The Plan

“I’ve got a plan!”

That got everyone’s attention. Hearing those words from one who didn’t tend to take charge was enough to garner the interest of those within earshot. Eyes were drawn to the brunette in front of the group, her green eyes shining with enthusiasm. She had a finger pointing toward the sun and was beaming brightly. She knew that her plan was going to work out, come hell or high water.

“Really, Selphie?”

She nodded deeply. “Of course I do! Every good Garden Festival starts with a plan! A plan to try and get more cadets to help out with it and a general theme for the event.”

“Sounds like trouble.”

She shook her head at her heckler. “It’s never trouble!”

“Why should we help out when we haven’t even heard your idea?”

“That’s easy Jonah,” she responded brightly. “We’re going to bring Spring to Trabia Garden this year! Bright pastels, tulips, daffodils, all of the things associated with a nice Spring!”

Jonah, the elder of their group canted his head curiously. He was interested now and wanted to encourage his juniors to keep pursuing their passions. He knew from the brightness in Selphie’s eyes that she was dedicated toward this plan of hers.

Fifteen years old and wanted to see everything in the world. Trabia’s SeeD were always sharing stories with the cadets.

“It sounds like a lot of work,” Jonah continued.

“It is a lot of work,” Selphie conceded. “But it has to start somewhere! Trabia’s next Festival is in the Spring anyway and it’s still the middle of the summer so there’s lots of time! If we start expanding on my idea now, we can pitch it to the student council and get funding! Then, we can make the best Garden Festival that Trabia’s ever seen.”

“Selphie, you say that every year,” a third person in their circle chimed in.

“I know I do Maika and every year, we deliver. Last year had the biggest turnout that the festival has ever seen! We can do way more for the community and Garden as a whole if we keep continuing with this momentum. There’s nothing that we can’t do.”

Maika grinned. “You’ve got big boots to fill this year Selphie.”

“I know I do,” Selphie pressed on. She pointed at each of the six at the table in earnest. “I can’t do it without you guys.

Maika looked to Jonah who was in the middle of considering the youngest of their group. A cool wind blew through the courtyard as the perky brunette pressed on with her idea.

“We can have a grand ball at the end of it and fireworks every single night for the duration of the festival. We can have face painting for the little kids and guided tours of the entire facility. Not only will it give the kids something to take pride in, it will show off all the work that we’ve been doing at Trabia. We can have concerts and scavenger hunts and all sorts of other ideas. We can put a suggestion box in the cafeteria if people have ideas. The Festival from the Spring was such a success because of the input of the entire student body.”

“I see,” Jonah hummed. “You’ve been putting a lot of thought into this haven’t you?”

“I have! And I can’t do it alone,” she carried along. “I was hoping to have the support of you all again this year. The whole Festival might’ve been a super mega disaster without that help you all gave last year. As you know, most of last years committee have transferred to Balamb to write their SeeD exams so there’s—”

“—There’s only you again,” Maika cut in with a grin. “I dunno Selph, it seems like a tall order.”

“And there’s nothing that we can’t do once we put our heads together. I’m sure if you guys pitch in for the committee and help with the planning that we can get the entire student body on board again.”

“Some of us are prepping for exams though, Selphie,” Jonah pointed out. “Some of us simply don’t have the time.”

“I know, I know,” Selphie pressed again. “But like I said, I’ve got a plan and a theme but I can’t do it all by myself. If the senior students at Garden were willing to pitch in then everyone and everything else would fall into place.”

A couple of the others were considering her words seriously as she cast expecting glances at each of them individually. She bent over and rest her hands on the table, her head bowed.

She wanted to do one last festival with her friends before they transferred to Balamb.

“It’s just a few hours a week and there’s still tons of time for you guys to study for your exams. We can do much of the planning on the weekends and every class can contribute ideas for the theme. I just…”

She looked at them with a pleading look. She really didn’t want to do all the planning alone.

“If it’s just a few hours a week,” a fourth jumped in. “I don’t mind lending a hand.”

“Really Michael?” Selphie leaped up from the table excitedly. “You’ll really help me out?!”

