Sohail Anjum’s latest literary contribution, Urdu Sahafat Ke Frogh Mein Ghair Muslim Sahafiyon Ki Khidmaat, is a monumental exploration of an overlooked yet profoundly significant subject: the contributions of non-Muslim journalists in the evolution and growth of Urdu journalism. Published with the support of the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad Memorial Committee, this book is a valuable addition to the rich historiography of Urdu journalism and is an ode to its inclusive and secular ethos. The book carries a foreword by Dr. As'ad Farooqui, whose scholarly perspective sets the tone for the narrative. With the intention of promoting the culture of buying Urdu books, I managed to own a copy of the same by ordering it online, making payment and receiving it by post to my office address. Sohail Anjum is no new to me, I have often read his columns in Daily Urdu Inquilab editions of Delhi and Patna, and his review writing was a part of my translation of Dr Anwarul Haq’s Novel in Urdu. Sohail Anjum was born and brought up in historical district, Sant Kabir Nagar of Up having the degree of master’s from the prestigious AMU. He is currently associated with Voice of America, Urdu Services.
Dr Asad Faruqui ‘s specialization is in medical journalism in India and hence he adds a valuable point in this account by “This is obvious that all the communities of India have contributed to the promotion of Urdu. According to my personal study between 1855 and 1900, nearly 24 Medical Journals were published, out of which a significant number were edited by Non-Muslim Journalists who played a pivotal role in shaping the medical discourse of the time.” (Preface, pg No.21)
The book opens with a historical overview of Urdu journalism, tracing its origins back to Jam-e-Jahan Numa, the first Urdu newspaper published in 1822. Anjum elaborates on the unique cultural and political context that nurtured the growth of Urdu journalism, from its beginnings as a vehicle for disseminating information to its later role as an instrument of socio-political change. Sohail Anjum at the end of this chapter, discusses the religious journalism as well in which he says that the narrative of religious journalism was first introduced by Britishers to promote missionaries in India, and papers like Barhmanichal Magazine was only the reaction of it.
Sohail Anjum expertly weaves the narrative of Urdu journalism’s role in India’s freedom struggle and its post-independence challenges. He sheds light on the ethical and intellectual standards that shaped this profession, emphasizing the diversity and inclusivity of voices that contributed to its legacy. Anjum’s narrative underscores how Urdu journalism became a symbol of unity and a platform for dialogue in a multicultural society.
The heart of the book lies in its exploration of the contributions made by non-Muslim journalists, who embraced Urdu as their medium of expression and activism. Anjum offers a nuanced portrayal of these individuals, presenting them not merely as journalists but as visionaries and patriots. There are more than 60 figures of Urdu Journalisms who have been identified by Anjum to help him establish his point of Non-Muslim Urdu Media persons from Hari Hardatt, Munshi Nawal Kishore, Master Ramchandra, Lala Deenanath, Lala Lajpat Roy, Munshi Daya Narayan Nigam, Sardar Deewan Singh Maftoon, Jamna Das Akhtar, Fikr Tonsi to Balraj Menra and PP Maseeh. To understand the style and the way of biographical historiography in this book I am translating the shortest sketch from the and the smart readers like you will get the sense of other heroes without going into deep:
“Pandit Mukund Ram
Pandit Mukund Ram was born in Kashmir in 1828 and passed away in 1897. Among the newspapers that gained significant prominence in Lahore during the 19th century, two stood out: Paisa Akhbar and Akhbar-e-Aam. The latter was founded by Pandit Mukund Ram himself. Before venturing into journalism, he worked as a scribe at the Koh-i-Noor, a weekly newspaper edited by Munshi Harsukh Rai, in 1847. However, Mukund Ram harbored a deep desire to establish his own printing press. This ambition led him to set up a press under the name Mitra Vilas, through which he began publishing Hindi books. His two sons, Gopi Nath and Govind Sahay, assisted him in this endeavor.
