Poultry Stakeholders in Kenya Embrace Welfare Standards Transforming Egg and Meat Industry
Kenya’s poultry industry is a significant contributor to the country’s agricultural economy, supplying both domestic and regional markets with eggs and meat. However, despite the sector’s growth, many farmers have struggled to implement proper animal welfare practices due to weak enforcement of existing regulations. The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) introduced the KS 2945:2022 poultry welfare…

French farming unions are taking aim at the European Union’s free-trade agreements, which they say open the door to unfair competition from products arriving from overseas. At a time when the EU is urging farmers to adopt more sustainable – and sometimes more costly – agricultural practices, unions say these trade deals are making it hard for them to stay solvent.
French farmers say that one of their biggest fears is that Chilean apples, Brazilian grains and Canadian beef will flood the European market, thereby undermining their livelihoods. France’s farmers continued to demonstrate on the country’s motorways on Wednesday, protesting against rising costs, over-regulation and free-trade agreements –partnerships between the EU and exporting nations that the farming unions say leads to unfair competition.
The EU has signed several free-trade agreements in recent years, all with the objective of facilitating the movement of goods and services. But farmers say the deals bring with them insurmountable challenges.
"These agreements aim to reduce customs duties, with maximum quotas for certain agricultural products and non-tariff barriers," said Elvire Fabry, senior researcher at the Jacques Delors Institute, a French think-tank dedicated to European affairs. "They also have an increasingly broad regulatory scope to promote European standards for investment, protection of intellectual property, geographical indications and sustainable development standards."
South American trade deal in the crosshairs
Some non-EU countries – such as Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland – maintain comprehensive free-trade agreements with the EU because they are part of the European Economic Area. This allows them to benefit from the free movement of goods, services, capital and people.
Other nations farther afield have signed more variable agreements with the EU, including Canada, Japan, Mexico, Vietnam and Ukraine. The EU also recently signed an accord with Kenya and a deal with New Zealand that will come into force this year; negotiations are also under way with India and Australia.
However, a draft agreement between the EU and the South American trade bloc Mercosur is creating the most concern. Under discussion since the 1990s, this trade partnership between Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay would create the world's largest free-trade area, a market encompassing 780 million people.
French farmers are particularly concerned about the deal’s possible effect on agriculture. The most recent version of the text introduces quotas for Mercosur countries to export 99,000 tonnes of beef, 100,000 tonnes of poultry and 180,000 tonnes of sugar per year, with little or no customs duties imposed. In exchange, duties would also be lowered on exports from the EU on many “protected designation of origin” (PDO) products.
At a time when the EU is urging farmers to adopt more sustainable agricultural practices, French unions say these agreements would open the door to massive imports – at more competitive prices – of products that do not meet the same environmental standards as those originating in Europe. French farmers are calling out what they say is unfair competition from farmers in South America who can grow GMO crops and use growth-promoting antibiotics on livestock, which is banned in the EU.
Trade unions from various sectors went into action after the European Commission informed them on January 24 that negotiations with Mercosur could be concluded "before the end of this mandate", i.e., before the European Parliament elections in June.
The FNSEA, France’s biggest farming union, immediately called for a "clear rejection of free-trade agreements" while the pro-environmental farming group Confédération Paysanne (Farmers' Confederation) called for an "immediate end to negotiations" on this type of agreement.
A mixed record
"In reality, the impact of these free-trade agreements varies from sector to sector," said Fabry. "Negotiations prior to agreements aim to calibrate the opening up of trade to limit the negative impact on the most exposed sectors. And, at the same time, these sectors can benefit from other agreements. In the end, it's a question of finding an overall balance."
This disparity is glaringly obvious in the agricultural sector. "The wine and spirits industry as well as the dairy industry stand to gain more than livestock farmers, for example," said Fabry. These sectors are the main beneficiaries of free-trade agreements, according to a 2023 report by the French National Assembly.
"The existence of trade agreements that allow customs duty differentials to be eliminated is an 'over-determining factor' in the competitiveness of French wines," wrote FranceAgriMer, a national establishment for agriculture and maritime products under the authority of the French ministry of agriculture in a 2021 report. The majority of free-trade agreements lower or abolish customs duties to allow the export of many PDO products, a category to which many wines belong.
However, the impact on meat is less clear-cut. While FranceAgriMer says the balance between imports and exports appears to be in the EU's favour for pork, poultry exports seem to be declining as a result of the agreements. Hence the fears over the planned treaty with New Zealand, which provides for 36,000 tonnes of mutton to be imported into the EU, equivalent to 45% of French production in 2022. France,however, still has a large surplus of grains except for soya.
