His family and the people he grew up with were cold, to say the least, so someone as warm and caring as you would be a welcome change of pace

Gilbert Qelsum was regarded as a genius. From the moment he ascended to the throne and made his first proclamation, there was no doubt that he was indeed, a paragon of genius. All his decisions were carefully thought and planned out, and carried out with pin-point accuracy. It may be said that his life’s purpose was to raise Qelsum to be the pinnacle of all kingdoms ever. His daughters had all married for this very purpose, and his son was to follow suit.

All was going well.

Until it wasn't.

For not even King Gilbert could have anticipated that the lady of Avari, whom Toa brought back, had unmatched and unchallenged power as the Creator's reincarnation.

“Sire!” A servant burst in, only to be met by a soul-piercing stare from eyes as icy as the coldest winter.

“Speak.”

“Y…Yes, Sire! We managed to track down Prince Toa and that woman, but they flew up into the sky! And…and Prince Toa had an aura around-

Another cold glare, and the door banged shut, the report fluttering to the ground.

What made it worse was that Gilbert knew, without a doubt, was that somewhere in the seven kingdoms, a woman with eyes the color of obsidian stone, was surely laughing somewhere up in the sky, far beyond the reach of anyone.

Good boy; good brother; good prince. I have heard these accolades countless times.

Today, I discovered they are worthless.

While walking in the palace, I heard raised voices coming from the throne room. Father is rarely cross, especially in any royal capacity. Curiosity got the better of me as I listened behind a crack in a nearby door.

“Do you have a plan?”

“My children are not pawns, Lord Tywin.” Father sat on the throne, his voice shaking with barely repressed rage. He took a breath before speaking in more composed tones. “They know their duty and do it well. Sherry is the people’s princess. Roy’s ancient magic is the greatest in Invidia’s history. He will lead our people to a prosperous future.”

“It is not enough!” Lord Tywin’s voice rose in pitch. “Prince Guy has magical prowess not seen since Vane. Prince Toa is close behind. Avari or Qelsum will crush our kingdom if given the chance.”

“Roy is to attend the Academy of Concordia soon. He’ll make allies with them. It’s a gift of his.”

“Avari and Qelsum value strength, not pretty words,” Lord Tywin sneered. “Prince Guy and Toa are hardened with wills of steel. Prince Roy must stand toe to toe with them, be like them, if we are to survive.”

“That is not the Invidian way. Nor Roy’s.” Father’s voice was low, rumbling with anger. His inflection then shifted, to one that was nearly pleading. “He is as tenacious as the other princes. Just in a different manner. I…will not ask him to be something he is not.” Father starred at Lord Tywin, hoping his words could make him see reason. “My son is a good man. That is enough.”

“Enough?” A bark of laughter echoed in the room. “You condemn Invidia to a future of submission and slaughter then,” spat Lord Tywin. “Unless—“

“I will hear your toxic words no more.” Father got up from the throne and began leaving. But Lord Tywin went on.

“Unless Princess Sherry were to marry.” Father stopped, his eyes flashing. “Many of the other lords agree with me. After all, there are multiple Avari princes to secure an alliance.”

“Sherry is not fully grown. Far too young for this conversation.” Father’s eyes narrowed. “I would have her follow her heart.”

“Why else have a daughter?” Lord Tywin scoffed. “Besides, you merely need to arrange a betrothal. They can consummate at a later date.”

“Enough!” Father strode quickly to the other man so that his face was inches from Lord Tywin’s. “I will not—“

“Your son or your daughter. One must make a sacrifice.”

I left my hiding spot, not wanting or needing to hear more.

Lord Tywin was right about some things. Father would not ask me to change. He is too kind to do so. That kindness is why Invidia and our people have prospered thus far.

But sacrifices must be made to ensure that prosperity continues.

I love Sherry’s smile. She is a blossom in full bloom. I will not be the cause of it wilting. If anyone should sacrifice or change, it should be me.

Good is not enough. That much is clear. Nothing less than perfection will suffice. I must be strong—To protect Sherry, father, Invidia.

To protect them all.

