Prince Waldemar and Prince George
Sometimes, the love story is where you least imagine it...
Prince Waldemar of Denmark (1858 -1939) and Prince George of Greece and Denmark (1869 - 1957)
Prince Waldemar of Denmark was the youngest son of King Christian IX and Queen Louise of Hesse-Kessel. Waldemar entered the naval college as a young man in 1879. He was passionate about the navy and had a lifelong naval career; he was Vice Admiral and Admiral of the Danish Fleet. He married Princess Marie of Orleans, a granddaughter of King Louis Phillipe of France; they had four sons and one daughter and remained married until Marie's untimely death. Marie was a very intelligent and unconventional woman, and her life needs to be told at greater length.
Prince George of Greece and Denmark was the second child of George I of Greece and his wife, Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna (the Queen of the Hellenes); Prince Waldemar was George I's youngest brother. Therefore, Waldemar was George of Greece and Denmark's uncle. When George I and his wife decided to enroll their son in the Naval college, they took George to live with Waldemar, an admiral in the Danish fleet. George developed a great attachment for his uncle, which continued until Waldemar's death. (Prince George of Greece and Denmark was the cousin who went on Tsarevich Nicholas' European tour and ran to his rescue when Nicholas was attacked in the streets of Japan.)
George of Greece and Denmark married Marie Bonaparte, a very unconventional, wealthy woman who at one point was a disciple of Sigmund Freud and who became a psychotherapist. They had two children and remained married until George's death. She is another woman who deserves a book to herself.
When George married, Waldemar came along on his honeymoon. George would often return to his uncle’s palace for visits. At the end of these visits, George would weep while Waldemar would grow ill, both dreading the pending separation from each other. To their own credit, both French Maries respected the oddly close relationship between uncle and nephew.
Waldemar and George flawlessly fulfilled their military and dynastic duties to their countries. Their wives learned to cope with the unusual situation. They were always well-loved by their extensive families and included in all activities of their many European royal relatives.
George of Greece died at eighty-eight, surviving Waldemar by 18 years. When Waldemar died he had been devastated and found great comfort in his wife; the couple's last years together were their best. George was buried at the Greek Royal burial grounds at Tatoi. He requested to be buried with his wedding ring, a lock of hair from Valdemar, a photo of Valdemar, and earth from Valdemar’s palace. His widow honored this request.(gcl)
Were Valdemar and George more than just nephew and uncle? Perhaps. Were they involved in a strong and loving relationship? Undoubtedly.

Which prospect do you think Has a higher chance with alexei ? Princess Ileana of Romania or Princess Elizabeth of Greece and Denmark?
Hi! Thanks for the question and I'm so sorry for the very late reply!
This is a difficult one to answer as it's all guesswork.
In terms of wider family relations, it appears that no one really liked Carol (I don't blame them!!) when they visited in 1913, and Queen Marie of Romania wasn't particularly enthusiastic about Alix in her memoirs. She also explicitly said that she did NOT want to have someone with haemophilia in her family due to the suffering it brings. She mentioned being concerned about Carol marrying one of OTMA because of the possibility they could be a carrier of the haemophilia gene. I don’t know if she knew that Alexei had haemophilia when she knew the Romanov family, but I think she might have avoided the match if she was aware. Although any of Alexei's children wouldn't have had haemophilia (only passes through the female line), the chance of him passing from a fatal attack at any moment certainly wouldn't be ideal for a marriage match.
Elizabeth and Alexei were very close in age, and there are some very sweet anecdotes about them meeting when they were children. Elizabeth's mother was Russian, which might have made the match more favourable. Also, they seemed to know each other far better than Alexei did Ileana, as Elizabeth and her family visited Russia pretty much yearly. Because of Marie of Romania's fears about haemophilia, and her dislike (and pitying) of Alix, I think that the match with Elizabeth would have been more favourable.
Which also brings up the fact that many boys that suffered from haemophilia sadly didn't live long into adulthood. Alix's brother Frittie passed away after an accident where he fell out of a window, and Henry of Prussia (Alix's nephew) passed away after falling off a chair. Tragically, most children died before they reached their teenage years. Some people with haemophilia lived considerably longer, though. Prince Waldemar of Prussia (a cousin) lived to age 59, until he passed away due to a lack of medical supplies for a blood transfusion. Alfonso of Spain died when he was 31 after a minor car crash caused internal bleeding, and his brother Gonzalo also passed away after a minor car accident, aged only 19. Most famously, Prince Leopold, son of Queen Victoria, died from a fall that resulted in cerebral haemorrhage.
We will never know for certain, I'm afraid, but those are my thoughts! What does anyone else think?

AWWH THIS IS SO HEARTWARMING🥺❤
Alexandra, Princess of Wales and some of the children of Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Germany, Victoria, Sophie and Waldemar, c. 1874.
They [the Prince and Princess of Wales] visited Fritz and Vicky, who told her mother; "I thought darling Alix in spite of all fatigues... looking very well - and lovelier than ever! My children went wild about her, and little Sophie would not leave her side, but followed her about like a little dog, calling her 'pretty Auntie'"

114 years since the Greek Orthodox marriage of the High Commissioner of the Cretan State of Denmark with Princess Maria (Bonaparte) of Greece and Denmark.
Prince George of Greece and Denmark (June 24, 1869 - November 25, 1957) was the second son and son of George I of Greece and Olga Konstantinovna of Russia. He served as High Commissioner of the Cretan State during its transition to independence from Ottoman rule and union with Greece.
Maria Bonaparte was a great-granddaughter of Emperor Napoleon I of France. She was the only child of Roland Napoléon Bonaparte, 6th Prince of Canino and Musignano and Marie-Félix Blanc. Her paternal grandfather was Prince Pierre Napoleon Bonaparte, son of Lucien Bonaparte, 1st Prince Musano of Canino and Napoleon's younger grandfather. was François Blanc, the principal real estate developer of Monte Carlo. From this side of her family, Marie inherited her large fortune
Several candidates for a future husband were presented or examined by Prince Rolando for his daughter's hand, most notably a distant cousin of Murat's royal house, Prince Herman of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenhower and Pope Loudo II. After a Parisian luncheon hosted by Prince Roland for King George I of Greece in September 1906, during which the king agreed on the prospect of a marriage between their children, Prince George of Greece and Denmark, the second of the king's five sons, was presented to Maria on July 19, 1907 at Bonaparte's house in Paris. He flirted with her for twenty-eight days, confessing that since 1883, George had not lived in his father's Greek court in Athens, but in the Bernstorff Palace near Copenhagen with Prince Valdemar of Denmark, his father's younger brother. The queen had taken the boy to Denmark to enlist him in the Royal Danish Navy and gave him to the care of Waldemar, who was the admiral of the Danish fleet. Feeling abandoned by his father in this case, George described to his fiancée the deep attachment he developed for his uncle. She admitted that, contrary to what she knew were her hopes, she could not commit to living permanently in France, as he was obliged to take up royal duties in Greece or on her behalf if asked to do so. As soon as his marriage proposal was accepted, the bride's father was surprised when George waived any contractual clause guaranteeing an allowance or inheritance from Marie. she would maintain and manage her own fortune (a trust earning 800,000 francs a year, her father leaving 60 million francs after his death in 1924) and only their future children would inherit.
On November 21, 1907 in Paris, Maria and George were married in a civil ceremony, with a subsequent Greek Orthodox ceremony on December 12, 1907, in Athens. She was later known as Princess George of Greece and Denmark.
In March 1908 Marie was pregnant and, as agreed, the couple returned to France to live. The couple had two children, Peter (1908-1980) and Eugénie (1910-1989).