‘A bargaining chip’
Beyond the impact on agriculture, "this debate on free-trade agreements must take into account other issues", said Fabry. "We are in a situation where the EU is seeking to secure its supplies and in particular its supplies of strategic minerals. Brazil's lithium, cobalt, graphite and other resource reserves should not be overlooked."
The agreement with Chile should enable strategic minerals to be exported in exchange for agricultural products. Germany strongly supports the agreement with Mercosur, as it sees it as an outlet for its industrial sectors, according to Fabry.
"In virtually all free-trade agreements, agriculture is always used as a bargaining chip in exchange for selling cars or Airbus planes," Véronique Marchesseau, general-secretary of the Confédération Paysanne, told AFP.
Michèle Boudoin, president of the French National Sheep Federation, told AFP that the agreement with New Zealand will "destabilise the lamb market in France".
"We know that Germany needs to export its cars, that France needs to sell its wheat, and we're told that we need an ally in the Pacific tocounter China and Russia. But if that is the case, then we need help to be able to produce top-of-the-line lamb, for example," she said.
Finally, "there is a question of influence", said Fabry. "These agreements also remain a way for the EU to promote its environmental standards to lead its partners along the path of ecological transition, even if this has to be negotiated," said Fabry.
Marc Fesneau, the French minister of agriculture, made the same argument. "In most cases, the agreements have been beneficial, including to French agriculture," Fesneau wrote on X last week, adding: "They will be even more so if we ensure that our standards are respected."
Mercosur negotiations suspended?
As the farmers’ promised “siege” of Paris and other major locations across France continues, the French government has been trying to reassure agricultural workers about Mercosur, even though President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva relaunched negotiations in December. "France is clearly opposed to the signing of the Mercosur treaty," Prime Minister Gabriel Attal acknowledged last week.
The Élysée Palace even said on Monday evening that EU negotiations with the South American bloc had been suspended because of France's opposition to the treaty. The conditions are "not ripe" for concluding the negotiations, said Eric Mamer, spokesman for the European Commission. "However, discussions are ongoing."
Before being adopted, the agreement would have to be passed unanimously by the European Parliament, then ratified individually by the 27 EU member states.

The plight of Kenya's jobless youth: A story of hope and despair.
By Emmanuel Okiru, 17 November 2023
Kenya is facing a serious challenge of youth unemployment, which affects millions of young people who are either out of work or stuck in low-quality and informal jobs. According to the World Bank, the youth unemployment rate in Kenya was 13.35 percent in 2022, among the highest in the world. The situation is worse in urban areas, where the youth unemployment rate was 19.1 percent in 2009, the latest year for which data is available.
The causes of youth unemployment are complex and multifaceted, ranging from a slow-growing economy, a mismatch between the skills of the labor force and the demands of the market, a lack of access to capital and credit, and a high population growth rate that outstrips the creation of new jobs. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has exaggerated the problem, as many businesses have closed down or reduced their operations, leading to massive layoffs and income losses.
However, despite all these, there are also stories of hope and resilience among the Kenyan youth who are trying to overcome the barriers and create opportunities for themselves and others. Some of them have benefited from various initiatives and programs that aim to provide them with skills, training, mentorship and funding to start and grow their own businesses or find decent employment.
One such program is the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF), which was established by the government in 2006 to support youth entrepreneurship and innovation. The fund offers loans, grants and business development services to youth groups and individuals who have viable business ideas or existing enterprises. According to the fund's website, over 12 billion Kenyan shillings has been disbursed to more than 1.4 million youth since its inception.
One of the beneficiaries of the YEDF is Mary Wanjiku, a 24-year-old who runs a poultry farm in Kiambu County. She started her business in 2019 with 100 chicks, after receiving a loan of 50,000 shillings from the fund. She has since expanded her farm to 500 birds and sells eggs and chicken to local hotels and supermarkets. She has also employed two other young people to help her with the daily operations.
"I am very grateful to the YEDF for giving me this opportunity to start and grow my business. It has changed my life and given me a sense of purpose and dignity. I am able to support myself and my family, and also create jobs for other youth in my community," this is what she had to say in an interview with the Kenyan disclosure team.
This is just an example of how some Kenyan youth are coping with the challenge of unemployment and how some programs are trying to address it. However, there is still a lot that needs to be done to create more and better opportunities for the millions of young people who are still struggling to find their place in the society and the economy.

