The Enderby Shield, Enderby, Leicestershire 350-250 BCE, The British Museum, London

Made from willow bark, this 2300 year old shield is the only known example from Europe. Unlike other shields of this period. it has no metal parts. Faint areas pigment and scored line of red lines decorate the front and it has been pierced several times, perhaps by a bone-tipped spear.

The shield was found in a pit where the waterlogged conditions prevented its decay.

I call those things oh his back his “ridges”. They are just rows of hair that run down his back to the end of his tail. The hair on his ridges is a little bit longer than the rest of his fur. Not a mane, not dreads, not anything like that. It’s kind of similar to the band that runs down the back of a honey badger.

Shiver Pt 3

Grimlock x Reader

• That soft voice chains the confusion and anger, making him feel more like himself. Like before. Venting against you, he tips his head and carefully grips your leg in his jaws to tug you closer. And no matter how careful he is, you start screaming again and kick him in the face with the other leg. Growling a warning, he ducks his head and gets a better grip on your torso and carries you to the door of the cabin, head lowering to gently drop you as you scramble away until you hit the door. Nudging you gently, he vents again. “Run, Grimlock chase,” he warns, tail swaying behind him. Because there’s an appeal in that, in running you down and catching you again. Backing up slightly, he watches you stand and fumble at the door. Yelping when you get it open and nearly fall inside, the door slamming behind you. Huffing, he curls himself about the cabin.

• Foot sliding, you stagger and almost fall. There’s enough light filtering in from the holes in the rotten roof to see that you stepped on a handful of spent shell casings. Heart racing, little details snag at you. The little table overturned near the door. Sheets dragged into the floor near the army style cot in a corner. A dropped box of shells, unused ones littering the floor. Shuddering, you make your way to the cot. Who’d been here before you? Did they get away? There’s not much useful left behind despite the previous owner leaving in a hurry, but you do find a battery powered lantern and turn it on. Skin prickling as you catch a glimpse of Grimlock outside the one window, those baleful yellow optics staring while you drag the cot into the very center of the room and cover the thin moldering mattress with the sheets so you can sit on it. Staring at the closed door and wondering how far you’d get. He has to sleep sometime. Right?

• Drifting in and out of recharge, he’s dimly aware of a branch cracking in the woods. A distant crash. Those spindly four legged things running from another hunter? Lip lifting to show sharp denta, he rumbles. He’s chased them sometimes, always letting them escape. Fun, but they can’t speak to him like you can. Knows you’re frightened, but he just wants someone to talk to even though it’s so hard for him. Someone who doesn’t only see a weapon to be wielded in an endless war.

• A scream rings out in the night and your breath catches. A cougar or panther? You’ve always heard they sound like a person screaming. But then you hear someone scream for ‘help’ and your heart races. Dust rains down on you as Grimlock moves against the cabin and then roars to make you clap your hands over your ears, the lantern hitting the floor and rolling. There’s a crash from outside. Screaming, roaring, and explosions. The military come to the rescue? Except the sounds eventually die down and you shudder as Grimlock’s optic appears at the window, searching until he finds you. Did he just eat someone?

• Good. Still there, staring up at him with wide eyes. Venting, he rubs his muzzle against the side of the cabin to make it creak. Still irritated at the Insecticons invading his space. They’d been chasing a little human, but he’d let them take them, unwilling to pursue and possibly lose his own. Tries not to think about what might become of that human, because there’s something very wrong with the Insecticons. A ravenous hunger and willingness to devour anything and everything. Not just energon. Saving that human might mean losing you, though. And he needs that soft voice of yours to help him think. Keep him calm.

if i had a nickle for every time a powerful jjk character with a unique cursed technique had their best friend's body taken over by a prehistoric curse - something that they felt was solely their fault - and watched as the system they were trapped in slowly sucked the life out of them, but their best friends were also the only people who saw them as PEOPLE and not as weapons and questioned the system that was abusing and exploiting them, and the said character couldn't get out of the system and instead spent their entire life trying to be The Best only to be dehumanized in life after death and inevitably suffering the same fate as their best friends... i'd have two nickles. which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

like can you imagine 3rd life red winter treebark with trex's that they use for intimidation tactics and ride out in the night to put fear into the rest of the server

or desert flowers alliance having a mix of raptors and protoceratops that flower husbands care for like their cattle and scarian raises like pets

and then when they go to war there's all these dinosaurs fighting and and like the players would have to adapt in the beginning yk they'd make goat horns that sounds like the calls of opposing dinosaurs (ignore that goats didn't exist in mc yet) or make weapons out of teeth and claws to match their team of prehistoric PREDATORS GUYS ARE YOU SEEING MY VISION?? IM NORMAL ABOUT THIS

FoF rewatch ep 2: or, Heroes, assemble! (gifs and loose thoughts)

Having a spotty short-term memory really works in my favor lol I get to rediscover moments that I somehow forgot existed, like ZYZ fake-gagging at WX's endearment for ZYC (activating ZYC's Annoyed Cat mode). Just how the turntables, oh Great Demon...

