Arranged
The first day back from the holidays and Ace was being called to meet with the new Prince and his parents. After his guard training Ace walked into the castle, sword still at his hip as he sighed. He hadn’t even been back a full day and he was already called for a meeting. ‘What did I even do.’ He thought to himself as he made it to the throne room. He knocked on the door politely and waited for an answer. When he heard the faintest ‘come in’ is when he stepped in to the room. He bowed to the King and Queen of the Mainland along with their son, Ethan. “Hello, your majesties, you asked for me.” He asked in the most controlled voice he could muster.
“Ace! Our favorite Cupid and Water Elemental.” The Queen said with a happy smile as Ethan just shook his head.
“He’s the only Cupid and Water Elemental you know.” He said in a sassy tone while his mother side eyed him with a glare.
“Don’t mind Ethan he’s just in a bit of a mood.” The King said with a strained smile. “I’ll cut to the chase. We wanted to offer you a proposition.”
“Oh? What is it?”
“You’re one of our best guards and loving and kind, so we feel like you’re the perfect fit for this.” Ace nodded urging them to go, curious as to what they were offering. “We want you to marry our son! It’s about time he was betrothed, other royals his age would have been married by now.” Ace’s eyes basically pop out of their sockets as he looks at the three.
“I’m s-sorry your majesty but I can’t accept. I bet there’s someone more suited and who the Prince will love and cherish to be with.” He said in the most polite manner possible.
“Oh, that’s sad...we were hoping you would accept, and all this would be a lot easier.” The Queen said with a sigh. “I’m sorry Ace but you simply can’t refuse, we spoke to your mothers, and they’re thrilled by the idea.”
“You’re lying! They would never agree to this!” Ace shook his head quickly as tears welled in his eyes. “I can’t, this isn’t fair!”
“Life isn’t fair.” The King said bluntly as he sighed sitting up straighter. “It’s either this or your spot in the Royal Guard is revoked. Now we’ll let you and Ethan have some time to talk.” The King said with finality as him and his wife stood up. He felt his whole world crumble, he was so lost that he didn’t notice the Prince in front of him until he grabbed his hands.
“I’m so sorry. Really, I am.” He had tears falling down his face. “My parents...I-I told them I didn’t want to get married. That I don’t feel romantically to anyone because I’m Aromantic...and t-they wouldn’t accept it. T-They’re more worried about lineage about the perfect image. Two people married with kids. That’s all they want, and they had to drag you along. I’m so sorry, I promise I’ll figure something out.” He practically was sobbing, pleading with Ace with his eyes. Ace just felt numb. He pulled his hands away and walked away.

Book 1 Chapter 20: Everything is Melancholy and Heartbroken
It was just the beginning of summer and the weather had not yet turned completely hot, so Kangxi ordered preparations be made to go beyond the Great Wall. Although trips happen outside the Forbidden City every year, I am very happy to go on them.
After all, once outside the Forbidden City, the rules are relaxed and the struggles seem far away. Riding horses, galloping under the blue sky and white clouds, enjoying the warm sunshine. The gentle wind and faint fragrance of green grass! I feel that life is still beautiful and my heart feels light.
There are the nine elder brothers also accompanying me outside the Great Wall this time. Included are the Prince, Fifth, Seventh, Eighth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth. Except for the occasional chat and laughter with Fourteenth, I avoided everyone else if I could. If I really couldn’t, I would greet and retreat as quick as politeness allowed.
These days seemed to be the quietest I had ever lived. When I wasn’t on duty, I was horse riding and swung about the grassland on my own. When I felt up to it, I galloped across the wild rolling grassland, when tired I lay against the horse allowing it to walk slowly.
Many times it was just me and the horse from the time the sun first rose to the time the sky was filled with the sunset. Chewing dried food and drinking water from a skin, enjoying the views and things here. Whole days would pass enjoyed in solitude.
“My sister spends all day with horses, she seems more and more unwilling to talk to people.” Yutan teased me with a smile.
I lowered my head grinning, thinking I didn’t even know when I had become like this. I remembered from childhood to adulthood I was a person who couldn’t stand loneliness. I had always wanted to surround myself with friends and stay in a group. When I had first come to work in Shenzhen I had no friends around me. I didn’t dare return home after work, I always hung out in bars. Even when I was in the Bei’le manor I wanted the maids to play with me, but I still sighed. Boring, boring! It seemed that I had never learned how to spend my time alone.
Time is easy to throw people away, the bananas turn green and cherries turn red. Between the turns of red and green I have quietly changed and started to enjoy the tranquility of being alone. In fact, if I could live this life peacefully, it will be my blessing.
This year both Prince Suwan Guarjia and Minmin were absent. Only Prince Heshu came to greet Kangxi. However, Minmin had sent a letter through Heshu. I was laughing even before I had finished the letter and fell back onto my blanket holding my stomach. The letter said, since bidding farewell in August last year, Prince Zuoying had not even returned to his own tribe. He had chased her all the way to their palace and moved in at the invitation of her mother. The letter was all about how Prince Zuoying followed her all day long, trying to please her, how she refused, how she put on airs to tease him, and how Prince Zuoying fought her in a battle of wits and courage. After reading her letter, it felt like Minmin was still unmoved. But her admiration and her inadvertent happiness were revealed between the lines.
I vaguely felt that this was Minmin’s star and Minmin wouldn’t miss him because prince Zuoying would not allow her to miss him. I seem to see their happiness waiting not too far away!
Holding the letter, I read it again and again and my mood became extremely good. I could finally see it next to me- a happy relationship between two people. There was no marriage, no coercion, no grievances, no interests. Just everything was him and her.
After reading the letter I ran out of the tent and took a horse out onto the prairie. I galloped smiling the whole way. Minmin’s happiness made me want to laugh with her. It wasn’t until I was tired that I slowed my horse and lay against it still smiling.
Suddenly I heard the sound of hoof beats. I opened my eyes and saw Eighth riding up slowly besides me. The smile on my face vanished and I sat up. While greeting him I said, “I still have some things to do. If lord Bei’le has no other instructions, I will retreat first.”
He stared at me and said quietly, “I have been watching you from the hillside just now. I haven’t seen you happy for such a long time.”
I didn’t know what to say and could only lower my head and remain silent. He looked into the distance and asked solemnly, “Have you really given up?”
“Let it go.” There was a dull pain in my heart, but I didn’t let it reflect on my face and kept calm.
“Do you have someone else in your heart?”
I knew he misunderstood so let him continue to misunderstand.
“No.” I replied lightly.
He stared at me sideways. “In three years you will be released from the palace. Are you willing to let father propose marriage to you?”
“Tomorrow will come and tomorrow be a worry. Nothing is up to me so why bother thinking about it?” I said casually. I bowed and turned to leave.
A sneer twisted the corner of his mouth and he waved his hand to let me go. I whipped my mount and rode away. Before riding too far, I saw Fourteenth reigning his horse on the hillside watching from a distance.
Thinking of bumping into him at a time like this, I was afraid he would scold me again because of his temper. So I pretended not to see him and rode back to stable my horse and walked back to my tent. I felt sour in my heart that I couldn’t express it. I bowed my head in silence.
