A CANTICLE FOR LEIBOWITZ by Walter M. Miller. (New York: Lippincot, 1959) Cover art by M. Glasser. First edition was issued with a paper banner from publisher.
‘A Canticle for Leibowitz is a post-apocalyptic social science fiction novel by American writer Walter M. Miller Jr., first published in 1959. Set in a Catholic monastery in the desert of the southwestern United States after a devastating nuclear war, the book spans thousands of years as civilization rebuilds itself. The monks of the Albertian Order of Leibowitz preserve the surviving remnants of man's scientific knowledge until the world is again ready for it.
The novel is an amalgamation of three short stories Miller had originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction [April 1955-February 1957], inspired by the author's participation in the bombing of a monastery at the Battle of Monte Cassino during World War II. The book is considered one of the classics of science fiction and has never been out of print. Appealing to mainstream and genre critics and readers alike, it won the 1961 Hugo Award for best science fiction novel, and often appears on "best of" lists. It has been recognized three times with Locus Poll Awards for best all-time science fiction novel. Its themes of religion, recurrence, and church versus state have generated a significant body of scholarly research.’

Stella of Vault 21: 1, The Sea of Sand.
A girl roams the endless sea of sand in search of food, water, shelter, anything. As the sun sets she begins to become more and more hopeless she drinks the last of the purified water as she crawls under a rock outcropping. She misses it, her family, her friends, her home. She remembers how her family would roll dice every night to see who got the extra food ration. Her first job was at the general store. Her Nuka Cola Collection at this point she tried to stop herself from crying to prevent herself from getting dehydrated but she couldn't. She soon fell asleep.
Waking up sometime later she realizes in the alcove is a door, this door leading to a vault entrance, Vault 11. Hoping someone is inside she activates the intercom. "Hello," she says "Is anyone in there" "I'm from Vault 21 please answer" Nothing She asks once again but no response so out of desperation she loads up her Pipboy 3000 and opens the door. With a loud screech of rusted metal and steel, the door opens. She cringes back trying to cover her ears. Now open she realizes something is off. Roy Kaplan is here!
Yes, you heard me right, Roy Kaplan: Out of Sight is finally ready for launch, complete with a proper (and actually correct) release date: December 28, 2024. I did say that I was going to get this ready for launch by the end of the year!
If you don't know what Roy Kaplan (or Roy Kaplan, Private Investigator if you prefer) is, it's a paranormal cyberpunk detective audio drama taking place in a (very low-key) post-apocalyptic future. It features the titular Roy Kaplan--private investigator, ex-burglar, and psychic--as he puts his wits to the test to solve all kinds of cases with the occasional assist from his ghost roommate, Wes. Stylistically, it draws significant inspiration from old time radio shows such as Richard Diamond and hardboiled detective fiction of the 1930s-50s.
This first season, Out of Sight, consists of twelve all-original mysteries, each 30-40 minutes long. It will be releasing on Saturdays every two weeks, with Patreon supporters able to hear episodes a week early.
Roy Kaplan is hosted on Pinecast, which means you should be able to listen to it on any podcast aggregator that supports RSS feeds. It'll also be available on common podcast apps like Spotify and Amazon Podcasts (right now Apple Music is having some hiccups, so we'll see what happens with that). It's also available on YouTube, if you like getting your podcasts through there.
Alternately, you can listen directly in your browser at my website, where you will also find the full voice credits and transcripts and writer's commentary blog posts if you're into that sort of thing. You can subscribe to my newsletter if you'd like to get notified of Out of Sight updates directly in your email.
I will have more to say about the show (about things like how to support production and whether season 2 will happen) but for now, season 1 is cooking and it's nearly ready to serve!
If you want more information about Roy Kaplan, the best place for information is the main page on my website, which will have all the links to everything else.
(For the trailer credits and transcript, that is also on my website.)
Happy listening, and I'll see you on the other side!

—
It had been weeks since you last saw him. You felt bad, you really did- you just couldn't bring yourself to love him and then lose him like you did with everyone else. This world was so cruel to you, you didn't want it to be any crueler. Not anymore. You had been through so much in the last few years, that you were now holding on with a thread, and the thread was thinning out even more. You didn’t tell him that you didn’t want to be with him, no, you told him that you just needed time to- think it through. He seemed more than happy with the decision when it happened, it just (sort of) backfired after.
