wills over who can better nail the defying gravity highnote has been up top in my mind) would make of all this. They would be initially shocked but the obvious attention to technique would win them round and we would see, in subsequent episodes of the show, the pair of them start to incorporate screams and growls into their rep and ultimately we would see them continue to explore the scene, perhaps ultimately covering 'waco horror' by burner in a halloween special.
Finally a shout-out to 'carthage' which was joint song of the night alongside something HYOM played which had a very nasty riff in but I don't know what the song is called (it was about rising as one or something).
Provisional hypothetical tier listing: A

Cataclasite - Varm luft over en døende krop (EP)
Instrumental/Funeral Doom Metal from Udine, Italy
"We take warmth for granted. Cold is just a lack of motion, the lack of a expectation in a future that won't be there for us, the lack of memories of our recent past. We all die and leave everyone we know, everyone we love, a grey day behind us, that cold that we won't even feel anymore. Warmth won't be there for them. It won't be there for us. Even if we want to believe in a burning hell, even if we leave behind a lasting legacy, a feeling in someone we once knew, we're gonna be cold, "be", not "feel". Feeling is warmth. Cold is nothing. We'll be cold. We'll be nothing"
1. Varm luft over en døende krop 27:50

"The fact is that Elena is irreplaceable. She is not 'just' an exceptional voice capable of conveying deep and luminous emotions, she is the very music of this project and - by the way - deserves greater recognition. I may have been unlucky, but I have never before met a more natural, true, wonderful and universally musical human being. She represents the difference between soul and body. Some people naturally dwell on her body, because Elena is beautiful, but I can say that her physical beauty pales before the depth of her wonderful soul". (Angelo Bergamini, 2023)
