it has arrived!! I had the absolute pleasure of binding @veryqueerdraws zoro/luffy comic Diamond Tiger and i can't believe it's finally made it!!! this was such a fun and unintentionally complex bind, and i'm very pleased with how it turned out. the pictured iteration is actually the third case i built and the second textblock i printed, so at a certain point this bind became like... a theseus's ship kinda book. very entertaining to make.
this is a skinny three-piece bradel (flat spine) style, probably my go-to with books of this length (and books with more involved multi-piece cover construction.) The book's endsheets are black and gold marbled red lokta, and the covers are made from a combination of that same paper and a flowery white-core scrapbook paper. The cover isn't layered and is instead comprised of 60+ individual pieces; I used the same principle for the back, though there were fewer pieces.
as you can see, the titling on the cover is the doujin's title itself, which isn't a font--it's part of the cover art and was drawn by @ozo-blog!! i couldn't find anything similar, and honestly? it's very lovely. it was pretty challenging to do (and ultimately resulted in the death of version two, may it rest in peace), but in the end it made such a neat effect and i'm super glad it worked out. i spent a fair bit of time fiddling around with a portion of the cover image in photoshop until I had a couple of clean sections of the title and then (several iterations later) made a stencil out of it. the final version took three layers: heat foiling by hand, gel ink (to yellow the color a little and fill in some gaps), and an outline layer of machine adhesive foil.
i think one more iteration would have given me a chance to perfect the different processes (ive since stopping using adhesive foil because u can see the smaller letters have a tendency to slide off into oblivion if you breathe wrong), and overall i think i learned more during this bind than i have in any other so far. i have "gained exp" and "leveled up", as they say. (just a little joke for the gamers in the audience)
i also made a multi-layered longstitch blank book for ozo!! this one went through a few iterations as well, and i think i ultimately succeeded in my goal of making something 1) lightweight 2) that lays flat no matter where you open it. It features a green black/gold marble lokta to compliment the red marble i used on diamond tiger and 24lb fill in white, black, and "kraft" brown. this was VERY fun to make, and i was almost completely perfect save for a moisture warp on one side of the cover. as with diamond tiger, i learned quite a lot and am overall very proud of how it turned out :3 i'll be making more journals and sketchbooks like this in the future, i can feel it.

Hi! I would like to try my hand at making my own ttrpg, but I have NO idea where to start, tbh.
Do you have any tips? Do you know of anywhere to discuss designing this stuff?
Hey that's super exciting! TTRPG design is a ton of fun and can be super rewarding!
So some general advice, based on what I've learned and also have heard from others.
Start small! Smaller than you think! Diving straight into the deep end with a big ol' fantasy heartbreaker is the road to never getting anything done. So scope out something that you know you can finish. Maybe that's a new class or playbook for a game you already like! Maybe it's an expansion or set of new subsystems! Maybe it's an adventure (though adventure writing can be it's own can of worms, but don't let that stop you hahaha)!
If you want to go bigger, maybe look at hacking a system or engine you like! I'm a huge fan of LUMEN as a fun to pick up and experiment with engine. Also, the LUMEN SRD (system reference document) is a very nice set of "how to do LUMEN games", which is very helpful. There's also other open systems/engines/SRDs like 24XX, Caltrop Core, and Breathless that could be great to look into. Powered by the Apocalypse and Forged in the Dark are both fantastic engines/systems to design in, but are also much harder to really get the hang of (and while Blades in the Dark does provide an SRD, it's a good rules reference, but not a great "how to" reference).
If at the end of all that, you decide on making your own bespoke system, go for it! See what happens! Try and figure out the focus on what you want your system to do (generalist games are always harder to make, imo), and then really dig into that. But I think starting with SRDs/hacks/expansions is going to be a way better start than trying to do everything from scratch.