Amidst these ventures, Mukund Ram developed an interest in publishing newspapers. In 1870, he launched Huma-e-Punjab. However, a year later, in 1871, he started Akhbar-e-Aam, which went on to achieve significant popularity. This newspaper played a crucial role in elevating the standards of Urdu journalism. Pandit Mukund Ram also published a Hindi newspaper titled Mitra Vilas, which gained considerable acclaim and was published for nearly two decades. Additionally, he founded an English newspaper, People's Journal, although it was Akhbar-e-Aam that brought him enduring fame.In 1861, he also launched a monthly magazine titled Baghawat-e-Hind from Agra.” (pg No.311)
The profiles of pioneering figures such as Hari Hardat and Munshi Sadasukh Lal, to whom the book is dedicated, are particularly striking. Anjum recounts how these individuals navigated a complex socio-political landscape, using Urdu to champion the causes of equality, justice, and reform. The book highlights their unwavering commitment to the language and its ethos, which often came at a personal cost. Indeed, Urdu Journalism has a rich history in India not only in terms of language but also in uniting the people in the name of national interest and calling them together to fight against the tyrant Britishers. I personally tried to sketch the forgotten story of Molvi Baqar, the first Indian martyred journalist in my short story titled as ‘Akhond’(The highly literate) in which I have portrayed Baqar’s journalistic contributions through Delhi Urdu Akhbar and his martyrdom by the Britishers. Interestingly, the story has been narrated by his Bonafide son Shamshul Olema, Maulana Mohammad Hussain Azad.
The section titled “The Galaxy of Non-Muslim Journalists” is a treasure trove of information. It profiles stalwarts like Shanti Narayan Bhatnagar, whose work in Swarajya exemplifies courage and resilience. By documenting their lives and contributions, Anjum brings to light the secular spirit that has been a cornerstone of Urdu journalism.
One of the strengths of Anjum’s writing is its ability to balance scholarly rigor with accessibility. While the book is deeply rooted in research, it is written in a style that appeals to a wide audience, from academics to general readers. The narrative is enriched with archival material, historical anecdotes, and critical insights, making it a comprehensive resource for students and researchers of Urdu literature and journalism.
Anjum also explores the stylistic evolution of Urdu journalism, analyzing its literary richness and its role in shaping public opinion. He discusses how non-Muslim journalists contributed to this stylistic evolution, bringing their unique perspectives and sensibilities to the craft.

i am paralized by choices fr, but i think what rhu said in their post was also true that books you read when you're a teenager stick the longest. unfortunately for me one of the major ones was harry potter from which i have relentlessly disassociated over time so now that feels like no way to introduce myself. anyway
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. look i know it's not even my favourite (yeah, shockingly, my favourite is Mansfield Park) one amongst all of the books she wrote, but this was the first one i read, the first one i thought of when i thought ✨romance✨. i shudder to call it enemies to lovers also because the dynamic is so unique and the subject of every author's envy since miss austen dropped this beat in 1813. also you guys have no idea how much of my personality is inspired by this one, i have simply invented myself through the yearning and love that austen put in me. i wrote my master's thesis on emma.
Uprooted by Naomi Novik. this book saved my life during my master's. i had just gone through three years of undergraduate, and anyone who has studied literature will tell you that studying literature kind of sucks the life out of it. to discover it again takes something, and naomi novik entered my life, looked me in the eye, and said, "you're gonna fuckin love this. enemies to lovers, beauty and the beast, language based magic system, everything you love." and i fuckin fell for it, i was changed dramatically, i read all of the new age fantasy fiction of the fantasy renaissance. as u can see im just a romance gal.
Milk Teeth by Amrita Mahale. i hesitate to put this because i only read it this year, but since it's been living rent free in my mind since, i suppose we will just have say it's one of Those Ones. im not even sure if this one is as well written as it could have been but there were so many moments that made me feel like the author was crawling into my own skin, so, you know. the protagonist of the story was so interesting, the premise was so interesting, the dilemma and the political decision was so well framed,,,,, it is simply living in my mind since then.
The House that BJ Built by Anuja Chauhan. its basic and i know everyone's favourite is Those Pricey Thakur Girls but this one also happened to me and it just ushered in new kinds of reading for me. i know this is an unpopular opinion but loving delhi is such a central part of me that it just feels good to read about someone who falls in love in this city. also the protagonist is my absolute favourite, Bonu has my whole heart. i know she has like problems, i remember @whatdoesthefuturebehold and i had like a chat about it, but i can't help it, it's just my jam,,,,
The Truth by Terry Pratchett. sorry for cheating a little but i love this one so much. it's just got the best of pratchett in it, everything i love. meditations on the social contract, a printing press, fun romps with newspapers and the state of our reading public. plus that standard terry pratchett flair of just. militant decency. i know it makes sense as a standalone, but, holy shit, i'd have loved a sequel. i also struggled so much between putting this or tiffany aching, but i think i covered loving witches in Uprooted so you know, figured i'd throw in my love for print cultures.