I am going to address the ridiculousness that occurred when a certain person wrote to me and said they were going to give me “edibles brownies”.

If this truly does happen, I shall bring down punishment on the guilty party. You know who you are.

I do not imbibe such substances and am certainly going to be keeping a close eye on you three, @boyslit, @atomsminecraft, and @fingerless-glovez. Perhaps Fenn as well.

Do not expect me to go lightly on you just because you are my students.

Okay but when are Avari and Qelsum going to realize they’d be stronger together? A team up between those kingdom and they could probably take the entire magical realm.

Deadass. Yes, their kingdoms have histories of animosity against each other. But from an outsider’s perspective, 1. Toa and Guy have more in common than they do differences, 2. They are in positions of power where they can directly interact with that history and influence the future. The two of them are at the exact intersection of individual personality and macroscopic situation where, with an ounce of insight (and honestly, a lot of therapy)— they could bury the hatchet.

In Toa’s route, we see him start to be his own person, as opposed to being solely what his family wanted. In guy’s route, we see the Avari crown price become less severe in his judgment, and more open to communication.

Take both of these changes and put them in the same story. Reconciliation is a reasonable conclusion.

As Toa gets more in touch with how he feels about his own family situation— realizing Avari’s upbringing much mirrors his own makes him more empathetic. Hesitantly, he starts to reach out in small ways, testing the waters, gathering more information to work from. He’s already broken several old walls of his, what are a few more? Curious, Toa questions even more of the old stories he came to believe about himself. Does he really have to compare himself to Guy, and base his value as a person on how he stacks up? If he is Toa Qelsum, not Toa of Qelsum, then what about Guy? Has he ever evaluated the man on the merits of himself? Has he ever even considered the question? Does he know who Guy Avari, not Guy of Avari, would be? No, he realizes. And so he investigates.

Before, Guy might not have been receptive to such attention from Toa. He’s have froze him out. Insult him as a way to create more distance between them. He would’ve worn the “Guy of Avari” moniker as a defense, because people getting to know him, the real him, is dangerous. Especially Toa.

But in this route? Guy’s mellowed out, a little. He’s still a cantankerous asshole, don’t worry. But he’s a cantankerous asshole whose a bit more willing to hear others out. Honestly, he probably thinks Toa is up to some scheme, at first. Definitely suspicious, Guy decides to interact anyways. He starts out more standoffish, really falling back on that cold and aloof persona he’s crafted over the years. But Toa doesn’t react like he usually does, and that gives Guy pause. No frosty glares from the Qelsum crown prince? Genuine responses, not perfect, rehearsed scripted lines? Because Toa displays that vulnerability, Guy feels more comfortable to do the same.

Tentatively, their conversations become more frequent, and less hostile. The insults become more like ribbing, banter. Bonding over mutual shit experiences, commiserating about pressure and expectations, they realize there are few people capable of understanding them as well as one another.

“They truly compared you to me?”

“You didn’t know?”

“I’d heard rumours, but…”

Guy trails off. It’s silent, until he speaks up again.

“No wonder you carry a such a formidable sense of determination about you.”

And thus, an unlikely friendship forms.

And that’s it. That’s the key: Their friendship. By seeing eachother as people, they are able to continue on in peace. The past is still the past. It cannot be discounted, and it shouldn’t be discounted. That being said, the history between their kingdoms was written by their predecessors, with their own relationships to one another. As princes, and eventually, as kings, they will have the same agency as their predecessors to decide the course their lives will take. And if achieving peace, friendships, and harmony is an option— well, why wouldn’t they do that?

Belle Izadore: Relationship Chart - Book 1

So, I always talk about how Belle hates everyone but the thing is, she’s more complicated than that and really doesn’t hate everyone. So, in hopes of getting her personality (or rather dynamics) straight, here is a list of how she feels about each character in Court of Darkness. These are her opinions of them from Book one of the princess path and with each book finished, I will make a new, updated chart.

In order of most liked to most hated.