Lupine Publishers|Molecular detection of aflatoxin producing Aspergillus species isolates in some chicken meat cuts in Gharbiya governorate, Egypt
Tumblr media
Abstract
Contamination with fungi and their toxins is considered one of the most dangerous hidden pollutants that threaten the health of the consumer. The presence of mycotoxins in various foods has been recorded, despite their apparent safety for human consumption. Therefore, the current study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of Aspergillus species by culture method; and aflatoxinproducing genes molecularly in total of 75 random samples of chicken cuts represented by wing, breast and thigh (25 of each) that were collected from various groceries and poultries shops located at Gharbiya governorate, Egypt. Results of culture and isolation techniques revealed detection of Aspergillus sp. in 36, 48 and 44% of the examined wing, breast and thigh samples, respectively. Moreover, microbiological identification of the isolated strains showed presence of A. niger, A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. terreus and A. parasiticus in 16, 13.3, 10.6, 1.3 and 1.3% of the total population of the examined samples. Molecular detection of some aflatoxin production regulating genes (OmtA, Nor1 and Ver1) in ten Aspergillus sp. isolates revealed their detection in 8/10 (80%), 8/10 (80%) and 7/10 (70%) represented by positive bands at molecular weight of 1024, 400 and 537 bp, respectively. Referring to the recorded results, chicken cuts may possess a great silent hazard to the human being under improper good manufacturing practices and inadequate hygienic conditions during handling and storage.
Introduction
Chicken meat and meat products production in developing countries plays an essential role in supporting food security and poultry meat demands Wong et al. [1]. Contamination of meat products with molds can be occur during different preparation stages during slaughtering under bad hygienic conditions using contaminated water or by adding contaminated spices with mold spores or during packing, handling, transportation and storage Khalalfalla et al. [2]. Contamination of meat with Aspergillus species, especially Flavi section, is one of the most hazardous microbial contamination as the majority of Aspergillus species are able to aflatoxins production that can cause diseases associated with aflatoxin poisoning and carcinogenic effects Leggieri et al. [3]. Acute aflatoxin poisoning may lead to death as was recorded in Kenya in 2004 Probst et al. [4], while chronic poisoning may lead to various recorded mutagens and cancers Benkerroum [5]. Aspergillus sp. was classified into two groups depending on their toxigenic impacts on food and human health; 1st group includes the aflatoxigenic species such as A. flavus and A. parasiticus, while the 2nd group contains the non-aflatoxin-producing species such as A. tamarii and A. oryzae Frisvad et al. [6]. Molecular analyses have been used to confirm aflatoxin productivity of Aspergillus species isolates. omtA, nor1 and ver1 genes are from the commonly used genes encoded aflP, aflD and aflM toxins detection in food items Sohrabi and Taghizadeh [7] yield an accurate, rapid and reliable records of toxigenic aspergillus species especially in food chain Sadhasivam et al. [8]. Therefore, the main target of the current study was to investigate the presence of toxigenic aspergillus species in some chicken meat cuts collected from Gharbiya Governorate markets, Egypt.
Material and Methods
Collection of samples : A total of seventy-five random samples of raw chilled chicken wing, chicken thigh, chicken breast (25 of each) was collected from different local poultries shops and different supermarkets at Gharbia governorate, Egypt. Samples were taken aseptically in polyethylene bags and were transferred to the laboratory in ice box for mycological examination. Preparation of samples (ISO [9]): Twenty-five grams from each sample were carefully and aseptically homogenized in blinder after mixing with 225 ml of sterile peptone water 0.1% to form a dilution of 1:10, from which tenth fold serial dilutions were prepared.
Determination of Aspergillus species
Culture of the prepared samples was performed according to ISO [10], where 0.1ml of the previously prepared serial dilutions was spreaded by mean of sterile L-shape glass rod over two Petridishes contained solidified Dichloran Rose Bengal agar with chloramphenicol (DRBC) then were incubated at upright position at 25Oc for 5 -7 days. Identification of isolated strains was performed according to Pitt and Hocking [11] macroscopically and microscopically as recorded in Table 1. Molecular detection of some aflatoxin producing genes of some isolated Aspergillus strains by cPCR
Oligonucleotide primers used in cPCR
Three pairs of omtA, nor1 and ver1 primers were prepared and collected from Metabion (Germany). Their special sequence and amplify certain products as were be displayed in Table 2.
Mycological DNA was extracted following QIAamp DNeasy Plant Mini kit Catalogue no. 69104. Preparation of master mix and thermal profile was adapted according to the manufacturer instructions (Emerald Amp GT PCR mastermix (Takara) Code No. RR310A).
Results
As recorded in Table 3, Aspergillus sp. was detected in 32(42.6%) of the total examined samples. In detail, breast samples recorded the highest contamination level (48%); followed by thigh and wing samples, respectively. Regarding with the genus identification, A. niger had the highest detection levels (16%) in the examined samples (Table 4). Referring to the obtained results of molecular detection of some aflatoxin producing genes as recorded in (Table 5) and (Figures 1-3); omtA, nor1 and ver1 genes were detected in 8/10 (80%), 8/10 (80%) and 7/10 (70%) of the examined A. flavus isolates, respectively. presence of these genes indicated the producibility of the examined strain for aflatoxins P, D and M, respectively.
