I feel like I've developed somewhat of an ego (in a good way) but I've experienced so much false confidence I want to safely test it somehow. I want to be more resilient, I want my sense of self to be true and steadfast (but not unchangeable). I want to stand behind myself, be my own support and trust my decisions knowing it reflects my values and beliefs wholeheartedly and sincerely.
#words#i dont know where im at on the timeline of my development yet#i want to be me#finally#i want to enjoy being me#and i really have#up until being back in fucking prineville#with all of my old friends and family#its a major test for me#testing how ive grown and who ive become#and i come up to people i know#and i feel just like i did 2 years ago#it makes me feel pathetic#i dont want to wear my old mask anymore I want to dawn my new one#and MEAN it god damn it

On July 6, 1994, fourteen wildland firefighters gave their lives on Storm King Mountain during the South Canyon Fire near Glenwood Springs. Twelve firefighters were unable to outrun the blaze and perished. Two more helitack firefighters were also killed as they tried to flee to the northwest. Today marks the 30th anniversary of that event:
Prineville Hotshots: Kathi Beck, Tamera Bickett, Scott Blecha, Levi Brinkley, Douglas Dunbar, Terri Hagen, Bonnie Holtby, Rob Johnson, Jon Kelso
Missoula Smokejumper: Don Mackey
McCall Smokejumpers: Roger Roth, Jim Thrash
Helitack: Robert Browning, Jr., Richard Tyler
I now work in the district where this fire and these deaths occurred, and there is a lot being done to honor the 30th anniversary. I’ve met a handful of the survivors this year, and also hiked the memorial trail for the first time.
Halfway up the trail is an overlook that shows the whole fire line where this occurred, along with placards explaining the event. When I hiked it, I found that someone had left a little toy fire truck at that overlook, the truck staring out at the line.
I’ll never forget that little fire truck, nor the people it honors.

Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint, OR (No. 8)
Some of the Crooked River's drainage basin lies within the Ochoco National Forest and the Crooked River National Grassland. A 17.8-mile (28.6 km) stretch of the river, from the national grassland boundary to Dry Creek, was classified as a recreational part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System in 1988. Most of the North Fork Crooked River is also part of the wild and scenic system.
Bridges over the Crooked River include the Crooked River Railroad Bridge owned by BNSF Railway, the Rex T. Barber Veterans Memorial Bridge that carries U.S. Route 97, and a second railroad bridge that carries the city of Prineville railway.

As someone who lives in the PNW, how do you feel about hot/dry/flat places? Asking because I saw you mention a desert and personally I live in the PNW because I can't bring myself around to liking desert-y places (even though I respect them as distinct ecosystems!).
i ADORE the high desert. i haven't been in many other desert ecosystems! but the high desert is BEAUTIFUL and so vast and different from anything i grew up with. i grew up in a very cold forest in new hampshire and now i live in a temperate rainforest here in the PNW and the desert is!!! beautiful!!!
there's something about the craggy deserts and rolling hills and rich browns/oranges and wide-open sky that speaks Dearly to me. if you're not a desert kind of person but have a car, try driving to the east of the cascades on a clear night in the summer -- the mountains block out all the portland/seattle light pollution and you can see Forever.
my two favorite long-drive destinations (which are close enough to me in portland for a day trip, but too far to go without planning) are the prineville reservoir state park - which is a beautiful desert-and-lake destination by day & a dark sky park at night - and the warm springs reservation. i always stop to get frybread in warm springs when i'm passing through since it's delicious!
#replies#some people just don't really connect to really open skies and really open scrublands#wide plains and skies speak to me more than the forests in either home do honestly.#not sure i would want to live there permanently mostly because of the political hassle#(most high desert communities are republican-leaning and i left new hampshire specifically to get away from that)#but i LOOOVE being there.#travels#oregon
