Top 30 to Look Forward to at GenCon 2019 (#1-10)
This year’s GenCon was from Aug. 1-4, 2019. Here’s a look at the top 30 games I would’ve wanted to hunt down if I had been able to attend the convention. One game did come off my initial list because I got the chance to play it at my FLGS, and I didn’t enjoy it (Era: Medieval Age, sorry Matt Leacock, I’m still a fan; I just didn’t like this one).
This list was compiled using BGG’s GenCon Preview list provided by the wonderful W. Eric Martin. I sorted the games alphabetically by publisher, so the games are listed by publisher instead of the ones I’m looking forward to playing the most. Without further ado, here’s the list of my top 30!
Jurassic Parts - Published by 25th Century Games and designed by Kevin Lanzing, this appears to be a quick playing filler for 2-4 players. Kevin Lanzing previously designed Flash Point: Fire Rescue, which reminded me of a firefighting version of Pandemic (the core gameplay was clearly inspired by the cooperative game, Pandemic). In Jurassic Parts, players are archaeologists trying to place their chisels around hex tiles to chip off slabs of rock and collect fossils. The game plays in 15-30 min., which is why I wonder if it’s supposed to be a lightweight filler game. I like the theme--dinosaurs, which seems to be a hot theme since 2018-2019.
Truck Off: The Food Truck Frenzy Roll & Write - Published by Adam’s Apple Games and designed by Adam Rehberg, this game is for 1+ players and takes about 30 minutes. It’s a roll & write about food--enough said! I’m interested in both the gaming mechanism and the theme.
Atelier: The Painter's Studio - Published by AEG and designed by Nicholas Bongiu, this game is for 2-4 players and plays in 30-45 min. As far as I can tell using BGG, this appears to be the designer’s first published game. I like the art theme, and I like that the player’s board is shaped like a palette. I wonder how this game compares to Fresco, which is probably the most well-liked board game about art on the market currently.
Ecos: First Continent - Published by AEG and designed by John D. Clair, this is for 2-6 players in 45-75 min. In this game, “Players are forces of nature molding the planet, but with competing visions of its grandeur.“ I’m instantly intrigued by this world building game that has players competing to create their own vision of Earth!
Walking in Burano - This is the last title by AEG, designed by Wei Min-Ling. This is a quick playing game for 1-4 players in 20-40 min. This designer previously produced familiar titles, Hanamikoji (2016) and Burano (2015). Burano is a beautiful game in which you and competing players build up the island of Burano, giving the finished game board an eye-popping 3-D look. Walking in Burano appears to be a faster playing (Burano plays in 1.5-2 hrs) card based game. I think I’m drawn in by the colorful houses of Burano. It’s so picturesque--definitely a place I’d like to visit someday, if I can ever make it to Venice, Italy.
Tiny Towns - Published by AEG and designed by new designer, Peter McPherson, this game admittedly hit my list thanks to my friendly local game store (FLGS). I got to play it during my gaming store’s GenCan’t event, for all those who can’t make it to GenCon. The game is thinky and more challenging than what’s on the surface. I realized halfway through that I had placed a few early pieces poorly and wouldn’t be able to fill all spots on my board with buildings. I’m looking forward to the next time I get to play this game in hopes to redeem myself!
Welcome to Dino World - Published by Alley Cat Games and designed by a trio: James O'Connor, Nick Shaw, and Dávid Turczi. This looks like a roll & write game about building a dinosaur park (remember that theme from last year?). It’s for 1+ players in 40-70 min. I don’t understand why it takes so long to play this game, but I’m still interested in the theme!
Arkeis - Published by Ankama and designed by a quartet: Antoine Bauza, Corentin Lebrat, Ludovic Maublanc, and Théo Rivière. Antoine Bauza is a well established designer in the industry, designing games such as 7 Wonders, Ghost Stories, Takenoko, Hanabi, Conan, Tokaido, Terror in Meeple City, Oceanos, Victorian Masterminds...I could go on and on. He made card drafting fun with 7 Wonders and Oceanos. He’s experimented with different game mechanisms and has experience working with other designers. Ludovic Maublanc is also an impressive designer, having worked on games such as Cyclades, Mr. Jack, Conan, Cash ‘n Guns, Dice Town, and Kingdomino Duel. The other two designers appear to be lesser known, although it’s worth noting that Théo also designed Nagaraja, a quick playing 2-player game that seems to have gotten some buzz this year. Enough about the designers’ pedigrees, let’s talk about the game! Arkeis caught my eye because it appears to be a legacy style, cooperative, Egyptian themed adventure game. From the publisher, Arkeis is “a story-driven, cooperative miniatures game in which players explore ancient Egyptian ruins... Each scenario comes with objectives the players may accomplish during the game. Completing these will reward them with new key items or upgrades that will influence later scenarios.” If all of that doesn’t make you intrigued, I don’t know what will.
Draftosaurus - Published by Ankama and designed by the same group above: Antoine Bauza, Corentin Lebrat, Ludovic Maublanc, and Théo Rivière. This little game is for 2-5 players and plays in 15 min. I think it’s a dino-themed “Sushi Go” type of drafting game that includes dino meeples! You draft uniquely shaped dinosaurs! What’s not to love? Did I mention that dinosaurs seems to be a hot theme this year?
The Stygian Society - Published by APE Games and designed by Kevin Wilson, this co-op is for 1-4 players and takes 1-2 hours. From the publisher, “Players drop cubes into the tower based on which skills they select but also cubes for the enemies. Both players and the enemies act based on what drops out the bottom.” I love co-op games, and the cube tower sounds interesting. I haven’t played many cube tower games (I’ve never played Amerigo), but I have experience with Mord Im A Rosa.
