Like I was saying earlier: mRNA vaccines have poor effect on long term immune memory, but keeping up to date with your shots improves its general efficacy.
By Mary Van Beusekom, MS
A team led by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) researchers studying Medicare claims data during the early Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant months conclude that a third dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine provides significant protection against hospitalization and death compared with two doses but wanes substantially after 4 months.
The research, published today in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, was based on data from 8.1 million community-dwelling Medicare Fee-for-Service beneficiaries ages 65 years and older who received a second or third dose of the Moderna or Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine from December 2021 to March 2022. Of all eligible beneficiaries, 73.3% received a third dose of the original mRNA COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the study period.
77%, 73% effective 14 to 60 days postvaccination Fourteen to 60 days postvaccination, third-dose Moderna relative vaccine effectiveness (RVE, compared with two doses) against hospitalization was 77.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 76.0% to 78.4%), and Pfizer/BioNTech RVE was 72.5% (95% CI, 70.8% to 74.0%). The added benefit was high for 61 days to 4 months (Moderna RVE, 42.1% [95% CI, 37.5% to 46.3%]; Pfizer RVE, 51.0% [95% CI, 48.0% to 53.7%) but waned substantially thereafter.
Participants with a previous medically attended COVID-19 diagnosis derived substantial protection against hospitalization after a third vaccine dose for 14 to 60 days (Moderna RVE, 71.1%; 95% CI, 62.6% to 77.6% and Pfizer RVE, 65.5%; 95% CI, 55.1%, 73.5%). Both vaccines still provided a benefit—albeit waning—for up to 120 days in these patients.
A third dose of Pfizer was only 5.4% effective against hospitalization after 120 days for those with a previous medically attended COVID-19 diagnosis, while Moderna provided a greater benefit for this group at that timepoint (RVE, 43.1%). The benefits were similar across all age-groups and both sexes and were observed more in participants with weakened immunity than in those with healthy immune systems.
Moderna more effective against hospitalization A three-dose Moderna vaccine regimen was more effective against COVID-19 hospitalization than the Pfizer regimen at 14 to 60 days (RVE, 35.2%; 95% CI, 30.2% to 39.9%), 61 to 90 days (RVE, 40.6%; 95% CI, 36.5% to 44.6%), and 91 to 120 days (RVE, 34.8%; 95% CI, 29.0% to 40.2%).
"Our observed differences between brands could be partly due to the higher dosage of Moderna (100 µg [microgram] for the third-dose primary series for certain immunocompromised individuals and 50 µg for the first booster dose for the general population) compared to Pfizer-BioNTech (30 µg) vaccines," the study authors wrote.
There were no significant differences in effectiveness against COVID-19 hospitalization between brands after 120 days following a third dose (RVE, 7.5%; 95% CI, 0.9% to 15.2%). But more severe outcomes such as death and in-hospital death showed significant differences in effectiveness between brands 14 to 90 days after a third dose.
"With more recent formulations of COVID-19 vaccines and new dominating SARS-CoV-2 variants, additional studies that investigate waning effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines are needed to inform the design of future vaccination programs, especially for high-risk individuals," the researchers wrote.

The U.S. government has been forced to admit that Covid mRNA vaccines increase the risk of new-onset diabetes.
According to a new case report published by the NIH, Covid vaccine recipients are more likely to develop diabetes than their unvaccinated counterparts.
“Multiple cases of postvaccination immune-related adverse events have been reported. We, hereby, present a patient who presented with new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) after COVID-19 messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccination,” the case report declared in the ‘Background/Objective’ section.
Infowars.com reports: The case report regards a 38-year-old healthy man who received his second Covid shot. He experienced sudden onset of polyuria (productions of large amounts of diluted urine), polydipsia (great thirst, often associated with diabetes) and blurry vision. He was later diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is the bodies inability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin.