“Ruoxi, what are you thinking about?” I suddenly heard while walking. Looking up I saw Heshu and the crown prince standing not too far away. I quickly knelt in greeting.
I don’t know if it is because of the jade pendant or Minmin but prince Heshu treats me very differently. He usually calls me by my first name just like Minmin and repeatedly tells me not to be so reserved and polite in front of him. But he said his thing and I did mine.
“I looked for you for a long time, but I didn’t even notice you.” Prince Heshu said with a smile.
“This servant was rude. Please punish me, Prince.” I smiled apologetically.
“It was just a joke. I don’t blame you and you rushed to apologize. Why are you still so cautious and polite? If Minmin were as half as good as you, Father and I wouldn’t have to worry so much. Now that you are serving in front of the emperor there is no chance. When you leave the palace in the future, I will take you to Mongolia to have some fun and change your temper.” He sighed.
The prince smiled and said, “There is no chance of that now. Royal father will take her every where with him where he goes. But in two or three years she will be old enough to leave the palace. And it will be time for Royal father to arrange a marriage. If I the prince want to invite you, I’m afraid I can’t invite one person.”
Prince Heshu smiled and didn’t answer.
Why was everyone so concerned about my marriage? It’s on everyone’s mind. You still think I’m not enough? Excuse me, remind me in a hurry? I don’t want to say any more and the corner of my mouth twitches. I smile and bow to leave. The prince smiled at me and motions for me to retreat. When the autumn wind began to blow, Kangxi decided to break camp and return to Beijing. Sitting in the carriage I thought the prince will be killed next year. I couldn’t help but sigh. Life would not be so easy next year and I must cheer up to face the palace storm. I also considered my possible wedding, which made me more worried. What on earth could I do?
September of the 50th year of Kangxi, Changchun Garden
After Kangxi returned from outside the Great Wall, he moved directly to Changchun Garden. It’s close to all the brothers’ manors and made it easier for everyone to come in and out.
Today I happened to run into Fourteenth. Seeing that he wasn’t busy, I stopped him and asked for details of what happened between Tenth and tenth Fujin. Since the last time Kangxi ordered all of his sons to accompany him to have fun in the Imperial Gardens.
Tenth had said he would be sick in the future, so I remembered. I had always wanted to ask Fourteenth for more details, but there was never a suitable opportunity. Either I’d forget about it, or, when I remembered, it wasn’t appropriate to ask.
“If we hadn’t known each other since childhood, I would have misunderstood you again! Where can I find someone else like you? You’re so concerned about the private affairs between a man and wife. I don’t know what you are thinking about all day long.” He laughed and said.
Still laughing, he told of the interesting things he encountered. As I listened, I thought that both of them were stubborn and short tempered. They can stand being angry and they are genuine people. They really are a pair of happy enemies living a noisy life.
We were laughing and chatting when Yutan ran forward anxiously. She greeted Fourteenth quickly and hesitated to speak to me.
“What happened?” I suppressed my smile and asked.
She glanced at Fourteenth and stared at me. “The crown prince…. The crown prince… and the live long lord want sister…. He asked the emperor for a marriage!”
My brain exploded with a bang and my legs felt weak. I was about to fall. Yutan quickly grabbed me. There was a buzzing in my ears. Yutan still seemed to be talking but I couldn’t hear her. I just thought, ‘what sin have I done that god shows me no mercy?’
When I came to my senses, I was sitting in my sitting room.
“Good sister! Please don’t scare me!” Yutan said while crying.
I weakly pointed to a tea cup and she quickly brought it over and let me take a few sips. I just felt confused and empty. I didn’t know what to do or think. So I casually asked, “Where is Fourteenth?”
“After hearing this, Fourteenth turned pale with rage and left. He only told me to guard and take good care of my sister.” She said.
She consoled me. “Sister, please don’t be impatient. The live long lord hasn’t nodded yet.”
I was still stunned. It couldn’t be like this. Things absolutely could not be like this!
“You carefully tell me everything that happened today, bit by bit, beginning to end. Even the look in the emperor’s eyes.” I told Yutan.
“After the prince arrived, Yunxiang ordered me to serve tea. When I brought the tea tray in, the prince was already kneeling in front of the emperor. ‘Ruoxi has already reached a marriageable age. She is gentle and polite in personality. She is outstanding in appearance and appearance, so I am bold and want to ask the emperor to make the decision and give her to me as my concubine.’ The emperor was silent for a long time before saying, ‘Ruoxi has been by my side for many years and has served me wholeheartedly. I also know it’s time for her to get married, but I’m getting older and I really need someone like her who is thoughtful and knows the truth in my heart. I want to keep her for a while and then give her advice on who to marry. Reward her with a generous dowery and allow her to marry in glory, not being in vein for serving me. Something unexpected happened today and I have to think about it.’ Then I served the tea and I had no reason to linger, so I had to withdraw. Because I was shocked at that time, and afraid that the emperor and the crown prince would get clues because of the abnormal expressions. I never dared raise my head, so I didn’t get to pay attention to their expressions.” Yutan said.
After careful consideration I can roughly understand what the crown prince was thinking. There were only three reasons: one is Kangxi, the other is the Mongolians, and the third is my father. Among them, the Mongolians factor a majority. Everyone in the dynasty knows that the crown prince is wanting to reconcile with the mongols to consolidate his position.
But I haven’t a clue about Kangxi’s thoughts. If he approves, what should I do? Do I really want to marry the prince or do I resist the decree? Do I really need to prepare three feet of white silk like Fourth said?
I know everyone’s ending but my own. Is this the ending that god has prepared for me? Thinking about it, I couldn’t help but feel sad and I couldn’t help but cry on my couch.
Yutan insisted on staying in my house at night.
“Don’t worry, go back! Are you really afraid I would hang myself from a beam at night? Since the live long lord hasn’t nodded, the matter hasn’t reached a dead end.” I said feebly. “Besides even if it did reach a dead end and I’m not willing to accept my fate. Please let me be alone.”
Yutan had no choice but to go back to her room after I finished speaking. I lay back thinking about this over and over again. And tears fell from my eyes. When I saw Tenth’s wedding ceremony I was filled with sadness and anger. I now realize it wasn’t only sadness and anger, but also utter despair.
I stood up in my clothes and walked slowly to the sweet smelling osmanthus tree. Recalling the prince’s past expressions and the way he had looked at Minmin, I felt extremely sick. I hugged the sweet scented tree, pressing my face against the bark and burst into tears.
Am I all wrong? Did my persistence end up harming myself? No matter whether it was Fourth or Eighth, or Tenth, it was better than marrying the prince! Fourth, Fourteenth, and Eighth have all reminded me, but I had always maintained a carefree mentality, thinking I still had a few years left. But I know while I don’t care about it, others did. And now I regret it. It’s too late.
As I thought and cried, the sky gradually lightened.
“Why is my sister only wearing single clothes?” Yutan screamed as she opened the door and stepped in the help me. As she touched my body, she shouted, “Oh my god! So hot! How long have you been standing outside?!”
She helped me lay down on the bed and wrapped me in a quilt. “Sister, if you can bear with me for a little longer, I will go find the prince and ask for a doctor.”