Make something and don't worry about ever sharing it! This is also just general artistic/creative advice, but the first things you make prooooobably won't be your best and that's okay! I have loads of early design material and scraps that will never see the light of day, but working on them I learned a lot! If you do want to share things, it's fine to just share it with friends, you don't need to worry about publishing or any of that. Just remember to stay focused and work towards finishing something, because then you can start on the next thing. And the next thing after that! TTRPG design is a skill that takes practice. You can try focusing on one design idea in one project, and then work on a different design idea on the next to build up your skill set.
Play, read, and run a lot of different games! It's like with writing, the more you read, the better a writer you can start to become. You learn a lot about ttrpg design by interacting with ttrpgs. If you don't have regular groups to play/run things with, then try and read a lot of different games of all different systems and styles! All that you're absorbing is going to give you fuel for your own designs, and sometimes you learn something really cool from unexpected places (like, I could not have imagined the impact that learning about a lot of OSR design stuff would have on my own design, even though I don't consider myself a strictly OSR designer).
Don't worry about what other people are making! This is just the "two cakes meme", but even if you find out someone is working on something similar, it is always worthwhile to pursue your own vision.
This is getting long, so I'll wrap up that section and move on to the second question.
I think there's a pretty solid community of TTRPG designers here on tumblr these days, so you can try getting discussions going here! I also do a lot in various discord groups. I personally really like Plus One EXP which is very friendly to newcomers and has pretty active design discussions (I also publish some stuff in print through Plus One, full disclosure).
If you're looking for more spaces, asking around there probably wouldn't hurt either.

Phew! When I announced exp. 2601 I mentioned it was the ten year anniversary of Every Game I've Finished in 2024 and that it might be important, and here it is, a celebration of my last ten years of writing that you can buy as a book that you can own in your house. I didn't originally plan it this way! I intended to release Every Game I've Finished 14>24 as a (somewhat) quick and dirty ebook release, and I did the majority of the work at the beginning of the year pre-exp. 2601, but after realising it would only take a "little" more work to self-publish the book physically I decided if I was going to vanity press, I might as well do it for real.
Of course, it's taken a lot longer than I expected, but I finally have a proof in my hand that I'm satisfied with, and it really does look very nice.
Vanity press or not, there are a few vectors to this release. Firstly, if you've ever enjoyed any of my writing of the past ten years, here's a nice way to support me and either get a lovely physical or handy digital edition. Secondly, if you haven't, here's a way to immediately get fifty-two of the best articles I've written which you can peruse at your leisure.
Thirdly, I just honestly think that there should be a culture of criticism around games just as there is for literally every other art form, and I think that this book existing makes as much sense as, say Clive James On Television, so I'm just fucking going for it.
That all said, Every Game I've Finished 14>24 is being released on October 21st 2024, and is being released in print on Amazon. I'm no happier about this than you are, but it's the simplest method. I would love to offer copies here on Ko‑fi for launch day, but they (sneakily) give author copies a long lead time and (of course) it's impossible to compete with Amazon's postage rates.

i think its kind of funny how, because some operators have base restoring skills alongside their other facility based skills, you end up just cycling the same ops between their jobs and the dormitories. frostleaf kroos and skadi (haunted by gladiia) all engaged in parallel play for several hours printing exp records and now theyll keep parallel playing in the dormitory. midnight and catapult spent an entire shift eating gummys cooking and shes already preparing the grill in bed for them. a bunch of the control room ops have spent days in there stuck with kaltsit listening to hours upon hours of cat text and when they finally turn in for the day guess who the fuck is waiting for them, holding hands with amiya and keeping them trapped once more.

In Extremis is a game designed to make you feel powerful badass necromancer who resists death and turns it against their enemies. It uses the LUMEN system so combat is quick, engaging, and exciting; offering 50+ unique death-tinged and evolving spells, modular enemies, and guidance on how to keep things moving and fun on Hecate.

So that's house keeping and explaining the game! What's new though? I've sold this game for a while, and this isn't the first print ever, so what's exciting here?
