Random QL Superlatives: 2024 Edition
This list is gonna contain qls (and a few kdramas) I’ve watched this year, rather than the qls that were released this year.
Best Hosaka: Namgoong Shiwoon, Light On Me
ICYMI, I am obsessed with Hosaka from I Cannot Reach You, for his complete disdain for miscommunication, his incredible radar for bullshittery, and his otherworldly ability to not-so-gentle-parent bl boys into talking to each other. Every BL should have a Hoska. A Hosaka is a crucial part of a healthy BL ecosystem imo. So this year’s Best Hosaka Award goes to.. Namgoong Shiwoon!
Tumblr media
Namgoong is kind yet firm in his opinions (and boyyy does he have them in a bushel and a peck), goofy in physicality yet measured with his words, and an all-around stellar friend. He would figure out the exact ways you’re ruining your life before you’ve even had a chance to emerge from the mental rubble, and will meet you with a detailed presentation on how to fix everything. Get a Namgoong for your life and listen to them for the best results!
Favorite Signature Move, Kiyoi tackling Hira, Utsukushii Kare 2 and Utsukushii Kare: Eternal
Kiyoi losing his patience with Hira and tackling him to the ground so he can get in his face and scream to get information out of him was simultaneously hilarious and sad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most Ineffective Defense: Sangwoo and His Lil Desk Divider, Semantic Error
Tumblr media
I am still laughing at how Sangwoo believed with his entire precious heart that putting up a foot tall, easily removable physical barrier is gonna deter my man Jaeyoung, menace extraordinaire and dedicated Sangwoo-annoyer. Boy, did you even wanna try?
Saddest Sex Scene: At 25:00, In Akasaka
I was already heartbroken when Hayama and Shirasaki tried, failed, and emotionally devastated each other by attempting to “rehearse” for their intimate scene the previous night, but the filming of the actual scene took the pieces of my shattered heart, stomped on it, and then set it on fire. The aborted pinkie touch should be made illegal due to the amount of pain it inflicts on the masses.
Tumblr media
Favorite Wholly Unrealistic Teenage Boy, Hasegawa, Oppan
I love this boy with all my heart and soul. What a mature little teenage noodle. The writers must’ve conceived his character by pouring all the good stuff they want to see in a baseball-jock teenage boy into a beaker, and out he emerged, Powerpuff Girls style.
Tumblr media
Best Use of Strong-Independent-Women Money: Lee Mi Na’s Collection, Hit The Spot
I adore this woman for many things. Her friendship with Hee Jae. Her standards for men.
Tumblr media
But most of all, I adore her for the things she spends her money on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What an icon.
Best Righteous Anger: Ryunosuke, Tokyo In April Is…
I am always a big fan of characters who are mad for the right reasons and are not afraid to show it. Ryunosuke watched his friend carry this unbearable guilt around for years, and was rightfully mad at Kazuma who he assumed knew what had happened to Ren. And when he realized that Kazuma did not know, Ryunosuke sets his anger aside and tells Kazuma. I am part of the Ren Protection Squad and Ryunosuke is our leader.
Tumblr media
The Cameo That Inspired The Loudest Scream: Madea Kentaro in Utsukushii Kare: Eternal
My earnest, precious son Yamato from I Cannot Reach You showing up in the middle of Hira and Kiyoi’s patented messiness? The scream I scrumpt, y’all.
Tumblr media
Bestest Best Friend: Joon Pyo, The Eighth Sense
Joon Pyo! He got the fuck out of his own room for the night so his childhood best friend can get some. Ji Hyun better protect and cherish him at all costs.
Tumblr media
Most Precious Gift To The World: Fujita-san and Kasuga’s conversation, Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna Season 2
Tumblr media
Asian daughters fighting the intergenerational trauma demon everyday just.. get to have this? To watch whenever we want and draw strength from it? And feel the shoulders of the other daughters (and mothers) also fighting their fight, standing right beside us, fighting, and living, and thriving? What a blessing.
Wisest Wisdom: Pie’s Post-Breakup Advice, The Trainee
Tumblr media
Heartbreak is temporary. French Fries are eternal.
The Swooniest Gwenchana: Ji Hyun, Happiness
Tumblr media
Did I make up a whole category just because I needed to put his face on this post? Yes.
This year has been, amongst many things, undeniably fun. Tag me in your superlatives lists, and I will see y’all in the next one!
Tagging the peeps: @lurkingshan, @bengiyo, @happypotato48, @wen-kexing-apologist, @starryalpacasstuff

