u seem so passionate and as someone who doesn't have a Great Passion in life I am v curious abt that. do u think u were always bound to be interested in writing & medieval Irish literature, regardless of what happened? if u didn't have them, do u think u would have developed different, equally strong Passions (i.e do u think u are just "wired" for passion)? or would u have "missed the boat" so to speak if u didn't come across them? (+ do u have advice for someone like me, w/o a "Great Passion"?)

Oh, that's a really interesting question. I often wonder what would have happened if my grandma hadn't given me The New Policeman and sparked my interest in folklore and trad music that eventually led me to medieval lit, that's for sure.

I do think I'm wired for passion, because I seem utterly incapable of having casual hobbies. Everything I do, I kind of throw myself into, which is not always sensible or practical. I have a history of taking up a new hobby, getting super into it for a year or so (to the point of planning a career or at least a competitive hobby around it), and then moving on to something else. So although I often circle back to the previous hobbies, my past is still littered with those I've abandoned...

I have a deeply all-or-nothing personality, which can be destructive at times. I'm also, frankly, incapable of spending time on anything that bores me, so if it doesn't grab the "all", it gets the "nothing", and I drop it almost immediately. I suspect I may have ADHD, although I haven't been diagnosed, and this seems to be reflected in the way I'll bounce around a handful of different things that I care deeply about, because if I try and do the same thing for too long, I'll get bored and drop it, and things I don't care much about can't grab my interest enough to let me bounce to them.

Hence, as well as medieval Irish literature I also write novels in a range of genres, and between edits for one novel I'll run off and write something completely different, and when I'm not doing that I'm in the dance studio, etc etc. This is a recipe for burnout, and I have chronic pain and fatigue already, so I'm not saying this is a good thing. Just that it seems to be how I'm wired.

But sometimes I feel I care too passionately about too many different things, and I envy those who have One Thing that they're good at, and can focus on, and which they don't periodically have to run away from for a few months so they don't break their interest in it forever.

I don't think there's anything wrong with not being a super intense all-or-nothing kind of person – many therapists would say it's better not to be, as you'll be less inclined to take a "boom and bust" approach to life, i.e. wildly overcommitting to things until you burn out/injure yourself/have a breakdown because you didn't know when to stop. There is a lot to be said for having a casual interest in many things!

That said, if you're finding it super hard to be interested in anything and everything's leaving you cold... you MIGHT be depressed. I've been there. So just worth thinking about. But if you're just Normal Levels of Interested in things, that is completely okay! Not everybody is a hyperfocusing weirdo like me!

Finally, it might just be that you haven't found your thing yet. I didn't really get into the Ulster Cycle properly until final year undergrad, even though I'd been into medieval Irish lit from the start, and it wasn't until I started engaging with it creatively (i.e. writing To Run With The Hound) that I started getting really emotionally invested on more than an academic level. It just needed the right moment and the right circumstances to click.

My advice is to keep exploring what interests you, keep finding new ways to engage with the things that interest you, and don't be afraid to bounce around and try out different ones. But some people are more restrained in their passions and that's not a bad thing – it may even be a good thing in many ways.

I don't mind at all! Thank you for waiting quite a long while though, life has been.... hectic recently, to say the least.

I'll answer the story question here, then list the fics below since there's a lot.

It's a pretty simple story, when my sister and I were 14 and 16, we had a dream of starting a youtube channel as siblings, and we were going to use noble titles. I picked LadyPfenix for mine and opened my tumblr account with that in mind, but the idea never materialized beyond usernames and it has long since outlasted that dream. At this point I've had it too long to bother changing it, even though I'm using Admiranda most other places I go. Some things just stick.

I don't know that I have a top ten fave fics ever, it's hard for me to quantify on that level, but I'll definitely lay out the ones I keep going back to years on down the line even long after I've left the fandom. There's definitely something special about them that I will always enjoy.

HOWEVER, if you do still do fic recs could you be so kind as to lend me a hand? I am looking for Stony fics, but I really despised the Civil War arc that went on in MCU (I grew up with the Avengers Assemble tv show so found family in the Marvel universe is pretty much my lifeblood).

Anyway, I’m looking for works that specifically recognize that Steve is more than kind of traumatized by the fact that he can never go home and hasn’t adjusted to modern living as well as everyone thought. (I think I’m just a sucker for Steve being in emotional pain). I read a few on AO3, but if there’s a wealth to be found, then I’m missing it by a mile. Are there any that you would recommend? (They don’t have to be Stony either).

Hey, I was wondering if you might be able to offer some advice re: Ph.D.s in Irish Studies? (No worries if not! This is kind of a big ask...) I have a MSc in a different but tangentially related subject and I've been wanting to go back to school specifically for early Irish literature. Do you mind offering some insight into what programs are best for that sort of thing? What the benefits of a Ph.D. vs. a 'lower level' degree would be?

hey, sorry, i’m only an MA student so i don’t really know too much about PhDs, and i’m guessing from your spelling/word choices that you might be american? in which case the system is a bit different, PhD programmes over there tend to be longer and have more taught elements than over here (7 years vs 3 or 4 years), but i’m not too well-informed on the differences because i’ve no plans to go to the US for study

i guess if you wanted to do early irish material including language you’d need to make sure whatever programme you picked would allow you to do that ab initio (that is assuming you haven’t studied old irish before) -- i’m sure some PhD programmes would as it’s not like that many unis offer old irish but i would imagine some expect prior knowledge?? other than that it kind of depends how closely related your MSc is in terms of like. whether you’ve already developed the skills you’d need (things like palaeography and working with medieval texts) or whether you’d be starting from scratch, and what the prereqs would be for any programme you entered

also if funding applications etc would require you to already have a thesis/dissertation topic then that might be harder if you haven’t studied the subject before (and i imagine since there is so little funding in this field that it might be harder to get funding without a demonstrable background in it, but that is really pure speculation on my part)

anyway there aren’t a huge number of places that offer celtic studies but it really depends what country you’re in and like i said, i don’t really know a vast amount about the US (or, tbh, anywhere that isn’t the UK/Ireland). there are some long-established celtic programmes in north america (harvard & toronto among others) and also medievalists/celticists lurking within english or comp lit departments elsewhere... in ireland there’s ucc, maynooth, tcd; in the uk there’s asnac @ cambridge and oxford will maybe get its shit together now that they’ve got a chair of celtic again idk, also glasgow, edinburgh and aberdeen offer celtic tho with a scottish emphasis (as you might expect) and some of the welsh unis likewise with a welsh emphasis (haven’t looked too much at those). there are various places in europe that also do it like utrecht, but i know even less about those

really i think with a PhD you’d need to know what you’d be aiming to research and then try and narrow down a supervisor who works on that stuff, but again, i’m only an MA student so i haven’t really gone through that whole process yet. sorry i can’t be more useful!

i guess the main advantage of an MA or something instead of going straight into a PhD is it’s a much smaller commitment, bc if you haven’t studied it formally before you may get a year into it and be like “oh this is enough actually, i don’t need to do this for another 5 years” or whatever -- there was this one academic i was talking to about my ideas who would have been a great fit for a supervisor but it would’ve meant skipping straight to PhD instead of doing a master’s first and i just wasn’t ready to commit to that, financially and emotionally (even tho my current supervisor keeps telling me my ideas are PhD-sized and need to be made smaller to suit a master’s lol)