Ok, now that I’ve written up the first ten, I think I’ll break up this post in chunks of ten to make the list more manageable. Stay tuned for 11-20 in the next post!

Post Game 20190228 VS TOR: We Don't Need You
The return of John Tavares to Fort Neverlose was something special. A 6-1 Victory that was nothing short of spectacular.

Mayfield in for Hickey
Lou’s Burger of the Game (Hero)
Casey Cizikas. There are a lot of candidates for the Bobby Nystrom Award this year, but it’s nights like tonight that people will put on the highlight reel when they hand him that award. 19th goal is a shorty. Shut down Johnny Pajama when they were on the ice together, and smiled every second of the game. Man that guy must go through a ton of toothpaste.
Into the Chili (Goat)
John Gruden and Nick Leddy are gonna share this until there is a spectacularly bad game by an Islander, or an opponent. They share it because Nick Leddy should not be on the PP1. He is there for zone entries. But even when he makes a nice one, he becomes the dog that caught the car. “Okay, now what do I do?” . He is now officially the 6th defenseman.
Salad Bar (Random Thoughts About the Game)
The much anticipated crowd reaction to John Tavares’ return to the barn did not disappoint. When Tavares had the puck the crowd booed enough for it to be audible on the TV broadcast. “We Don’T Need You” pretty much says it all. In his defense, as he was until July 1, 2018 Johnny Pajamas was a class act all the way. Acknowledging the Islanders, and the fans after the tribute and sulking through the post gamer… Stan must be in Israel.
The Islanders controlled momentum for last two thirds of the game. I’d say they were on the right side of the puck, and playing physically for at least 45 minutes. That’s the way it’s got to be until June. By HDCF% the momentum swing didn’t happen until the second period, but by physicality it started within a minute of puck drop.
The chants of “A-Hole” were a little much. I think “We Don’t Need You” was a HR. “A-Hole” was a foul tip third strike. a.k.a. a bad bunt with bases loaded and two outs.
The hits just keep on coming. The #Isles have been know for their physicality ever since the first time MC^2 was put together. It’s been a while, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game this one sidedly violent, with so few penalties. Great job!
Barry Trotz understands the value of momentum. This team had hit a bit of a lull. This game was going to be incredible no matter what 18 he threw out there, or how he threw them out there. But he’s starting to show why standing pat at the deadline, was able to generate offense for free.
Mayfield and Toews are playing out of their minds. The balance of a strong stay at home defenseman and an offensive minded D is special. It’s what was in mind when the Isles first paired Leddy and Boychuck. But Scott and Devon are starting to build something special. Because they both have enough of their counter-attributes to show those talents every night. Mayfield had at least three rushes from the defensive zone through the offensive zone, that result in a shot, or good possession time. I’m looking right at you Nick Leddy. We know you have it in you.
The Bubbly (Playoff Status)
TEAMW L OT P PPG PRJGRLCDPOATLA0TBL49124102 1.569 1291720A1BOS3817985 1.328 1091812A2TOR3921482 1.281 1051811A3METM0NYI3719781 1.286 1051911M1WAS3621779 1.234 101189M2CBJ3624375 1.190 98198M3WCW0PIT3322874 1.175 96198W1CAR3423674 1.175 96198W2OUTXXMON3423775 1.172 96187PHI3026868 1.063 87184FLA2825965 1.048 86204BUF2926866 1.048 86194NYR27261064 1.016 83193NJD2531858 0.906 7418-1DET2332955 0.859 7018-3OTT2237549 0.766 6318-6
The bubble is currently 96. The Islanders only need 15 points with 19 games to go. This is no time to coast, but they could. Making the playoffs is not a concern at the moment. What they will do battle for every night is HTA.
Dessert (What’s Coming Up)
WAS (03/01/19) The Islanders are now two points ahead of the Washington Capitals with only a game in hand. This will be the most important game to date for Barry Trotz’ Isles. This game will probably determine whether it’s a two team race for first, or a battle between WAS, CBJ and PIT for home team advantage in the Metro’s second playoff pairing.
PHI (03/03/19) The Flyers are hanging on to their playoffs hopes by a thread. They can only lose four games with 18 remaining to make the bubble. They know where they are, that’s why Simmonds is in Nashville.
OTT (03/05/19) Since my last review OTT fired their coach Guy Boucher and replaced him with fiery Marc Crawford. Seems a little odd to name an interim coach at this point. I think we can all assume that Ottawa is just getting a jump on the next five years.

2016 Review
Last year I spent several days (and well over a dozen hours) reviewing 2015. This is a drastic improvement from 2006, when I spent several months reviewing the previous year. But still, the process could be improved. So, I spent about a half-dozen hours going over my process (see my previous post for lessons learned from that) and am going to hopefully finish reviewing 2016 in just a couple of hours. This will be a beast of a post, but should only be a single post. Here’s the structure I’ll use.
Why am I doing this?
Already did this last year, will just revisit and revise it for this year.
What did i do?
The highlights of what happened in each month, plus how many total checkins I had that month and lessons learned.
Best and worst things that happened.
Will likely be pulled from the above list.
Habits analysis
How much progress did I make with each habit?
Is it still a good habit? (keep/toss/change?)
What are the biggest barriers to crushing it and ideas to overcome those barriers?
Themes analysis
Love
Unplug
Core values
How well did I live them?
Expected vs. Actual
What things did I want to get done, vs. what did I actually get done?
WHY AM I DOING THIS
Last year, I clarified the reasons I spend several hours (and even days) at the beginning of each year going over the previous year in nauseating detail:
Make new/different mistakes
Get more accurate w/goals vs. reality. Get my expectations closer to reality, without lowering my standards or ambitions.
