Almost on the verge of expulsion from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), will Prashant Bhushan-Yogendra Yadav duo join hands with any other political party or group to stay relevant in politics?
“We’re not going to think about such steps till we are in the party. Let’s see how things shape up,” AAP leader Prof Anand Kumar told Firstpost. Prof Kumar who acted as an interlocutor in the failed peace talk between the two warring camps of Kejriwal and Bhushan-Yadav duo, was ousted from the NE along with Yadav, Bhushan and Prof Ajit Jha on 28 March.
After ousting Yadav and Bhushan from the AAP’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) and National Executive (NE), Delhi Chief Minister and AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal ensured that Bhushan should be out of the National Disciplinary Committee as well. Even, the party’s internal Lokpal (Ombudsman) Admiral (retd) L Ramdas is now stripped of the post.
Gradually, the AAP is now moving ahead with its new (read restructured) ideology – ‘either you are an AAP MLA or nothing.’ One by one, the senior leaders or members, who are neither an AAP MLA nor an MP, have been compelled to exit in an unceremonious manner.
Will all these leaders join hands?
“One thing is clear that we are not going to sit idle. But yes, we are waiting for some time to see the final outcome of this dirty game and then the future course of action will be decided. Nothing has been decided whether we’ll join hands with any group or function independently,” said a member of the AAP’s Haryana unit.
In all possibility, Yadav, Bhushan and other disgruntled leaders, if finally expelled from AAP, may seek support from AVAM (AAP Volunteers’ Action Manch) – a splinter group of AAP. AVAM was the first casualty within AAP when a large chunk of volunteers led by Karan Singh was expelled from the party, who then formed an independent body. Though this volunteers’ group didn’t contest Delhi assembly election, AVAM exposed the issue of AAP accepting Rs 2 crore donations through four cheques, with fictitious donor’s identity.
“Both Prashantji and Yogendraji are intellectuals and ideologues in the party. They are tall leaders in AAP and don’t need our support to form a party. But a new party that wants to counter AAP will need the passion and drive of Arvind Kejriwal, along with dedicated workers. Here we can be of help as we’ve a strong team of committed volunteers, who originally laid the foundation of AAP,” said AVAM’s Karan Singh.
He added, “We’re in talks with Shanti Bhushanji and in days to come, we’ve planned a meeting of volunteers from across the country. AVAM is a platform where one can raise the voice of dissent. Today, AAP has become a party of ‘Yes man’ only and no member having self-respect can remain there, which has been proved time and again.”
If, Yogendra Yadav is expelled from the party, a large chunk of volunteers and members from AAP’s Haryana unit would either be expelled or will leave the party voluntarily along with their leader. In that case, the group might take the support of AVAM to form a strong base outside Haryana.
“We won’t join hands with any other political party, but the support of AVAM will be helpful for us as it’s a strong volunteer-based group. Moreover, both Yogendraji and Prashantji have been supportive to the cause of AVAM. But, everything is in a very nascent stage and the picture will be clear after some time,” another member of AAP’s Haryana unit said.
Bhushan in his letter to the NE dated 26 February, had given a clean chit to Karan Singh and had questioned why no action was taken against the person, who used fake SMSes to malign the latter and got him expelled from the party.