Simply put it's better than ever! Partnering with Plus One Exp we were able to reprint the game in a new (more bookshelf friendly) format, and drive the price down fairly significantly! Which is great for the price, but why is it a 1.5e?
There's new content! To go alongside it's new formatting we have a few pages of new content including a new mechanic in the form of Death Rattles, spells your necromancers can blast off to damn their enemies even during their own death. There's also a huge number of balance patches, clarifications, spelling and grammar fixes, etc.
If you already owned the book, it's probably not worth the purchase unless you just like it's new shape or want some more copies for your friends, but if you've never picked it up before there's never been a better time!
Also I have so much free digital stuff for the game floating around out there! If you like the game already, Season of Discovery is so far 3 full expansions for the game, and it's totally free! It includes a bunch of new mechanics, new classes, new spells, new weapons, new enemies, and more!
Also because I'm here and tumblr doesn't have text limits I'm gonna give yall some hot gossip about what's coming next but like be cool about it

I was commissioned by Corsair to create a design for Pride month to potentially be used as a mousepad (and wallpaper)! 🌈 Here's what I came up with:
✨ Queer Exp. ✨ This piece aims to visualize and celebrate queer experiences and growth through the lens of classic video game elements. The 'queer' experience bar represents our shared experiences, the health and stat meters represent our resilience and diversity, and the inventory slots filled with potions represent all that we've gathered and created. It acts as a GUI level up screen for LGBTQ people, to zero in on that proud moment of growth and achievement that we all aim to reach again and again, despite the continued challenges we face both individually and as a community. It aims to remind us that no matter our "skill level" or where we are in our own lives, we can still have fun and enjoy the journey.
Unfortunately, it didn't end up getting printed, but hopefully it can be in the future. What do you think? Would you buy this?

I watched the end of evangelion in theaters last night. The last time I watched EoE was a near spiritual exp; I had been going thru a lot at home and needed catharsis, because I was personally grieving a lot of close relationships that had been hurting me, and could not stop feeling shitty for how I hurt my loved ones.
While that evening I had had the entirety of Eva fresh in my mind, and had sobbed accordingly to my heightened understanding and empathic ability, last night I did not. I had not prepared by rewatching the series or Death and Rebirth. It was a last minute chance that I took. I felt I had not "done" the experience properly.
I noticed so many details I hadn't before, thanks to the big screen: the name KAWORU printed on the EVA Series' S2 drives; how fitting it is that Kaworu (the ideal Shinji, the replacement for Asuka, the parallel of Rei) eviscerates Asuka. I also realised why Asuka has the bandage on her arm in the last scene, because her arm... ripped in two... and how insane is it, the arm that is iconically extended with "I'll kill you, I'll kill you" to be the same hand that reaches forward, as she's dying, to cup Shinji's cheek as he strangles her. I saw my favorite character, Rei, commit her revolt against Gendo. I absorbed everything on screen with greater clarity than I ever had before. The big screen magnified the details, the emotions, everything; and I realised with satisfaction that I was watching the movie the way it was supposed to be watched.
And as such, I think the most significant moment was in the actual theater itself. The scene in the film where they're in instrumentality and talking about dreams vs reality, and they pan to the irl audience of one of the first screenings of eoe? It hits different when YOU are in the theater. It's YOU on screen. I remember feeling like an individual and not at the same time. I realised that everyone in the movie theater was there for the same reason as me: for virtue of being human, having a deep connection w the series like me, having their own reconciling with the awe of seeing it in theaters; after all, all the young kids had streamed this movie on the phone like me, and all the older fellows had not been to an Eva screening in North America. We WERE the first audience seeing the movie, just like in the film; we had all gathered here with our rei plushies and our t-shirts and our cosplays like the audience in 1997. But would we be sitting there confused, like that initial audience was?