He grinned at her. “Of course. I can’t let my dear junior do all the work by herself.”

All it took was one person and Selphie soon had the entire table on board. One after another, her friends all fell into place and her committee was fully formed.

“Great! Thank you so much you guys. It means the world to me that we can do this together.”

It was going to be the best Garden Festival ever.

FF x Disney?

Right now, I think the weakest aspect of KH is the original characters and plot. I don't leaning more into FF more would fix that. It would just be a bigger reminder of that flaw.

However, I'd be up for Noctis meeting Oswald the lucky rabbit, Zack teaming up with Max Goof and Webby from Ducktales, and a Squall and Mickey prequel to KH1.

not in that order but you get the idea.

kH was my intro to FF but FF took its place in my heart. im fine with more FF games instead of FF having a bigger role in KH.

welcome back to fandom hell. Have you gotten into anything new, despite being busy?

Thank you! 💞 One benefit of being away is having a bunch of fan content built up to binge on, so I'm loving that.

I haven't gone crazy for anything, but I am super psyched for the next series of Blue Eye Samurai whenever that's due. It's so pretty and gorey, and I'm keen to see where it goes next. I'm also waiting on Invincible, but I heard from my SO that they're waiting until Amazon adds the mandatory ads before releasing anymore, which fucking sucks. I liked the Atom Eve prequel, though that was a while ago.

Ooh, I started out not gelling with Delicious in Dungeon, but it grew on me really fast. I haven't read it yet, so it's on my list. I also watched a bunch of the live-action manga adaptations - some good, some not so much.

Other than that, I'm still wallowing in old fandoms. I started the FF8 remake a while back and got to the end of disc 2, I think? So I might have to pick that up again...

really want to reread a fic but despite being about kh there are heavy elements of ff7 (and some from ff8) in it to the point where I was getting confused because I knew nothing about final fantasy so the part of my brain that gets very particular about things is saying I Must learn everything about ff7 and 8 in order to enhance my experience except as jrpgs they are both fucking long, especially with 7’s whole continuity of prequels or whatever, and I do want to play both of them but I fear the mindset of “I need to finish both of these before I can do this other thing” will turn it into a chore and suck all the enjoyment out of it so basically I’m in hell

So, I've been setting up an old computer to run a diy home cloud and using that to backup all my old WiPs. And I took advantage of this to completely re-organize my WiPs folder to sort out transcript docs into a separate space, better track finished or 'retired' files, and digging through older fic ideas that I'd forgotten about over time. So I'm going to answer this using some of my older files from fandoms I'm not usually active in these days.

🌈 Share something soft/fluffy from your WIP.

Shawn grinned and considered making a bid for the gift, but decided to stay quiet. Odds were he was on the naughty list anyway; he was lucky to have been picked for the Polar Express at all. Someone else would get the gift... but he was okay with that. The entire experience had been an amazing gift all in itself.

And then, above the din, he heard Santa call out, “Shawn Spencer, come with me.”

From a Psych/Polar Express x-over fic. This is from the prologue where young Shawn gets one of the bells from the reindeer harnesses as the First Gift of Christmas. He's not sure what's going on is really happening, but he believes the magic and spirit are more important than real versus fake. And this is from the last part of the prologue where Shawn's spent the whole trip a bit worried he isn't really good enough, so Santa picking him when he's not being loud and acting out validates that the times he does so with his dad don't actually make him a bad kid.

It's just meant to be a silly little fic with a lot of soft moments. In part about how, despite being unconventional Shawn is a good person who cares about helping others. But its also about Lassiter getting to have a happy Christmas after his divorce from his wife is made official, when he felt like he was really struggling to be happy. And him learning to recognize that opening himself up to new friendships is worth the risk in making himself vulnerable.

I really only got this one so far as the prologue, but re-reading it has made me want to do something with it, whether it's write the fic I once envisioned or just split off the prologue and expand it into it's own fic about kid Shawn.

