Playing with the idea of the phoenix witch being like.. this wandering knight. A saint but not a diety. Very much a killjoy very much a living person as opposed to more how she is in canon but mysterious enough and like. Devoted to the desert enough that even if she was to die like. She wouldn’t really. Whether that be through how the stories and tall tales of her won’t die or whether that be though yeah she dies but like. Bro I swear I saw her behind tommy chow mein’s a couple days ago sure she like was gone when I blinked but she’s always done that it’s nothing new.

Like she’s just a killjoy and everyone has seen or met her at some point she’s literally just a dude but she’s always seen so in passing she’s become more of an urban legend than anything. Part of it is because she’s been around for so long she’s dr d’s age which most younger killjoys equates to old as dirt. Dr D is kind of a cryptid too but in the sense of how the fuck does he know everything that happens what the heck dude he’s like creepy if you think about it. But he’s just like the zones collective dad and everyone knows him bc of the radio the Witch meanwhile is That One Person you always see at the grocery store that you think is super cool because they always have different hair and fancy ass outfits but then you look at their cart and see they’ve bought out the stores entire supply of butter or something and it kind of scares you. And you like make a comment to your cashier when you check out and they casually drop some insane lore like yeah she does that a lot I hear she’s like the top axe thrower on the world?? yeah idk what the butter has to do with that tho. Like I said. The community cryptid.

Anyway. Wandering knight. Like literally she wanders and looks like a knight. A postapocalyptic joan of arc. She has this dark dragging cloak made of vulture feathers. Im thinking of giving her a crested helmet or a gas mask(cause also playing with the idea of mashing her design up with mother war’s) or some strange looking mix of the two. She has combat boots and then like. A spear. I love her.

5 Years of Aloy

Continuing my character appreciation series, it's time we turned to Aloy.

August 2018. Pretty sure these were my first sketches of her.

I started Horizon Zero Dawn in May 2018 – I can always remember, because it was very appropriately Mother's Day. I think it was the first open world game I'd ever played, and I just found the whole universe to be so engrossing – a mix of postapocalyptic sci fi, the Iron Age, and cavemen vs dinosaurs.

But of course Aloy herself was a big part of the appeal. Can I relate to her? No, I'm not a genius prodigy with no friends. But I can admire Aloy – her smarts, her bravery, her utter fed-up-edness. She's always fun to follow alongside as a protagonist.

January 2019

Playing HZD fell around the same time I decided I wanted to get back to posting online regularly again. This 1/19 picture was one of the first things I posted. I was so surprised and pleased when Guerilla Games reblogged/favorited it on Tumblr and DeviantArt.

So I associate Aloy and HZD with a pretty positive time in my life.

October 2019 (Aloy on an original unicorn machine, because why shouldn't we have unicorns in the postapocalypse?)

And one thing I especially liked about Forbidden West is that it highlighted Aloy's faults. There were times in Zero Dawn where things came so easily to Aloy and it felt like she was always unilaterally in the right, the one sane person in the universe. Forbidden West showed that she was far from perfect, and I welcomed that.

Aloy is generous, self-sacrificial but still aware of her own worth; powerful, driven, and always planning ahead. But she's emotionally short-sighted, inflexible at times, and I think she could actually be cruel under the right circumstances. As with Elisabet, her altruism is a love that “bruises”.

She's intriguing and inspiring, so it comes as no surprise that I ended up drawing her a fair bit, especially given the fandom still felt so new and vibrant.

Drawing Aloy presents a number of consistent challenges for me. First of all, she's based on a real person. That makes it a lot harder for me to fall back on stylistic shortcuts. Even if I'm not a realistic artist, I still want to catch something of the “soul” of the actor and leave her recognizable.

For another, all of Aloy's costumes are intricate. Sometimes I use references, but more often I'll put her in an outfit of my own design, throwing in elements from the different in-game tribes – as I think people would really do, if these cultures really existed. And certainly something that I think “Aloy Despite the Nora” would do.

February 2021

The designers at GG once congratulated themselves that one of Aloy's virtues is that she doesn't care about stereotypically “feminine” things like make up and clothes and jewelry. Along with that just being a bad take on a number of fronts, I've never believed it. The evidence doesn't bear it out.

June 2021 (I think this was right around the Forbidden West trailers started showing up)

The games themselves show Aloy wearing excessive jewelry and make up, tons of different outfits, being totally maximalist with her beads and layers and dinosaurish headdresses and now body paint on top of everything else (or under everything else). Is her appearance the most important thing in her life? No. Because she's currently saving the world. But it's clear she cares about her appearance and there's nothing wrong with that.

December 2021

Moving forward into Burning Shores (which I haven't played yet) and Horizon 3 (which I'm eagerly awaiting news on), I don't know what my specific hopes for Aloy are.

February 2022 (and then Forbidden West finally came out)

I want to see her remained flawed, but then I also want to see her grow. I'd to see her grow happier, whatever form that takes.

April 2022

Maybe a stress-free vacation sometime? I'd say the beach, but bad things happen when she goes to the beach.

May 2023

Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

Im currently in the middle of a rewatch of all the resident evil movies and they are so much worse than I remembered them being. When i first watched them, i was around 16 to 18 and holy shit i was so much less critical of the media i consumed back then. In my original experience i was just happy that there was swearwords included and that the horror/action mix was somewhat well executed. I klnow came to find out that i cant watch them as "serious" movies anymore. They are so over the top and kinda just seem like they were made up as they went along making them. I mean of course they would appeal to a 16 year old that wont question any of the films logic/coherency.

On a more positive note: the 2000s outfits fucking SLAP. Like Alice is kinda constantly serving if you can manage to look past the rather obvious role of her as the films sexappeal impersonation. Like especially the third one goes all the way in terms of postapocalyptic desert/mid 2000s crossover fashion. The pussyslaypopvaginaqueenbitchboss energy is immeasurable.

Anja LivingDreadDoll Inspired by my latest obsession with Cyberpunk art.  VampireFreaks I want something off my mind.  If you follow me for a while, you know I love to add colours to my style. That brings me to VampireFreaks (VF). Vampire what? An alternative social media website that was once really populair amongst us spooky children!.. And died a slow death. But I loved VF!   Lately I get messages from you guys, saying you recognize me from the VF days and still follow me around! It warms my dead little heart.  And it got me thinking how much I miss a social media page where you can really connect and chat with like minded people, and it’s not all about “the pictures”, “followers” or the “how many likes did you get”. I met so many people irl in my VF time.  I know Facebook and insta got a chat option, but if you are from VF generation, you know that’s not the same, I miss the cults. Once in a while I find a nice community on facebook, but it’s very chaotic in my opinion, and hard to keep track of the conversations.  That’s it. Feeling nostalgic I guess and with the lockdown crap I miss talking to all kind of people about all kind of things.  Back to this picture I’m working on a few new outfits. I just discovered working with latex, so that’s going to be a lot of fun. Also I hate wearing white clothing, so to step out of my comfort zone, I’m making a light coloured outfit.  The only time I wore a white crop top was with my tank girl cosplay. I’m  working on a few other idea’s. But with no event in sight, it is hard to stay motivated. So to stay motivated, we’ve bought some new equipment. And to see the first results of that, see my previous post. -------------