Okay, but the concept of having zombies but they revert to humans, that is brilliant. Because usually in a zombie scenario, a infected person gets to make one moral decision: what to do when they get bitten. And the other people don't have terribly hard decisions to make, shoot the future zombie.
But in Happiness, you have someone who becomes a zombie but then goes back to being human and has to deal with what they've done. You have uninfected people who have to decide if they will kill or banish the person standing in front of them, who looks completely human (right now). And hope is far more realistic, the infected aren't rotting and grotesque, even in the zombie phase, and then they return to their normal selves.
The main characters are staunchly "save the infected humans if we can do it safely" but the other residents all have such varied feelings, which of course change when someone close to them becomes infected. It's fascinating and very well written how they all react and deal with the question of what to do with the infected and when infected.

thinking about happiness and about how much of that show is about love. and how a majority of the characters are moved and fueled by it.
yihyun loves his wife enough to protect her home even through what could be his dying breath. seungyoung thinks about his wife day and night. he's infected and on death's door, but all he can think about is her; what will his family do without him? taeseok is looking for a cure desperately—even if it means using an apartment complex as a petri dish—no means are too harsh if he can save the many at the cost of the few. but deep down, he just wants to see his wife awake. he wants to see her smile. jungkook wants to see his wife's smile too. he's stuck here, away from his family, amongst mostly strangers. he knows he's shirking away from his duty, but he can't help it; he's a husband before he's a cop. he just wants to go home—what kind of man would he be if he left his wife all alone? and hakje—he knows he doesn't treat his wife the best, not many men of his generation do—but that doesn't mean he doesn't love her. he's lived with her for decades now, what life will he have without her? better to die together, infected or not.
saebom loves little seoyoon. she hasn't been taking care of her for long, but how could you not love such a sweet little child? she's a little sliver of the future: sickly but strong, and the least she can do is get her safely to her mother. neighbors need to look out for each other.
soomin loves his sister, even though he hates to admit it. they fight too much nowadays, about money and rent and family. it's easy to get mad at her when they end up quarantined together. but it's easy to live, too, thinking about her. a thought cuts through the bloodlust; if he survives this—no, he will survive it— he'll find the time to finally be a better brother.

Hee joo's devotion and willingness to do anything for sa eon is giving me life she's one in a million and yes sa eon is as devoted as a human can be but that's almost every male lead ever but a female lead like her is practically extinct especially one that matches her otps romantic gestures and sacrifices to an exact degree (her getting down and proposing while remaking the contract? Iconic) do you have any suggestions for other dramas with women like her? The only one I can think of from this year is Dou zhao from blossom who floored me with how she used every tool at her disposal to cherish her husband in a way you only see MLs do.
I'm also totally in love with Hong Hee-joo from When the Phone Rings and Dou Zhao from Blossom! There are some other similar female leads. Spoilers ahead:
Han Ri-ta in Moon in the Day murders her husband's father, expecting to die for it, so she can free him. (And it's even more wild because her husband killed her entire family; best enemies to lovers ever.) In the present, her reincarnation decides to off herself to end a curse/save the people around her. She's also a competent firefighter.
Naksu/Cho Yeong/Mu-deok from Alchemy of Souls. She pursues goals to a suicidal level to help Jang Uk/herself gain her powers. She also gives up her power for love. I will never get over her insane plan to poison Jang Uk and get herself tortured in Ep 3, very unhinged.
Oh Han-byul from Sh**ting Stars. She is more like Dou Zhao from Blossom, very competent at her job and very protective of the male lead (despite finding him very annoying at first). She also does the male lead thing of helping him in secret: phones for help when she sees him being mobbed by fans, gets him his favourite foods but doesn't say it's from her, etc.
Despite starting off as a silly fangirl, Orchid from Love Between Fairy and Devil matures a lot and becomes an equal to her over-powered fiance. She proposes to him too! She drugs him in an attempt to save him, endures a torture cave so they can marry, and sacrifices herself to stop a war.
I'm on Ep 28/68, but A'wu from The Rebel Princess is pretty great. She starts as a idealistic teenager but grows up very fast. She has a great ride or die vibe with her husband, which includes her threatening suicide rather than being used as a captive to sway her husband's decisions.
This is getting long, so I'll add W: Two Worlds, Flower of Evil, Happiness, and Doom at Your Service as fitting this theme. The female lead in Happiness breaking out of a military base to save her infected husband and then telling him she loves him even at his worst? *chef's kiss*
(I think I'm just listing all my favourite dramas.... I have a type)