“There’s something unusual about the Force today,” the ginger haired knight mused. “Perhaps we’ve been summoned because of that. Though… why Master Yoda would say that all Ani and I will be there for is moral support is beyond me. It’s not like you’ve done anything worth reprimanding… lately.”

Anakin snickered, earning a sharp, teasing glare from his master. “You wound me, both of you.” Seifer flung his right hand dramatically against his heart. “Oh, the pain… shall I ever survive?”

“And I’m supposed to learn from him?” Anakin cast a doubtful glance in Obi-wan’s direction.

“Just think, Ani; you’re stuck with him for at least ten years… if not more.”

Mock horror stole across the nine-year-old’s face and he scurried over to cling to Obi-wan’s robes. “Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope!”

From an old WiP where the resolution of Time Compression at the end of FF8 sends Seifer to Coruscant and the Jedi in particular. There's speculation that he might be the Chosen one and gets taken as the padawan. The main fic, however, is Seifer and Obi-Wan as adults, sharing 'custody' of Anakin. Having someone else who might be the Chosen One around makes things easier on Anakin so he feels less pressured to be perfect, Obi-Wan is more laid back because he isn't having to jump straight from being a padawan to raising one all by himself, and the council is a bit more relaxed about inter-personal relationships here so Seifer and Obi-Wan are supposed to be openly in a relationship. This one is from... I dunno, my early college years? I still really like the idea of Seifer getting transported to the Star Wars prequels, though I'm no longer sold on the ship. That said, I really love this interaction here. It's silly and fun, with a shout out to one of the most iconic Star Wars lines of course.

I think I actually had a few different variations on this idea anyway, though I don't know that I wrote them all down.

Additional Notes: I'm thinking there's something in the Restoration Committee, set during any of the games. I'm not usual into prequels, but I think it'd be interesting playing with Leon more recently after he's arrived in Traverse Town, maybe even the day he arrives? Lots of drama and confusion, always fun. Kaos being based on Legend of Zelda and Kingdom Hearts, she fits right in, doesn't need to hide anything. Could join or at least help out the Committee, help deal with all the shenanigans going on in the later games in Radiant Garden. Conversely, in a contemporary setting Kaos is working on restoring her own world, so she might go to Leon for advice, maybe even show him her world?

Could be dark, Kaos being resentful that her world and its people weren't magically restored, so she's looking at Ansem's (any of them) research and Leon is like 'no that's bad and dark' and Kaos is like 'I don't care, maybe it can help me' and drama!

Dissidia has a lot of possibility too! (Coincidentally) Kaos isn't associated with Chaos, but she would be all about checking out a fight before chaos and order. I'll need to refresh my memory of the games, but I think there'd be a lot of fun in confusing cycles of combat.

And...WoFF is just adorable!

Which of your fics do you want more attention for?

I'm actually pretty happy with how things are now. I don't feel overlooked but there's none of the pressure of being really well-known, either, both of which are emotionally hard places to be in for their own reasons. 🖤

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I try but don't always manage because I overthink my response and get anxious. I'm more likely to respond to direct questions or comments that are more in-depth.

What sorts of things do you normally write? Slow burn? Humor? Angst with a happy ending? Some adventure? Emotionally loaded conversations?

Looking at my AO3, it's pretty much gonna be "found family shenanigans" or "you WILL sit down and process your hurt."

(Would it be a jukeboxhound fic if there weren't any emotionally loaded conversations?)

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

A Kingdom Hearts oneshot from years ago with unrequited love, which was me processing having my heart broken and losing my oldest friend. Fic is often my vehicle for self-reflection, which is probably why I always try to end it happily or, at the very least, ambiguously.

What’s a fic that pushed you out of your comfort zone?

I wrote an ABO for a fic exchange. Who even am I anymore?

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Crossovers, only between Final Fantasies, but fusions, yes! Before I accidentally deleted my old Tumblr account, I had an FF7/Guardian (the cdrama) fusion going on, lmao.

Nope. I'm too much of a control freak to share the narrative helm.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I once had a Gundam Wing, 2x5, post-Endless Waltz fic that I had started writing but never posted years and years ago called Buddha: Still Laughing, which I still sometimes think about.