Increase my ability to accomplish goals
To record things, so that I have a sense of having lived, of having “done things”, of having moved forward in my life.
I would still consider these to be accurate, but I would summarize the first three by saying this:
"I do these yearly reviews to tighten my 'wisdom feedback loop'."
I wrote about what the 'unlived life within us' means to me: Decreased clutter and increased clarity. This, I think, is the essence of what wisdom in action looks like. So if I'm a) always making new and mistakes instead of old ones b) shrinking the gap between my expectations/plans and my reality, while c) increasing the difficulty of tasks to which I aspire, then I'm increasing my velocity towards becoming my definition of 'wisdom in action'. Or, tightening the wisdom feedback loop.
I also want to add another reason for doing this: To help others accomplish the same things.
I don't mean that they will have the same goals, but if they have the same reasons, I can help them. I've done this process in increasingly less wrong ways every year since I was 18. And each 'less wrong' process makes me that much more valuable to people that are trying to do the same.
Also, I mean this in both a virtual and physical capacity. Nobody reads this blog, so I don't expect that I'll be able to help lots of folks virtually in January 2017, but perhaps months or years from now people may discover it and use it to improve their own process for self improvement. I'm sitting next to my good friend Mike (pictured above) and he interrupts me every few minutes to ask about how I do x, y, or z and my advice to him is always based in personal experience...based on a lot of wrong ways that I've done these reviews over the years. Hopefully I can help facilitate more of these in-person sessions and be valuable because of the work I've put in for the past 15 years.

INSIGHTS
I wrote about being worried to hit a burnout wall after my great January month, and this is what I wrote in the second week of feb "I did hit that wall (screwed around for 2 hrs on thursday PM)...but then recovered and have done okay since, and in the grand scheme of things, that's AMAZING for me (only screwing around for 2 hrs)." That's how in the zone I was - I complained about 2 hrs.
i turned down a lot of things to stay in the zone - ski weekends, a wedding in Oregon
After one of my best weeks ever in the history of recording checkins: "Why?It wasn't trying harder. It was saying no, keeping my head clear, and getting up really early to knock out all the stuff that I'd usually put off until the end of the day. It feels like a miracle, like I'm a new person. It gives me an insane amount of confidence...So remarkable that the true answer to how to make such dramatic change is basically: do less, say no, cut out the BS...if you do that, all you should be left with is your own voice, and it's plenty wise enough."

BEST
finishing residency & passing boards

having one metric that mattered and tracking that only - doubled down on using coach.me and accomplished my NY resolution for the first time in my life
also...
gave med student adversity speech
Annabelle was born
nick marriage/end of a great roomate run
south africa month
RV - doing what i said
quality time - vegas, grandparents, parents, friends, surfing
WORST
I didn't grow in my romantic relationships as much as i did in 2015 - In 2015 i grew a lot by having the goal to be "terrifyingly honest" in relationships. I didn't push myself to that standard this year and stagnated as a result.
also...
things took longer than I thought - but that was good lesson to learn because it forced me to accept and live by realistic timelines, and because i didn't have a job I could follow all the way through on my plans
RV was more work than expected (example of above) - i first was glad that i spent time getting to know the RV and how to fix things, but i got to the point where i don't care to 'learn' more, i'd rather spend that time being a doctor and use the money made to pay a professional.
i got broke - i coasted on credit cards in the interim between residency and starting a job and got pretty close to 100% broke - but this was also a lesson that was important. things cost more money than you expect and if they are really priorities, then you've got to pay the price, in both time and money.
HABITS ANALYSIS
In my recent post “My Goals for 2017″ I said:
“Last year my goal was to check in to more daily habits on coach.me. And I crushed it. And it had the ripple effect of me crushing a bunch of other areas of my life...when using the 'total number of checkins metric’ I improved 107% since last year and 60% over my best year ever (2013).”
This was the only metric that I tracked week over week. And because of that, for the first time ever, I consistently did week reviews where I knew how far ahead or behind I was from my overall goal (eg on July 1, I should have 1,000 checkins for the year, if I had 1,100 at that point, I would note that I was 10% ahead of schedule). Making this the only metric that I tracked had a positive affect on lots of the parts of my life - most obviously, on each of the areas the specific habit addressed.
So, now I’m going to take each goal and ask:
How much progress did I make?
Is it still a good habit? (keep/toss/change?)
What are the biggest barriers to crushing it and ideas to overcome those barriers?
progress vs 2015: 272 checkins vs 117 checkins. 132% improvement.
I didn't feel like i was growing in this in 2015. I was doing it but didn't feel more calm/mindful throughout the day, which is the whole point. Late this year I downloaded several meditation apps and HeadSpace stood out as far and away the best one. I've spent at least $100 total at this point and I really am growing in this super important area. I catch myself (the most important part) getting anxious, frustrated, distracted, etc. and then use the techniques I've learned from this app to get back to calm. Probably the best money I spent all year in terms of its return on my health.
keep/toss/change: definitely keep, continue progress with headspace app
barriers: just making the time, but i'm at a point where i like this enough that it doesn't take discipline. sometimes i do it when i'm tired and don't get much out of it. On those days I should consider doing it twice - the second time when I'm not exhausted.
progress vs 2015: 233 checkins vs 111 checkins. 110% improvement
In 2015 wrote about wanting to feel clear-headed after walking away from a session of reviewing goals & 'visioncasting' and i didn't have a good process for it at the time. Surprising to see that this was still an issue as of the end of 2016. i came up with a system just a couple days ago that will hopefully help with this and i think the reason this will work is because of my improved mental condition/focusing of the mind that came from meditating. Glad to see how long this problem has existed. Should motivate me to solve it this year.