Yutan served me some medicine and I felt drowsy again. I said I was confused, but Yutan was in the room. I could clearly hear the noise in the room. Even though I was awake, my eyelids felt as heavy as mountains and I couldn’t keep them open. I don’t know how long I lay there. My throat felt smoky and I finally looked for some water.
I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. I felt like Yutan was sitting next to me. I couldn’t reminded her than my hands and feet were weak. I just frowned and cried out in pain.
“Want water?” A man’s voice asked. He picked me up and brought the cup to my mouth, and fed me little by little. After finishing drinking, he helped me lay back. He whispered in my ear, “Since royal father hasn’t issued a decree yet, things will take a turn for the better.”
Only then did I recognize Fourth’s voice. My heart felt sour and tears fell from the corners of my eyes. He wiped my tears away.
“Just listen to the doctor’s instructions and recover from your illness first. Don’t think about anything else. Yutan was taken away by my order and is expected to come back soon. You won’t wait too long.” He was ready to leave after that.
I don’t know where I got the strength from, but I grabbed his sleeve and refused to let go. Perhaps it was because I knew he would be the future emperor, Yongzheng. I blindly believed that if there was anyone in this world who could save me, it would be him.
He had no choice but to turn and sit back down, staring at me. I couldn’t speak. I had just shed tears.
“I told you so many truths earlier and you didn’t listen to a word of it. Now that something has happened you are finally pulling on my sleeve?” He said coldly.
That jolted me. He wasn’t the current emperor, but the future one. Then again, even if he has the means, why should he offend the prince for me? I let go of his sleeve and closed my eyes. Only tears remained at the corners.
He bent down and helped me wipe my eyes. “I can’t make promises to you now because I don’t even know if I can.” His deep voice rang in my ears. “The person who wants you, after all, is the prince. But don’t think I won’t care about you.” He covered me with the quilt and opened the door to leave.
After taking four doses of medicine, Yutan covered me with another quilt to make me sweat. By the second day the fever subsided and I felt quite awake, even though my head was still as heavy as a mountain. I hadn’t eaten anything yesterday, so by noon today, Yutan brought me some porridge and fed it to me. After finishing eating, she helped me wipe my face and packed up the food box and went out.
I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling thinking that if Kangxi really wanted to grant me a marriage, what could I do to prevent him from granting me to the crown prince. Knowing that the crown prince would be deposed next year, if I could wait until then, Kangxi wouldn’t grant the marriage. But if Kangxi was really interested how could I deny it for so long? While I was thinking about it, the door suddenly opened and I thought that Yutan had returned. I ignored it and kept moving forward with my thoughts.
“Looking better than yesterday.” A man’s voice said.
I quickly turned and saw Fourteenth standing by the bed and looking down at me. I tried to sit up but he stopped me.
“Just lie down. There is not a need for such etiquette.” He pulled a stool and sat next to me.
He was quiet a while and then leaned forward to whisper to me. “Do you know why the crown prince wants to marry you? Prince Suwan Guarjia asked Royal father to grant a marriage for Minmin to Prince Zuoying. The memorial just arrived today. He is quite well informed!” He gave a low snort. “I’ll tell you more about the twists and turns later. I just wanted to ask you, do you want to marry the prince?”
I shook my head.
“It’s not convenient for Eighth to come and see you now. He asked me to tell you to find a way to delay it in front of Royal father for a few days. In about ten days things should turn around.” He said.
I was shocked but happy at the same time. I just stared at Fourteenth.
“Thank you.” I said with a tearful voice. He nodded firmly.
“Why is your voice so burned? It’s like a duck’s!” He was surprised.
My mouth twitched and I wanted to laugh, but my heart was too bitter. I just watched Fourteenth quietly.
Fourteenth sighed bitterly, “Earlier, I had asked you to make your decision as soon as possible. But you didn’t listen. Now that you have reached this point you realize you regret it. Marrying Eighth is better than marrying the prince.”
There were tears in my eyes and Fourteenth stopped and said, “You take good care of your health and don’t worry about anything. I’m going back. I’m afraid I won’t be able to see you for the next few days. Take care of yourself.”
As soon as he left, Yutan came in with a bowl of rock sugar and autumn pears.
“You’re not on duty anymore?” I asked her.
“Li Shuda knows my sister is ill, so he asked me to take care of you.” She replied. She went to help me drink the sugar water.
“I don’t want to drink.” I said.
Yutan smiled and said, “Drink some, sister. This is the best for soothing your throat.”
I shook my head and motioned for her to take it away. She tried to persuade me a few more times but I didn’t respond. She then put it aside.
What exactly is this turning point? And Fourteenth had said it was only a turning point, which means it may not necessarily be the case, but at least there was a way to go for the time being. If it only takes a few days, it should be possible. Even if Kangxi wanted to grant me a marriage, he can’t be as anxious as to issue an order for me to take care of myself even though I’m sick. Thinking about this purpose, I calmed down a bit.
While I was thinking to myself, Yutan came in with the medicine. She placed it on the table and helped me sit up. I took her hand and motioned her to sit next to me.
“I can’t drink this medicine, Yutan.” She looked at me in surprise and I continued. “I don’t want to marry the prince. I have no other option but to pretend to be sick. But it’s impossible to pretend to be sick. I’ve been taking this medicine from you for so many years. Li Shuda knows everything together with the imperial doctor. So the medicine you bring is the usual and throw it away before anyone notices or you are not my good sister.”
Yutan bit her lip and stared at me before finally nodding. I smiled and took her hand but she suddenly turned her head and wiped her tears. Her shoulders shook and she muttered to herself.
“Why is this happening? Even people like my sister…”
Alas! What will her fate be in the future? By the time she leaves the palace she will have already passed the marriageable age, and given her background, she has no family to rely on. If she didn’t get married she could only live with her brothers for the rest of her life. How embarrassing would that be? If you get married it would be difficult to find a lover. For a woman as smart and clever as she is, as long as she is willing to work hard there is no way out. But I now see only a dark future. Women are made of water. That is because this society has no other way out for women except the ‘three obediences’ of ‘obeying the father, obeying the husband, and obeying the son.’ How can a woman not cry?
Although I didn’t take any of the medicine yesterday, I felt better today. I guess it’s because I often skipped rope in the hospital and did sit ups before going to bed. At that time, I only thought about health as the most important thing. I was alone in the palace. If I got sick, I would be the one to suffer.
Ancient medicine was backward. Looking at “Dream of Red Chamber” a small case of typhoid fever may turn into terminal tuberculosis at any time, so I have always been more in love with my body, but now I’m beginning to regret it.
Especially when the imperial doctor checked my pulse and said to me with a smile, “Just wait four or five more days and take some proper care and you should be fine.”
I was in so much pain that I had to pretend to be happy after hearing it.
Yutan brought the medicine and I was leaning against the couch in a daze when there was a knock on the door.
“Come in.” I called casually.
Xiao Shunzi walked through the door. He quickly approached the couch and faced me and whispered, “I was asked to tell this girl one word- Drag!” After saying this he turned and ran away in a hurry.
I thought about it for a long time and made up my mind.