You found out it had gotten bad after you talked with Ellie last. Over the period of time you two were together, you grew closer to her - she trusted you, and you trusted her. Ellie had told you that Joel was always locked in his room, other than when he had work. He would skip meals every so often, but it was something that didn’t bug her (it bugged you, though). After she had told you all of this, she made you swear under the non-existent god (her words, not yours) that you would never tell Joel. You promised, of course, but this made you nothing short but scared, scared for him.
You and Joel worked together, that was how you met in the first place. You were both on the more-experienced end of the patrollers unit throughout Jackson, and often went outside of the walls together. That had changed, though. A few days after you had loosened (not ended) the ties with Joel, you had been assigned to a new sub-unit by Tommy Miller (Joel’s younger brother), one that wouldn’t intertwine with Joel’s at all. You weren’t sure if he had said something (you really hoped he hadn’t, you couldn’t deal with any pre-apocalyptic drama anymore), or if it was just the world doing you guys a solid.
You were close with Tommy’s wife, Maria, so you had somehow convinced her to let you take a small trip outside the walls by yourself, to scavenge for supplies and what not. You told her you knew the outside area like the back of your hand, and you weren’t all wrong. It was just- well, you didn’t know it off the top of your head, you knew it through a map (that was something you’d never tell Maria, though). She made you promise her that you would radio her if anything went down while you were out, anything ranging from getting lost to coming across unfamiliar people. That’s where you found yourself right now.
You left the walls two days ago, and now you were lost. You had lost your map after having to kill a clicker late the night before, and couldn’t find it no matter how hard you looked. Though, you only looked for about an hour- you had to get out of the area quickly, because if there was one clicker, there was bound to be others. You now found yourself in the living room of a house you had cleared out earlier in the day, praying to whoever was above that someone would answer the radio call.
“This is- it’s me, Maria,” Your hand was holding down the side button, as a sigh was heard across this station, “I’m lost, I should’ve listened, my coordinates are-” You had listed off the rough points, admitting defeat. Maybe this was the universe’s way of telling you that you needed to move on and start off fresh. Hell, you thought to yourself, this was a damn good way of Mother Nature telling you to leave those people behind, if that was her goal. You waited a moment before flipping through the channels, having absolutely nothing else to do but this. It was still radio silence throughout all of the twenty-some odd channels. You decided to give yourself an ultimatum, if no signs were shown by the morning, you’d move on for the better.
You had fallen asleep not long after you gave yourself the ultimatum. You only realized that after your brain woke itself up god knows how long after. Your body was nowhere near waking up, this had to have been the best sleep you had gotten in weeks, after everything that happened with Joel. You weren’t a cliche person, no way. But, you knew you hurt Joel, even if he refused to show it ever. You felt like shit for doing it, you really did, but maybe he would’ve figured out that it was for the better (sooner or later, at least).
Speaking of figuring it out, you had figured that you better get up. It was probably around nine or so in the morning, and you had already slept in far too late. You shifted around on the floor, where your makeshift (not really) bed was, before you heard breathing. Not your breathing, no, but something- someone else. If you weren’t fully awake before, you sure as hell were now. You didn’t open your eyes, but you shifted once more, you had a pistol in your back pocket that you had to get out. As you tried your very best to shift as normal as one could in their sleep, you finally reached the pistol. You hand wrapped around the body, and finger hovering the trigger, before shooting up and ripping the pistol out of your pocket. Your eyes were translucent-like right now, which meant you weren’t able to see properly who was in front of you. It was only by the tone of the voice that gave the person away, “Now cowgirl, what’d I teach ya’ ‘bout pointin’ guns at people ya’ know?”
It was him, it was Joel Miller. With the gun still pointed at him, a million thoughts started to race through your head. Why was he here? How did he find out? How did he get here so fucking quick? Though, your thoughts were cut short when your pistol was ripped out of your right hand- and you just let it be. You rubbed your eyes, finally able to lay your eyes across the man in front of you. He looked like he had lost a bit of weight in his face, but his hair was still curly and untamed, his muscles still threatened to strip the seams out of his shirt, his eyes were still- no, you thought to yourself, you couldn’t and shouldn’t be thinking like this.