Discussion
Chicken meat and meat products comply an important source of human protein supplement all over the world because they provide good source of digestible protein, low cholesterol fat, essential amino acids, minerals, and different types of vitamins and minerals. In Egypt, as well as human population increasing, demand of animal proteins also is increasing represents a serious challenge in which poultry industry plays an essential role in filling nutrition gap as a rapid and more economic source of proteins (Shaltout et al. [12]). Mold contamination of meat and meat products have been considered a serious source of food spoilage resulting in different organoleptic changes in flavor, color, texture, odor referred mainly to the fungal deterioration especially in poor developing countries due to lack of hygienic measures during processing and handling (Lorenzo et al. [7]). Presence of mold in foods may be referred to the rapid, easy disperse and wide spread of the fungal spores which are abundant in the environment introducing food chain through dust, water, workers and equipment. Their presence in food samples is a serious public health concern as these fungi may be associated with the production of mycotoxins (Benedict et al. [13]). Aspergillus species represents an important mycotic infection in public health concern as a human pathogen and as toxin-producing food contaminant. It releases a lot of spores which found in air, water, soil, plant debris, manure and animal feed. As fungal spore’s growing, it secretes digestive enzyme and mycotoxins leading to food spoilage and human mycotoxicosis (Richardson and Rautemaa-Richardson [14]). Referring to the recorded results in Table 3, Aspergillus sp. was prominently detected in breast samples other than wings and thighs samples, which came in agree with the previously recorded results of Darwish et al. [15] and Shaltout et al. [16] who found that the examined breast samples were more contaminated with fungal infection than wing and thigh samples. While the current prevalence of aspergillus species in the examined samples came lower than those recorded by Hassan [17] who found Aspergillus sp. in all the examined samples (100%) collected from Gharbiya governorate, Egypt. Moreover, Abuzaid et al. [18] also detected A. flavus and A. niger in 40 and 80% of the examined sausage samples of chicken origin, respectively. Referring to the obtained results of the microbiological identification of Aspergillus sp. isolates as recorded in Table 4, they came in agree with the previously reported results by Darwish et al. [15] who found that A. niger was the predominant detected strain, followed by A. flavus and A. parasiticus in the examined samples of chicken cuts collected from Zagazig city, Egypt. Some mold species can cause respiratory infections representing a significant risk for individual with severely weakened immune system (OSHA [19]). Presence of mold in high incidence indicate bad hygienic measures adopted during handling, preparation and processing El Abbasy [20]. Mycotoxins have been defined as naturally occurring secondary fungal metabolites produced in meat and meat products by direct growth of toxigenic molds such as Aspergillus species which produce Aflatoxins and Ochratoxins which threat public health due to their carcinogenic, hepatotoxic, nephrotoxic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects in human and animals Agriopoulou et al. [21]. Aflatoxins are produced by a polyketide pathway that pass through about twenty-seven enzymatic reactions which have been regulated by sets of genes including nor-1, ver-1 and omtA have been shown to be involved in this process. aflD (nor-1) encodes a norsolorinic acid ketoreductase needed for the conversion of the 10-keto group of Norsolorinic Acid (NOR) to the 10-hydroxyl group of Versicolorin A (VERA) Zhou and Linz [22]. aflM (ver-1), predicted to encode a ketoreductase, is involved in the conversion of VERA into Sterigmatocystin (ST) Henry and Townsend [23]; aflP (omtA) codes for O-methyltransferase, which is one of the main genes responsible for transforming ST into O-methylsterigmatocystin (OMST) that is the precursor for aflatoxin production Yabe et al. [24]. Many other previous studies recorded detection of these genes in their Aspergillus isolates of food origin by various PCR techniques; Manonmani et al. [25], Rodrigues et al. [26], and Hassan et al. [27], who conducted several studies investigating the aflatoxigenicity of Aspergillus sp., could detect different genes in their Aspergillus isolates [28,29].
Conclusion
It could be concluded that, breast samples revealed the highest contamination levels with Aspergillus sp.; in addition, A. niger was the prominently detected strain. PCR technique is a unique diagnostic tool for detection and identification of aflatoxigenic Aspergillus strains especially if the field of food safety. So, application of strict hygienic measures, proper use of water supply and food additives from good sources is recommended.