keep/toss/change: keep it as a goal, but changed it as noted above to have some structure
barriers: lack of clarity - which I have now
progress vs 2015: 138 checkins vs 77 checkins. 78% improvement
Posted 60+ things this year, (< 30 last year), did much better, big realization is that this was streaky. Another great example of being able to keep consistent tabs on something because you kept all your data collection in one place (I kept track of all my writing progress on coach.me, including using the notes section to keep track of when I posted stuff).
keep/toss/change: I would like to actually start sharing my content somehow. This probably means fiddling with marketing, setting some goals about viewership, but I feel like this might do two negative things: 1. scare me off from writing and 2. change what/how I write. So will probably at least track viewership or something.
barriers: none for posting on this blog. Barriers to working on larger projects (book, etc.) are the same that used to (and sometimes still do) keep me from publishing on this blog. Namely: fear. I think the answer for that is writing with friends. Going to try to schedule writing hangouts, even if only brief ones.
progress vs 2015: 210 checkins vs 80 checkins. 163 % improvement
Goal last year was 200, actual was 80. this year i didn't have a goal but hit 210. Hell. Yes! Big realization here was starting with one small thing at a time. I went on a streak from august where I added one new thing to my physical health regimen each month, and kept it going consistently until late november, when I got injured playing football, then had a friend visit from out of town for a week, then went on a 34-day straight work assignment away from home. I took January off (though I still had 4 checkins that month + 8 days of skiing, vs my monthly average of 6.7 in 2015) and have been on track 100% thus far this month.
keep/toss/change: change to one small thing I'm doing that month to improve my health. Keep track of it in the notes of exercise.
barriers: injury (don't play football!). Simplicity/low bar - adding one small thing per month put me on course to have the best 4 months of physical health progress in years...maybe ever.
progress vs 2015: 153 checkins vs 56 checkins. 173% improvement.
This is a keystone habit. If I do this then everything else goes better. I realized this last year and wrote about how important it was. This year I had the second highest amount of improvement of all my habits (except for eat the frog, which was 193% improvement). I’m super proud of myself for making such amazing progress on this...but it still is the 9th most checked into habit out of 12. As one of the most important habits it should be one of the most checked into.
keep/toss/change: keep - and double down on it! again!
barriers: Make sure to identify it when planning the day and checking it off when you do it, even if it’s not a specific action (e.g. if you stayed calm all day).
progress vs 2015: 51 checkins vs 82 checkins. -38 % decrease
I don't have this anymore....but the bigger lesson here is 'what's the thing that causes the background static/stress in your life and what's your process for getting rid of it or ignoring it?'
keep/toss/change: already tossed it, but getting out of my email inbox is my #1 goal for Q1 of 2017 and I'm well on my way. Also, to get rid of the static - my visioncasting format really is helpful in clearing my head to do this.
barriers: I'm addicted to my email inbox. Need to CREATE barriers (and an alternative outlet) to keep me out of it.
progress vs 2015: 113 checkins vs 83 checkins. 36% improvement
i crushed the boards, studying 37 days before taking it (about 83 times the year before total). Totally didn’t deserve that. So no clue what happened there. Then i got a bit lost on what 'studying' made sense. i started with reading a book summary every day, which felt like i was accomplishing something, but none of the content really stuck, even when i reviewed my highlights on the weekends. then changed to tax books, which was awesome bc i wanted to learn that stuff. i still need to nail down what this means and then pick a bite-sized way to chip at it. I also expect this to change often. I kept track of actual studying vs expected for awhile, which was motivational, as was just hearing that another resident friend of mine was working her ass off. Just hearing her say that she studied 2 hrs per day in addition to her residency duties lit a fire under me.
keep/toss/change: change continually, should be part of planning my day
barriers: lack of clarity on what this means, get rid of it by deciding what it means when i plan my day
progress vs 2015: 348 checkins vs 183 checkins. 90% improvement
Went OFF on this. not sure why other than that it's something you can get away with skipping a day here and there and still check in later. also stopped rating the days - not sure why i did this, other than i couldn't put a number when i tried to think of it. hopefully this is a reflection of an improved attitude and a better acceptance of my life, along with less judgement, which I wrote about on my birthday.
keep/toss/change: keep, might revitalize the 'today' project, because when I read through my summaries of each day they spark certain memories...but a photo does that so much better.
barriers: none...but might be if I start expecting myself to take a picture.
progress vs 2015: 252 checkins vs 145 checkins. 74% improvement
i've ended up doing this during my 'think about goals' time, which is not when it's supposed to happen. but everything i wrote about this goal last year, applies to this year
“I’m afraid to do this sometimes, especially if i’m not in bed on time & am tired….because i have to come to terms with all the things i will not get to do tomorrow. But then i end up just feeling sad and like “damn, tomorrow’s going to really suck because i won’t be able to get everything done that i want, and i’m bummed that i didn’t get what i wanted to get done today, too.” Wow, writing that. What a crummy/unintelligent strategy for ending your day. I HAVE to stop with energy/motivation in the tank so I’ll have the willpower left to accept what has happened that day & decide what i’m going to do the next day…because when I do do this, it really does feel mentally freeing & motivating for getting up in the morning…i literally don’t want to wake up in the morning when I haven’t done this because I just have this ball of vague stress to great me that I feel: “Well, not sure what all this stuff is that i need to do but i know that i’m not going to be able to get as much of it done as i want to and even what i decide to work on i probably won’t get finished which is going to give me a feeling of being even more 'behind’…so yeah - not pumped about this day”. What a terrible cycle of not-awesome! Glad I articulated the concept of paying the opportunity cost of planning up front.”