“You shouldn’t be here, Joel. Not after what happened.” You immediately shot up, not letting your eyes linger for a second longer. He was sat, leaning against the door frame into the kitchen. His rifle was resting against his knees, the safety on since he knew you wouldn’t do anything. “What? Just ‘cause we- doesn’t matter.” He muttered, “Ya’ called, and I came’n checked on my colleague.” A colleague? It shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did, when he said that. You had to ignore it and keep your guard high, it wasn’t like you if you didn’t.
“How the fuck did ya’ get the radio station? It was only for Maria.” You had gotten up, honestly just wanting to leave. Even after feeling like the shittiest person on earth for distancing yourself from Joel, you would’ve preferred anyone else to answer the call for help. As you made your way to the entrance of the kitchen, just beside to where Joel was sitting, he put his rifle up and covered your path. “Made ya’ somethin’ to eat, missy. Ya’ still eat y’ur eggs over easy?” This set you off, almost. Why was he being so nice to you, after everything you did to him?
You pushed your way through his rifle and into the kitchen, the smell of freshly cooked eggs, something you hadn’t smelled in god knows how long, came passing through your nose. Joel always treated you right, you didn’t deny that. You had heard the man in the other room getting up, so you quickly ripped off a piece of the over easy egg and shoved it in your mouth. He would’ve obviously seen you had taken a bite, but you wanted to hold onto the little bit of pride you had left. “Listen,” Joel had began as you turned to face him, he was leaning against the frame, “I’ain here to rehash anythin’, just wanted to make sure everythin’ was alright.”
It wasn’t before, but why did it feel like it was now? You shouldn’t have been feeling like that, you thought to yourself. You should be running away and pushing him farther away from you than before. “It is, you can- leave now.” You had hesitated, and your eyes fell from Joel’s. You couldn’t even look him in the face when you said it, you knew it was wrong. All you wanted to do was hug him and kiss him again, but the fear of attachment you had was lingering heavy right now. Joel noticed this, crossing his arms. He knew that you were bull-shitting him, and that everything wasn’t fine. He had been with you long enough to know when you were lying, and when you weren’t your usual self. “‘M sorry- ya’ know that, Sunshine.” He told you, one of the few times you had ever heard an apology escape the man’s lips. This had roped you into meeting his gaze again, your heart almost dropping.
Joel went to say something else, but you immediately cut him off. “Don’t you apologize. I was the one to- to push ya’ back.” You began, “It shouldn’t have happened and’m sorry for it- Jesus Christ Joel, you know I still love ya’.” There was different tones said to this, angry ones, sad ones, embarrassed ones. You knew, and Joel knew, that whatever you had done was to try and protect him, but no matter how much you pushed him back, you guys were meant to be no farther than three feet away from each other.
“There’s the girl I know, not some pistol whippin’ chick.” He had a rough smile playing against his face, he couldn’t help it. Joel, despite not showing it, had butterflies that were running through his stomach like crazy right now. You made him feel like that whenever you wear near him, and he hadn’t experienced that for twenty years. He unfolded his arms and rose one, signalling you in for a hug. You couldn’t help it, you immediately stepped forward and embraced the man that you had missed so dearly. Though the fear of attachment was still alive and well, you felt as if you could outrun it right now.
It felt like it was your first hug in years (in weeks, actually), and it felt so rewarding. Joel was praying (even though he wasn’t a religious man at all) that you would come around, and that you would love him again- like he loved you. Your head fit into the crook of his neck just like a puzzle piece, and he was happier than ever. “‘M sorry.” You repeated yourself once again, wanting to say so much more but just couldn’t find the words to. His hand fell to the bottom of your neck, “I know,” He began, “Now, go eat y’ur meal before I eat it for ya’.”
You had a small smile rise to your face as your arms dropped from Joel’s embrace. You had reached over and gotten the egg, ripping a piece off the edge of it. You turned back and turned your glances up (Joel had practically towered over you) to meet his eyes, bringing the piece of egg to his lips. As Joel took notice of what you were doing, he parted his lips in order to assist you. As your finger slipped into Joel’s mouth, he started to suck around your finger. It felt good, almost too good, in your opinion. He let out a small, raspy moan against the piece of you that was in his mouth.
