Vet Med in Warrior Cats: Oncology (Cancer)
Disclaimer
Pebblefur, a Windclan deputy who appears in Code of the Clans, was stated to have died from a “strange, agonizing lump in his belly”. Shellheart, a former Riverclan deputy and father to Crookedstar, was also stated to have a similar painful lump in his abdomen, which caused him to retire and is suspected to be the cause of his death. The medicine cat in Crookedstar’s Promise, Brambleberry, stated that she had seen this condition before and that cats who suffer from it never get better. Ravenpaw has this same condition in Ravenpaw’s Farewell, which leads to his death.
These cats are likely suffering from a form of gastrointestinal cancer, and the most common presentation of GI cancer in cats is small intestinal lymphoma. Signs of intestinal cancer include vomiting, inappetence, diarrhea, and weight loss. While vomiting and diarrhea were not mentioned in the books, Shellheart and Ravenpaw both appear to be suffering from pain and gradual weight loss. Intestinal tumors can also lead to perforation, which would cause death fairly rapidly. Most lymphomas are small cell, which is a low grade lymphoma, and has a slow onset and progression of clinical signs. This is consistent with the three cats in warriors who were seen to have cancer, as Shellheart and Ravenpaw both knew that they were dying as their pain slowly got worse.
In a veterinary clinic or hospital, small intestinal lymphoma would be diagnosed with a combination of histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and PCR for Antigen Receptor Rearrangement. It would be treated with a combination of chlorambucil (a chemotherapy drug) and prednisolone (an anti-inflammatory). Expected survival time is about two years with treatment. Medicine cats would have no way to know what the cause of the symptoms was, and would have no treatments for it even if they did. The best that they can do is to provide supportive care and try and ease their pain until death.
In the novella Cloudstar’s Journey, Petalfall is described as having periodic seizures and progressive weakness after suffering from an illness. As the prey grows scarce in Skyclan, she eats less and becomes weaker and has more frequent seizures until she passes. It is possible that Petalfall could have had a tumor in her brain since they can cause seizures, but this is never confirmed. Since the seizures were noted to have started after Petalfall fell ill, she is more likely to be suffering from meningitis or encephalitis after the infection spread to her nervous system. This topic will be covered in the neurology section.
Other common cancers in cats that are not seen in warriors include squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth, skin, and nose, fibrosarcomas in skeletal muscles, and mammary tumors in intact females. All of these tumors could be visible in later stages without imaging or surgery, but none of them appear to be mentioned in the series. As stated before, medicine cats don’t have diagnostic or treatment options for any type of cancer. One explanation for this is that the warriors’ lifespans are shorter than most domestic cats and that many characters die of other causes before reaching an advanced age. However, since they live outside, have near constant sun exposure, and none of them are spayed or neutered, I would expect a much higher rate of squamous cell carcinoma (especially in pink skinned cats) and mammary gland tumors.