In the evening I sent Yutan back to her own room to rest. I guessed that she would be fast asleep when I threw on my clothes and opened the door to stand in the courtyard. It was already cold in Beijing late at night at the end of September. I stood alone in the wind for a while, thinking about the last time when I had heard the bad news and was sad.
If you catch cold due to a chill wind and end up with a fever it’s probably due to psychological factors. I’m afraid I won’t be able to use the wind this time with such mental preparations. I turned back to the house and went to get a basin and cold water.
I held the basin and poured the water down, soaking myself from head to toe. I stood in the wind, forcing myself to raise my hands and close my eyes. I gritted my teeth and my body shivered.
“Good sister! Why are you doing this to yourself?” Yutan shouted as she rushed up to drag me back into my room.
I pushed her hand away and said, “Don’t worry about me. Go back to bed.”
She wanted to drag me, so I said, “Do you think I am willing to harm myself? But this is the only way I could think of to save myself now! If you continue stopping me, you are harming me. I will still treat you as a close friend.”
Yutan let go of my hand crying silently. I ignored her and took another basin of water. I stood in the wind for half the night. Before dawn I started feeling hot again and my head became dizzy. Yutan helped me into the house, dried my hair and changed my clothes. She covered me in a quilt.
“Don’t rush to call the doctor,” I kept telling her. “When my hair is dry, you can touch it and perm it some more. I’ll call again when the time comes.”
Because I was worried, I hadn’t rested well for many days. I was awake for a while before falling into a dazed sleep.
This illness was an aggravation of illness. There was no good way to reduce the fever in ancient times. It took me three or four days of being groggy before I woke up. And it took another four to five days to nurse myself back to health before I slowly began to recover. Thinking that this wasn’t good, Yutan no longer needed to take care of me all day long. And thinking about this so called turning point and Kangxi’s attitude I ordered Yutan to return to work as usual and to pay attention to everything. She nodded obediently to show she had understood everything.
Seeing that it was already ten days, but there was still no movement. Yutan only told me that Li Dequan had asked her about my condition and his expression was normal. He only told her to take good care of me. I was worried in my heart. This disease came on suddenly and violently and it happened coincidentally. What on earth could Kangxi be thinking? Fifteen days have passed since Fourteenth came to seem me, but I hadn’t seen any improvement. One day while I was sitting in the house, feeling miserable, Yutan hurried in. She closed the door and sat down next to me.
“I heard that today in court the old affairs of Lord Jingxi, the governor of the country were brought up again. I beg you to live forever. I’m investigating the case of the infantry commander Tuo Heqi and his son entertaining the ministers of the court and embezzling illegal money during the funeral of Prince Malhun of Doroan County.”
I thought about it carefully Jingxi is the son of prince An Yuele and the maternal uncle of eighth Fujin. He is in the Zhenglan banner with Eighth. He must be a supporter of Eighth. And the infantry commander Tuo Heqi is the prince’s man. This is an attack on the prince! Is this what is called a turnaround?
“But what do you think the live long lord said?”
Yutan replied, “Because this report said that there were signs that there were about twenty people participating in the party gathering, excluding infantry commander Tuo Heqi, the capital commander Eshan, the ministry of punishment minister Qi Shiwu, and the ministry of war minister Gang E. In addition to the adults most of them were military personnel such as the commander in chief of the eight banners and the deputy commander in chief. The live long lord took it very seriously and ordered Third to be responsible first for the investigation. If it is true as reported by the Duke of the town, the case will be handed over to the ministry of punishment for a detailed investigation.”
Of course a detailed review is required! Ever since the restoration of the crown prince, Kangxi has been worried that Yinreng might force the palace to usurp the throne. Most of the people participating in the symposium held military positions and held certain military powers. In particular, the position of infantry commander from the first rank. It’s like the commander of the capital’s garrison and is directly responsible for ensuring the emperor’s personal safety. How could Kangxi rest assured that they would be friendly in private? Once any unfavorable words to the prince were found, the prince would be deposed again soon. And since Eighth chose to attack this matter, he would definitely not target without aim.
Thinking about it, I couldn’t help a smile that escaped the corner of my mouth. The sword hanging above my head, finally, was temporarily removed. Since Kangxi’s suspicion about the prince became reality there is no reason to marry me to him. And if it is true as they think, I now have relations with two prominent Mongolian clans. How can they waste such a good resource on the prince?
I had always thought that the battle of the two deposed princes would have waited until next year. But I didn’t expect it to turn from the dark to being out in the open right now. I’m afraid that Eighth has already made arraignments and is just waiting for the opportunity, otherwise he wouldn’t be able to make such a decisive move. Since Fourth could send someone to delay for time, it means he also knows that there will be a day in court. It seems that this time he is going to cooperate with Eighth to take down the crown prince.
But what role did I play in this? I think I was the catalyst. Without me, this matter would have happened sooner or later, but because I was involved with the mongols and Kangxi’s attitude, to a certain extent, it might have happened earlier than they had planned.
Without a history book in hand I don’t know if these things are developing according to the history I know. I am confused in my heart. Is it because of me that history is like this? Or is it because of history that it is my business?
The smile was still there but it gradually became bitter. I hid here and there, but unexpectedly I landed in the center of the storm. I used to be a bystander, watching everyone go to their end. Now I am also dragged into those scene. Where should I go in the future? From now on, it is not a situation where nothing will happen if I don’t make a mistake. But I am afraid of making mistakes. Even if I move, the storm won’t let me go. I may not be so lucky next time. It’s time to think about how to protect myself!

Book 1 Chapter 18: Luodai Dances with the Fairy in the Moon
When I saw Kangxi the next day, I felt happy because I didn’t know what prince Suwan Guarjia and Kangxi had discussed. I always felt that it was not as simple an affair between children. Kangxi was focused on reviewing official documents and didn’t seem to pay much attention to me. I had to serve and read carefully.
Kangxi never spoke throughout the day. It was like whatever had happened yesterday, never happened. Not only did I feel uneasy, I became more afraid. I was afraid that the calmer everything was now, the more violent the storm would be in the future. I had no choice but to pretend everything was business as usual.
When I went to find Minmin in the evening, her eyes were red and swollen like walnuts. I shook my head and sighed.
“No wonder you have been hiding in the tent. It’s so hard to see anyone.”
“As you expected. Father agreed to ask the emperor to not propose a marriage for me and said he would choose a good one on the grassland. Father had mentioned however, Yi Ergenjueluo and Zuoying. He is very fond of them.” Minmin leaned against a soft pillow and said.
I nodded and smiled, looking at her. I said nothing.
“Father was full of praise for you, saying no wonder the emperor valued you so much.” She said suddenly with a smile on her lips.
I looked at Minmin in surprise. Minmin straightened up and said, “I told father I had figured it out and didn’t want to chase Thirteenth anymore. Father thought I was just coaxing him, to trick him into not marrying me off. I told father everything you told me.”
“Eighth and I…” I was shocked and asked quickly.
“Although I’m a brat, I’m not stupid. Apart from you and me, I won’t let anyone else know about this matter.” Minmin said.
I nodded in relief.