He had let go after a moment, letting your hand fall back to the side of you. “Missed everythin’ ‘bout ya’.” He had started, tucking a piece of your hair behind your right ear. “‘Specially the late nights.” You knew what he was talking about, sex. Even though the world had gone to complete shit, people were still going to be people. “Before anythin’,” You had started, “Do ya’ wanna, I’dunno, get back at it?” You were bad with words, Joel knew that. But he also knew that you were hinting at continuing your relationship together. He didn’t want anything else, honestly. He missed waking up to you, going to bed with you, and everything in between. Joel wasn’t an emotional guy by any stretch of the way, but he tried to be more considerate when it came to the people he loved.
Joel had answered your question by leaning forward and placing his lips on top of yours. He was soft at the start, unsure on how you would take it. He was also hoping that this would give you an answer, instead of a verbal ‘I need you now’ one - thankfully, it did. It gave you a clear-as-fucking-day answer. You had parted your lips, allowing Joel to take control over the both of you while you two were catching up on the missed kisses from the last while. This is when he had started let his rough edges show, he slipped his tongue in and started to love on you more aggressively. He was still hesitant on how you were going to take it, but you reacted very positively (to his pleasure).
Joel became handsy first, his hands travelling from over your hips to under your shirt and unclipping your bra. He knew that you wanted it as much as he did right now, he could tell by the muffled moans that were escaping your lips against his. You were soon to follow suit, your hands moving from Joel’s chest, to his more southern regions. A grunt had escaped his lips when you began to undo his belt, and he removed your bra from under your shirt. This was the only person you had ever wanted to do anything like this with, Joel knew that. He felt the same way with you, he knew that you were delicate with him and his subconscious.
Now that things were finally figured out between the two of you, you could go back to loving Joel. You would deal with your fears at a later date, not now, not anytime soon. You had to focus on what you loved most, and it was the man right in front of you. Joel was glad you had come around, he didn’t know what he would’ve done if you didn’t. In this hell-bound world, you were one of the few things that really mattered to him. Everyone goes through their hardships, it just makes the shared relationship stronger. You had finally figured that out as Joel was making love to you. Fears can come and go whenever they want, but people you love will stick with you- even through the fucking apocalypse.

Visions of the American city in post-apocalyptic ruin permeate literary and popular fiction, across print, visual, audio and digital media. American Cities in Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction explores the prevalence of these representations in American culture, drawing from a wide range of primary and critical works from the early-twentieth century to today. Beginning with science fiction in literary magazines, before taking in radio dramas, film, video games and expansive transmedia franchises, Robert Yeates argues that post-apocalyptic representations of the American city are uniquely suited for explorations of contemporary urban issues. Examining how the post-apocalyptic American city has been repeatedly adapted and repurposed to new and developing media over the last century, this book reveals that the content and form of such texts work together to create vivid and immersive fictional spaces in ways that would otherwise not be possible. Chapters present media-specific analyses of these texts, situating them within their historical contexts and the broader history of representations of urban ruins in American fiction.

So far, we’ve released the post-apocalyptic story of Other Earth called Voices From The Umbra, the southern gothic drama Scoundrel, and the cosmic horror christmas carol A Bell Tolls there.
Earlier this month, we started releasing Genuine Radio, a surreal horror radio show, and the second episode comes out on Monday.
That's awesome, congratulations!

Sci-Fi Saturday: Five
Week 29:
Film(s): Five (Dir. Arch Oboler, 1951, USA)
Viewing Format: Streaming Video (Amazon)
Date Watched: 2022-02-11
Rationale for Inclusion:
Late in the runtime of last week's film, The Thing From Another World (Dir. Christian Nyby, 1951, USA), as part of a monologue trying to convince his fellow occupants of the Arctic base not to destroy the carnivorous plant alien that has already drained the blood of multiple scientists and sled dogs, Dr. Carrington (Robert Cornthwaite) concludes his plea for the importance of the pursuit of knowledge at all costs with, "We split the atom." At which point, one of the airmen, Lt. Eddie Dykes (James Young), cuts in with, "Yes, and that sure made the world happy, didn't it?" The sardonic quip stops Carrington cold.