“Unbelievable.”
Arnav tossed the file onto the small table. Across the outdoor setting by the poolside, Aakash raised an eyebrow.
“Bhai?”
“The new secretary said this is the Mehta and Mehta file when she handed it to me. These are the Singhania documents.”
“I might have …” his brother rummaged through a stack of folders. “No, I don’t have it. But I do have the proofs for the calendar photos for you to review. The ones that were delayed.”
Arnav flicked through the file distractedly after accepting it.
A photo of Lisa toying suggestively with the hem of her dress, “Okay.”
Lisa pouting at the camera, “Okay.”
Khushi —
He stilled. The photographer had caught her looking straight into the lens, one hand raised to tuck her hair behind her ear. The image evoked a memory of the midnight tresses flying in an artificial breeze, unshed tears in her eyes. Tears he’d caused. The second image was of Khushi looking away from the camera. The smile on her lips was a revelation but his mind offered a memory as if in counterpoint; the plea in her eyes as she’d silently begged for reprieve from his intimidation.
And his body reacted as it had that night, desire pulsing through him as he imagined the pallu of her sari slipping to reveal the curves of her body.
“Oh wow,” Di had approached unnoticed. “Khushi modelled for our company?”
Arnav hastily closed the file as she dropped into a chair and continued.
“She looks so lovely, doesn’t she?”
She looks fucking beautiful.
As usual, Di didn’t require an answer.
“Chhote,” she drawled, throwing a mischievous smile in Aakash’s direction, “do you know what Nani would say if she saw you looking at these photos?”
Aakash opened his mouth as if to interrupt but Di didn’t see as she imitated Nani’s tone, “At least Chhote has moved on from that Kashyap lady and is looking at photos of other girls.”
Di’s teasing caused something brittle inside him to crack.
“We’re no longer together,” he said softly.
Aakash sighed, “Sorry, Di. I tried to tell you.”
His sister placed her hand on his arm, her eyes roving over his features, “Chhote, what happened that you’re suddenly saying this?”
“It’s fine, Di. We decided it was for the best.”
“Are you sure, Bhai?”
Arnav glanced at his brother, “Yes.”
The look Di and Aakash exchanged was laden with meaning.
“Chhote, you must have fought with Lavanya. These small tiffs don’t mean—”
“— We didn’t fight. We’re just not a couple anymore.”
“I’m worried about you,” his sister frowned, “I thought something was wrong when she didn’t come for the anniversary party. You can’t go through life so alone, Chhote. You need someone who understands you, who’ll be there for you.”
Arnav suppressed a noise of annoyance in this throat, “I don’t want to talk about this right now.”
“Okay, Bhai,” Aakash stood. “Di.”
Their sister followed reluctantly, pausing often to cast worried glances his way. When he was alone, Arnav slammed the photos onto the table and closed his eyes. Immediately, memories of that night attacked him. Khushi under the bright lights of the stage, her hair fluttering around her face. The red sari hugging her hips and the swell of her breasts.
His eyes snapped open.
Damn.
He’d tried to forget. He’d tried to ignore the business card that’d burned a hole in his pocket for the last three days.
Arnav Singh Raizada is not so weak that he cannot forget one girl.
And yet, he dreamt of her.
Not the soft-focus, desaturated memories that haunted his waking hours. These were raw, darkly sensual thoughts accompanied with vivid imagery of her skin, her hair, her lips. Her cries in the darkness as he took her over the edge of pleasure again and again. And again.
She held him in those dreams. Promised she’d never let go. And he found he could not stay away.
He made the first call two days later — minutes after waking — dialling the number printed on the business card before his thoughts could catch up to his actions. It rang unanswered until sense made him cut the call. And that should’ve been the end of it except that he tried again that afternoon. This time he ended the call midway through the first ring.
Then there were the pearls. He still wasn’t sure why he’d stored the relics of their first meeting in his cupboard, but he found himself toying with the small box more often than he’d ever admit. Sometimes they felt like a challenge — as if Khushi Kumari Gupta was taunting him from hundreds of kilometres away. Sometimes, they felt like weakness, as if he should’ve known better.
Sometimes, they felt like a promise.

News of the breakup travelled like wildfire in his home, so it was a surprise that Jija-ji waited until later in the week to knock on his door. Arnav paused in the middle of loosening his tie.
