What's better, TB awareness or ethically sourced coffee?
I am a very, very big fan of our coffee, but...
If everyone in wealthy countries understood that TB has killed FORTY MILLION PEOPLE since the year 2000, and if everyone in wealthy countries was angry and disgusted by the ongoing horror of underfunded research and treatment distribution, then TB death rates would decline by 60 or 70% over the next decade, simply because more resources would be devoted to finding new treatments and effectively distributing current ones. (We've seen this happen before! Look at HIV/AIDS death between 2005 and 2015! They fell by over 50%, not primarily because of new treatments but because of a dramatic expansion of existing treatments. Same thing could happen with TB.)
Like, we might lose 20 million people in the 2030s to TB, not because it's an impossible problem to solve but because we do not treat the problems of impoverished communities the way we treat the problems of rich communities.
So yeah, TB awareness (and activism! and fundraising! and advocacy for patients!) is vastly, vastly more important than the world's best coffee.

So I made a post about this article back when it came out in November 2023, but in light of us having a General Election in just over a month, it feels pertinent to bring it up again.
A tl/dr of it would be that within the past six years or so, two separate UN experts on poverty and human rights have assessed the UK and both have found that the poverty levels are horrific and unacceptable.
The first was a report done by Philip Alston in 2019; the second expert, Olivier De Schutter is the UN's current special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights and who visited the country at the end of 2023, and he accused the government of violating human rights in regards to poverty.
Both experts put the blame squarely on the Tories and their policies.
The first expert compared austerity to a Victorian era workhouse and accused the government of “systematic immiseration of a significant part of the British population”. At the time of that report, the government responded with denial and accusations of political bias.
The second expert rightfully pointed out that the government's refusal to engage with what Alston had reported had led to a rise in poverty, specifically that a fifth of UK residents live in poverty. He described the welfare state as “a leaking bucket” and again, he blamed the Tories and their policies.
This time, the government responded with fluffy words and empty promises that are not even in line with what De Schutter recommended.
I think it's important to bring this up again right now because in 37 days, we will be selecting what party will govern us for five more years.
In five years, the level of poverty in this country went from deeply concerning to breaching human rights laws.
Do you want to hand them the keys to number 10 for another five years? Do you want to see how much worse it can get?
Because I fucking don't and that's why I'm gonna (tactically) vote for Labour on July 4th. I fucking beg you to join me in voting the Tories out.

One of the things I hate about academia, which I hate about all creative enterprises, is that nobody ever tells you you didn't make it. Eventually you just have to decide that you've had enough and move on.

“poor people don’t deserve help if it’s their own fault they’re poor” did you know that so many people go to the ER with lightbulbs up their butts that there’s an established medical best practice for getting them out? did you know that every year people light their houses on fire deep-frying frozen turkeys and firefighters risk their lives to save them. Now let’s think about these facts together for a little bit and see if any important lessons about human nature present themselves.

yes give me the tatsumi rant
god okay so like we know Tatsumi is Christian it's a pretty important part of his character that he is like in his first feature scout story he mentions that he wanted to wear his father's vestments but was scolded for it because they are something that you have to be serious about like this is the most obvious thing anyone would know by looking at Tatsumi.
HOWEVERRRRRR since a lot of Western fans only really think of Christianity as like. Southern Baptist/Mormonism/Jehovah's Witnesses/Extreme Catholicism and like yeahhhhhh those sects are not Great but that's not all there is to Christianity as a religion. I went to an Episcopal service a few weeks ago and it was very fascinating how different it was to the Southern Baptist youth group I attended as a child. But Tatsumi does not follow any sort of American Protestant denomination because he doesn't fucking live here. He's a religious minority in his own country holy fucking shit.
Anyway there is ample evidence within even what has been officially translated that Tatsumi is a chill guy. In the current gacha story Ushimairi pt. 2 we get to see his first interactions with Koga right after moving in and he's literally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're chill!!! They're chill and they get along just fine. Koga asks about if Tatsumi thinks dogs are dirty because of his religion right after this and Tatsumi explains that it was because of the historical context and that stray dogs had rabies which is a completely valid reason to not want to like. Interact with dogs, but it's completely fine now because most dogs aren't walking around with rabies!!!
He's also stated that he believes he's going to hell before and that he's accepted that fact but he still believes in God anyway (and he has a conflict of faith later on where he debates if he even still believes or not). He would not be a bigot he wants to accept everyone as they are that's literally why he had the fucking revolution at Reimei over his belief in equality. Goes insane.
Anyway I haven't read most Tatsumi stories I stated in my last post I do not actually care about him all that much because he doesn't appeal to me as a character but mischaracterization on this level drives me up the wall like we are not reading the same stories we are not playing the same game clearly.

Choi Do-il really said "you're financially illiterate because you've never had the privilege to live beyond supermarket reward points or learn anything that wasn't absolutely required for your family's survival and NOT because you aren't intelligent enough". and that was very sexy of him.

“ today's god ”
- kissesonmymuse
scrapped knees kneel,
raving eyes speak
the parchment bleeds
with lies written in holy braile
the masses clasp their hands
while the bells ring
who, asks the child starving in bed,
who is god today ?
sometimes, it is the man crossing the street,
dropping a coin from his sleeves
once it was the girl who gave a slice of her bread
another was a mother who once patted her head
who is god, the child asks the pastor,
hoping to receive a reward from them
he is our saviour, a saint,
the holy man says,
thats not god, the child speaks up
as her stomach rumbles with empty hands
confused, he asks, child, who is god to you?
she smiles and points at the man himself
Holy one, give me a piece of your bread,
and you will be my god today.

This fandom loves to give Bloom and the Domino population draconic features but I've had a different thought. What if all Dominians can develop dragon features at will BUT most don't because it's considered in poor taste and extremely frowned upon?
The Great Dragon is sacred and any kind of imitation is considered sacrilegious. Sure, ordinary dragons exist but a) they can also be considered sacred creatures on Domino (we haven't seen anyone from Domino ride a dragon like the Specialists and Eraklyans do) that should not be imitated and b) the Great Dragon chose Domino as her resting place so she is the ancestor of all Dominians and while her essence is inside all of them (the royal family most notably), to want to recreate yourself in her image is considered too greedy as she is revered as a god and no one else should be allowed to be elevated to that kind of status.