In 1951, only six years had passed since the United States had deployed atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in August of 1945. Whilst news of the destruction and atrocities were initially slow to spread, by the time the film takes place the scientists and airmen in The Thing no doubt knew the horrors inflicted upon Japan. Furthermore, the Soviet Union had detonated its first nuclear weapon in 1949, and the Cold War was very much underway.
With this cultural context in place, it follows that the post-apocalyptic film would make a comeback in the 1950s. Rocketship X-M (Dir. Kurt Neumann, 1950, USA) featured a post nuclear disaster society on Mars, but this survey has not featured a film where the central narrative is built around people trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world since natural disaster film Deluge (Dir. Felix E. Feist, 1933, USA). So when I encountered Five (Dir. Arch Oboler, 1951, USA) described as the "first to depict the aftermath of an Earthly atomic bomb catastrophe" whilst perusing Wikipedia's science fiction cinema list, I knew it was an essential film to view.
Five was an independent film written, directed and produced by Arch Oboler, a successful radio dramatist who followed in Orson Welles' footsteps in transitioning to filmmaking. Oboler had directed three films prior to Five, and to keep costs down on the production the cast featured relatively unknown working actors, the crew was recruited from recent University of Southern California graduates, and the primary filming location was a Frank Lloyd Wright designed guest house on Oboler's Malibu ranch.
Reactions:
With its limited cast and locations, Five is dominantly the kind of no frills character study that would become more commonplace during the 1960s. It is simply and competently made with aesthetics that may remind modern day audiences of episodes of anthology television series, like The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits.
As implied by the title of the film, the small cast of characters includes five people: the pregnant Roseanne Rogers (Susan Douglas Rubeš), white everyman Michael Rogin (William Phipps), the aged bank clerk Oliver P. Barnstaple (Earl Lee), black everyman Charles (Charles Lampkin), and supposedly affluent adventurer Eric (James Anderson). Roseanne's sex and Charles' race become sources of drama, mostly because Eric exhibits a behavior described decades later by sociologists as "elite panic."
Lee Clarke and Caron Chess of Rutgers University coined the term in a 2008 journal article, in which based on available research and case studies of disasters from the 1950s through 2001 they determined that the source of panic in these scenarios was not the general public devolving into a mob, but by elites, fearing that their power and wealth would be violently stripped from them by a mob. Clarke and Chess specifically identify three relationships with panic that occur during disasters: elites fearing panic, elites causing panic, and elites panicking. My introduction to this concept came via an episode of the podcast Behind the Bastards recorded during November of 2020, when amid the COVID-19 pandemic and stress around the presidential election having a reminder that the majority of people are inherently giving, caring, communal creatures was a huge comfort.
In Five, after an initially violent encounter, Michael and Roseanne band together for survival, with Oliver and Charles later joining them. They compassionately deal with Roseanne's pregnancy and Oliver's mental dissociation and decline from radiation sickness amid their limited resources. Oliver's dying request to visit the nearby ocean results in the old man having as peaceful a death as available under the circumstances, and the discovery of a man washed ashore, Eric.
The injured Eric's explanation for how he survived the atomic bombing is bizarre compared to the banality of the others' explanations, who were shielded from the blast via being in an elevator, lead-lined hospital x-ray room, and bank vault, respectively. Instead Eric was actively climbing Mount Everest alone when a blizzard stranded him. When he made it back to basecamp he found other climbers dead. On foot and via abandoned conveyances Eric had made his way back to America, encountering no other survivors along the way, just dead bodies.
Eric's journey in its entirety sounds highly unlikely, but at first only one aspect utterly defied my credulity: who climbs Mount Everest alone? Mountaineering is not a pet topic of research for me, but I know enough to know that no serious climber attempts Everest without guides, frequently members of the local Sherpa community. "What happened to his sherpa?" I demanded aloud when we got to this point in the film. "Did he eat them?"
Given that Eric is gradually revealed to be a greedy opportunist, in retrospect his story may have been nothing but lies. It seems more likely he was in the United States the entire time and leapfrogged from one pocket of resources and survivors to another until he ended up washing up on the beach. Regardless of whether he actually was a billionaire or not--and the film does nothing to disprove his account--he nevertheless has an elite mentality: trying to hoard resources (including Roseanne) to himself.