(The way ZYC grabs his sword at the second sneeze...)

The vow scene establishes that not only is ZYC's Cloud Light Sword the only weapon that can truly kill ZYZ *dead*, killing ZYZ with it is also the only way to prevent a new malicious energy vessel from being born. Absolutely no pressure, ZYC.

It's fascinating that even at this very early stage, ZYC's hate is not *blinding*. It's intense, enough to squeeze tears out of his eyes (also can we just appreciate how openly ZYC expresses his emotions? He seems so closed off and stiff otherwise, and at the same time ... ::gestures at his tears::) but it's not all-consuming. ZYC asks questions and listens attentively when the demon responds, even seems affected somewhat when ZYC mentions being a vessel for the malicious energy. At the same time, he won't hesitate to swear an oath on his very soul to avenge the deaths of his family. And ZYZ looks at him, his would-be executioner, as if he was his savior... Right from the get-go, we're being alerted that nothing is quite as it seems at the first glance.

There's a certain smugness to WX in her early dealings with ZYZ that grates on me just as much on the rewatch. Sure, there's the fact that she's smart and can hold her own against him, and watching them banter and call each other's bluffs is pretty delightful...

And then there's her threatening to kill herself just to get a piece of information that he already refused to provide and is not vital to the issue at hand. I can just imagine how utterly stupid and wasteful that must've looked like to him, even if he didn't already have a vested interest in her wellbeing. You're lucky that he does care (and that this particular cell wasn't blocking his powers, or at least not enough), girlie!

On the first watch, the scene with ZYC sitting at The Table of Brooding and looking at the tokens for the remaining members of the team with a clear apprehension was, at least to me, just pretty (look at that view! Look at his eyelashes! Ahem.). On the second watch you go, foreshadowinggggg!

The Table of Brooding *and* Poignant Conversations:

Our second glimpse at baby!YiChen and I realize that most of the memories we get to see of him are set in winter. It's a great touch, visually placing that sad, broken kid in a season that appears as dead, cold, and empty as his heart used to be; at the same time it seems to imply that even years later, a part of ZYC is still frozen and alone in that snowy landscape. ::hugs baby!YiChen::

I unironically love how some things did not get any clearer on the rewatch, like the whole Ying Long prophecy/ curse is still confusing to me. If ZYZ is over 30,000 years old then that would mean that for just as long there was only one "evilest demon" to kill; if there was any other demon that was killed by a Bing Yi descendant *after* Ying Long, it should be recorded somewhere, but there's no mention of it ever (correct me if I missed something). Soooo the only "evil demon" killed by the Cloud Light Sword that we know of was Ying Long, literally in prehistoric times when the world was still being formed. And Fan daren is not of Bing Yi lineage... how does he of all people know about the prophecy in the first place? (did humans even have speech that far back? How was the prophecy even heard/ understood, not to mention recorded?) How does he know that it's accurate, and that it's a curse?

Even our swordsman appears confused, but at the same time what he mostly cares about is that, curse or no, it means he'll get to avenge his brother and father. Even if he finds it odd that the demon *wants* to die so much he goes as far as to extract an oath from him. (This surely is not a set-up for a tragedy of Greek proportions, nothing to worry about ZYC)

Another moment that I forgot about, which once again proves that this whole show is like getting lost in a gallery - there's stunning portraits, landscapes, and still nature wherever you look.

To continue with the foreshadowing, once we get to meet PSJ for the first time, she's, as someone already rightfully pointed out, *blindfolded*. It's an absolutely brilliant, if small, detail that means so much more once you get to know this character.

Case in point for Bai Jiu and his silver needle...

(Also, it just hit me that they show him seeing patients at the Jixin Clinic... can we say more foreshadowing???

Which actually begs another question... how has ZYZ *not* recognized the place??? Did he literally erase all of his memory of it - together with what happened here - from his mind?)