Anti-Open Grazing Law: Herders Want 750,000 Square Metres Of Land In Delta, Over my dead body it will not happen.-- Gov Okowa
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/anti-open-grazing-law-herders-want-750000-square-metres-of-land-in-delta-over-my-dead-body-it-will-not-happen-gov-okowa/
Anti-Open Grazing Law: Herders Want 750,000 Square Metres Of Land In Delta, Over my dead body it will not happen.-- Gov Okowa
Tumblr media
Following move to boycott open eating of cows in Delta State, the state part of Cattle Dealers Association yesterday requested somewhere around 30,000 square meters of land in every one of the 25 neighborhood government spaces of the state, totalling 750,000 square meters.
The steers sellers need the terrains assigned for animals reproducing and showcases across the state. However, the state government in a quick response, said lands for farming in the state are available to be purchased and encouraged the sellers to purchase for their business.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The improvement went ahead a day youth pioneers in the South East, under the aegis of Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, requested the Department from State Services, DSS, to create the dangerous herders who killed four ranchers and harmed six others in an assault on the agrarian local area of Opanda at Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State on Monday.
The adolescents likewise asked the South-South lead representatives to implement the prohibition on open touching to keep away from individuals accepting them as unserious people.
This is even as Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, yesterday, communicated shock over the assault by speculated executioner herders on Opando in Enugu State.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Dairy cattle brokers request 750,000 sqr meters of land
The Cattle Traders Association, which made the interest during a formal conference on a bill to boycott open eating in the state named, “Bill for a Law to accommodate the Regulation of Livestock Breeding, Rearing and Marketing and to Prohibit Open Grazing and related issue in Delta State,” said the arrangement of terrains by the state government will help them stop open nibbling.
At the conference coordinated by the Delta State House of Assembly’s joint advisory group on extraordinary bills and that of agribusiness and normal assets, the relationship of dairy cattle vendors in a notice endorsed by the director, Alhaji Musa Shuwa, deplored that the 5,000 square meters assigned as munching region contained in the draft bill were terribly deficient.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Shuwa clarified that as of now, the affiliation kept up with animals (dairy cattle) markets in seven towns in the state, adding that the littlest was arranged on a package of land estimating around 4,500 square meters, while the greatest was around 7,000 square meters.
He said: “This is just for the business sectors. Likewise, each market takes conveyance of at the very least 800 cows each week. Our individuals scarcely sell all their cows at the market, henceforth the need to take care of the steers by munching.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“With the intendment of the draft of this bill being to boycott open eating, our deferential view to include dairy cattle inside encased eating (to farm) region would imply that an enormous space of land is required for this reason.
“While we recognize that the 5,000 square meters referenced in Section 8 (2a) is just in the base, it is our unassuming perspective that even in the base, 5,000 square meters of land may not be the best beginning stage.
“We, accordingly, prescribe that to essentially fulfill having an abattoir, veterinary center, domesticated animals market, managerial office and security post as given in Section 2 (b) to (g), Section 2 (a) ought to give that the assigned region will contain at least 30,000 square meters of land.”
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Administrator of the joint council, Mrs. Pat Ajudua, had prior at the formal proceeding, clarified that the formal proceeding was to accumulate the contributions of people in general, especially significant partners in the creation of the proposed law.
Anyone who needs to farm should purchase land — Delta Govt
Notwithstanding, responding to the steers sellers’ interest, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said: “All things considered, they are conversing with the legislators yet the truth of the matter is that we have made unmistakably anyone who needs to do farming should purchase land and afterward start his farm.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“Assuming I need to do poultry business, I get a spot, pay for it and start my poultry ranch. For the individuals who are doing piggery, they get a spot and start the piggery. Assuming you need to do dairy cattle business, get your farm yet assuming the Federal Government needs to help individuals to get a farm, no issue similarly as they are doing FADAMA for certain developments.
“In the event that the Federal Government additionally needs to have farming helped program, there isn’t anything amiss with it.
“The matter of creature farming and animal raising is likewise the matter of our kin, if they are Fulani. In any case, for anyone to imagine that the public authority has that sort of land to give isn’t accurate. The neighborhood government in our framework doesn’t claim land. The grounds have a place with people and families.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“On the off chance that the lone land I have is only 1,000 square meters, will the neighborhood government request that I give it away? What’s more, maybe, that is the lone land I need to one or the other form or homestead. Will the nearby government advise me, this land we are taking it from you, for me to do what from there on? That is the reason individuals should be sensible in making this sort of interest.”
. S’East young people charge DSS to create dangerous herders at Enugu people group
In a comparative turn of events, adolescents who claimed that four people were killed during the assault on Nimbo people group in Enugu State, said somewhere around 10 others were all the while missing, while six supported different levels of wounds.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
They additionally charged South East lead representatives to uphold the prohibition on open munching of steers in the area, as articulated by Southern lead representatives in their gathering in Asaba, Delta State, around two months prior.