sorry this is just me rambling about veterinary stuff & i don't remember how to do a read more or if tumblr even has that function. it's nothing major or terrible
so bubo's got a lot going on right now. he spent a couple nights in the hospital last month with bronchitis/asthma (main symptom was abdominal breathing; cats should not be breathing so hard that they have to use their abs to move air in & out of their lungs). while he was there they also diagnosed him with hyperthyroidism & lymphocytosis based on blood work. this is on top of his prior history of head trauma, neurological damage, feline viral rhinotracheitis, eosinophilic granuloma complex, food allergies that cause his skin to get red & angry & start sloughing off if he eats [checks notes] MEAT. ANY KIND OF MEAT. WHAT KIND OF GOD MAKES AN OBLIGATE CARNIVORE THAT'S ALLERGIC TO MEAT?
oh & he also barfs when he purrs too much.
ANYWAY. his breathing is better now but he still clearly has a secondary infection because he has yellow-green nasal discharge that isn't improving with his current antibiotic. he's on methimazole for his thyroid & there's not really a way to tell if that's working without blood work, so we'll do that in 2 weeks. i was supposed to taper him down on prednisolone to only every other day, but now it looks like his skin might be going bad again & that's so hard to control once it starts, so i'm still giving the pred daily (eosinophilic granuloma complex is an autoimmune disease that attacks the skin & pred is an immune suppressant).
i thought i was going crazy cuz to me it looks like the left side of his face - specifically his ear, that bald spot cats have in front of their ear, & his lips - gets kind of red & puffy in the nighttime, but ONLY the left side, & ONLY at night. his left eye also waters. he also has a weird little sore in the crook of his left arm (i mean... left front leg. on the cranial aspect of the left front leg just distal to the elbow, ok? if you wanna get technical).
i took the above photos to show his vet at his next appointment; he's clearly got a fat lippy & he's started developing comedones (cat acne) on his chin. he also just seems dumpy! he's a cat so it's hard to tell but he seems to be sleeping more than usual & is just quiet & not himself. at the appointment with his regular vet i feel like she just kind of brushed off the lymphocytosis, but since that was confirmed by a pathologist & can be a sign of lymphoma or non-viral leukemia, i'm worried about it. the answer is probably that he needs to start seeing an internal medicine specialist again, cuz i'm getting really sick of being passed around the office & subjected to these guessing games. i know that's how veterinary diagnostics work but... i'm just frustrated. they don't follow up or follow through. i was technically supposed to already have a referral to an internist. he was supposed to have an ultrasound like 6 months ago. plus they told me that nobody in town does radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroid cats & that's not true.
idk. i'm just writing. i like to talk about veterinary details cuz i guess it helps me feel more in control. i've been working on this cat's cascade of problems for 11 years. god doesn't want this cat to be, but i know better than god. also the vet said "he could have a few more years left" & that really bothered me because he's ONLY 12. i know he's been through a lot but he's gonna live to be 20 at least. all my cats live forever. don't make me think about my cat's mortality when my dog just died last year.

i'm in med school and honestly i cannot imagine surviving vet school. like i have to learn about ONE animal and it's a struggle. i cannot imagine learning about several. the anatomy is different, the physiology, everything i can think of you'd have to learn so many times over. neuro must actually be insane. congrats on B, that's no easy feat!!
Like med school and vet school are so hard in their own ways but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous of med students only having to learn about one species. We learn about bovine, equine, canine, and feline for everything at minimum, plus all the other stuff they throw into the mix. Like you can give dogs prednisone, but you have to give cats prednisolone bc they can’t breakdown prednisone.

Ok, so speaking as someone who works in the pharmacy of an animal hospital, you can hide the bitter medicine taste a bit. After all, we have to convince pets to take the gross medicine and sometimes you need to jazz it up with a bit of compounding magic. For instance, take prednisolone. It's known to be bitter and gross, especially in liquid form, which is sometimes the only way people can get it into a cat. So compounding pharmacies flavor it. Most animal flavorings are what you'd expect for a dog or cat, like chicken, beef, bacon- but when it comes to really bitter meds we reach for the secret recipe: double chicken marshmallow. Sounds gross, I know, but the marshmallow supposedly helps cancel out the bitter so the chicken can shine through. I'll admit, I have not tried it myself to see firsthand. They do this for more than liquids too, compounded bitter block tylosin tablets used to smell like malted vanilla milkshakes. The new formula smells like honeycomb breakfast cereal. We keep a few compounding liquid flavors in house too, in case the pet can't wait for the meds to ship. The banana bread flavor smells absolutely fantastic. That stuff is concentrated though, like the vanilla extract of flavor enhancers. We measure it out in drops per mL of total liquid. I live in fear of dropping and shattering the tuna flavor vial like a terrible olfactory bomb.

Man, as a vet, I really never thought I would have to treat my own dog. A bee stung her and she was having an allergic reaction and I had to run to the clinic and bring prednisolone.
I'm fucking out of breath and my mom is in shock cz she had never seen a dog with urticaria