She continued, “While I was crying, I told father that I had figured it out. He didn’t like me even if he was here or in the city. It would be meaningless for me to marry him. I won’t marry him! After hearing this, father kept exclaiming I was so lucky to have a friend like you. And he said I didn’t need to pretend to wring my neck because he would let me marry Prince Zuoying.”
I smiled and looked at her. Because of her letting go, she indeed was a blessed person.
“Ruoxi, can I call you sister?” She suddenly asked.
“Only in private, not in front of others.” I agreed.
“Sister.” She called out. We both held each other’s hands and laughed. While her smile didn’t fade, her face did turn gloomy. I sighed and thought about it again. It was easier said than done when many people knew the truth, but when it came to actually doing it, how much can one do? It is rare for Minmin to do this.
She was silent for a while and then suddenly said, “Sister, I think even if I find a star, I won’t forget his singing and smile. And I don’t want him to just forget me. I want to dance for Thirteenth. I just think that every time he sees others dancing in the future, he will think of me. And remember that there was such a person to dance for him.”
I nodded in understanding and said softly, “I will definitely help you try and make Thirteenth never forget what he saw.”
Minmin nodded sadly and leaned into my arms.
During this period of time I was so busy I didn’t realize anything. When I opened my eyes again, it was already time for the banquet. When I got up every day my mind was focused on carefully thinking about what kind of dress, what color matched, how/when to set the stage, how to have the craftsman understand the effect I want. Where certain craftsmanship must be compromised.
After finishing my duties for the day I went to find Minmin’s brother Heshu. He was being pushed around by us. He kept asking in distress, “What on earth do you want to do?”
Minmin kept pouting. He kept a smile on his face and said, “Good.”
Prince Suwan Guarjia, on the other hand, responded to everything, and gave her whatever she wanted regardless of reason. He just smiled and let us do what we did. He also said what he said in front of Kangxi to make things easier on us.
One day when everyone was here, I was serving tea. Kangxi looked at me with a smile and said, “You’ve been busy all day and the craftsmen are doing a lot of construction under your guidance. Today they need to measure piece, tomorrow it’s make the grade work. The stall is so sentimental. It’s so big! If you don’t have any tricks to play later, let’s see where you will put your face. Don’t be tired of being laughed at. There is no one around you who can do it.”
“Then the live long lord can take care of this slave. As long as the live long lord says yes, who dares to laugh at this slave?” I leaned over into a bow and smiled.
“If it’s not good, I will be the first to scold you.” Kangxi smiled and scolded.
I bowed without saying anything. Prince Suwan Guarjia smiled and said, “If it’s not good, the first one to scold Minmin, will definitely be Minmin. It’s because Minmin loves to play nonsense.”
Kangxi looked at me with a smile and looked at Ergenjueluo Zuoying and asked, “It snowed last winter and many cattle and sheep froze to death. Are there any precautions this year?”
Prince Ergenjueluo Zuoying was busy responding carefully. While I was carrying the tea tray out, I was thinking. I had never thought a prince like Zuoying was such a man before meeting him. When he stood side by side with the handsome and unruly Thirteenth and bright and handsome Fourteenth, I didn’t even think about it. Not inferior at all! His appearance cannot said to be outstanding but the boldness and shrewdness in his brows and calm and generous manner make people think of an eagle soaring in the nine heavens. Prince Suwan Guarjia has excellent vision, but I don’t know if he is destined to be with Minmin.
I have been busy all day and unknowingly it’s been two months. The mongols are leave tomorrow. Tonight Kangxi hosted a banquet to see them off. With Kangxi in the center, Prince Suwan Gaurjia to the side and the other brothers and princes and accompanying ministers scattered throughout. Kangxi looked around carefully and asked me with a smile, “You’ve been busy for more than two months. How come you are so clandestine that you can’t see anything clearly?”
I leaned over and smiled and said, “The lamps haven’t been lit yet. It will be clear once they are lit. If the live long lord wants to see it, I will order them to start.”
Kangxi looked at Prince Suwan Guarjia and Prince Zuoying with a smile. They both bowed and smiled and said, “As long as the emperor wishes!”
Kangxi nodded to me. I glanced at Li Dequan who nodded to me. Because all the lights and fires will be extinguished for a while, we informed Kangxi in advance and Li Dequan especially had added more guards. At this time he had four guards close by. The prince and the other brothers had looked at each other when they came to the tables, but when they saw Kangxi talking and laughing as usual they calmed down. I picked up a copper bell that I had prepared in advance and turned towards Kangxi.
“This slave will turn off the lights, your majesty.”
Kangxi nodded and I rang the bell. In an instant all lights went out and the entire camp went dark. The elder brothers and the officials did not expect that it would be completely dark in an instant and they couldn’t help but let out sounds of surprise. I smiled in my heart. This was the effect I wanted, so my long training efforts were not in vein.
After everyone had gotten used to the darkness I calmly shook the bell again. With two crisp sounds, a faint blue light slowly lit up in front of me. Undulating like blue waves that reminded me of a moonlit sea. The faint sounds of the morin fiddle was entwined like threads in the blurred blue. When I heard it, I couldn’t help but feel in a trance. A bright moon slowly rose from the sea. A crescent moon, half moon, full moon. Everyone in the audience looked up at the hanging full moon in the sky. A faint sound of surprise could be heard.
The sound of a matouqin gradually became clearer as if with the rising of the moon the man playing the fiddle also approached everyone from the vast night. With the sound of several drums a woman’s slender figure appeared. She walked gracefully, swaying with fragrance. Her gold and silver steps swayed slightly. Her wide sleeves and long belt dancing lightly. Finally slowed down and framed the flying posture of a pipa bouncing in the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes as if about to take flight but hesitates.
Across the moon, her figure is just a black silhouette which already makes people feel graceful and graceful. Like a swimming dragon which makes people yearn for it. But she is so celestial, solitary and cold which makes people feel ashamed.
When the sounds of the Qin and drums stopped the whole audience could hear a needle drop. Everyone looked up at the fairy in the moon wondering if she was coming or returning. In the extreme silence, the sound of the pipa and silk crackling suddenly made everyone’s heart startle.
Before the shock was over, the fairy had already spread her sleeves and ribbons fluttered. Her figure may have been as soft as a swaying willow in the wind or a scorching as a lotus with green waves. As bright as moon glow or as slow as clear spring. As if covered in light clouds, the moon is fluttering like snow in the flowing wind. If the movement is impermanent, it will be safe if you are in danger. If you are going to stop in a difficult period, if you are moving forward you will return.
All viewers are impressed by the dance in the middle of the moon. The pipa gradually slows down and the sound becomes lower almost inaudible. The moon slowly sets, the light gradually dims and the dancing figure of the fairy slowly becomes misty. Finally the fairy in the moon disappears into the darkness with the moon. Leaving only blue waves flowing silently on stage, confused and melancholy just like everyone’s mood at this time.
I looked around and saw the crown prince in front of me with a look of color on his face. Ninth’s eyes were wide open, mouth slightly agape. Although Ergenjueluo’s expression was normal, he leaned forward slightly, as if he too wanted to catch the moon that gradually faded away. I couldn’t help but smile slightly when I saw Thirteenth’s expression of admiration. From now on, when you see the moon I’m afraid you will always have this reaction.