In an articulation endorsed by the President-General, and Secretary-General of Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, Goodluck Ibem, and Comrade Kanice Igwe, the adolescents approached Nimbo, and other South-East young people to assemble themselves and watchman their networks against any type of attack by herders.
While approaching the worldwide local area to go to the guide of Christians and southern Nigerians who they guaranteed had been purportedly set apart for elimination, the gathering approached Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State to shape a solid security outfit to watch line networks against interruption by herders.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The assertion read: “The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, the peak socio-political youth association in the South-East geo-political zone, censures in most grounded terms the assault by deadly herders/fear mongers that prompted the demise of four people and missing of 10 at Opanda in Nimbo people group, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu state.
“This is the second time in 2021 that dangerous psychological oppressors marching as herders are assaulting this very local area for not permitting the lethal fear mongers to take care of their cows in their ranch settlements.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“The Department of State Services, DSS that is excellent in assaulting the homes of activists and killing their allies should move right into it and capture those executioner herders and carry them to court to deal with indictments for homicide and different offenses submitted against humankind.
“The law, they say isn’t a respecter of people. Is the law presently regarding murde-rous herders fear mongers that up till this second, we are yet to know about the capture of those executioners?
”The DSS that has the ability to go right to Kenya and steal Nnamdi Kanu, and who moved from Abuja to Ibadan to assault the home of Sunday Adeyemi (otherwise known as Sunday Igboho) ought to likewise move promptly to catch the deadly herders that killed individuals of Nimbo people group on Monday, July 26, 2021, by 2 am.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“We approach the great individuals of Nimbo people group and different networks in the South East international zone to promptly prepare their adolescents and watchman their networks to keep away from a rehash of what simply occurred at Nimbo people group.
“The legislative head of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, ought to quickly shape a solid and dynamic native security outfit to monitor bordertowns of Enugu State to deflect another intrusion of the state.
“The legislative leaders of Southern Nigeria should stamp their feet on the ground and authorize the restriction on open touching, in any case no one will treat them in a serious way later on.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“What occurred at Nimbo people group happened on the grounds that the head of Miyetti Allah straightforwardly taught his individuals to dismiss the goal of Southern state lead representatives restricting open touching.
”The executioner herders/fear based oppressors ought to be captured for the killings at Nimbo people group in Enugu State. This audacious frenzy of killing blameless Nigerians for rejecting dairy cattle possessed by herders to benefit from ranchers’ yields should stop forthwith.
We, subsequently, approach the global local area to go to the guide of Christians and Southern Nigerians who have been set apart for killing without the central government effectively stop the slaughter of guiltless ranchers and Christians.”
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Ohanaeze young people express concern, request that tactical fish out culprits.
Additionally responding to the killings at Nimbo yesterday, Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, in an articulation by its President-General, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike and the Secretary-General, Comrade Obinna Achuonye, expressed that the assault was unsuitable.
The Igbo bunch additionally expressed it was presently an ideal opportunity for the military to demonstrate its fortitude and capture the culprits.
The assertion read: “We woke up once more to another blow out of killings by raiding herders. This isn’t the first run through Uzo-Uwani is encountering this sort of bloodletting, as we have not forgotten in a rush how Nimbo in the space went under a comparative lethal assault, leaving scores dead.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“Presently, we have a rehash of such abhorrent and obnoxious killings. We are in profound torment, we are in distress over this lamentable report.
“This is the sort of circumstance that required IPOB’s arrangement of Eastern Security Network, ESN, as they observed weakly throughout the long term and our kin were being butchered.”
While thumping security offices for doing minimal notwithstanding the careless killings by speculated executioner herders, the adolescent gathering said: “It is very lamentable that Nigeria security agence

Norwich Union House, the skycrapper in CBD owned by ordinary chama members
Tumblr media
At the corner of Kimathi Street in Nairobi, right opposite the Hilton Hotel stands a nine-storey building. The skyscraper forms one of the landmarks of the central business district.
To tenants, the Norwich Union House is a place where they get their plate of chips from a fast food joint on the ground floor. Better still, where they browse the internet from the cybercafés on the top floors.
But to members of the Norwich Union Properties Ltd (NUP), the multi-million-shilling structure is a dream borne of group effort –or what Kenyans popularly know as chama.
NUP’s success story goes back to 1996, when 33 visionary individuals came together to form Critical Mass Growth group (CMG). At the time, the outfit was an investment group like any other. They did what every small group does. Met once a week to deliberate on different development ideas and summed up discussions with weekly contributions of Sh10,000.
A year on, members realised that the contributions were sizeable. This called for a decision on what to do with the money that they were banking every week. It is at this time that the group decided to transform the chama into a company. In 1997, it was incorporated just after the group landed an investment opportunity which gave it the name – Norwich Union.