This even happened during my 6 months off, or on days i was truly supposed to be 'on vacation'. the idea of 'i don't want to wake up tomorrow'. That was a big surprise because i thought it was because of my job. It turns out it was totally because of my attitude - which was affected by my expectations (pay opportunity cost up front) and my energy. I need to manage both of those.
keep/toss/change: keep, but try not to do it until AFTER you've meditated and taken a high level view of your life (visioncasting/reviewing goals) so that you have the right mindset when planning the day.
barriers: my attitude at the end of the day. not wanting to wake up, addressed above.
progress vs 2015: 126 checkins vs 43 checkins. 193% improvement
This was one of the top two most important things on my list to improve from last year...and I did it! This was the most improvement of any of my goals. However, I still have lots of room to get better at this, as it was only the 9th most checked into goal I had.
keep/toss/change: keep. duh.
barriers: just having the courage to identify it when planning the day, and then checking it off at the end of the day.
progress vs 2015: 45 checkins vs 18 checkins. 150% improvement
These were too long and I didn’t have a central place to put them. I changed it and put EVERYTHING in my notes instead of on a spreadsheet or somewhere else and that 100% solved the problem. It kept me keeping track of my progress throughout the year. This little checkin session helped recalibrate me and actually fed my feedback loop.
keep/toss/change: change to track my 4 goals for the year.
barriers: none. just keep the time expectation down at 10min.
progress vs 2015: 130 checkins vs 68 checkins. 91% improvement
This is a goal that sneaks up on you because the problem is pretty much never solved (my back hurts every day and every night). In retrospect I had an amazing year with it. I was able to sleep on my back for a couple nights in South Africa, was able to stand for significant amounts of time without significant pain, and even let myself be active (i.e. sprinting) to push the boundaries of what’s possible for my back.
keep/toss/change: change by continuing to try new methods and seeing what works
barriers: this is all about minimal time commitment (5-10 min) and building from there, because some of the stretches feel SO GOOD that once I do a few of them I get more into it.
THEMES ANALYSIS
Love
I didn't set the standard of being “terrifyingling honest” so I didn’t get out of (or into situations) fast enough, or at all.
I also had a breakdown when a bunch of friends got married on the same weekend (felt like I was ‘alone’ or doing something wrong) & redefined what this meant. Ultimately, I’m not worried or ‘empty’ because I’m missing out on physical intimacy, what I’m missing is emotional connection, or interactions that fill my emotional tank. So now that’s what I’m doing - focusing on those kinds of interactions, and turning down ones that are anything less than 8/10 in this respect.
Also, part of this is giving/being selfless and it motivated my goal for this year.
Unplug
I spent time at the cabin and other time just alone, and it was good. Read Deep Work twice. Probably could have said 'no' a little bit more often, especially near the end of the year. Am realizing more and more that this is the ‘answer’ in so many ways.
CORE VALUES
This is the third year I’ve tried to systematically focus on one core value per week. I didn't do this consistently. I want to give up on it...but so did Ben Franklin. I now have it in my daily visioncasting so I think I'm okay with that.
EXPECTED VS ACTUAL
At the beginning of the year I listed out what I wanted to happen week to week all year long. It stressed me out once I fell behind this, and I wanted to somehow keep an updated sense of how many iterations happened and what changes were made. I quickly found that keeping track of the iterations was a huge hassle. So this year I’m just trying to book out my calendar really far in advance and chunk it at a high level (i.e. this week I had off and just blocked off “finances/admin” for the week).
I’ll publish my ‘takeaways’ from this review, as well as things to do differently in 2017 in a later post.

Teachers describe their worst injury at work
For some reason, when I ask a question about people’s worst experiences I get far more clear answers to the question, alongside complaints about that I have a sinister agenda and demands that teachers be silent.
My latest question was:
What’s the worst injury you’ve suffered while working as a teacher?
I’ve had fewer complaints about this one, although somebody did sarcastically ask why I didn’t ask for people’s best injury. I’ve ignored the many responses where people discussed damage that was only to their pride, credibility or dreams. I haven’t included discussion of mental health as that’s been covered in previous posts. Also most (but not all) of the people telling me about their paper cuts have been left out. As ever, I followed up the more suspicious ones, but may still have been fooled. The thread can be found here.
I shot myself in the arm… though it wasn’t with a firearm. With the top of an exploding 2 L[itre] bottle. Lab coat had the bloodstains to prove it. I was utterly, utterly mind-bendingly stupid and learned a very great deal in about a third of a second
30 mini whiteboards fell out of cupboard onto my head – 1 at a time – 4 hrs in A&E and head glued back together – very painful … my fault for not putting them away properly
Caught a ring on a door handle and it cut into my finger so deeply it needed to be cut off by a mechanic at the garage across the road.
Paper cut… on my eyeball. Child did it by accident. It was horrific! Needed anaesthetic drops for a few days.
Basketball hit me full in the mouth…whilst I had a whistle in it…lost two teeth. The cost of getting them replaced was the real shock of the whole ordeal. My savings took as much damage as my mouth did.
Last Friday of this half-term – college laptop trolly rolled into my 2 biggest toes on left foot. Same foot as plantar fasciitis & Achilles tendinitis issues. I didn’t use the ‘f’ word as student was with me.
Hypermobility + a few months of sitting on tiny children’s chairs caused lower-back go into semi-permanent spasm. Had to ask for adult chair Policy was for child-centred classrooms with no adult desk or chairs- teachers to be ‘working with group or individuals at all times’ Was told ‘If we give a teacher a chair, the problem with that is that they will sit down and not get up from it’ So, the ideal was for T[eacher] to stand or kneel near a table, or sit on a child’s chair, or sit on the floor.