📆 July 2023 📰 Rare link between coronavirus vaccines and Long Covid–like illness starts to gain acceptance 🗞️ Science
But in recent months, what some call Long Vax has gained wider acceptance among doctors and scientists, and some are now working to better understand and treat its symptoms.
“You see one or two patients and you wonder if it’s a coincidence,” says Anne Louise Oaklander, a neurologist and researcher at Harvard Medical School. “But by the time you’ve seen 10, 20,” she continues, trailing off. “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”
Symptoms can include persistent headaches, severe fatigue, and abnormal heart rate and blood pressure. They appear hours, days, or weeks after vaccination and are difficult to study. But researchers and clinicians are increasingly finding some alignment with known medical conditions. One is small fiber neuropathy, a condition Oaklander studies, in which nerve damage can cause tingling or electric shock–like sensations, burning pain, and blood circulation problems. The second is a more nebulous syndrome, with symptoms sometimes triggered by small fiber neuropathy, called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). It can involve muscle weakness, swings in heart rate and blood pressure, fatigue, and brain fog.
German Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach acknowledged in March that though rare, Long Covid–like symptoms after vaccination are a real phenomenon. He said his ministry was working to organize funding for studies, although none has been announced so far.
Tumblr media
Science first wrote about these health concerns in January 2022, describing efforts by scientists at the National Institutes of Health to study and treat affected individuals. A study including 23 people was posted as a preprint in May 2022 but never published. Following Science’s story, almost 200 people contacted the journal sharing their postvaccination symptoms.
Research has since proceeded slowly. This is “a challenging outcome to monitor,” Tom Shimabukuro of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told a government advisory committee in January. Still, more than two dozen case studies have accumulated describing POTS or small fiber neuropathy following a COVID-19 shot, regardless of the vaccine manufacturer.
An immune overreaction to SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which COVID-19 vaccines use to induce protective antibodies, is one possible cause of these symptoms. One theory is that after vaccination some people generate another round of antibodies targeting the first. Those antibodies could function somewhat like spike itself: Spike targets a cell surface protein called the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor, enabling the virus to enter cells. The rogue antibodies might also bind to ACE2, which helps regulate blood pressure and heart rate, says Bernhard Schieffer, a cardiologist at the University of Marburg. If those antibodies disrupt ACE2 signaling, that could cause the racing heart rates and blood pressure swings seen in POTS.
Small fiber neurons also have the ACE2 receptor on their surface, so in theory rogue antibodies could contribute to neuropathy. But Matthew Schelke, a neurologist at Columbia University who has treated small fiber neuropathy in both Long Covid and postvaccine patients, says pinning down a connection won’t be easy. Even when unusual antibodies turn up in someone’s blood, “it’s extremely difficult to know if any of these are pathogenic or if they are just bystanders,” he says. Other immune system components that fuel inflammation may also harm nerves, he notes.

Mr. Getson: I have tablings here from a constituent who understood that they had COVID, which was undiagnosed. They went to a clinic, had their blood serology taken prevaccination and then postvaccination. The constituent told me that at the clinic they were advised that they shouldn’t have to take one after the postvaccination because it never records any higher than 80. The results showed 196. For the submission, I will also submit that this is my medical information. For the members opposite who question where I’m at: trust the science.

Botox: Does the COVID-19 Vaccine Really Make You Immune to Botox?#Botox #COVID19 #Vaccine #Immune #Botox
Does your Botox seem to be fading faster than usual? Apparently, you’re not alone: Not only are doctors taking to social media to report patients needing more frequent touch-ups, but a recent study found that Botox could be less effective after COVID vaccination. The key word there is could, though: The report states that Botox “might be less effective” postvaccination, noting that “further…

Wow, I've had friends who were flattened by pertussis, but I didn't know about the short effectiveness of the booster. Thank you for passing that on. I just checked (yup, I'd double-check my doctor too):
"Immunity typically wanes two to four years after administration of the acellular pertussis vaccine, although this can occur as early as one year postvaccination. Individuals with natural infection also experience waning immunity, including children with a history of pertussis." under "Why Does Pertussis Remain a Common Disease Despite High Vaccination Rates?"
It's been about a month since I got whooping cough and I'm still feeling the symptoms because I literally can't yell anymore. I mean. I *can*. If I really really tried. But suddenly raising my voice has me choked on my breath. And when I'm talking for a long time I'll swallow every few words. It's horrible.
Anyway if you're an adult you should be getting your TDaP boosted every ten years. If you're in your early 20s like me, it's probably been ten years if not more since your last pediatric TDaP, so check with your doctor about getting it boosted. You really do *not* want to get whooping cough. It's not fun.
Also. If you have a persistent cough that feels different from any other cough you've had before, listen to your body and get that checked out. Whooping cough wasn't even top on my radar when I went to the doctor, but I had a cough that felt different from anything I'd experienced before. The characteristic "whooping" part of whooping cough doesn't usually start until you're a few weeks into the infection, and if you have it, you want to start on antibiotics *before* it gets really bad. I unfortunately got the "whooping" part of the infection just a day after I went to the doctor and started antibiotics. It wasn't fun at all and I actually thought I was going to die because I couldn't breathe. But it could have been so much worse if I hadn't started on antibiotics, and at least after I finished my course of antibiotics I was no longer contagious.
TLDR: Whooping cough is much worse than the silly sounding name suggests so get vaccinated.