As it was, there is no sense of confusion in as an eva fan, not after the End. As the film ended, Shinji crying, Asuka still, Disgusting, and then the end card, there was a full 15 seconds of silence as the lights slowly came on. No clapping. No discussion. No laughter or sniffling or breath. The lights came on, and still, I was silent; I was both praying no one would break the silence as I needed it and observed it. I was completely processing the gravity of being the first (N. American) audience (ever!) since the show aired nearly thirty years ago; and with that weight, how SHOULD you react? And then, the silence broke as I heard people take shaky exhales like they had been crying, chuckling nervously, and then more comfortably laughing to their groups, beginning lore explanations--- someone had a beer snuck into the theater that I only noticed when I looked in front of me--- and everyone re-became themselves, imdividuals with lives and problems and things to be excited over. A couple was still crying and were not holding hands. I saw them outside, twenty minutes later, smiling and taking pictures with the poster.
It seemed strange to me that Eva had become such an emotional thing to such a crowd of people. I didn't realise that I was not the only one who cried tears of horror, who cried tears of disgust, who cried tears of sorrow. I had been excited to go to this movie and was left feeling... normal. It was life-changing, but also, not. I was just a person in a theater, and yet, I understood the movie because I had studied it. And so had everyone else, and we were still crying. At the same time, having reflected on my more private viewings, I still thought I hadn't cried enough.
I think to the things Hideako Anno has said about eva; how it's him on screen, his disdain for certain kinds of anime fans, his passing interest in things that people hyperanalyze. I think about the dedication he notes to his team of workers and five women in his life. Who are those five women? What kind of women are they? Why that descriptor, if you're separating them from your work?
I think the most appropriate explanation for my absurd reactions to the film are because the film itself is an absurd experience; I'm trying to assign it an aura (a la "art in the age of mechanical reproduction") but frankly, I believe it is impossible. Perhaps my theater wasn't right. Perhaps my company wasn't. Perhaps I was not. Perhaps the film was not. And most of all, perhaps it was okay for me to be there, because I wanted to be there, and I wanted to go on.
It was a really beautiful experience. The movie is absolutely meant to be played on a big screen, in a theater. I'm so glad I was there, and I'm so glad I got to be apart of eva history. It was not the perfect exp I wanted, but it was such a special occasion that I don't mind too much. One day I will keep going and maybe I will make that experience perfect for myself.

Wrote the whole ass Au Idea out of these two on twitter so like might as well copy and paste it in here,,,
A Vinzack AU idea where Vin is a half dragon and Zack is a human. This is set in a modern setting,,, a lovely thread,,, If there are spelling mistakes, just ignore them because my tired ass does not wanna fix them or notice them, thank you and enjoy
So like Jhigh decides that they are going to take a trip to this old temple/kindom that is now used as an tourist attraction like somewhere far away. But everyone has to rent at least the top part of the hanbok to seem respectful to their own culture when they visit
(they actually would've had to pay for a fee but you get to go free if you have an hanbok on and everyone decided that was more fun) so like as they are on their way there. Vin realizes that the place is what Vin's childhood palace should've been until things happened and now
that place is a tourist attraction. Vin could've been raised there since he had the dragon in him but instead he was raised in Cheonliang with his mom being a dragon and his dad being a regular human. so like vin was half pissed off when the buss had parked them pretty far away
from the place. Vin also was the only one who had not rented an hanbok because he could just go to the closest gas station's bathroom and transform his dragon hanbok on and hike his way to the place and pay for nothing. So Vin did do that. But Vin was surprised when he got out of
the stall to see zack angrily stare at himself through the mirror and then it hit Vin that Zack had a grey hanbok, a commoners' hanbok. Vin was about to tease Zack when Zack just walked out of the bathroom not wanting to deal with Vin but Zack had forgot his gat(the korean hat)
by the sink and then vin picked it up and started to go after Zack. They both are now separated from their friend groups since they went to the bathroom and told them they can go ahead and not wait for them. Zack just needed some fresh air since Zoe had made some silly comments
about the hanbok and zack overdramtazied the situation and had to blow out some steam. fucking drama queen zack. Anygay, Vin started to go after Zack and he caught up to him and told Zack to stay in place as he started to put on the gat on Zack and tying the bow. they bickered