“No, I don’t want to talk about it.”
“That’s okay,” his brother-in-law gave a good-natured shrug.
Arnav watched in frozen amazement as the other man navigated the length of the room to settle on the edge of his bed. The injury Jija-ji had sustained on his trip was healing quickly, though he still used a walking stick for support. Rousing himself with a mental shake, Arnav flung off his tie and wrenched the top-most button on his shirt open.
“Calm down, Saale-Sahib.”
A sidelong glance at his Jija-ji as he rolled up the sleeves of his shirt, “Have you heard what Nani said? Is it so necessary that I start looking for a bride? Don’t my wishes carry any weight? I don’t want to marry. Nani will have to understand this.”
The tremble of Khushi’s bottom lip as she stared up at him flashed into his mind. He ignored it.
“Again with the same argument, Saale-Sahib,” Jija-ji sighed. “In her mind, there is no other way. And the community has begun whispering now that everyone knows that you were with Lavanya and broke it off.”
“I don’t care about what the community thinks.”
“But Nani needs to hold her head up high. You were together on Teej. People will ask questions.”
A storm of memories. Khushi in his arms, her head resting on his shoulder as he walked up the temple steps. His hand in her hair, her lips on the rim of the glass. A hollow in his chest, the ache of something left unsaid. The questions in her eyes as he took the puja thaal from her hands.
Arnav was saved from replying by the arrival of a tray of tea things in the hands of Jai-Prakash.
“I didn’t ask for that.”
“I asked for it,” Jija-ji smiled. “Place it here.��
Jai-Prakash grimaced an apology at Arnav as he set the tray down before leaving the room.
“Now, Saale-Sahib, the tea is here so you may as well have a cup,” a smiling gesture from Jija-ji. “Come and sit with me.”
Arnav wanted to growl at him, but there was too much respect in his heart for this man. He accepted the cup his brother-in-law offered and fiddled with its delicate handle as he spoke.
“It’s my life. You know me, you know my views on marriage aren’t those of others. I don’t want to get married because of societal pressure. Forget that, I don’t even believe in marriage.”
He sipped before continuing, “Everyone has their own views. My views are just as important to me as Nani’s. I want to live life my own way.”
“I know, Saale-Sahib,” Jija-ji made a placating gesture. “But isn’t it just as important to abide by the wishes of our elders? You can live your own life while respecting their desires. Try it her way for a while.”

Creation of the universe according to Science / The Big Bang Theory
Science explains the Universe is all about space and time which includes planets, stars, galaxies etc but does not have concrete information regarding the spatial size of the entire universe. At most science gives some figures based on observable universe which is estimated to be 93 billion light-years in diameter. This information is based on the cosmological model developed by ancient Greek and Indian Philosophers, some heliocentric model. This is the law of universal gravitation developed by Isac Newton and Copernicus and Johannes Kepler’s law of planetary motion and the observations by Tycho Brahe.
The Big Bang theory is considered to be the most prevalent description about the creation of the universe which explains that space and time emerged together 13.799 +/- 0.021 billion years ago and because of the inflationary epoch, some expansion of the particles happened which gradually cooled and it continued to expand with which subatomic particles and atoms were formed.
The ACDM model is the most widely accepted model of the universe according to science. There are many theories competing about the ultimate creation of the universe where even Physicists and Philosophers refuse to contemplate and they doubt if this information could ever be accessible. Scientists also talk about the multiverse hypothesis, where our earth/universe could be one among several universes that possibly exist.
These are all merely anticipations and baseless concepts. Their knowledge (Whatsoever) is confined until the creation of the earth. In the beginning, there was only one God. His name is God Kabir. The actual name of that God is ‘Kavirdev’. He used to reside in a place called ‘Anami (Anamay) Lok (region) Which is also called ‘Akah Lok. The Almighty GOD the creator of the universe (Brahamands) used to reside all alone there. Vedas address Him as ‘Kavirdev’and Quran as ‘Kabiran’. He is in the shape of a human. His body is very effulgent. All the souls (Atma) were contained in the body of that complete GOD (Purna Dhani) whose designated name is Anami Purush (Purush means God since God has created man in His form/image, similar to His own self, therefore, man is also known as ‘Purush’). In the same way, the Supreme God Kabir (Almighty KavirDev) himself appeared and created three other lower regions/places (Lok). The effulgence of one hair follicle of the Almighty God KavirDev (ie. Anami Purush) is more than the combined light of Sankh (Calculation) Suns.
