i think one of my spiciest takes is that i think cis people should be cis on purpose and not because it’s the “default”

ok hear me out before you go into the notes, i have reasons.

the main idea is that i think EVERYONE should explore and interrogate their gender identity and what their gender truly means to them. because 1) i don’t think any harm will ever come from wanting to understand yourself and your existence on a deeper level and 2) if everyone, including cis people, explored their gender it would be more generally accepted. thus, trans people or people questioning their transness wouldn’t be as othered when they start questioning and exploring their gender.

because here’s the deal. every trans person i know can tell you what their gender means. they can tell you what it means to be a man or a woman or neither or both or some other nebulous concept. they can describe it to you and explain it to you. they can tell you what their manhood or womanhood or neitherhood means to them, what it represents, how they knew that’s who they were.

every trans person i know (including myself) can articulate what their gender is in more words than “well i’m *insert gender* because i’m *insert gender*” (yes i know i’m always saying i can’t be bothered with gender but i do actually have a lot of feelings and words on my own)

i’ve talked to a lot of cis people about gender and they just simply can’t explain to me what womanhood or manhood is to them. so often it’s “well i’m a man cuz i’m a man. i look like a man i act like a man etc etc.” but what does a man look like? what does a man act like? and it’s usually people who consider themselves trans allies saying these things!

people should explore their gender. they should understand it more deeply. i don’t say “explore your gender” as a way to try and force anyone into a realization of transness, i say it because i want people to understand their gender. whether that be cis or trans or whatever.

to understand yourself more deeply is to understand your place in the world more accurately. learning more about who you are, and why you are, and how you are never hurts in the long run.

so yeah. be cis on purpose, be cis because you know deeply that you are cis, because you understand what that means to you.

and be trans on purpose. use the labels you like deliberately. dress in the way that brings you euphoria and mitigates dysphoria because you deserve that.

simply be on purpose. walk through life with deliberate steps, with solidified intent. because without doing so, how can we find our purpose on this earth and in this life?

i LOVE making aus with a target audience of one person (1) by blendering two of my current interests together. this truly was our despair time.

everyone except mai's "sprites" are drawn based on official sprites, and they're meant to be height accurate! or, uh, a valiant attempt was made. at the very least i got to practice drawing everyone 🎉

(complete but constantly changing AU & character notes under cut: LOTS and i mean LOTS of yapping down there. spoilers up to chapter 2 and literature girl insane MV. content warning for "standard danganronpa stuff"; the hidden text in here is about the same level as drdt's hidden tumblr page quotes)

first up is a quick crash course on limbus company! that being said, i don't think i explained myself well at all, so i recommend just checking out the official website. or straight up playing it. i'm happy to answer any and all questions, though, whether here or in my limbus-centric main (@iamjustagremlin)!

and now here are the character notes. i have a Lot to say.

one more minor thing i'm 99% sure forgot to include and am too lazy to fix: the canon sinners are each assigned a color code and a cool descriptor (it doesn't even need to be an adjective. cool factor always wins), such as "oblivion yellow", "dreamy gray", and "inferno red". my brain won't let me tackle these yet, but my first attempt for xander was "courageous crimson", and my first attempt for teruko was "cursed clover".

taking most of this from a late night ramble i did: if skybound sucked less and was actually intended to be about how societal norms on m/f relationships can negatively impact people, it could be like utena. just barely. skybound also has some stage play vibes, which ties into revolutionary girl utena's whole deal.

even though jay wants to say that he has no power over nya and he just likes her, he still participates in a system that has power over nya and nya is kind of just taken along with it. this can be about fate in ninjago or about society or about gender or what have you. jay also likes the idea of saving nya.

"all girls are like the rose bride in the end" ties into nya being a bride. nadakhan wanted a bride, and he kind of fits akio's role well enough in terms of manipulation and general creepiness. the rose bride is engaged to a duelist and the duelist has power over her. additionally, nya is 'fated' to be with jay, and nya is tied to her role as 'the girl ninja'. her roles as an accessory to a man overshadow her inherent worth as a person sometimes.

skybound as a season only 'resolves' itself when jay shows genuine empathy beyond the parameters of a normal m/f couple. nya finds empowerment when she's standing up to nadakhan and being the prince in this situation- or at the very least, deciding on her own terms that she wants a prince to help her.

if i really wanted to i could contrast the old guard 2020 and diabolik 2021 as comic book adaptations and the different ways they approach both adapting their source material i.e. diabolik as an adaptation is both paying homage to its source material constantly and regularly reminding you that it is a comic book adaptation whereas the old guard is more trying to make a regular action movie based on a comic book, drawing occasional visual parallels that won't be recognisable unless the viewer is familiar with the source material. both are also adapting the story in some way for film, but diabolik stays much more strictly to the book it's adapting while the old guard makes a lot of changes (afaik there's almost nothing from the comics verbatim) but keeps the core of the story and essential scenes in. something interesting there about diabolik reminding us of the series' origin as comics probably due to a) its long-running history and b) cultural icon status (source: me and my powerpoint) vs the old guard falling into what i might call the current style of comic book adaptation where the focus is on appealing to a wide audience, comics fans or not, to the point where you might not even know it's based on a comic outside of marketing. but also essentially i think a comic book adaptation should match the tone of its original, which they both do: the old guard is a darker, more serious, more "adult" comic, and so it follows that the adaptation largely follows that tone (save for one or two parts that to me feel very recognisably comic book style), whereas diabolik is, albeit technically also for adults, a different genre / tone. and then there's something else to be said there in the evolution of comics considered adult, e.g. diabolik considered adult in the context of its first publishing because it contained crime and killing but generally becoming considered one of the more tame examples of the subgenre it spawned, vs the old guard being adult in terms of current standards via depicting sex / nudity / swearing / violence far beyond the scope of diabolik, which is pretty much unchanged. anyway these two things are not really connected beyond "both being comic book movie adaptations released in the 2020s featuring notable italian luca marinelli in a somewhat major role as a character who says vaguely ominous things and largely emotes through microexpressions" but it's fun to think about sometimes

one day i want to make a really in-depth post about the film posters on tao's wall but for now i just wanna point out that the in the mood for love poster was NOT there in season 1 and that film is notoriously about falling in love and the pain of loss... jesus christ tao that's the one thing you're sensitive about

so i was rereading my stuff (as i often do lol) and came across one of my absolute favourite things i’ve ever written.

“it is my life’s biggest regret that it was my actions and my mistake that led to james’ death, to both their deaths. they were…the last people on earth who should’ve died so young. james and lily had so much life in them, so much left to give. and i will never forgive myself for the part i played in ending that light. i know i don’t deserve your forgiveness but i’m so sorry, baby.”

and despite sirius’ attempts to stem the tears, they spilled over anyway, and gosh, it ached to see this strong, proud man break down in front of him like this. harry didn’t think sirius deserved to feel this way, but he also knew a thing or two about (irrational) guilt and he knew it was an insidious, poisonous thing that crawled up your body, slowly killing you from the inside out. sirius had been carrying this inside him for a decade and a half, and he was only now letting himself feel the grief and the guilt and the loss, letting himself mourn properly. (and wasn't harry humbled at the thought that sirius considered him trustworthy enough to break down in his arms? it was frightening, the knowledge that he quite literally held his godfathers heart in his hands right now, because who was he kidding, he was the last potter left now who could grant him his absolution)