as they got up to the palace/temple/fuck idk im tired, they didn't even try to find their friend group as there were a lot of people and it seemed so hard to find them in all of the mess, so Vin just decided to explore the place with his gut feeling and zack followed him
as zack was following Vin, he noticed that Vin also had the traditional shoes and the pants. Then Zack took a even closer look and noticed all the jewerly and extra stuff on Vin. Zack then asked where Vin had rented his outfit and vin half lied that his mom had made it
as Zack was taking a closer inspection on the decoration of the prints, zack didn't notice he was about to go through a wall with Vin. But to Vin it looked like an open room. The staff of the place was watching Vin because of his outfit went pale when the two went through a wall
the staff member then blamed it on seeing things. Meanwhile when they entered the room, suddenly there was a tail in front of Zack's face and Zack grabbed onto it not knowing it was Vin's tail. Vin's half dragon form was exposed out in the open in that room as the dragon spirit
coughed as they took a giant form of a physical dragon. Then their both's attention turned into a dragon as the dragon had a very judging look. "Not another of my people wanting to get my blessing on their marriage with a commoner! Why can't my kind get with the rich sometimes!"
the only word vin understood in that moment was that the dragon calling zack poor so vin corrected the dragon that Zack actually was rich but he decided to rent grey and black stuff because he is such an loser and Zack was about to punch Vin and then they got into an argument
and zack kept telling vin not to ruin his expensive shoes or his watch and vin just kept telling zack how dumb he is. They were about to throw hands but stopped before they actually landed on each other. They were so heated in the moment that they did not fucking realize
that the dragon spirit fucking thinks they are about to get married and are getting a blessing from the above to grant some cool stuff. So, the dragon likes their dynamic and just says "Yeah, yeah, you can have my blessings, blah blah, you may now kiss your partner blah blah
let me get back to watching these tourists being hilarious idiots. please get out of my room to kiss, it's getting pretty annoying to see y'all kiss in my sacred personal space, byee!!" and then vin and zack get pushed out of the room and the same staff from earlier saw them
fly out of the wall and decided they needed some good fucking sleep. Both Vin and Zack cursed when they got up from the floor. As Zack was getting up, he noticed something on his ring finger. It was a red tattoo of a dragon wrapped around the finger like a ring, then zack turned
to look towards vin who was back to his fully human form. Vin had the same tattoo too. Zack started to scream all of it was Vin's fault and vin had no idea why zack was screaming at him until he showed the tattoo to vin and then vin went silent. Zack noticed that vin went silent
all of the sudden and was about to say something until vin spoke up and said "Since you are now a dragon's soul partner and have the blessing of the dragon, no evil spirit will ever get near you. Since you are scared of them or whatever. I'll leave you alone and lets pretend
this never happened" and vin starts walking off and zack just stands there wondering why vin gave up so easily on arguing when they both would always argue until someone else stopped them. (this thing happened before the sircus so vin's reasoning was that he believed zack would
never view vin as a soul partner because he is a murderer and his eyes) so zack continued to hide the tattoo with bandages not wanting to show off that he and vin have matching tattoos on the ring finger. Also the tattoo on the ring finger was harder to hide than the two
massive tattoos zack had above his ass and his happy trail area(the fuck is that thing called again?) and zack cursed really fucking loudly when he noticed them, meanwhile vin had gained an extra dick when he went back into his half dragon form and his horns where much more
larger. His tail was also much larger and longer, plus vin learned that now his tail was also acting out vin's emotions and vin had accidentally knocked over chairs when he got excited listening to duke's song. so vin tried to avoid letting his dragon side out but
it would hurt him if he stayed human way too long, so vin just had to suffer not getting too excited in his own home. As the time passed they actually never decided to address the whole thing until after the circus when zack learned more about vin, ok brain died im off to bed gn

New TWST JP functions
I’m thrilled by the new update especially with the 3rd anniversary right around the corner. But, as a twst jp player, I’ve noticed that no one is talking about the fine, small print detailing the conditions that must be met in order to use the new functions. There’s a lot that was explained in this new update. I will be covering some of this information.