“We had the chance of purchasing Norwich Union House and since one of the areas we wanted to venture in was real estate, we made it our trademark,” says Michael Maina, general manager of NUP.
NUP stayed true to its vision and today, they own three more properties worth Sh1.2 billion in Nairobi – Libra House on Mombasa Road, Ratna Apartments in Lavington and Southern Credit House in the CBD.
NUP has since become a public company which is selling a share at Sh10 with a minimum limit of 1,000 shares. They will be listing at the NSE soon, says Maina.
The original chama – CMG Ltd also runs CMG investment Ltd, an alternative investment company established in 1998. However, members no longer make contributions. Instead, they conduct rights issues. The group membership now stands at 78, but this group remains private and only NUP is open to the public who are allowed to buy shares from the company.
The story of growing investments from group synergy is not limited to CMG. Rather it is an approach used by one in every three Kenyans to generate wealth, according to statistics from the Kenya Association of Investment groups.
    According to Josephine Njuguna, marketing and product development officer at Bank of Africa (BOA), chamas, or investing as a group, help people realise their goals quicker as opposed to going it alone.
BOA is among financial institutions with tailor-made products for such groups. The bank pioneered the service three years ago.
“The product was developed when its innovators recognised the need to offer assistance to chamas,” said Ms Njuguna. The support is to help them achieve their investment dreams.
BOA today takes pride in having 4,000 active chama accounts worth billions of shillings.  The bank offers investment groups value additions which include monthly experts’ advice clinics and easy credit facilities.
“Our goal is to make sure they (groups) interact with like-minded people and make progress in their individual lives,” added Ms Njuguna.
Other financial institutions that are seeing the huge financial potential in such groups are Rafiki DTM, an affiliate of Chase Bank, KCB, Barclays Bank and Co-operative Bank.
Banks are more cognisant of the fact that chamas have grown beyond their informality – where groups meet at homes and paid money into informal revolving funds; to bankable groups with large sums of money at their disposal.
Manyatta Fresh Self-Help Group from Kisumu is an example of a small group that has transitioned from a women’s ‘merry-go-round group’ where women give money to one or two members for household purchases to a profitable formal cluster.
Well aware of the poverty around them, the women from Manyatta slums made up their minds to change their destiny. In a group of 12, they made weekly contributions of Sh100 each which they later increased to Sh200 in order to grow capital.
“After a while, we took part of our savings and put it in a poultry business and that boosted our bank savings to Sh75,000,” says Akinyi Owiti, the group’s chairlady.
    The women topped up the savings with a Sh50,000 loan from Women Enterprise for agribusiness and started quail farming.
After one and half years, they saw another opportunity in real estate. Ms Owiti donated her idle plot for the construction of rental houses. They also bought additional land on which they are planning to build more houses. Their other assets include two cybercafés and a tailoring business. The group asset today stands at about Sh1 million.
Manyatta Fresh recently began lending members money after years of strict saving.
“We had to first grow in asset before we could enjoy from our toil,” says Ms Owiti. Another flourishing investor, Lee Karuri, holds the same opinion and advises groups to reinvest any gains instead of draining the accounts.
“Keep ploughing back profits to avoid depleting the funds you have accrued until you can comfortably afford to give out dividends to members,” advises Karuri. It’s only recently that members of his investment group – Home Afrika received dividends. Their take has always been to reinvest whatever profits they made.
Mr Karuri is the founder Home Afrika, a real estate investment group with a PanAfrican agenda of housing millions of Africans. Karuri and his friends floated the idea of contributing for an ambitious investment opportunity to the public.
“When we started, a share was going for Sh2 million with a limit of five shares per member. Those interested either purchased as a group, family or individual,” said Mr Karuri in an interview with Business Daily newspaper.
Their initial target was 49 investors, but more people showed interest. Instead of raising Sh200 million, they got Sh350 million from 128 investors.
Home Afrika later formalised operations in 2009.  Five years later, they took a leap, becoming the first fully-fledged real estate company to be listed at the NSE. Today, the company’s worth is Sh9 billion based on market capitalisation.
Migaa Golf and Country Club, an exclusive gated community with an 18-hole golf course, Kikwetu in Machakos, Lakeview in Kisumu and Longonot Gate, a holiday home at the foothills of Mt Longonot are  some of its assets. According to Mr Karuri, sound leadership, clear vision, integrity and trust are the ingredients of the group’s success.
“Wherever there is focused leadership, there is growth,” he said.
He also advises groups to be professional and shun the friendship approach that first got them together.
“Remove informality and run the group formally as a company,” Mr Karuri added. Incorporating the group into a company, soliciting the services of experts and drafting a strategy are other important elements for a successful outfit.

Incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo declared winner of Ghanaian elections
On Wednesday, December 9, Ghana’s incumbent president Nana Akufo-Addo won a second term in office, winning 51.59 percent of the vote in general elections that took place on Monday. Opposition leader and former president, John Mahama, who has twice before lost to Akufo-Addo, won 47.36 percent of the vote. Votes were also cast for the country’s 275 parliamentary seats; results have not yet been announced but are expected to be very close. Overall, more than 13 million votes were cast, with a voter turnout rate of over 75 percent. Mahama has not yet conceded defeat and has rejected the electoral results, citing alleged irregularities and accusing Akufo-Addo of harnessing the military in an attempt to sway the outcome. Election observers, however, stated that the polling was generally free and fair; a representative from Ghana’s independent and nonpartisan Coalition of Domestic Election Observers stated that “the results declared by the electoral commission reflect how Ghanaians voted in the presidential election polls.” Although the election was generally peaceful—a regular occurrence for Ghana’s stable democracy—five people were reported to have been killed in election violence, and the Ghanaian Police Service recorded 60 incidents during Monday’s vote, 21 of which it said were “true cases of electoral violence.”
American troops ordered to leave Somalia; US recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara
Late last week, the United States announced it would be pulling the majority of its 700 troops from Somalia, stating that the al-Shabaab threat, while present, is “contained.” The recent announcement follows similar U.S. military drawdowns in Afghanistan and Iraq. Notably, the U.S. will not be leaving the country entirely: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley stated that the continued presence would be “a relatively small footprint, relatively low cost in terms of number of personnel and in terms of money” as the U.S. will still be working to fully eliminate the threat of extremist groups like al-Shabaab. The head of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Stephen Townsend, emphasized on Thursday that “U.S. forces will remain in the region and our tasks and commitment to partners remain unchanged.” Somali leaders have referred to the drawdown as “extremely regrettable” given the support the U.S. has provided for training and operational effectiveness in recent years. Indeed, on Thursday, December 10, the U.S. launched two airstrikes in which eight al-Shabaab fighters were killed. Also on Thursday, the U.S. officially recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara after 40 years of official neutrality as part of a wider U.S.-brokered deal between Israel and Morocco. As part of that deal, Morocco became the fourth Arab-majority country in recent months to agree to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel.  While many celebrated the overall agreement, the Western Sahara announcement was met with criticism from members of U.S. President Donald Trump’s own party, as Republican Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee James M. Inhofe stated, “He could have made this deal without trading away the rights of this voiceless people.” The decadeslong ceasefire between Morocco and Western Sahara ended in early November with a military incursion from Morocco into the United Nations-controlled buffer zone in response to what Morocco called “provocations” by the Western Saharan pro-independence group Polisario Front. The Polisario Front called the U.S. decision “a flagrant violation” of the United Nations charter and international law and said that the “Sahrawi people will continue their legitimate struggle by all means to defend their sovereignty.”
East Africa trade update
On December 3, the East African Community (EAC) submitted its tariff offer for trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to the African Union Commission, two days ahead of the deadline. The EAC’s submission of their tariff offer means that every Customs Union and Single Customs Territory has now submitted a tariff offer for trade under the AfCFTA, with the Economic Community of West African States also submitting their offer on December 2. Forty countries are now prepared to participate in the AfCFTA on January 1, 2021 when trading under the agreement is scheduled to begin. East African trade has, however, faced recent challenges, with the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA)—an umbrella group of Ugandan industrialists and manufacturers—accusing Kenya of unfairly blocking Ugandan products, including milk, sugar, and poultry and beef products, from its market. Kenya has not yet responded to the accusations that Kenya has baselessly claimed that Ugandan products, including those with valid certificates of origin, are counterfeit. The UMA has also expressed frustration with the Ugandan government’s “inability to decisively resolve the unfair trade practices subjected to Uganda by Kenya.” If the dispute is not resolved, the UMA has threatened to bar Kenyan goods from entering Uganda and seek redress at the East African Court of Justice.

Along with the food and healthcare industry, the feed industry is facing problems due to the non-working manufacturing industry. The demand for feed for livestock is high as the maintenance of livestock is an important aspect for breeders. This has increased the reliability on plain feed for animals without the addition of the nutritive value of the feed resulting in a loss in the business. The livestock industry has affected due to pandemic situations which in turn affected the feed additive industry as a result of reduced demand from breeders. Moreover, the poultry industry was battling with the rumors of the spread of COVID-19 through consumption of meat which impacted the market for poultry that affected the feed market in turn hampering the demand for feed additives. However, with the awareness and true information floating on various websites is expected to drive this market globally.