Besties/Greatly Trusts:

Rio Voleri: In a world where it feels like everyone and everything is out to get Belle, Rio is the only person she trusts whole heartedly. He was the first person to show her genuine kindness and respect. Even if he were to find out about her magic, Belle feels as though he wouldn’t care or use her for it. Even so, she can’t trust him with her secret out of fear, but for everything else, he is one of the first people she will go to when things get tough.

Sherry Invidia: Belle’s second most trusted friend. She is the kindest, sweetest soul ever and Belle feels safe around her. Truly a girl’s girl (unlike some people). Belle isn’t too worried about Sherry finding out her magic cause she knows she’s too sweet to use her.

Violet Muller: Hasn’t talked to her since the ball, but Belle has the utmost respect for her. Despite how intimidatingly beautiful she seems, Violet is so kind and caring and Belle really likes that. Honestly, she solidified Belle’s respect for her when she kicked Fenn in the face. Someone had to do it and Belle wasn’t too mad it wasn’t her who did it.

Tino and Thoma: She didn’t really talk to them as much compared to the others, but from the small interactions she’s had with them, they both seem like sweet souls that mean well. Honestly she’d feel bad if anything happened to them.

Unsure:

Aquia Avari: She never talked to him but she honestly feels bad for him. He seems like a sweet guy and after seeing his interaction with Guy, all she sees is someone just wanting to talk with his brother. It breaks her heart. Honestly, he doesn’t deserve a brother like Guy.

Grayson Hotz: Only saw him with Roy once but he seems okay to Belle. Doesn’t talk a lot so she can’t make an opinion on him.

Headmaster Lou: Belle’s respectful towards him (mostly cause he’s the headmaster). She doesn’t know much about him and honestly, at this point, she doesn’t care. She just wants to get back home. And if he can help her out, then she’s happy.

Professor Hawke: he’s a teacher. that’s it for her.

Neutral/Is okay with but doesn’t trust

Lynt Akedia: In terms of being trustworthy or untrustworthy, Belle sees him right in the exact middle. She’s not afraid of him using her magic. Honestly it seems like he couldn’t be bothered, which she likes. However, he’s still one of the S rank princes and she doesn’t trust any of them. So she’s weary of him but has no problem being around him.

Toa Qelsum: Belle doesn’t like how rude and pompous he can be, but can see that there’s something more to him. There’s some sort of messy kindness he has about him that she likes. Honestly, she wants to trust him, but she can’t. Despite his attentiveness towards her, he was just as desperate for her magic as Guy was in the beginning and if weren’t for Guy stealing her kiss first, Toa would’ve. And it’s because of this that she can’t trust him.

Knight: He’s very… protective of Toa and honestly, Belle doesn’t have a problem with him. Despite how spiteful he can seem, she knows he’s only doing his job so she really doesn’t have a problem with him. She just doesn’t trust him for the sole fact that he’s Toa’s valet.

Roy Invidia: Belle actually really liked him at first. He seemed kind and caring and was actually willing to take her out to help make her feel better, which is more than what any of the other S ranks did for her. The thing is, the more they talked, the more she realized he was only trying to let her guard down so one day he could use her power. Even if that wasn’t the case, that’s what she got out of it. And she really did not like that. So far, he’s safe for now, but if he try’s to pull anything on her, he will end up on her hit list, which lately, has been increasing.

Jasper Lane: despite how respectful he seems, there’s just something about him that Belle doesn’t like. Mostly it’s just because he’s Guy’s valet, which he seems to trust whole heartedly. So if Guy trusts him, she most certainly can’t.

Hate:

Fenn Luxure: *spray bottle* No! Back off!

Guy Avari: She didn’t think there was anyone she could hate more than Fenn but he proved her wrong. He already started off bad by forcing a kiss on her when she first got here. But despite that, she could let it slide due to the rare compassion and mercy she would give to this situation. He had the decency to patch her up which earned him points. She still didn’t like him, but wasn’t going to bite his head. But what really solidified her hate for him was when she was saving the poor dragon. She gave him her magic so he could save the dragon, which they did. However, it was a trick. In that moment, he was the most dangerous thing in this whole, twisted world. She can never trust him and won’t let him use her again.
