Resin makes me ravenous. Pressed hash makes me insane. As I prepare for my class in a week. I marvel at the ways I can happily be enticed. Resin's beauty can hardly be qualified with mere words, but just trying to encapsulate its complexity pushes the boundaries of my creativity and I welcome the challenge. Still slightly warm to the touch, the resin drapes limply over my gloved hand. I am always torn at this moment; at once delighted by its delicate pliability, and simultaneously eager to fold the resin onto itself to form a solid ball. Overcoming the urge to endlessly marvel at the thin sheet of translucent hash, I unceremoniously crush the resin into itself. Though crumpled into a misshapen heap, its willful softness reveals its inherent quality and its purity. Free of eye tricking additions like oil, milk, or soda its mocha skin gleams effortlessly. I squeeze and the incomplete mass acquiesces to my steady and assured grip. My I make a cube and squish each side until no air is left. With efficient confidence I roll the tepid hash dough over my left hand. My right hand dominates the slowly forming ball. At first I focus on softening the edges; then rounding into a sleek oblong. I drop the resin onto the parchment and spread my fingers wide. With varying pressure throught my hand, I roll the thick mass into a significantly thinner rod. Experience has taught me to go slowly; massaging the resin into an even, workable rope. Back and forth I coax the resin until every inch of the resin looks the same, providing a smooth reflection of the pale light overhead. Sliding the Hashish along the surface of the paper, I form an infinity shape and my heart expands in my chest. So beautiful... My love for hash is infinite. My love for hash is eternal. Hashy Danksgiving! Today I am giving thanks for being able to make my own medicine. For the lucky relatively few of us, the agency over our own health is incredible. I daily give thanks for being able to grow, process, and consume that which is made from my own hands. Thank you thank you thank you. For every encouraging word. For asswipes who nearly crushed my spirit, but just made me determined to come harder. For every plant that yielded enough to make a decent amount of hash. One of the signs that resin is clean is the ease in which it is manipulated. Pressing reveals so much, including the resin's willingness to stick together as an unblemished mass. Non-nucleated, appropriately sticky - as opposed to a wet sticky which leaves trails of goo on gloves and is not grease, but rather mold waiting to happen - and quite fragrant with sweet licorice wafting up to my nose, this Durban Poison bubblehash templeball (73-159 micron) is a joy to caress. And in mere seconds (that is my normal rolling speed), it is quickly reshaped into a seamless ball again. Holding fast to preconceived notions will result in missing some gems. We hashmakers all "know" where to find the sweet spot where trichomes have the best representation of the plant at that moment both in flavor, melt. Certainly the spot is found in the 73 micron or 90 micron bags. Often 120 has gold too. The 45 micron bag is a fair bet as well. However, who is expecting platinum in the 25? How about the 160? Well sometimes surprises happen. In fact, more often than expected. These fat balls of resin were full melt 160 micron heads washed from cured Platinum OG buds from my 2016 garden. As I began to press the granular resin, the warm water bottle rolled effortlessly as the heads melted almost immediately. The entire process from pressing to rolling took less than 3 minutes. No extra working was necessary. As for fantastic 25s, I remember washing hash a few years back where everything was 1 star save for runs 2-4 of 25 micron which were all 5.5 star. Go figure. @mendodopemusic had me wash some BlackBerry Kush in 2015 that had giant heads. That 190 was gorgeous. New school nods to the old school and takes it's own path. @frenchycannoli has told me stories of Nepalese temple ball legend; large balls of resin masterfully protected from the elements by way of a thin shell achieved by rolling the ball of resin on a cold ceramic plate. In this condition, the templeball could sit out at room temperature; oblivious to the destructive forces of oxidation and humidity. Beneath the outer shell, the inner resin is allowed to transform and mature under it's own "cure." New school templeballs are not so complex, but when created well will also protect their inner cores. In this life change i s the only constant. Two years ago, I gifted a hefty templeball to my friend @canuckcherry. I kept it sealed safe for the few times he snuck a piece or two off of it. Warmed resin is easily manipulated like Play Doh. Forming shapes like this Ess is possible when the partially melted resin is not dirtied by particulate. Green matter creates disruption in the mass, preventing true cohesion of all the resin. Pressing hash is a good form of working meditation for me. The repetitive nature creates an opportunity to get clear about some things. Yesterday, after being in a quiet space for the last week or so, I decide to get my mojo going. I am generally not too hard on myself because as the year ends, and my New Year (it's my birthday too) comes around, I always get to thinking over the last 11 months; a joy and torture at the same time. With a small pile of relatively clean heads to press, I have some singularly focused time. The resin is not 5 or 6 star so melting it effectively requires more than just laying it under the water bottle. While not piping hot, the warmed glass forces my hands to do a jig as I attempt to apply mild pressure without ensuring too much pain. As I roll, I think. With each pass, the resin gives in more and more and my own mind eventually relents and ceases with the eternal questions. And every time I start to rush, the plastic shears, creates a several wrinkles, and I am reminded to go more slowly, more deliberately, and more mindfully. After 15 minutes, when the resin looks and feels like it has melted thorougly, my fingers twitch in anticipation of molding the resin well and revealing a smooth templeball.