Creation of Lower Loks
The Almighty God (KavirDev) later created Agam Lok, Alakh Lok and Satlok (these are the lower loks) with his word power (Shabd Shakti). The Almighty God (KavirDev) himself then appeared in Agam Lok as the Master (Lord) of Agam Lok. His title (position) there is Agam Purush ie. Agam Prabhu. Agam God’s human-like visible body is highly illuminated. The effulgence of whose one hair follicle is more than the combined light of Kharab (trillions calculation) Suns.
The Almighty God (KavirDev or Supreme God Kabir) himself then appeared in Alakh Lok as the Master (Lord) of Alakh Lok. His title (position) there is Alakh Purush’. Alakh God’s human-like visible body is self-illuminated, its very bright (swarjyoti). The effulgence of one hair follicle of His body is more than the combined light of Arab (Calculation) Suns.
This very Supreme God only appeared in ‘Satlok’ and there He himself is the master (Lord) of Satlok. His title (position) there is SatPurush (the Eternal/Immortal God). In fact, He only is known as Akaalmurti-Shabad Swaroopi Ram’ or calls Him Purna Brahm or Param Akshar Brahm. This SatPurush (God Kabir) KavirDev’s human-like visible body is highly illuminated and the brightness of one hair follicle is more than the combined light of crore (Calculation) Suns.
Creations in Satlok -
While appearing in the form of SatPurush (God Kabir-KavirDev) first did other creations in Satlok. With His word power (one Shabd) He created sixteen islands (dweeps). Then with sixteen words (Shabd), He made evident sixteen sons. He also created Mansarover (a very big lake) and He filled it with nectar. The names of His sixteen sons:-
1) Kurm 2) Gyani 3) Vivek 4) Tej 5) Sahaj 6) Santosh 7) Surati 8) Anand 9) Kshama 10) Nishkaam 11) Jalrangi 12) Achint 13) Prem 14) Dayal 15) Dhairya 16) Yogjit (Yog Santayan)
The Eternal God (SatPurush) amongst sixteen sons then entrusted Achint for the rest of Universe creation. He was given the order to create the creation and was provided the word power. With that word power Achint created ‘Akshar Purush (Param Brahm) with the word (Shabd) and asked him to help him in further creations in Satlok. Akshar Purush ie. this ParBrahm went to Mansarover (the lake filled with nectar) in Satlok to take bath there he started enjoying it and he fell asleep. He stayed there for a very long time and did not come out. In Satlok the body is not made up of five elements, there the life is not through breathing. Then Achint requested the Almighty God KavirDev to awake Akshar Purush from sleep. The Supreme GOD Kabir took some nectar from that Mansarover and made an egg out of it. In that egg, He inserted a soul and renounced that egg in the nectar water of Mansarover. The egg started sinking and its thunder-like voice disturbed the sound sleep of Akshar Purush and his sleep repealed due to which he got annoyed, he stared that egg with anger as ‘Who disturbed my sleep? Due to which the egg broke into two halves. From this egg came out this Brahm, a ‘Purush’ ie. Jyoti Swaroopi Niranjan (Kshar Purush). His real name is ‘Kael’ who later was known as ‘Kaal’. Then Satpurush (KavirDev) uttered Oracle (Aakashvaani) ‘You both come out, Akshar Purush you were in sleep, without you the creation work is not getting completed. In order to wake you, all this process is done and now both of you live in Achint’s dweep (Lok). Following the instructions of the Almighty God, both Akshar Purush and Kshar Purush (Kaal) started living in Achint’s dweep for a very long time. (This spectacle was done by God Kabir to teach them that without the Almighty nothing can be successful and also these foolish children should not crave for power).
Then the Supreme God KavirDev himself did entire creation with His word power (Shabd shakti). He created a Rajeshwari (Rashtri) Shakti with which all these Brahamands (elliptical regions) were established. (insert picture). This is also known as Parashakti / Paranandni. The Almighty KavirDev (Supreme God) then produced all the souls after this with His word power in His own form, in human form, the body of each soul is similar to God himself and the brightness of the body is equivalent to that of sixteen suns.
After a long time, mischief aroused in the mind of Kshar Purush (Jyoti Niranjan) that we three (Achint, Akshar Purush/Brahm and Kshar Purush) are living in one island (dweep) whereas all others are living independently in their own separate dweeps.