What are you currently working on?

Crashing Like Stars (Jiang Cheng-centric trauma recovery)

Glitterhaze (unpublished; Cloud-centric post-FF7R longfic about gender exploration, dance and embodiment, and, yes, also trauma, meant to be a prequel to ANOTHER fic about Zack coming back and giving us some Clack)

What are your writing strengths?

I like to think I'm not too bad with handling the two emotional extremes of humor and trauma in ways that remain convincingly in character, but YMMV.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Extended scenes and pacing in much longer fic, imo. You can tell I'm used to writing oneshots, ha.

First fandom: either Dragonball Z or Gundam Wing when I was, like, 11

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Maybe History of the Chocobo Wars (FF7), despite being a Harry Potter fusion, because it still makes me laugh. Or maybe the world has teeth (Dishonored), because of the way it tries to explore what it means for a mortal to be the recipient of a god's...love, for lack of a better word. I adore the struggle of trying to dig into spiritual/existential experiences that, by definition, lack language to accurately describe them.

What fic are you most proud of?

Probably this grey house where I come from (Avengers). It's almost a decade old at this point and I'd probably do a lot differently if I were to write it now, but every so often I still get messages from folks saying that it affirmed something for them around domestic violence, sexual abuse, and/or unsafe intimate relationships. I get emotional with every single one because I honestly, genuinely can't think of a better way to have my fics affect someone. 😭

9. Favorite NPC? -- That one dwarf from FF4 that says “I am a farmer”.

19. Which game had the best love story? -- My bias says FF9. The love story was built up, with Zidane and Dagger improving themselves through their interactions with the other. Dagger went from a soft-spoken, passive princess to a more assertive queen who found her strength in her summoning and her relationships with others. Zidane became a less flirty thief who helped Dagger through her decisions and acted as a support for her and their friends. God I love these two. 

29. Favorite summon? -- Bahamut

39. What is your favorite prequel or sequel? -- I haven’t played any prequel or sequel games. I’ve heard pretty good things about Crisis Core and the music’s cool. X-2 looks like fun, especially with the dress-spheres. 

49. Which game had the best ending? -- FF8, because it was over and I didn’t have to draw any more magic. But seriously, FF6 had a pretty cool ending with all of the character themes playing in the ending song. And FF9′s makes me cry every time.

Do you have any favorite works of art or fanfiction that you always go back to, and/or basically accept as canon? -- I really love some of the FF9 fanfiction taking place after the game. “Fleeting Life” by LittleGrumblrAnna (complete) and “Prince Consort” by Baknami (in-progress) are really good. There’s lots of art pieces that I enjoy for the Final Fantasy series as well.

Would you rather be the Creative Director on an FF8 prequel featuring Laguna OR an FF9 sequel featuring Vivi’s descendants?

Tough one, but I think I'd lean towards Laguna. While his story is already told so to speak, I think there's a lot we could do with that, especially gameplay wise.

FF8 remastered early thoughts.

FF8 remastered is a fun time but I wished it got a remake to tighten up some of its story's themes and gameplay mechanics.

The game does give you optional dialogue but I wish they did went full choice based like lnfamous or later Personas.

A smaller scale social links system would be interesting. For example-Zell is the Chariot, Quistis is the Empress, Irvine is the Magician, Selphie is the Lovers, Seifer is the Hanged Man, Rinoa is the Star etc.

My intro to Squall was KH so it's surprising to hear people found him a divisive character when he first debuted.

a compilation full of sequels, prequels and crossover would be fun.

I thought of a prequel where a kid Squall meets Mickey (FF8 x Epic Mickey) but forgets and an interquel where Squall competes in the Reaper's game (FF8 X World ends with you). ;)

My pitch for FF8-2 would be similar to God of war 2018. It would deal with Squall struggling to be a mentor to a new character.

Where does one start when getting into Final Fantasy?

oh my dkjhfdkfjd Heya nonny!

I’d say with patience and dedication if you really want to get in the lore, or on a “here we go!” if you don’t think too much about it.