I picked up the bell and rang it three times. The lights on the stage dimmed and the whole world was immersed in the dark again. Only when everyone came to their senses and varying sighs came from the darkness, Kangxi suddenly praised, “What a wonderful moment of dance!”
The people in the audience echoed loudly. I bowed to Kangxi and secretly whispered, “Minmin gege wanted to sing another song.”
“The music is still in place after the dance. Could it be any better?” He sighed.
“I don’t dare to say it’s better. I can only hope it makes the live long lord smile.” I smiled and said. I heard two bells ring from the other side of the stage as I was speaking. “Your majesty, can we start now?”
“Start!” Kangxi said.
I picked up the copper bell and rang it twice. As soon as the bell fell, a dense drum beat sounded. With the sound of the drums, hundreds of lighted lanterns slowly rose. The lantern in the center was the size of a mill stone and becomes smaller as it went higher. The other lanterns were no more than the size of a fist. When the lanterns rose high into the sky, the curtain covering the stage fell quickly with a heavy drumbeat.
What came into view were red blooming plum blossoms. There was a faint breeze blowing and the branches moved with the wind. There were pieces of petals swirling and falling slowly with the breeze and a faint fragrance floating in the quiet night. Knowing that in this season the flowers really couldn’t be plum blossoms, but everyone couldn’t help but smell them.
“It’s really plum blossoms!” Someone whispered.
The sound of a flute gradually rose and the sound got higher and thinner, until it reached the sky. Then it suddenly fell back and became inaudible. Everyone suddenly felt emptiness in their hearts. They were disappointed when suddenly they saw deep in the plum forest a well-dressed beauty wearing a red cloak with white rabbit fur, carrying a green silk umbrella.
She was light and graceful. The flute sounded again, and she sang as she walked.
True love is like a vast grassland, which cannot be blocked by wind and rain, when the clouds rise and the sun rises, all the sun’s rays illuminate you and me. True love is like the plum blossoms that have bloomed, and the ice and snow cannot drown them. They bloom on the coldest branches. See you in spring. My snowflakes are fluttering in the north wind. The world is vast. A poor plum blossom stands proudly in the snow. It is only for the fragrance of my beloved. I love what I love without regrets. This love will last forever.
A trace of sorrow is hidden deep inside. It is sad but not sad and the ambition is noble; just like the red plum that has withered after the wind and snow, but still stands on the branch.
Along with the singing, the hanging lanterns were extinguished in circles. The lights on the stage slowly dimmed and snow began to fall from the sky. White snowflakes fell one after another and danced in the air. Minmin stands proudly amidst the red plum blossoms in full bloom. Pure white snow and bright red plums form a glazed world. And Minmin is the most beautiful scenery of all.
Minmin’s singing gradually becomes low and the other lanterns are extinguished, leaving only the middle lantern shining on Minmin and the blossoms. She threw away her umbrella and partially lifted her head and stared at the snowflakes floating in the air. Under the light, her face became crystal clear as jade with a smile on her lips and with a confused and desolate expression as she slowly reached out to pick up the snow.
In an instant, the lights went out and the sound disappeared. In the darkness all I could see was her sad and happy figure catching snow like a child. The sensitive and emotional expression hit my heart hard and a snowfall many years ago came to mind. I was also wearing a big red feather crepe cloak, walking in confusion like a child who couldn’t find home. In the snow he came and took my hand. My thoughts went back and forth and stayed a while.
“Ruoxi!” Li Dequan shouted loudly. I screamed and he scolded me. “What are you thinking about? The emperor has shouted several times.”
“Don’t talk about her. I was stunned after hearing this for a while.” Kangxi said with a smile.
“Please light the lamps now, servant.” I quickly said. I shook the bell in my hand and the lamps and bonfire were re-lit.
Minmin changed her clothes and returned saluting. She only wore a moon white dress this time, different from the brightly colored clothes of the past. But it didn’t detract from her beauty. It actually made her realize that the flowers were even more beautiful and she even more so.
Kangxi sighed and looked at Prince Suwan Guarjia. “I haven’t watched a performance with such concentration in many years.”
“The emperor is given you such praise!” Prince Suwan Guarjia said looking at his daughter with pride. Minmin with a calm expression and elegant posture, stood next to Prince Suwan Guarjia quietly.
I glanced at Thirteenth and sighed in my heart. In just over two months, she was no longer the little girl who behaved as she pleased. She is now a little woman who experienced heartache. Maybe she has become more charming, but the simple happiness has also been far away from her. Do gems always have to go through a painful tempering process before they become radiant?
Prince Zuoying took a closer look at Minmin and lowered his eyes in thought. I thought with a smile, ‘the eagle’s heart may be lost to Minmin tonight, but will he be able to capture her heart in the future?’
“Come, tell me how you made those moons and snow?” Kangxi asked Minmin with a smile.
Minmin glanced at me and smiled back, “At first the blue lights and undulating water waves were made with blue gauze that covers the ground with a blue lantern underneath. The light shines through the blue gauze. In the dark it looks faint blue. Then we ordered someone to fan lightly from under it and it naturally felt like floating waves. The same goes for the moon. Make a circle of bamboo strips, stretch it with light yellow gauze and attach small lanterns around it. The lantern covers are woven with silver threads and only the side facing the moon is covered with transparent gauze so that the light does not leak out. It’s all covered in yellow gauze and looks like the full moon at night. The rise and fall were fixed with ropes. There were people behind me to control it. I was actually dancing on a platform behind us and the people below would see through it. Looking at it, would seem like I’m dancing in the moon. The brightness of the moon had been tested and determined in advance. The red plums were made of real trees and decorated with high quality flowers that were seen in the light. The fragrance of the plum blossoms came from the best plum blossom dew which was heated over a small fire and fanned to waft through the area. The snowflakes were cut from thin almost transparent silk and mixed with fine cotton pieces, then a palace lady would fan hard with a big fan. The lights were dimmed to make the snow flakes look more real.”
Kangxi looked startled as Minmin finished the explanation and then glanced at me. “It been hard for you and Ruoxi.”
Minmin smile and said nothing. I quickly bowed and said, “Actually, the materials were all complete and of high quality. We practiced more to ensure the cooperation between everyone involved. To put it bluntly, it was really simple. The scenes are just throwing away money. In the end it was good. The key was Minmin gege.”
“Don’t be too busy being modest. You had to spend money on ideas. If I had know you had this ability you would have been in charge of the singing and dancing during palace banquets.” Kangxi said with a smile.
I quickly apologized and said with a smile, “This servant only has so much ability. She is just Cheng Yaojin’s three headed axe. I’m already at my wits end, live long lord. Please don’t embarrass me any more. Otherwise, I’m afraid that the next time after watching a performance the live long lord will blame me. Why did I replace the moon with the sun and Chang’E turned into a crow?” The brothers and ministers below him laughed as I finished speaking. Kangxi laughed and scolded, “Look how obedient you are! It’s obvious that you are lazy. You have a lot of things to say!”
I lowered my head and smiled, “This slave dares not.”
Kangxi smiled and praised Minmin a few more times and rewarded her with a jade ruyi. After prince Suwan Guarjia watched Minmin kowtow to receive her reward he smiled at Kangxi and said, “I want to reward Ruoxi with something.”
