SONG OF THE WEEK— 55 years ago, David Bowie released his first version of “Space Oddity” to celebrate the pending Apollo 11 moon landing. When I was a teenager, the song reached me in the deepest way, and it radically affected how I create music. In recording my cover of it I was blessed to work “a galaxy of talented personnel” (credits):

Some interpret “Space Oddity” as a dystopian story of futility and failure. I beg to differ. If you study the indicators in David Bowie’s music, he enjoyed a spiritual quest, a pursuit of God’s heart in the cosmos, inner and outer. There’s no sign that Bowie killed off Major Tom. Instead, Bowie reprised the Major Tom character as a conflicted man, “…Strung out on heaven’s high, making an all-time low,” seeking redemption from his foibles while expressing awe at the vast potential of creation. 

My goal in covering this song point towards the childlike faith/sci-fi themes of my next full length album (in the works), WE’RE GETTING CLOSER TO THE SUN.

Outside Inside is a 1983 album by The Tubes. It was the second album by the group to be released by Capitol Records. The album was produced by David Foster. The Tubes had their biggest radio hit with the single from this album, "She's a Beauty". This one is an “earlier release” on Capitol Records - ST-12260. (With the raised lettering, not the colored version) And, with the Martha Davis vocals. Early US copies of the album used embossed lettering for the eye chart on the front cover. This made the lettering hard to read. A later version of the cover had the eye chart along with artist and title information printed in red and blue. There are 2 different versions of the song "The Monkey Time". The original included guest vocals from Martha Davis of The Motels. Remote Control is the fifth album released by the Tubes. This was their first to be produced by Todd Rundgren (the other being 1985's Love Bomb). It is a concept album about a television-addicted idiot savant. Originally released in 1979, this is on A&M Records - SP-3242. Producer #toddrundgren suggested that the next work be a concept album. Lead singer #feewaybill sketched out a storyline based on his favorite book, Being There by Jerzy Kosinski. "It wasn't an original concept," he admits, but "I tried to make it more contemporary."
