Ghoutober Day 26: Crossover

Kaneki gets partnered with a Guilmon - a Digimon which has a digital hazard marking, and "has the potential to protect or destroy the world". I've always felt that fit Kaneki well - challenging him to keep control of not only himself but his digimon too. I imagine his Guilmon would be quite a contrast to him - very childlike and happy and clingy. And I can see him having a female digimon partner. I think he'd take a while to adjust to having her around, but come to really like her. I'm not sure what digivolution line she would go down, but I know she would have to end up as Megidramon, at least as a dark digivolution, at some point.

Touka gets partnered with a Lunamon, down the traditional Lekismon > Crescemon > Dianamon line. I think her Lunamon would have this girly and sweet personality, the same personality that Touka DOES have herself but doesn't show often because of annoyance, safety, etc. But her Lunamon would also be very pro-fighting and be the first one of them to jump into battle. I think Touka would be really cautious about this strange creature that insists upon following her around and protecting her, but eventually really come to appreciate the fated partnership. After everyone she's lost, it's nice to finally have someone who will truly stay, someone who is literally bonded to her very soul.

Hide gets partnered with a Burgermon. I like the idea of him having a joke digimon, but then when he gets serious and finally fights, it turns out his digimon is incredibly powerful. Compared to Kaneki and Touka, I think him and his Burgermon would have very similar personalities and immediately bond. I'm not entirely sure on his digimon's line either. I know I want to use Nohemon for the Scarecrow reference, whether as an Armor or Adult level. And I'm considering co-opting Lopmon's line (Turuiemon > Andiramon > Cherubimon) for the bunny theme.

this is not directly related but i have actually imagined if light were in kaneki’s place before because it’s super interesting to me, because unlike kaneki, light barely hesitated to experiment with the death note, so i think when he realized what was going on, he’d be curious about the taste of human meat as well as his kagune. similar with the death note, probably gets power drunk with it and ends up a binge eater like rize.

addressing your ask now, light has a strong sense of justice, and pre death note acquisition, he also has a great deal of respect for “the system.” i can see him being pretty pro-CCG (i dont see this holding him back if he were in kaneki’s place though, i think his curiosity overcomes these factors).

on the other hand, while justice is still meaningful for L, he’s also more amusement oriented. also, he would view it less as an issue of justice and more as an issue of darwinism. to him, the conflict is not about right and wrong like it is for light, but about weak and strong species. because of that, i don’t think he’s particularly pro-ghoul or pro-CCG. he’s just observing to see which species comes out on top because it’s fun for him.

one tg character i think would have a really interesting perspective on kira is kaneki. i can see him either taking a matsuda-like perspective where he sees the benefits of taking out criminals, but still thinks its wrong.

eto is not pro or anti kira, she’s just curious about what’s going to happen. probably had the tv on 24/7 when the second kira and “kira” were communicating via sakura tv

touka and ayato would be strictly anti kira, they do not trust the concept of justice at all for obvious reasons, actually i think most ghouls fall into this category.

saiko is someone that interests me as well because on the one hand i can see her being pretty anti kira, and on the other hand i can see her being pro kira, and this is all based on her reaction and perspective shift after amon saves her, the lack of certainty is just me trying to explore all the possibilities and therefore being unable to keep consistent analogies in my head

the character i can most see supporting kira strongly is kureo mado, idk i just see him as the kind of person to think that cleaning up society is cleaning up society whether it’s done by the book or unconventionally

Koma: goes either way, he’s a pro at cuddling the homies

Shuu: little spoon but if anyone hugs him too hard all of his bones are shattering

Hinami: she’s one of those weird little flat plastic spoons on the top of those quarter cup ice creams you get at a gas station, she would rather perch on top of people like some sort of wretched bird

Itori: big spoon, her kagune can capture all and she wants to be able to continue gossiping very close to their ear

Yomo: big spoon, he doesn’t really have a preference but he runs hot and other people can use him like a heated blanket

Uta: napkin. He is crawling under or draping himself over people, he’s just a limp sack of bones

You know what would be interesting? A villain who is a psychic supremacist.

Because we see and hear about how psychics are prosecuted, and we do see the effects of that prosecution (cough cough Loboto cough cough) and different ways that prosecution manifests (cough cough Raz’s family or at least Dion Donatela and Frazie cough). But with all the anti-psychics, we never see a villain who’s pro-psychic, at least not TOO pro-psychic.

I have an idea for a villain who’s organization is very pro-psychic. However they also look down on non-psychics. They view psychics as better than non-psychics.

A particular example I use for inspiration is Touka Satomi’s speech at the Magia Record anime finale for season 1. There is a line about how magical girls make wishes for betterment of humanity (I can’t remember the exact wording) which leads to the thing line stuck out most to me in speech.

“You could argue that makes us more human.”

