Some of my favourites from Inktober 2023. I decided to draw 1 cat species per day, in a couple of different styles. You can find all of them under the Inktober tag!

Phylogenetic wild cat tournament
Leopard cat lineage
Genus: Prionailurus
Depth: 10 (9 wins away from championship)
Two pleasantly weird-looking cats, both living around water in Southeast Asia and preying mostly on fish. (My favourite sentence of flat-headed cat's wikipedia page: "They have been observed to wash objects, raccoon-style.") The fishing cat shows the standard Prionailurus spots, while the flat-headed cat is the only non-spotted member of the genus. (It's still agouti, not solid colored - in domestic cat terms, this pattern would be called ticked tabby.)

[ID: a photo of a serval and a fishing cat, both focused on their heads. the serval is a tawny cat with small black spots and very big ears. the fishing cat is a brown cat with tabby-like facial markings and close-set eyes. it is staring into the camera. end ID]
Serval fun fact: Their ears are big. (Source: My eyes) In other news servals have been crossbred with domestic cats to create the savannah cat (Source: Wikipedia)
Fishing cat fun fact: They like to fish! (Source: I saw one at the zoo) Fishing cats kept in captivity have been observed dropping their food into the water for enrichment before they eat it! (Source: Smithsonian National Zoo)
#little cat showdown poll#serval#fishing cat#I hope you like these fun facts I thought about not including the second set

Febroary day 4 - Water Decided to draw some Fishing cats [Prionailurus viverrinus] The water was a real challenge, I also tried to make it so that the kitten has wet fur, which makes their hairs more spikey and their fur merges with the spots as if they are streaks of stripes. Not sure if I managed to portray that but good practice! Let me know what you think of this illustration, would love to hear your thoughts!

either prionailurus bengalensis (asian leopard cat) or prionailurus viverrinus (fishing cat)
#when theyre fresh like this it's hard to tell the two apart. the ears say fishing cat but the snout says leopard cat#yet another obligatory not a pet psa#though the modern domestic bengal cat breed does have some slight leopard cat ancestry.

Phylogenetic wild cat tournament
Leopard cat lineage
Genus: Prionailurus
Depth: 11 (10 wins away from championship)
After its win, here is a new challenger for the sunda leopard cat: the fishing cat! This little cat is much more robust than the leopard cat species, with smaller ears and eyes, shorter legs and overall larger size (it's the biggest species of the genus). The name is not a coincidence: the fishing cat is adapted to living in and around water, and its main prey is indeed fish.

Navigating the rise in conflicts between humans and fishing cats in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, rapid village expansion shrinks wetlands, forcing fishing cats (Prionailurus viverrinus) closer to humans. This triggers human-cat conflicts occurring every two weeks, with over half of them ending in a cat’s death. The main reason for the killings is fear. Locals often mistake fishing cats for tigers and feel threatened. Social pressure to participate […]
