Chris-his role is the “protective” parent of his kids and his friends aswell but his relationship with his brother(Perry aka Bartholomew) is pretty hard considering how him perry and Martin stopped having contact since michael and sunsets death in 2009 but he still had contact with his other brother Martin, and him and twilight have a cute and healthy relationship but him and ferb have a father and son realationship

Review Time: “Children of Blood and Bone”

Highly coveted and extremely popular, Tomi Adeyemi’s 2018 debut young adult novel Children of Blood and Bone received hundreds of reviews, praise, critique, and wonder. The novel was rated a 4.3/5 stars on Good Reads, and 4.9/5 stars on Barnes & Nobles--it did so well that Adeyemi has already teased a second novel release in what is supposedly a trilogy.

It’s not hard to image why Children of Blood and Bone is so popular. In a time when audiences are searching with fever for diverse characters and unique story arcs, Adeyemi has given us a diamond in the rough. Children of Blood and Bone takes place in a fictionalized, re-imagined version of Nigeria, where the Orisha (traditional deity’s of the Yoruba people) act as the book’s magic system. The novel follows main character Zelie, as she fights to save magic (and defeat an evil monarchy) by going on a quest with her brother Tzain, a giant snow-leopard, and a run-away princess named Amari. As Zelie and her group of delinquents race against time, they are mercilessly pursued by Amari’s older brother, the angry crown prince named Inan who just wants to prove himself to his father.

Sound familiar? Yeah. One of my main problems with this novel is that it reminded me a little too much of the Nickelodeon animated hit, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Giant ancient animal the characters get to ride on? Check. “Chosen one” who doesn’t know what’s going on? Check. Doting older sibling who’s lowkey comic relief? Check. Strange monks who live in hidden mountains? Check. Evil fascist genocide-crazy king? Check. Emo prince who just wants to be told he’s special? Check. You get the idea. Adeyemi watched one season of A:TLA and decided to make it Black.

That being said----duhhhh, I’m going to read the second book. I’m invested now! Adeyemi’s world is huge and enthralling, and she leaves a lot to be desired in the future books. The magic system is solid; I enjoyed learning about each character’s individual gift and the stories behind the Orisha. Adeyemi’s action sequences are quick, written with an sort of expertise and precision that allows you to see every action unfold as she tells it. These are the moments that really elevated the book for me--I found myself enthralled, my nose deep in the pages, not able to look away.

In other places, the novel fell flat. I’m not a fan of unnecessary heterosexual romances in young adult novels (it’s like, not 2011 anymore, not every YA novel needs a romance to flourish) and Adeyemi gave me just that (not one, but TWO. ugh). I won’t spoil anything, but I just want to say I was yawnin’. As I mentioned before, the action sequences kept me interested, the romance almost made me want to throw the book across the room.

And yet, I’d still read the second book--and that’s saying something, right? The ending left me speechless, it was one of those with a cliffhanger, where you’re not entirely sure what happened. By the end of the book I was invested in Zelie and Amari’s friendship, and was interested in following their journey together. The cliffhanger was a lot for me, and I found myself interested in what is to come.

Children of Blood and Bone definitely has its flaws, but if I were you I’d still give it a try. Despite being an A:TLA knock-off in some ways, the characters, magic system, and setting were refreshing, and Adeyemi’s quick words and world-building were enough to make me want to know more.
