sorry i'm on a Murderbot Diaries kick again so y'all are getting meta. thinking about that one scene in Network Effect that everyone talks about. you know, the “who the fuck are you” “this is nonstandard communication” aka the one where Three discovers the concept of eldritch horror for the first time. beautiful scene 10/10 no notes.

that being said i’m also thinking about a take i’ve seen a few times saying that ART was way scarier to Three than it was to Murderbot and like. I don’t think that’s completely true. not to say that ART wasn’t mean or scary to Three — being told that someone might peel away your organic parts piece by piece will in fact be terrifying any way you spin in.

but like. okay. ART and Three come to an understanding very quickly in NE, arguably quicker than Murderbot and ART in AC. and some of that is due to the difference in Murderbot and Three’s personalities, but i think a lot of that is due to how ART approaches each situation.

so like okay. when ART and Murderbot first meet, Murderbot is entirely a wildcard coming aboard ART, and ART responds the way you would to an unknown, unpredictable threat, i.e. with a blatant but somewhat ambiguous show of force. by dropping its walls ART is doing the equivalent of like. brandishing a powerful weapon in your face. it doesn't explicitly tell Murderbot that it will hurt it. in fact, the only things it says to Murderbot are to tell it that it knows that it's a rogue SecUnit and to warn Murderbot not to hack it. this is the type of approach you'd take with someone who you aren't sure even has the capacity to be reasoned with - it demonstrates that it could crush Murderbot like a bug, because this is the only thing it's confident Murderbot will respond to.

the problem with this, from Murderbot's POV, is that, because the threat is implied rather than explicitly stated, there's no reassurance that if Murderbot doesn't try to hack ART then ART will leave it alone in turn. in fact, it spends the moments after this interaction spiraling about what ART wants with it and whether ART specifically let it on board to torture or kill it. i don't think that was ART's intention with the threat, i think it genuinely did not have the context to realize that Murderbot would take the show of force more as a threat of imminent violence than as a warning against attacking it. but, since it didn't have that context, it approached that interaction like one would approach someone with whom you don't see as an equal and don't have any interest in reasoning with.

contrast that to how ART interacts with Three. on the surface, what it says is scarier. its threats are certainly more violent. but they are also explicitly stated if/then statements: if you hurt these humans, then i will do xyz to you. i do know that in mathematical logic there's still no guarantee made in if/then statements that the then won't come to pass regardless, but the specificity of both the threat and the guidelines provides Three with parameters to follow, and implies that if it does then no harm will come to it.

this was notable to me because ART speaks to Three like a person to be negotiated with from the beginning, and that's. well. because it knows enough by now to know that Three is a person, in a way that i'm not sure it knew about Murderbot before seeing Murderbot's memory files of the governor module. it knows before speaking to them that both Murderbot and Three are rogue SecUnits, but its understanding of what a rogue SecUnit is, what it is capable of, and what it might do has profoundly changed between two interactions. even in their first interaction ART treats Three like a person who may be capable of being dangerous, rather than like a loose cannon who could mindlessly commit violence at any minute.

A very, VERY basic doctors argument

since i’m always talking about kissing quinny’s pretty little face, i had a dad!quinn thought that’s far too cute to let go 🥺

Every time Quinn walks through the door, it’s like clockwork. You’d be there, wrapping him in a hug the second he stepped inside, no matter the outcome of the game — win, loss, or something in between. And especially after a road trip, when the exhaustion clung to him like a second skin, his shoulders heavy with travel and effort. It didn’t matter. You’d always tilt your face up to his, planting soft, sweet kisses on each of his cheeks like a quiet reminder: I missed you and I love you.

And Bug? She’s been watching. Always watching, perched on the couch or playing on the floor, her little eyes flicking up the second she hears the door open. It’s so normal to her now, so ingrained in her tiny world, that one day, it just seems to click in her little head: this is how you’re supposed to greet daddy.

So when Quinn comes home one evening, still shaking off the cold from outside, Bug doesn’t wait for you. She bolts across the room, her little arms outstretched, feet padding quickly against the floor as if she’s racing time itself. And when Quinn crouches down, his bag slipping off his shoulder, ready to scoop her up, she goes for it.

She cups his face in her tiny hands, her palms soft and warm against the chill lingering on his cheeks, and leans in with all the focus and determination her little body can muster. Her lips land squarely on his cheek with an exaggerated, dramatic press, pulling back just far enough to let out the most triumphant, enthusiastic "MWAH!" you've ever heard. It's loud, unapologetic, and full of love.

Quinn freezes for a second, caught between surprise and absolute delight. And then, just like that, his exhaustion melts away, replaced with a soft, almost disbelieving laugh.

Before he can say anything, she's already leaning in again, her giggles bubbling up as she presses another smacking kiss to his other cheek. Her little hands cling to him, her body wiggling with excitement, like she's absolutely delighted with herself. And Quinn? He's helpless, letting her pepper him with kisses, each one landing with a loud "mwah" as she giggles louder with each one.

To her, it's the most natural thing in the world. She's just doing what she's seen you do a million times before, giving him the same love you show him every time he comes home.

And from then on, it’s her thing. Every time Quinn walks through the door, she’s ready — arms out, lips puckered, waiting to deliver those big, noisy kisses. And Quinn would be eating it up. He'd lean down with a grin already tugging at his lips, pretending to count each kiss aloud as she smacked one cheek, then the other, again and again. One... two... three… He'd pause dramatically, tilting his face for another, then letting out an exaggerated groan as she giggled, her tiny hands gripping his face like she was holding him hostage for affection.

“Alright, Bug,” he’ll tease, ruffling her hair. “You’re gonna smooch my cheeks right off.”

Bug, of course, would dissolve into fits of laughter, shaking her head like it was the silliest thing she'd ever heard. "No, daddy," she'd insist, leaning back with her hands on her hips, her little face full of determination. "I'm making them better!"

And if you were anywhere nearby, you'd catch the way Quinn's face softened completely at that, his mock defeat melting into something much warmer as he pulled her into a hug.

"Alright, alright," he'd murmur, his lips pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "Thanks for taking care of me, Bug."

Back to the wall (Khaji protected), attached to the corner ceiling (where they can see everything and have a height advantage), and keeping Jaime as close to his usual sleeping position as possible (stomach sleeper).

You may be wondering ‘how is it this gets found out if Khaji makes sure they do it while Jaime is asleep?’ Welllll….

I just will never get used to elfshi's hands being Like That. But it's also kinda nice to see him and Izutsumi working along so nicely! Like, don't even get me started on how Izu is presented as the pickiest eater of the party (Marcille has been dethroned severely) and usually you'd see that presented as a Hassle, but here in DM, Senshi doesn't even bat an eye. He knows and respects Izutsumi's tastes and preferences and works his meals out around it! That's such a based thing for him to do. <3