I will be omitting the anniversary details and mission stamp cards. I jumped straight to the major updates, but I’ll go back and read the other news, and update this post accordingly if there is anything of relevance to mention.
Unlocking of “Photo 1” and “Photo 2”
When you unlock “Photo 1” and “Photo 2”, it can be created as furniture to be used in the guest room. (*Pictures of OOO will be limited to SSR cards.)
The following conditions are required to create “OOO Photo 1” and “OOO Photo 2”. Photo 1: Room rank 8 or higher. Photo 2: Room rank 8 or higher + Groovy. *Only Photo 2 will play voiced lines. **Only the character of the corresponding card can play the voiced line. Even if it’s the same character, if the costume is different, it is not playable.
Unlocking Duplicate Key
By handing over the duplicate key, the character of the corresponding card will permanently visit you. (*The corresponding character will visit the next time you enter the guest room.)
*A room rank of 12 or higher is required to use the “Duplicate Key” function. **Duplicate keys cannot be given to the same character more than once.
Magic 3 function
When you unlock MAGIC 3, you will be able to select and use 2 of your favorite 3 types of magic. (*MAGIC 3 will be released when you limit break a SSR card 3 times.)
*You can select any magic from the status screen or the battle formation screen.**If the support card has unlocked MAGIC 3, you can also select any magic. ***With the addition of MAGIC 3, the set sorting and filtering conditions have been reset. Settings will have to be reconfigured.
New Class + Skip function
Special Classes (permanent). [You will earn more EXP of card LV than normal class.] (*Special classes are not eligible for high-speed classes.)
High-speed classes. [If you use the skip function, classes will be completed automatically.] (*AP is consumed even in high-speed classes.)
*AP is required to take Special Classes and High-speed Classes. **Both classes can be taken up to 10 times a day. Reset will take place at 12:00AM the following day. ***The maximum number of high-speed classes is the same for all classes (regular/daily). Special classes are not included in high-speed classes.
SSR Guaranteed 200 Pulls Count
When the summoning gauge reaches 200, the pickup target of the showcase you are pulling from will be dropped.
*The maximum limit is 100 when there is no showcase such as normal summoning. **If there are multiple SSRs to be picked up, one will be dropped at random from among the pickups.
Shop Layout
Shop layout will be improved.
Changing the layout of the shop.
Adding detailed screens for cards, furniture, etc.
Adding stickers to room medal shop.
*Room rank 3 or higher will be added as a condition for exchanging various materials and paints sold at the Room Medal shop.
Top and Bottom layout to Guest Room Wall Decor
Guest Room wall decorations can now be arranged in a top and bottom layout.
*With the addition of the top and bottom layout, arrangement of existing wall decoration will be adjusted.
Guest Room Visits
You will be able to visit other players’ guest rooms. You can also “like” the guest rooms you visit, and earn room medals.
*“Likes” can be given 5 times per day. **Reset will occur at 12:00AM the following day.
Changing Guest Room BGM
You can now change the bgm of your guest room to your favorite bgm.
*To change BGM, it must be purchased at the Guest Room BGM shop. **To change BGM, room rank 10 or higher is required. ***Purchasable BGM will be updated according to the progress of the story.
Guest Room Character Voice Lines
Character voice lines will be added to the guest room.
*Guest room stories are not eligible for adding voices.
Improvement of Collection Battles
Performance of balance adjustment to collection battles.
Upgraded drop rate or dorm materials (SSR), etc.
Adjusted difficulty of some battles.
Adjusted the combination materials that can be obtained as rewards.
Addition of new missions
New missions such as card development, number of classes, number of test wins, etc. will be added to general missions.
New Title
A new title will be added that can be obtained when you collect 10 type of cards for each character.