From Go To Whoa: Saturday Round-up 2 December 2017 With temperatures edging up towards 30°C in the morning, it was hot work out there with the GLU run crew on Saturday. 😅 We concentrated on our cadence. My cadence is pretty good - it's the power drive I lack. But after so many years on and off catabolic prednisolone, that is to be expected - fast twitch die first! My 'thumbs-up' in the photo is a bit awkward though (sorry Vanessa ). I had a whey protein-boosted coffee chill ready when I got home. Being on prednisolone, it is important to give my muscles their protein building blocks soon after exercise to prevent muscle breakdown. Likewise older women should get down amino acids like leucine to offset lean muscle loss after exercise, as hormonal changes mean some carbohydrate uptake is impeded and the body finds protein an easy second option - we don't want to lose our hard-won gains! 💪 Getting the tree done is taking the whole weekend: out of the box and assembled on Friday; branches arranged and lights up on Saturday; hopefully decorated on Sunday! Mitzy likes to be in the heart of the action and she doesn't mind posing for the camera either! 🐶🎄🎀 My Pukka Herbs advent calendar offered 'three wise mints' today. Mint is not my favourite tea but this was a nice one! (And peppermint is soothing to the gut 🍃). I was introduced to the deliciousness of white anchovies in Croatia and was excited to remember I had some in the fridge. I love it when lunch is quick, easy, nutritious and lowcarb 🐟 In the evening the family gathered for a barbecue at my brother's to farewell my nephew on his travels to Scandinavia and Northern Europe. Going from a warm Summer night in Perth to icy adventures in the Artic Circle will be a startling change! ❄✈⛄

My boy, Toby, was diagnosed with a rare disease last year in August.  Dachshunds are predisposed to this disease.  This disease is called “Nodular Sterile Panniculitis”.  It is an inflammation of the fat-containing tissues just under the skin.  The cause is unknown.  It could be caused from vaccines, it is considered an autoimmune disease.
When I brought him to my vet last year, it started with a small ulcerated lump.  Toby’s doctor told me it was a sebaceous cyst.  On the way out the door, he petted Toby and said it feels like another cyst, hopefully it doesn’t ulcerate.  A few days later, that cyst opened.  Back to the vet’s office.  A few days later, there were a few more lumps that ulcerated, it looked like nail punctures.
I went back to the vet, they shaved around the ulcerated lumps and cleaned the wounds. The vet took blood tests to verify it wasn’t another ailment.  At first, they thought he was going under something where nails were sticking out.  I double checked under my bed for nails but didn’t find anything.
Finally, I went back to the vet with my Toby.  The vet had to look into their medical books to see what was wrong with my Toby.  That’s when they came up with the “sterile nodular panniculitis” diagnosis.  The treatment was prednisolone and antibiotic doxycycline.   He was on the antibiotic for a few weeks but with this disease the prednisolone had to be weaned off very, very slowly so once it started healing that it would stay in remission and not come back.  However, the vet also told me that being on prednisolone can cause him to get Cushing’s disease.
I always brought my other dachshund with me when I took Toby to the vet as she has separation anxiety.   I went to the vet for a recheck for Toby’s ulcers and also I noticed that his back leg muscles seemed to be thinning.  As I was leaving the vet’s office, Toby’s vet pointed at my Scarly (dachshund) and said Scarly is really going to miss him.  WHAT! WHAT!  I thought to myself.  WHAT DO YOU MEAN?  I am not ready to lose my boy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went home and did some research and decided to get Toby a new vet.  I switched vets and explained Toby’s situation along with all his history from the vet that was treating him.  First thing I asked her was if she ever heard of this disease.  She told me that she has had a few of them which immediately made me feel better.  She did tell me that she thought the level of prednisolone dosage was too high and immediately lowered it.  She did a blood test and was going to contact an animal dermatologist for recommendations.  In the meantime, she did give him a broad spectrum antibiotic.
The result was that Toby’s wounds were healing and no new ones were popping up.  But she did confirm that he needed to be taken off the prednisolone very slowly.
The blood test revealed that the prednisolone made Toby’s liver enzyme extremely high like “off the charts” high.  I was extremely glad that I changed vets and now Toby also needed to be treated for his liver.  Our new vet put him on Denamarin which did a fantastic job to bring down his liver enzymes.  2 of the 3 liver enzymes are now back to normal and his ALP is still high but keeps coming down.  His vet did say that because of his age (13 years old) his ALP may not get back to normal.
Toby was finally weaned off his prednisolone last May (2020).  Unfortunately, I believe it came back last month along with a diagnosis of pancreatitis, nodule found in pancreas and spleen.
Check my next blog for how my Toby is doing.
You can also check out my store at Zazzle where I have pets personalized items where you can put your pups photo.