Even the way WX and ZYZ went about recruiting PSJ and Bai Jiu foreshadows what their respective dynamics will be - WX will flirt like whoa and PSJ might be a grump, but she'll be there to catch WX whenever the goddess needs her; and ZYZ, as much as he seems to enjoy teasing Bai Jiu, will remain endlessly patient and gentle with him at the same time.

(Bai Jiu could've had another, more mischievous elder brother in ZYZ is all I'm saying, had it not been for we all know what(s), as well as his hero-worship/ fixation on ZYC...)

Case in point, the whole scene of Bai Jiu arriving at the Demon Hunting Bureau:

Then we have this - hilarious to me - moment when we get reintroduced to ZYC via Bai Jiu's admiring eyes, but all ZYC seems to notice is ZYZ:

ZYC had Bai Jiu at 你好 (not that I blame him lol)

(On the rewatch, this totally reads as hero-worship/ teenage crush, and I love love the found brothers story we get with these two, and *also* can you imagine how much the shipping potential would've increased had we gotten an older Bai Jiu, as was supposedly planned? I guess even GJM was not able to make *that* happen...)

How fast does WX go from snickering at Bai Jiu to running to PSJ's side once the archer arrives?

Devi

Devi, also known as Mahadevi or 'Great Goddess', is an all-embracing Mother Goddess first worshipped in India in Prehistoric times. In the Vedic period, she was assimilated into the Hindu pantheon and so came to represent the female energy or Sakti (Power) of her husband Shiva. Both Devi (meaning goddess in Sanskrit) and Sakti may also be used more generically to reference any female Hindu goddess, especially Parvati, Lakshmi, and Sarasvati. Devi is most often manifested as the fearsome female warriors Durga and Kali, both of whom famously killed a number of terrible demons in Hindu mythology. Devi is also the mother of Nandi, Shiva's doorkeeper and bull; Skanda, the six-headed god; and Ganesha, the elephant-headed god.

Devi's character has two opposing sides represented by various separate female deities: as Uma, the benevolent, and as Durga, the terrible. It is as the latter, more fierce personification that she is most frequently worshipped. Her dark side can also take the form of the fearsome black goddess Kali. The deity has a myriad of many other names and may, for example, also be referred to as Vindhyavasini, Kanya (the Virgin), Mahamaya (the Illusion), and Bhutanayaki, the queen of the Bhuta, those ghosts and goblins who haunt graveyards, make the dead live again, and trick the living so that they might feast on their flesh.

The Two Sides of Devi: Uma & Durga

Devi's more benevolent side is worshipped as Uma, and this facet of her character is represented as both beauty and light. This softer side is also referred to as Jaganmata (Mother of the World), Gauri (Yellow and Brilliant or Golden), Bhavani, Haimvati, and Parvati (the Mountaineer).

Devi's dark side is represented as the terrible Durga (the Inaccessible) who has ten arms, an impressive armoury of weapons, and who rides a magnificent lion or tiger. This side is further manifested in the forms of Kali, Kalika or Syama (the Black Goddess); Candi or Candika (the Fierce), in which guise she killed many a demon or asura; and Bhairavi (the Terrible). Worshippers of this face of Devi seek her favours and dark powers and so make blood sacrifices and perform wild rituals in the ceremonies of Durga-puja, Carak-puja, and the Tantrikas which call on Durga's sexual and magical powers.

MONOTONE PREHISTORIC CARDS!!

Anyways here's a short story dump, mostly how Star and Fang became pals and how Juno was first brought

"Long ago, when fossils used to live and roam, there came our first alphas known in history. Fang; who represented the falling and rising Sun of the sky for Zios. He was quick, bold, and sturdy. His powers were made from action. Then there was Star; who represented the Night's fall and silence of the willows for Endress. She was strong, quiet, and stealthy. Her powers were made from voice. These two were known for their gods and differences. They were sworn to never meet or reconcile. That was their purpose. Overtime, one of the alpha's recognized the other's talent. It was Fang who fell first. He couldn't figure out why he felt so much care and warmth for his enemy. He grew soft and Star took notice. She could've taken down Fang if she wanted to for how weak he got. Endress would have been pleased with it. But instead she didn't. She decided to play along with Fang's kindness and speeches. Over the steady nights, Fang and Star grew close. They shared stories about their lives and what they wish to see in the future for their homes. They bonded over each thing one or the other brought up. As they spoke, the more they recognized they weren't as different as they thought they might be. However, their gods were not impressed by their actions. Zios was the first to find a way to break one from the other. As for Endress, he suggested an idea for the two to Zios. He spoke truth about how the two could form enough of a weapon against those wretched phantoms. How they could stop them once and for all if given the chance. Zios, was quick to agree with Endress' wishes. And with that, Star and Fang worked together, bringing their homes together for peace and protection. They formed new lands, titling their new home as Baloosh. Star and Fang were finally happy. But their story didn't end there. On a cold, misty night, the two were awoken by Lady Mira herself. A gift she brought them. She spoke softly of it, calling the gift of light and fate. Something new that could grow great. When the goddess left, Star and Fang decided on its name. They called their gift...