It’s kind of a similar-ish way of thinking for this villain. Since psychics can do things like read minds, feel other’s emotions, communicate with things that can’t normally be communicated with, like animals and plants. Psychics can reach into people better than the average non-psychic ever could.

So you could argue, Psychics see more human than regular humans.

It’s later revealed that said villain was faced with heavy amounts of prosecution for being psychic in the past, but instead of having internalized prosecution, they became determined to prove that psychics were just as good, no, BETTER than non-psychics.

Determined to show them all.

personally I feel like a psychic supervillain in general already comes with the caveat that most of them think of psychics or at least themselves as better than most other people

i get what you mean tho. its not an avenue id personally be very interested in exploring bc i dont care much to go "but what if the allegorically oppressed group... wanted to oppress the majority...!" but i do see merit in the idea of a specific character coming away from the setting with that mind set and exploring what that means for them and others, if the psychonauts could reason with them or resort to cool spy violence

It reminds me of that villain group from mob psycho 100 who i don't remember the name of, from season 1, who want to rule the world bc they feel psychics are owed their due. its got potential

New entry in the Creampie Deathmatch series featuring "Ramu", the icon of joshi pro wrestling. So, Mayu themed this time, though the gear is more of a... thematic match than a direct copy of any of her real gear. They also had a seen where they gagged her with the ball she always throws into the audience which was pretty creative.

Kind of bummed I couldn't find the actress' actual name listed anywhere, since I don't recognize her at all. I'd say overall this isn't in the highest tier of entries like the last one with Ayaka Mochizuki as not-Kamitani or Rinne Touka as not-Tam, but for one of the ones where the actress and costume are only sort-of a fit, the performance was really really good and overall it's still a solid to great entry.

This is a very mixed bag for me, though I tend to lean towards nah.

My opinions under cut for those who don’t want spoilers:

Pros:

I do like the characterizations of everyone, and it does a good job of portraying all the characters as well as they can given the short amount of screen time and the large cast of characters.

Some episodes really do hit hard. I loved the visualization of the girls’ traumas and how they do it in the abstract PMMM style. Mami’s mental breakdown is done beautifully and really coincides with what we know of her from the original series. Also Yachiyo and Mifuyu’s fight scene is SO good at conveying their conflicting feelings and emotions.

The show does a better job of explaining the consequences of the purification system to the magical girls. In the app game, it was only noted through the doppel pages how the use of them negatively impacted the magical girls, so it’s awesome to see it not being such a “perfect” system.

Cons:

The execution I find to be pretty sloppy, just in general. Season 1 had two major problems in this area: one, it glossed over witch fights, which to me was something I was REALLY looking forward to seeing. I wanna get to see the girls use their magic! Two, it had this REALLY bad issue of dropping key info AFTER the credits, when most people have stopped watching. This would lead to a heck of a lot of confusion in following episodes when events seemingly spring out of nowhere, but we’re actually explained post-credits (I have no idea why they chose to do this).

Season 2 brings with it more action, but I find that the action scenes are trying so hard to be fancy that it’s near impossible for the viewer to focus on what’s even happening. There should always be a focal point in attacks that helps the viewer to process the information and what’s most important, but yeah, really unfocused.

Maybe these next few gripes are more personal, but I hate the fact that Nemu is not on board with the Magius plan, knows the truth about what’s going on, and was guiding Iroha to her the whole time. Having Touka and Nemu being this power duo in the OG was such a cool thing to me. Two super geniuses who could not be swayed by emotional arguments made for very formidable foes, especially when you know that the magic system they utilize relies heavily on emotions. Not only that, but they were always one step ahead of the cast, always planning ahead, and is how things got to be as catastrophic as they were in the climax. Having Nemu no longer being that strong antagonist really makes the threat feel less impactful.

In the OG, I really liked how conniving Mifuyu was. She was always trying to manipulate others with a friendly facade, even pulling the girls away from each other to plant seeds of doubt in their minds. In the show, she just comes off as a rude B. I hated that the anime had her talk down Yachiyo in front of the others. It makes it way too easy for the cast to be like “no she was wrong, don’t listen to her Yachiyo!” Instead of Mifuyu pulling her to the side, then having the girls wonder what she said to Yachiyo to get her to suddenly become so distant.

Lastly, while I do like the addition of Kuroe and her personal struggles, I felt she was taking too much attention away from Iroha and the group. The struggles felt much more about her and Kuroe’s friendship than it did Iroha and Yachiyo’s friendship (Keep in mind I didn’t finish season 3, so take this part for what you will).

I’ll get off my soap box now, but those are my main thoughts about the Magia Record anime. I personally would recommend the manga over the anime, as it’s a much more faithful adaptation, but I wouldn’t classify the anime as horrible or anything. It’s just not as great as I was hoping it would be. There are certain episodes/scenes I might rewatch from time to time, but I wouldn’t really find myself sitting down to watch the whole show again.