COVID vaccine efficacy against severe illness just under 50%, per early estimates from 2023 - Published Aug 20, 2024
Two European observational studies estimate the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of the COVID-19 XBB.1.5 vaccine approved in fall 2023 against hospitalization, the first one finding 49% overall VE in adults, and one showing good protection—but uneven uptake—among pregnant women.
Steep declines in VE after 1 month For the first study, published in Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, researchers with the European Hospital Vaccine Effectiveness Group conducted a test-negative case-control study on the VE against hospitalization of the XBB.1.5 COVID-19 vaccine in the first months of its rollout from October 2023 to January 2024.
The XBB.1.5-like+F456L variant was dominant in Europe from fall to mid-December 2023, when BA.2.86 supplanted it.
The participants were 622 adults hospitalized for COVID-19 and 3,457 control patients admitted for a different severe respiratory infection to 41 hospitals at 7 sites participating in the Vaccine Effectiveness, Burden and Impact Studies (VEBIS) study. In total, 27% of COVID-19 patients and 44% of controls had been vaccinated after fall 2023, most with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.
The median time between vaccination and symptom onset was 58 days for COVID-19 patients and 52 days for controls.
Overall VE was 49% against hospitalization (range, 69% at 14 to 29 days to 40% at 60 to 105 days postvaccination), although confidence intervals overlapped for all estimates, indicating uncertainty. VE was over 70% in adults ages 65 years and older up to 1 month after vaccination. VE in patients ages 80 and older declined from 76% in the first 29 days to 39% after 60 days.
The study authors noted that their VE estimates are lower than those of three previous European studies but in line with a fourth, except for a greater decline in VE with increasing time since vaccination (TSV), proposing that the differences could be attributed to different TSVs bands.
"The findings of our study suggest that the adapted COVID-19 XBB.1.5 vaccines provided protection against hospitalisation in the first 3.5 months post vaccination, by reducing the risk of COVID-19 hospitalisation by approximately half among the vaccinated individuals," they concluded.
Uptake highest in those with chronic conditions The second case-control study, published in Vaccine, included all 47,046 pregnancies ending from June 2021 to August 2022 among 39,213 women seen at Northwest London general practices. In 57% of pregnancies, the mother had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine during their pregnancy, with 91% of them receiving a second dose.
Pregnant women, the study authors noted, are at higher risk of COVID-19 complications such as hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, invasive mechanical ventilation, and death.
"They are also at increased risk of pregnancy-related complications such as preeclampsia and emergency cesarean delivery, and their infants are at higher risk of being preterm or stillborn," they wrote, adding that uptake has been suboptimal.
Most pregnancies (80%) were among women aged 25 to 39 years, those who were White (39%) or Asian (34%), and those living in areas in the second (35%) or third (29%) most deprived quintiles of socioeconomic deprivation. The most common of the five risk factors studied was asthma (9.9%), and chronic heart disease was the least common (0.68%).
A total of 180 women were hospitalized for COVID-19. Admission for COVID-19 was much less likely among vaccinated women than among the unvaccinated. A conditional logistic regression model suggested a five-fold decrease in the chances of COVID-19 hospitalization in vaccinated women, compared with their unvaccinated peers (odds ratio [OR], 0.22).
Vaccine uptake was lowest in women ages 18 to 24 years (33%), Black women compared with White (37%; OR, 0.55), and those in socioeconomically deprived areas (50%). Coverage was higher among women with chronic conditions, with the greatest uptake among those with chronic heart disease (75% for first dose, 94% for second).
Among women with chronic conditions, women with asthma (OR, 1.20), chronic heart disease (OR, 2.34), diabetes (OR, 1.54), and morbid obesity (OR, 1.15) had significantly higher odds of receiving at least one vaccine dose during pregnancy, compared with those without the condition.
The probability of receiving a first dose of the vaccine was nearly six times higher in the 45- to 49-year) age group than in those ages 25 to 29, compared with 18- to 24-year-olds.
Second-dose patterns were similar. Hospitalized women were much less likely to have been vaccinated than those not hospitalized (22% vs 57%; OR, 0.22). "This association reinforces evidence on the real-world effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in preventing severe disease and consequent hospital admission among pregnant women," the researchers wrote.
"COVID-19 vaccine uptake among pregnant women is suboptimal, particularly in younger women, Black women, and women in more deprived areas," they added. "Interventions should focus on increasing uptake in these groups to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities. Future vaccination programmes should engage pregnant women earlier and communicate with them clearly and carefully."

I always love showing off our fabulous hand mirrors, and I am especially fans of our two Gustav Klimt designs — the famous “Portrait Of Adele Bloch Bauer” and “The Kiss” — so I held them together for a photo. In looking closer at them next to each other, Adele looks a little concerned, deep in thought in hers, and in the other, the two lovers are happily kissing, oblivious to everything around them…. and I couldn’t help but think of the angst in waiting for the Covid Vaccines to become available, AND the joy and possibility (and hugs and kisses) we hanker for post 2nd vaccine (or single if you went J&J) and the requisite waiting period for them to take full effect! Either way! Adorable hand mirrors to gaze at your lovely faces!
