Low key calypso could almost be a twisted take on the princess in the tower figure. A romantic heroine whose held hostage dreaming of romance, only for her to become the new jailor or the dragon

Like picture a version of Rapunzel where she couldn’t leave her tower and decided to trap the prince with her.

VBS But Make It Peaky

This started mostly from me joking when I first got into pjsekai that An was just Kyoko from D4DJ to the left, but then I actually thought about it for a minute. By this, I mean I asked myself "okay hypothetically, if they swapped universes, who would the other 3 be?" and by that point it was already too late for me to not start trying to worldbuild on the answers I came to, particularly with making VBS into Peaky.

For this, An is Kyoko given that comparison is what caused this. In my brainstorming I decided to go with Kohane as Shinobu here despite them being very different personalities (Akito would work far better personality wise and the AkiAn rivalry works very well for KyoShino) because I'm Normal about WTWG and An's inferiority complex plays interestingly here. Toya is Esora here because I feel like the two overlap somewhat on parental problems and the Rich Kid Experience and also while he lacks Esora's slight chaos gremlin tendencies I think his own somewhat blunt observational skills could work to similar impact. Akito is Yuka because he deserves to be a gym bro as a treat. He's also a complete foil to her in the sense that priorities aren't the issue for Akito, so it's interesting to flip that and have an Akito who questions his own devotion because he's kept up his other hobbies while also pursuing his dream of becoming the best and topping RAD Weekend.

I still have to think more about the full implications of it, particularly with what AkiToya has going here as I was mostly focusing on AnHane backstory, but this was what I came up with in Discord DMs

You know what's funny is that you can talk about the princess in the tower trope as one of disempowering women and encouraging archaic gender dynamics and I think conversations like that are important, even if at times the solutions to me seem superficial (and perhaps devalue ideas I think are important, e.g. a woman does not need to be violent to be 'equal', that's not the sufficient boundary of equity but it can be), but what always resonated with me was the idea that there was always someone who would try to help when someone was in need.

Maybe that's not the correct interpretation and maybe I came away with the wrong message, but it's interesting how sometimes you tilt your head a little and a different idea might emerge. I'm not strong and I can't fight my way out of all of my problems and I need help sometimes. Everybody needs help.

So there's an interesting conversation there about active characters and passive characters in fiction and what we perceive as being the 'more interesting' story that possibly transcends gender dynamics in some way... e.g. the reason we might portray an empowered female character as a warrior is because that is an accepted and celebrated masculine archetype and because according to most storytelling paradigms that's a way to push the story forward. Hopefully that makes sense lol. A princess in a tower is by virtue perceived to be less empowered actively in the narrative and the perspective of her as simply the boon after the trials can be problematic as well as maybe not exploring all of the ideas that I think could be interesting...

So as you can tell I enjoy the princess in the tower archetype as explored in R/WBY since it's not necessarily doing the 'give the girl a gun and it's all better'-type thinking, but there's a bit more balance, and it's as much a psychological/magical battle.

Guinevere started acting pained while I was in the hospital, first week of October. We had her checked, it seemed mild, she got NSAIDs. It got worse, we got x-rays, it looked like... confusing. Increased pain meds.

Thursday night. Guinevere cried almost all night. First thing Friday,, we were in Emergency at the university.

They... discounted her pain levels because she is tense around strangers, and so did not express pain for them to see. They therefore chose not to do further scans, and recommended 4-6 weeks crate rest. And trazodone, definitely trazodone.

We're trying it; I am afraid it is a mistake, because I think it started during unusual crating. But we'll try it. Today I can barely stay awake--I was not yet ready for an all-day visit somewhere, even in wheelchair--so Gwyn with her trazodone and I with my exhaustion are both being very still and quiet in our respective naps. Tomorrow may be different.