I was so tired the day before yesterday that I forgot to give Phoenix his pill. Which is bad with prednisolone. I only missed one other time after 2 years. Thats how out of sorts/tired I was from last week running back and forth from those dogs (and taking them to dog daycare and having a headache that made me sick one day-- which was the day mom drove me and the day there was a bad snowstorm-- and going to another house overnight another day and not sleeping the whole night). I never want to be like that again
That's how little I can handle. If I can't do a simple pet sitting job without falling apart, crying uncontrollably, blabbering on social media, pressing the car's gas pedal instead of the break, and forgetting my cats crucial pill, what can I do!??!?!?!

My mother has a very anxious semi feral cat, and in an effort to get him to stop overgrooming and help his intermittent cystitis, our vet prescribed him prednisone. It's working really well- low dose every other day and he's calmer, more interactive with humans, more playful with the other household cats and just generally happier in every measurable way. I've just never heard of this. It was my impression that increased anxiety was a more likely effect of steroids. Our vet is an old school country vet, is this just an outdated treatment? I'm concerned about Cushing's with long term steroid treatment, but... it's working. Have any of you heard of or used prednisone for anxiety in a cat?
gettingvetted here.
Prednisone (and Prednisolone, which is the only form that cats can use so it’s more likely what your vet prescribed for your cat) basically decreases inflammation and suppresses the immune system. So it can help prevent itching and pain (and thus help with overgrooming) and also decreases the amount of inflammation in the bladder (and thus helps with stress cystitis). Iatrogenic Cushing’s disease is much more common in dogs and also much more common with long term, high-dose steroids (such as when combatting autoimmune diseases or cancer). In cats, the side effects of steroids tend to be diabetes, heart disease, and kidney failure. Use of steroids is not a typical (or modern) route to take at all, due to the potentially serious side effects, but if it is helping, then great!

November is my birthday month. I don't care much about birthday wishes but instead try to get our community organised to pull a little money from each person that truly cares about me to get a trusted reliable 💜purple or 💙baby blue Baby-G watch. Really need a watch right now for me not to miss any Psychiatrist, Internal Medicine & Hematologist appointments in case my phone dies or malfunctions. I have Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP), Hypothyroidism, Bipolar Disorder Type I & Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from the pitbull Milo D'Adamo Stalcup's attack on my whole left arm on Thursday July 14, 2011 in Downer's Grove, Illinois, USA that made me addicted & dependant on Xanax real serious. I want to be prepared for all possibilities right now & the future. Please الله Dear God, don't let them doctors put me on Prednisolone or IVIG steroids again for ITP. The side effects were hell & I wouldn't wish them on my worst frenemies or enemies or even my attacker pitbull dog (if he was still alive). I'm thankful for the Text Scanner App that converted my pen writing with minimal mistakes to typed text that you took out of your precious busy lives reading right now. Like a dear close friend said, "Nik, don't relive & dwell on the past. Your health comes 1st". He also said, "Don't be shy to ask for help". So here & now, this is simply me dalam kain sembahyang pink Annisaa, my favorite kain sembahyang, hadiah IKHLAS Cik Puan Ayu Samad, Si Cantik Kelas I MRSM Pengkalan Chepa asking for help for health purposes. Thank you so much if you actually read all this. Love 💜💙 & God الله Bless

Hey doc! I have a completely non emergency q. What in meds for hemolytic anemia cause changes in personality? One of my dogs has it and when it manifested she died three times so I think it might be an oxygen-brain thing but I've always been curious if it was that or meds! I don't know what she was on other than blood transfusions. She got it from Frontline. She's fine now, just grumpy and not allowed around small kids. Qtax: came for fantasy bio, stayed for vet stuff!
Immune mediated haemolytic anemia (IMHA) is generally treated with immunosuppresive drugs and prednisolone. Neither of these drugs are thought to cause ‘personality changes’, prednisolone may cause some behavior changes.
Hunger and thirst are the classic side effects of prednisolone. Humans on this drug also report headaches, but this seems to be dose dependent. There are a handful of cases that link aggression with prednisolone, but I think this is secondary to its other effects and is extremely rare, if it happens at all.
Of course I don’t know what your dog was on, or is still on, and haven’t examined her, so this is just speculation.