As new H[ead]T[eacher], went to U[pper]K[ey]S[tage]2 Xmas party, vaulted over bench to leave hall and removed 4 square inches of skin from bald head on door frame. Was away at a meeting with the L.A. the next day, by the evening local rumours were that I was in hospital with head injuries
1) Staple in my finger. 2) Banged my knee a few times.3) Catching my arm on door handles.4) Heart attack.5) Trapping my finger in a drawer.
1) got tangled in cables like a giant fly in a spider web 2) slipped down a muddy slope in front of the entire school while on bus duty. Massive bruising and huge embarrassment both times. Although a kind Year 11 helped me up out of the mud & didn’t laugh while the other 1499 students pissed themselves.
nearly lost my left hand in a horrendous accident on school trip! 10 ops later it’s as good as it will be. there’s the proof. …had hold of the seat in front as the coach rolled and then slid down m6… window broke…. Had to have it stitched into my stomach for 4 weeks for a flap to cover I know even I gulped when the doc suggested it! I was a ‘little teapot for a month. it was a nightmare!! They needed the blood vessels to join… 9 hour op too! I should add the NUT were fab … Their solicitor was superb
Slipped a disc lifting student into water ambulance during school trip to Venice. Contracted TB (possibly not at school, but sounds good).
I was hit by falling scaffolding once.
Grade 3 tear of gastrocnemius. Happened on sports day. Exactly coincided with pistol to start 100 m[e]t[re]s. I thought I had been shot. True story.
Broke a burette off in my thumb last year and severed a nerve. Still no feeling in it.
Definitely a student moving chair onto foot whilst sat on it
Concussion- could see children messing around for TA & glared at them-ch[ildre]n stopped- missed footing on last 5 steps…cue pratfall/f[ore]w[ar]d roll
Exhausted by overworking and unreasonable demands, I completely missed a step and fell down stairs. Thought “Didn’t get a degree for this”.
Pulled my back celebrating a spectacular comeback by the Y[ear] 8 football team was coaching back in the day. Took 3 month’s chiropractic to sort.
Missed a step covered in a drift of leaves & fell full length.Usual hilarity from students tempered by fact that I was 8 months pregnant.
Broke a finger attempting to stop a rugby ball from hitting a spectator. Still hit her, but on the back rather than on the head.
Crashed my motorcycle on the way to school. Still got in. My form saw the blood on my leg. Got ambulance. Came back from hospital to teach.
Ruptured my thigh muscle taking a penalty against a year 7 on lunch duty. Went top corner though so not all bad [this was from my former form tutor, but I’m assuming I’m not implicated as it was “1st year” not “year 7” back then]
Prolapsed disk when the caretaker used the wrong polish on the floor turning it into a skating rink!
Husband snapped achilles tendon, teaching football on astros…
Temporarily blinded as lid came off the copydex mid shake. Shouted “Shit!” loudly which shocked kids more than my eyes covered in glue.
Spine surgery from writing too many schemes of work without good back support. I took on a dept[artment] in 2nd y[ea]r of career, managed all of SLT and there was nothing. Had an op in 2009 and learned a lot about life in that year!
Accidental broken toe. Me vs. heavy box of music stands. Helpful child said ‘you can swear if you like miss – looked like it hurt’. It did.
I scraped my shin and badly injured my pride falling-off a chair balanced on a table, as I put up a display… as a class quietly worked… and I dislocated my knee in a Staff Vs Parents hockey match.
Almost broke fingers and arm, grassboarding down a slope on y[ea]r 7 activity holiday session!
being bitten. Also having a chair leg land on my foot (sandals
Molten jelly baby flew out of boiling tube onto my hand during open evening demo. I kept smiling
Sort of injury, kidney stones from not drinking enough water during school day. Agony for 2 days. Now I know opioids REALLY work.
slipped on a wet corridor and broke a finger pride also suffered considerable injury. After year 11 stopped convulsing with laughter following my very slapstick slip they did show great concern and sympathy
Sewed through my finger on a sewing machine whilst helping Year 11. Just about managed not to bleed on her coursework!
Ice skating lesson with a school group in 1988 & stuck the rear right boot spike through my left boot. Stab wound & 2 broken bones in foot!
Fractured my arm after falling off a ladder putting Christmas dec[oration]s up or scalded my foot after dropping an urn of hot water.
Electric shocks from various electricity experiments, and falling over and hurting my thumb.
Ran a ski trip to Italy and chair lift bar fell on my head, lots of blood and was taken down the slope in the blood-wagon. Tried to walk through a swing door which was normally well oiled, unfortunately this time it wasn’t and I went head first into the glass!
Stitches in a finger due to a stubborn classroom locker. Expletives were used. Entire Year 4 class were shocked. Hospital swiftly attended.
cracked patella jumping rope with 3rd graders
Mild concussion. Projector screen fell from roof hit me on head.
A bruised backside when I slipped on ice taking Tutor group to Xmas carol service. They kindly picked me up.
Slipped a disc standing up from my chair whilst teaching a PSHE lesson. Needed [other teachers] to carry me away from class!!
Fell off a table whilst putting up a display. Did my knee good and proper
I stapled my finger when putting up a display. Ive also caught thousands of colds (but that’s illness not injury).
My funniest injury at sch[ool]: stapled my fingers together whilst holding a stapler & teaching.
Electric shock off a whiteboard…it certainly made me jump!!
Torn my knee ligaments jumping on a trampoline
During my PGCE I dislocated my shoulder from stopping a pass in a lunchtime basketball game.