Final fantasy is a saga of different games happening in different universes. as a result, each numbers are in fact an indication of a new universe. Final fantasy 7 for instance is happening in a futuristic steampunk universe where Final Fantasy 9 has more of a Fantasy edge, with castles and princesses and flying ships. The last FF out is FF15, a fantasy set in much more modern time. 

Aside from the team working on the games, the only real things those games have in common are their creatures and monsters, some of their magic, and some common themes like those of identity. 

The only exceptions are games like Final Fantasy Dissidia, which is basically a massive cross over of all the final fantasy universe. And FF11 and FF14 are both MMORPG, so you shouldn’t start with those games. 

So basically, what I want to say is: you can start by any Numbered Final Fantasy you want. They all have very different and distinct stories, and to each their own favorite. 

As for me, I mostly played the Final fantasy 7 compilation, as it was one of my first video game. I’m slowly getting into FF9 though, and i’m falling in love with the universe, but I’m not enough advanced into it just yet. However, 9 is often recognized like one of the best, if yet udnerrated, ff game.

I have heard a lot of wonderful things about FF8, FF10 and FF13, so if you want to try out by one of those, you can too!

But as I said, I am mostly knowledgeable on FF7. 

(also if you’re here because I mentioned stuff in common between FF and hxh, I talk about similitudes with FF7, so if that’s why you’re curious, you should start with it)

Final Fantasy 7 is one of the few games that also had sequels and prequels (Crisis Core (2007) is a prequel, Advent Children (2005/ it had a remaster in 2009) is a movie sequel, Dirge of Cerberus (2006) is a sequel game to the movie (but i personally didn’t like it much), and there are a few others stuff here and there but it’s already complicated enough).

Still, the best way to get into the Final Fantasy 7 saga is to start by the Original Game: Final Fantasy VII (1997). This game is available on Steam.

and I was trying to find back some reference links I posted a while back but instead i found a summary/tease of the game I made so allow me to quote myself when it comes to the story:

In a Wold of magic and technology, the compagny SHINRA is at the top of the World. This compagny managed to find ways to extract the energy of the planet, called Mako Energy, in order to use it as electricity or others devices. But the compagny itself is rather amoral. In order to get access to some Mako-heavy point on the planet, they started wars, and when things go wrong, they do everything to hide it from public eyes in some amoral ways. Moreover, the extraction of Mako Energy actually weakens the planet.

Cloud Strife, ex-Soldier (Part of the Shinra’s military, Soldiers are the highest rank. They are the strongest, and they all have been subjected to some Mako Energy in little dose to make them stronger), became a Mercenary after an incident in his hometown 5 years ago, provocked by Sephiroth, an ex-Soldier Cloud used to admire, well, before Sephiroth set his hometown on fire.

Not really interested in Politics at first, Cloud will join a group of Rebels called AVALANCHE, who tries to get ride of Shinra in the name of the Planet.

But a bigger threat comes along when Sephiroth comes back with the intend to destroy the Planet once and for all.

In his journey, Cloud will meet a lot of different, colorful characters, most of them who suffered from Shinra’s doing. To them, Cloud will open up and we will realize just like him that there might be more to him that what Cloud himself knows…

Anyway it’s a fun game and I’d Die for Cloud Strife. 

The graphism are kinda old since this is a 1997′s game, but to me, it still holds up, and the story makes up for whatever limitation the game had.

But if it can tease you a little, the game is getting a remake (don’t wait for it tho, knowing Square Enix we will wait 10 years just to get the game) but you can watch the remake trailer and see if it makes you curious about it. The trailer only tease the very first, like half a hour of the game, so there’s no spoilers in it. 

so… ye. coming at me, I’ll just recommand starting with Final Fantasy VII (1997) lmao.

But as I said if you’re curious, or if you liked the game, you can check out any of the other games. I am just not qualified enough to talk about it.

But well I’ve been a FF7 nerd for years (my previous url was FF7 themed, it was a reference to Cloud rip) so I cannot not ramble about it.