“This girl knows how to ask for rewards from me. I don’t even know how many good things she has taken away in these years. What’s better? I’ll save it this time.” Kangxi said with a smile.
Prince Suwan Guarjia smiled and took out a jade pendant from his arms and handed it to a waiting eunuch. The eunuch held it in both hands and handed it to me. I knelt down and thanked him. Prince Suwan Guarjia glanced at Minmin and said, “Minmin also has a piece of this same jade pendant. Minmin originally had a twin sister, after they were born, I couldn’t help but be overjoyed and happened to have this beautiful jade. I had it especially ordered to be carved into two pendants. But we did not expect that her sister would die before the pendants were finished.” Suwan Guarjia sighed softly.
No one had expected that this pendant had such a history. Everyone was shocked and looked at me intently. I kowtowed, holding the pendant in my hand and said, “This jade pendant expresses the prince’s love for his daughter, I really don’t dare to accept.”
“Since this king has given it to you there is nothing you dare to do.” He said with a smile to me. He looked at Kangxi who smiled at me. “Take it.”
I kowtowed again and put the pendant away. The scene was silent and the brothers watched me thoughtfully. I really couldn’t figure out what this jade pendant represented. What did Prince Suwan Guarjia mean to convey to Kangxi by doing this? Or did they already have a tacit understanding? Looking at Minmin in confusion, she just smiled sweetly at me. I smiled, my face full of joy. I temporarily put aside my doubts and smiled sweetly at her. I felt warm in my heart.
The night was growing late. Kangxi was old and should not be out so late after all. After giving the prince a few instructions, Li Dequan accompanied him and left first. Prince Suwan Guarjia also left with them. As soon as they left the atmosphere at the tables became more cheerful. Prince Zuoying and Thirteenth were in great conversation. When they were bold, they beat their chopsticks and sing songs- sometimes in Mongolian, sometimes in Chinese. And when they were in a mood, they would drink a bowl of wine by raising their necks.
Prince Heshu faced off against Ninth and Fourteenth. The three of them made fists, drank wine, talked, laughed, and feasted.
Fourth watched Thirteenth and Prince Zuoying with a smile and occasionally raised a bowel with them. Eight instead laughed quietly with the prince. The other accompanying ministers and Mongolian ministers were also drinking and laughing separately. I huddled in the darkness and watched the scene in front of me. Although I knew it was wishful thinking, I still couldn’t help but hope that this moment would stay, with only laughter and no fighting.
“Sister? What are you thinking about?” Minmin stood beside me at some point. I looked at them in the brightly lit place and murmured, “It turns out that the colorful flowers are blooming everywhere, but they are all in ruins like this. The beautiful scenery, the pleasure in the courtyard. The good times in the sky.”
“What do you mean?” Minmin asked in a low voice.
“I just lament that you will be leaving tomorrow. The happy time together is too short.” I whispered.
Minmin sighed softly. “I wonder if I can see you next year.”
The two of us had our own sadness and we fell silent. I gathered myself together and said to Minmin, “Let’s go back and sit down. I have a farewell gift for you.”
“What?” Minmin asked.
I pushed her, motioning for her to return. “I promised you last year.”
After hearing this she became excited. Turning around with a soft sigh, she quickly walked away. I found someone to locate a flute and held it lightly in my hands. I waved to Sancai, a servant to Thirteenth. He came over in a hurry and bowed in greeting.
“Go and ask master Thirteenth to come over” I said with a laugh.
After listening, Sancai quickly returned to Thirteenth and bent to whisper to him. Thirteenth turned and said a few word back to Zuoying. He saluted the crown prince and strode over.
He smelt of wine. “What you did today was both very beautiful and cruel. I will settle the score with you when I get back.” He smiled.
“Minmin is leaving tomorrow, please play her a piece of music. We don’t know when we will see each other again. So let’s call it a farewell.” I smiled and said.
Thirteenth nodded and took the flute. “What are you playing? Does she have a particular preference?”
“Just play the song she sang this night.” I said after thinking a while.
“I didn’t memorize the score deliberately because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to play it.” Thirteenth said after a long pause looking at the flute.
I smiled and hummed in a low voice. Finishing slowly, I asked, “Have you remembered everything?”
Thirteenth nodded. He walked back and greeted the prince with a smile and said. “My dear brother, I would like to play a piece of music to cheer you up.”
“Why not? We all know you are good at playing the flute, but you are never willing to be easygoing. It’s rare for you to take the initiative today. So we call all enjoy it.” The prince said with a smile. Everyone present cheered.
Thirteenth stood with a smile and put his lips to the flute. He faced Minmin and nodded slightly and the melodious sound of the flute came out. When Minmin heard the music she stared at Thirteenth, shaken. Thirteenth was indeed the master of music. I have only to listen twice but the noble and unyielding plum blossom and deep love of a sweetheart were all reflected in the flute music.
Everyone present looked surprised. Only Fourth, Eighth, and Fourteenth looked normal. This was the song that Minmin had just sung tonight after all. At this time, Thirteenth added a bit of flavor as he played. Before the song was finished, Minmin had tears in her eyes watching Thirteenth in infatuation. Prince Zuoying looked at Thirteenth and Minmin quietly. His face was soft but his eyes were firm as iron. Pity and distress played across his face. When I looked at Zuoying, the corners of my mouth couldn’t help but curve up slightly. I was not jelous. I was not looking down upon him. I was just feeling sorry for him, this strange man.
When the last note faded away, Thirteenth bowed to Minmin and started playing from the beginning again. Minmin stood up and followed the note.
And sang:
Snowflakes are fluttering in the north wind, the sky and the earth are vast, a cold plum stands proudly in the snow, just for the fragrance of my beloved, love what I love without regrets, this love lasts forever
Amidst the singing I walked out without knowing the direction, so I randomly picked a place with few people. The singing gradually became lower and further away, and finally could not be heard. A sudden thought came to my mind.
‘The sound gradually fades away, and the passionate people are always annoyed by the ruthless people.’
If a person is ruthless, perhaps he can truly stay away from troubles!
Climbing up the hillside, I climb to the top in one breath. I look at the camp not far away, with the bonfires and the faint silhouettes of patrolling soldiers. I half raise my head to look at the crooked moon in the sky, and couldn’t help but sigh. Yes, it’s always deserted after a happy gathering.
Suddenly I heard the sound of dense rustling grass. I turned my head and saw Fourth slowly approaching. I quickly bowed in greeting and he raised his hand to let me get up.
We both stood in silence. I didn’t like this feeling of silence. It always made people feel oppressed. After thinking about it a moment, I asked, “Is the prince familiar with Prince Zuoying?”
Fourth said, “Since you have met Prince Zuoying, you should have a rough idea. He is an outstanding talent, but he is the son of a concubine. His mother has low status so he is not valued by Prince Ergenjueluo. Last winter, many people and animals in the Ergenjueluo tribe froze to death and then there was the conflict with the Borzijit in the spring over pastures. Coming to see royal father at this time was not a flattering job. So it fell to him, but…,” he paused, “it was a blessing in disguise. I’m afraid it will cause a headache for Prince Ergenjueluo and the eldest prince in the future.”