Fractured my humerus, two ribs and cut my eyebrow… I fell
Trapped arm in a door while restraining a student (Special needs School) [went to] A&E
Regularly I have bruises mid thigh from walking into tables
I slipped in the dining hall on a sausage and did a strange somersault, a plate crashed to the floor bounced up & and sliced open my cheek
Tripped up stairs on the way to a lesson, laptop went flying, smashed my head on the handrail, knocked myself out, in front of students
Punched in the temple by a y[ear] 8 boy. Headbutted (didn’t connect) by an angry y[ear] 11. Wallet nicked by a y[ear] 11 that I had spent hours supporting.
Lice, scabies and flea bites. All in a days work. Oh yes. And a tub of black powder paint with no lid, fell off a shelf on my head. Scary sight.
Torn [anterior cruciate ligament] in right knee whilst separating two Year 9 boys fighting!
Once thought it good idea to remove OHP bulb immediately after it blew. Fingerprints returned after a few months
I ripped a muscle in my lower back moving a filing cabinet. Had waited for the site agent for 5 days and got tired of waiting. won’t make the mistake again, will just wait nicely!
Bumped into a table (fixed to the floor). Bruise on my thigh is about 10 cm long, 5 cm high. Done this almost every month, for 20 y[ears].
Broke a tooth on school pitta bread…
Dropped a recycling bin on my foot and lost a toenail.
Got slapped around the face and then kicked twice one morning.
Burnt most of my hand when I didn’t use a long enough fuse for a flash powder demonstration
I fell off my bike in front of the main entrance, causing moderate but prolonged reputational damage.
Put a staple through my finger while putting up a display.
Badly cut knee and ripped suit after attempting to show Y[ear] 6 boys, playing football on the playground, ‘how it’s done’.
Took an “accidentally released” rounders bat to the gentleman’s area. If I wasn’t the recipient it would have been funny.
Partially tore ligaments while mucking about being a wolf in the playground
Tripped on cracked car park tarmac, burst knee wide open. Lots of stitches
I broke my foot at 7am at school on a dodgy paving slab and then walked around on it for the rest of the day before getting an X-ray. I also once dropped molten hot sulfur on my hand while doing a demo, had to teach the rest of my lesson with my hand in a bowl of cold water
Fell 2 steps walking down unlit stairs and twisted ankle. Had an xray and 2 days off work.
Cut my finger open whilst shutting a toilet door I spotted was ajar. Kid in my class provided me with loo roll from his bag that he kept there with a torch in case he needed to go for a poo in the dark! Not sure which event was the weirdest.
Fell off a chair doing a display- Huge bruise black on arm…despite just saying to students always use a chair for its intended purpose!
I broke my ankle in the middle of one of my [physical education] classes.
Broke bone in coccyx. Also got pneumonia from sewage has when basement flooded. Illness rather than injury really.
My eye got cut from a student’s nail when playing basketball with them. Lost a high % of peripheral vision in my right eye.
I’ve suffered a cut lip when a child I was sitting next to shot his hand up a little enthusiastically. Still think he did it on purpose
There have been a couple of reasonably serious injuries in the staff-sixth form football. Not to me though.
Banging my head – It’s not easy being a giant.
[From a school business manager] There was the time I was walking along a corridor & a teacher opened an outward opening door & pole-axed me. They were mortified..
Got punched by a parent, but wasn’t injured, and in retrospect she was probably in the right. Who was I to tell her son to tuck in his shirt?
Shut the filing cabinet in my classroom and trapped my nipple in it. No idea how I managed that..

King of the Mods: May Update
Roster analysis, summary of season to date, projected plans:
C: Jason Casto, Gary Sanchez on the DL - Castro is operating merely as a stopgap during Sanchez’s injury, and he’s doing so quite poorly. When I did my draft preparation, I only mocked out the 13 catchers I valued as draftable, given there were 13 teams. Subsequently, I was surprised that when the season began, multiple teams spend backup roster spots on 2nd catchers. This has left the waiver wire for catchers depressingly thing, however, it has allowed me to pick up multiple bench bats that likely would not have been available in similar 13-team leagues. But we’ll explore that in a bit. As for now, I’m greatly looking forward to Sanchez’s probable return from the DL this week.
1B: Edwin Encarnación, Albert Pujols - Ostensibly, this position would be manned daily by Edwin Encarnacion, however, he has been off to a meager 9/1/9/1/.200 start. EE fell to me as pick 35 in the draft, but it’s easy to see why some layed off the aging slugger type. Pujols was drafted for the same reason. He fell multiple rounds beyond his ADP, seemed like a good value, however, has hit only 7/3/22/0/.231. He has at least been above average in RBIs to date, ranking 4th among 1B eligible hitters. This position probably requires an upgrade somewhere down the line.
2B: Trea Turner, César Hernández - Turner was my 1st round pick, and after a short DL stint, has rocketed back to a 15/2/13/4/.317 line that would look decent even without his injury. Turner’s value will take a slight hit as Adam Eaton’s season ending ACL tear will result in Turner batting leadoff instead of second. While this will cut into his RBIs, hopefully it should trade off with more SBs. We shall see, but early returns suggest my modest reach in the 1st round will pay off. Hernandez was a waiver-wire replacement during the Turner injury, but has been too good to just drop upon Turner’s return. He’s rocking a solid 20/4/10/3/.323 line that has him as the 44th ranked player overall so far. And while his batting average likely won’t stay so far north of .300, I intend to keep running him out daily until the falloff occurs.