Juno."

Still on my dragonborn hyper-fixation bs because of Baldur’s Gate

(in between violently resting my wrist because carpal tunnel *and* cysts popping up right on in there)

I started this just practicing simplifying different body types, I think I still have a lotta room to improve; but, what this ended up being was trying to see if I could kinda break up my dragonborn designs to have more diverse facial structures based on different creatures.

Going way too in depth under the break (like a lot, be warned)

Shocking no one, I used a little bit of real scientific theory in what I based each chroma pictured here on.

White Dragonborn

Sehkmet is an outlier however because I mostly use monitor lizards for her references and there’s uh, not too many reptiles in the cold areas white dragons usually reside in. But I can apply the volume rule! Which summarized is why there were so many megafauna during ice ages, the more volume an organism possesses, the more efficiently it retains body heat.

So with more practice honestly, I’d like to get better at drawing her bigger. But essentially in my head, white dragonborn would be the largest chroma of dragonborn on average, Sehkmet herself is just grazing 7’

They have an easier time packing on fat and muscle and can deal with cold weather the best with a dense layer of fur/proto-fur like structure that covers the initial base of scales

Black Dragonborn

What I recall of the normal habitat of black dragons is that it tends to be swampy. I designed a crocodile based black dragonborn a long time ago, and just pulled from there. So I leaned slightly into basing them on piscivorous reptiles. Semi-aquatic adaptations leftover, even if they don’t live on coasts or in marshes.

So thick paddle-like tails are considered the norm in black dragonborns, I think a cool trend that’s be popular with younger black dragonborns would be painting the raised flat portions of their tails with bright colors or designs.

Speaking of looks, very shiny scales, any black dragonborns that have fur or feathers would similarly have them very sleek

Much like white dragonborn, they build muscle and fat stores easily, a well-fed black dragonborn could rely on fat stores for almost a year if necessary.

Blue Dragonborn

I’m a bit undecided on blue dragonborn, mainly because I only have designed and played one and don’t know too much about blue dragons off the top of my head, so this is me making stuff up. Since their breath weapon is lightning, I like the idea of leaning towards high altitude animals.

They don’t have as much pressure to be able to continuously produce a lot of body heat or go without food, so on average, they shed extra fat and muscle quickly if not careful bc fast metabolism.

Very colorful, plumage and frills type, they’re pretty boys I don’t make the rules.

Great eyesight, especially if they lean more bird like. Rip Fara, eyes taken from you too soon (ignore the fact it’s my fault)

Red Dragonborn

I wanted to get a little prehistoric with red dragonborn, canonically red dragons are pretty evil aligned and malicious, so I wanted to make red dragonborns look a little exotic(?). Give them a facial structure that to other species and even dragonborn might be difficult to read (permanent rbf?). Red dragons tend to favor badlands, mesas, and mountains which is very fun.

Titus is a bit of a special case, he’s got a case of too-hot-ouchie-itis. Aka, the peril from wof treatment. Too hot to touch. But on average, red dragonborn don’t run as warm as would be expected. They’re from hot climates so their bodies wouldn’t need to have gotten good at producing high body heat

On that note, they tend to not be fans of cold weather. Dragonborn aren’t reptilian or cold-blooded, so it doesn’t have any extra negative impact. RDs just tend not to enjoy it

They got beef, muscle development is top tier. A lot of RDs naturally have pretty dense musculature but it’s not the most obvious

I like the idea, with red dragons being pretty quick to violence, that RDs skin is kind of loose around the neck and thicker than most other dragonborn

Gold Dragonborn

Ok, here’s where I had very little to go off. Gold dragons are solitary, regal, and not picky about environment from what I could find. So I said fuck it, they’re snakey, idc if some people have preconceived ideas that snakes are evil. These dragons and dragonborn are snakey. And I also, admittedly, don’t have a lot of ideas of common traits or things like the other chroma as of now ;-;

Anyway, this has been another instance of: *putting too much thought into arbitrary things to justify why I gave a dragonborn a crocodile face and another dragonborn a snake face*