I heard something vaguely clear, and I didn’t know where the blessing would come from. I had a vague feeling that it should be related to who would inherit the throne in the future. Thinking of Minmin I sighed. There is really a power struggle everywhere, but I didn’t know what Kangxi and Prince Suwan Guarjia think. Then I considered that Minmin may not even like Prince Zuoying yet. Why should I think so much about it now?
While I was thinking wildly, Fourth said, “You’re making wedding clothes for others! Do you really want to live alone for the rest of your life? Don’t talk to me about filial piety. It’s not like your head was eaten by ‘the legend of the martyr woman’.”
I was silent for a while. I don’t know why, maybe because the scenes from the night were still in my mind, here emotion is greater than reason. Maybe he thinks that a person who knows how to sail a boat to enjoy the lotus should understand, so I can’t help but say what is in my heart:
“I’m so tired! I’ve been in the palace for these years and every step followed by the rules. There is scheming everywhere and I have to think about everything again and again. But I’m not such a person at all. I just want to leave, to go far away. To laugh loudly when I laugh, cry loudly when I want to cry. I can be a shrew when I am angry and I can act like a lady when I am gentle. Now it seems getting married is just trading cages from the big one of the Forbidden City to a smaller prison. In a smaller cage, I may not be as beautiful as I was in the Forbidden City. Why should I get married? I have seen too many battles in the palace all these years. I’m afraid the prince knows a little bit about the harem, but they are even darker. It’s all you men who don’t know. Fourth, I’m not lying to you. Thinking about the fighting between wives and concubines after marriage, I really think it’s better to cut my hair and become a nun.” [translated as sister in law]
Fourth was silent for a while and then said calmly, “Your status makes it impossible for you to decide these things by yourself. The more royal father values you, the more your marriage will be outside your control. Take tonight’s jade pendants. Prince Suwan Guarjia’s words revealed how he regards you as a woman, Minmin and Heshu also treat you better than the Prince [assuming crown prince]. Although I can’t figure out what Prince Suwan Guarjia’s final plan is, if Royal father wants to propose a marriage for you. I’m afraid he has weighed both sides and considered it carefully. If you expect to be released from the palace when you reach the age of the other palace maids, I advise you to give up on that idea as soon as possible. Instead, think carefully how to ask royal father to recommend a marriage that will satisfy you, relatively speaking. It’s more practical.”
My heart just dropped as I listened in a daze. My last bit of hope was cruelly shattered by his few words! It turned out, no matter how hard I struggled, I would inevitably become a pawn in the end. I couldn’t help but smile bitterly.
“If I don’t want to get married, no one can force me!” I said anger and sadness welling up.
“Then you should prepare three feet of white silk!” Fourth watched me calmly. “You must be ruthless to not care that your death would affect your entire family and anger royal father.” He added.
I wondered blankly. Would one day I really have to risk my life for refusing marriage? Although I had used this once before to help Eighth, it was just a tactic and attitude. Growing up, I had never thought about committing suicide, and I had always looked down on those who had. Did my parents give birth to me and raise me so hard for me to just take my own life? I always felt that everything depended on man-made efforts and that there was always room to maneuver in everything. What is more precious than life, after all? Not only for yourself, but for your parents and those who love you. Only by living can you have hope.
“The palace is the last place where dreams are allowed. Wake up early and think about how to deal with it. Otherwise when things happen, you really will have no control over yourself.” He said slowly.
I asked unwillingly, “Is it really not allowed? My not getting married? If I don’t want to get married I won’t hinder anyone. So why do you want me to have to marry?”
“You don’t understand what I say? Or you just don’t want to understand at all? The only person who can decide this matter is royal father. And you can only obey.” He said coldly.
I don’t want to understand at all. Have I been coaxing myself to go forward? Otherwise how did I survive this day?
After a long time, Fourth asked calmly, “Is there no one in your heart you would willingly marry? Is there no one who makes you feel like being around him is no prison?”
I was stunned and took a while to shake my head. He stared at me a long while before turning his head to stare into the depths of the night and said no more. The two of us walked back in silence, slowly. When we took leave, I said sincerely, “Thank you, Fourth.”
He waved his hand casually to let me get up. He turned and left.

I told you, you can’t come here! And you didn’t listen to me! Now the Crown Prince thinks you’re a thief. How could we explain this? If we explain, people will know about us. You know palace maids can’t freely meet men. You and I will both die. But if we don’t explain, you’ll die anyway. Then…how could I go on living alone?
That time when Fourteenth gets way too into playing Ruoxi’s secret lover.

top 5 kdrama male leads
this question is so hard because i have so many favorites 😭
1. Minhyuk (Strong Woman Do Bong Soon)
minmin has been my #1 fav male lead for years. swdbs was my first kdrama and he REALLY set the standard for me 😩 he’s so overdramatic and chaotic. we love a king who canonically gets weak in the knees whenever his gf beats people up and smiles
2. Seongyeom (Run On)
my B E L O V E D!! i was whipped for him before the first episode even ended. he’s so awkward but confident?? i’m a sucker for soft and quirky male leads. seongyeom is unintentionally hilarious and so sweet it hurts. plus? he’s not afraid to show emotion or cry or call people out on their BS. i love him 😭
3. Moohak (Dali & the Cocky Prince)
cold/stoic male leads are clearly not my type, i like the overdramatic weird/awkward ones who looks at their badass capable gf like “🥰🥹” moohak is a recent favorite. i finished dali & the cocky prince not that long ago but immediately knew he was a new favorite. he’s so wjcjjsjdjd
4. Junho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo)
if you follow or know me well enough than this should NOT come as a surprise. i just love him 🥹 i can’t even put into words how much i adore him.
5. Yihyun (Happiness)
yes park hyungshik is on this list two times. idk why but i go absolutely feral over his characters. yihyun?? he literally pines for seobom for years and, somehow, gets a chance to fake marry her so that she can get an apartment...only for a zombie outbreak to happen. he’s the definition of ‘if you hurt my (fake) wife i’ll burn the world to the ground’ (and ofc seobom is the definition of ‘if you hurt my (fake) husband i will burn the world to the ground’). the good thing about this being a zombie outbreak is that everything heightened and we get so many moments of the two fighting side by side and going ‘who hurt you.’ plus he’s just so soft and tender and sweet but isn’t afraid to be the ‘bad cop’ (iykyk 😭)
Honorable Mentions: Seon Gong Myung (Into the Ring), Ryan Gold (Her Private Life), Youngshik (When the Camellia Blooms), Captain Ri Junghyuk (Crash Landing on You), Hwang Hee Tae (Youth of May), Choi Jun Woo (Moment at Eighteen), Yoo So Joon (Tomorrow with You), Enrique Geum (Flower Boy Next Door), Baek Hae Sung (Flower of Evil), and Choi Han Gyul (Coffee Prince)
Ask me my TOP FIVE anything
#kay answers#kdrama recommendations#strong woman do bong soon#jtbc run on#dali and the cocky prince#extraordinary attorney woo#tvn happiness#everyone i FINALLY switched up my top five#not by much because it’s always been minhyuk/seongyeom cxjwkk