3B: Alex Bregman, Joey Gallo, Nick Castellanos - Oooof. This one hurts. Bregman has been a disaster in April, hitting 6/0/6/2/.250. He’s been dropped to 9th (!!!) in the batting order and has looked awful doing so. One of my big decisions during the draft was knowing I’d be hoping for one of the breakout 3B, then grabbing Bregman because I was worried Jake Lamb would be drafted out from under me. It doesn’t really help the ol’ ego that Lamb has been outstanding during April. As a result, I’ve made two roster moves to try to bring in help. The last week of April, I picked up Joey Gallo, who despite his batting average, has been the 54th best player in April. Gallo has been replacing an injury Adrian Beltre for the Rangers, and it looks like Beltre’s absence will continue for the time being, meaning Gallo will stay on my active roster as well. As of this morning, I won a waiver claim for Nick Castellanos, who has a decent line of 15/3/14/0/.245, however, his underlying statistics suggest a rise in batting average. The Tigers have still been hitting him 3rd in their lineup, so if his average does increase, his counting stats should ride shotgun. If not, he didn’t really cost me anything except league legend Stephen Piscotty.
SS: Corey Seager, Chris Owings - If my 3B has been an ER toxic waste spill, SS has been unlimited free cream soda. The shortstop position has been an overall drain throughout fantasy baseball. Only 4 SS-eligible players finished April in the top 125 overall, and with Turner switching positions, I have 3 of ‘em. Owings was an early waiver add, not for position (he’s also OF eligible), but because he was producing fantastic results. While Owings probably won’t keep up his 30ish, HR pace, the Diamondbacks have taken an extremely free love position regarding stolen bases, so his 7 swipes so far don’t seem like an anomaly. Corey Seager remains a delight to own as he basically scores a run, picks up an RBI, or hits a HR seemingly every day, all while showing every consistency of a true .300 hitter. Fantasy baseball can be a serious grind with lots of ups and downs and I love having a player who fills out part of the stat sheet every time I check it. This position is set for the foreseeable future.
OF: Carlos Gonzalez, Adam Duvall, Steven Souza - Speaking of ups and downs, OF has been acceptable if slightly frustrating. Duvall personifies the grind of fantasy in that while there do seem to be a lot of 0/4 days, he finishes April ranked 55th with a line of 16/7/17/2/.247. I expect him to basically just repeat that, rarely a little more or more often a little less, each month from here on out. Steven Souza was another early wire move that has produced and is showing few signs of slowing. He’s hitting 14/4/17/0/.330 and while he has bounced between leadoff and 5th in the lineup (depending on pitching matchups), his position on the team is secure. I have to give credit to si.com for suggesting Souza as a post-hype breakout and providing that “credible expert” juice that convinces me to roster/keep him. Carlos Gonzalez was the third in my trio of players in the “I drafted them despite not really planning to because they slipped noticeably, but they’re kind of old and they were all disappointing in the first month, so maybe every one else is smarter than I am” category. Ah that category, a classic fantasy baseball trope I’m sure all are familiar with. Anyway, Gonzalez has looked pretty lame in the otherwise above-average Rockies offense. Hopefully he won’t be traded and he can start getting in on that sweet sweet Coors action.
SP: Stephen Strasburg, Danny Duffy, Michael Pineda, Danny Salazar, Vince Velasquez - My SP strategy is usually based on K/9 and K/BB ratio. It’s usually my experience that those stats best predicts fantasy success. It isn’t really killing it for me yet. I finish April in 11th place for ERA and 9th for WHIP. Strasburg, Duffy, and Pineda have performed to expectations so far. Strasburg has been a little unlucky with his W-L record given the Nats offense, and I don’t expect any runs support for Duffy whatsoever. Pineda has been a K/BB monster and I’m really counting on his long-awaited breakout to continue. I’m nervous regarding his start this week against the Cubs, but this is the kind of game you expect an excellent pitcher to be able to manage. Salazar and Velasquez have been frustrating owns, but have too many underlying advanced metrics to give up on quite yet. Maybe I won’t live to regret it, but I intend to keep running them out there for all their starts. However, if I see one more article on how Salazar is a secret ace, I might have to burn down the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame. Actually, I should probably come up with a punishment for each city if these guys don’t stop giving up HRs. Maybe that’s the counterpoint to guys who throw a lot of strikes and miss a lot of bats. When they get hit, they get hit hard. Vince Velasquez, the Liberty Bell’s fate rests with you.
RP: Neftali Feliz, Hector Neris, Matt Bush, Santiago Casilla - My makeshift RP crew will mostly pass without comment. I’m unsure if any will finish the season as closers, but all have the ability and opportunity to do so. We shall see. That’s really what I should rename this team. Getting back into fantasy baseball can be tricky. Sometimes you gotta grab the guys who seem like they’ll succeed and just wait and see.
Current Standings:
Runs - 109. Tied for 9th. League leader: 133
HRs - 29. Tied for 8th. LL: 39
RBIs - 112. 5th. LL: 120
SBs - 18. 5th. LL: 31
Average - .234. Last. LL: .292
Wins - 14. 2nd. LL: 15
Saves - 13. Tied for 5th. LL: 25
Ks - 227. 1st (Yay).
ERA - 4.19. 11th. LL: 2.65
WHIP - 1.25. 9th. LL:1.05
Projected Plans: I intend to try to stay active on the waiver wire (I’m tied for the 3rd most roster moves to date), however, usually by about now most hitters that are going to be playable long-term have been picked up. I’ll try to keep an eye on pitchers, but I’m usually much more hesitant to give up on a starter than most, often to my detriment. I really have no idea how willing teams are to trade in this league, but I feel like I have to try to leverage my SS position at some point. If all 3 keep up the elite production, I’ll attempt to upgrade my 1B or potentially OF. As always, We Shall See.