Eric is the sociopathic evolution of the wandering rapists from Deluge, and ultimately serves the narrative role of Michael's doppelganger. Michael may have initially tried to sexually assault Roseanne, but spends the rest of the film making up for that feral moment. Eric is predatory and ends up becoming a murderer in the course of the narrative; after being banished by the others, he goes back to steal supplies and kills Charles when he is caught. Michael is spared having to also become a murderer by the reveal near the end of the film that Eric has radiation poisoning and likely does not have much time left. The film makes it clear that Michael is a good man, and deserving of being the new Adam of the post-apocalyptic world.
Roseanne earns her new Eve status in part by being the token female, and in part because she is devoted to her missing husband until she finds definitive proof that he died in the bombing. Her dedication to her husband and baby are all that is needed to qualify her as a good woman.
Unfortunately, her newborn dies for reasons of narrative convenience. Apparently it was too much to ask for Michael to be father to a baby he did not conceive. Instead it ends with Michael and Roseanne left alone. Despite the tragedies and threat of radiation sickness lingering, Five closes conservatively and reasonably optimistically: life will go on.
Before I wrap up, I would be remiss if I did not spend more time discussing Charles. His presence is itself a progressive act, given how the casts of most mainstream films surveyed thus far have been all or mostly white. However, he is introduced in a subservient role to an old white man, and spends the remainder of his time in the narrative as a litmus test to show who is the superior white man to repopulate the world: Michael or Eric. The notion that Charles might be a candidate for Roseanne's mate is never so much as suggested. For all the indignities Charles suffers throughout Five, he at least is spared the trope frequently placed on black men of being the first to die. Overall, Charles is a minor step forward for black representation in science fiction cinema.
Five, on the other hand, is a solid first representation of the post-nuclear apocalypse narrative. Later films built on the premise, like On the Beach (Dir. Stanley Kramer, 1959) and The World, the Flesh and the Devil (Dir. Ranald MacDougall, 1959), would result in better movies, but Five deserves greater attention within the sub-genre.

Honestly, depressing as the real-life end of the story was, the Daring Dashwood stories make me wonder if other new radio dramas are/could be produced in the post-apocalyptic world. I mean, if Three Dog could apparently arrange for this whole new story, why not someone else?
And...you know...I bet nobody officially holds the license for the Silver Shroud anymore. And even if they could, it's been over a hundred years - that's public domain now. And nothing will ever convince me that Kent Connolly has not written at least some fanfiction in his time...
What I am getting at here is...new Silver Shroud radio episodes? Remake? I could see Kent getting very into that, and having a new project like that might be good for him. Either continuing the pre-war stories or doing something like how they brought Captain America to the modern day to tell stories about the Silver Shroud in today's Commonwealth. Particularly as the actual Silver Shroud who was running around for a while was genuinely frozen for two centuries and it's a plot device the radio show apparently used.
I mean, you might have to change a few details, change a few names to protect people's privacy, but I could see that doing really well, given that there are apparently a fair few Silver Shroud fans out there - Preston, to name just one.

What audio dramas do you recommend
hmm, it depends on what you're looking for! i listen to a lot of horror and science fiction, and i tend to prefer dramas that wrap up after a few seasons.
for long form drama, you can't go wrong with Our Fair City. post-apocalyptic science fiction, presented (loosely) in the style of old radio plays. it follows a group of survivors who have made their home beneath the old corporate building of a life insurance company and whose entire society has built its political structure around the corporation's HR manual. it is full of references/homages to classic science fiction from the 20s-50s, and the voice acting + audio quality are pristine. it originally ran from 2009-2018 but is actually re-releasing in the feed right now, so it isn't as daunting to begin. the episodes are all around 15 minutes, very manageable for a longer drama, imo.
i have a lot of criticisms of QCode generally, but i did really enjoy their adaptation of The Left Right Game. it was well produced and very nostalgic for me, but ymmv. i listen to this one a lot on long road trips since it's only ten episodes, but each episode is roughly an hour.
The Silt Verses is probably my favorite. it's a tale of monstrous divinity, of a world shaped by hungry and unknowable gods and the people who worship them. S1 is really more of an upscale audio book, but once the Patreon money kicked in, the remaining two seasons have a huge jump in quality. worth sticking it out, in my opinion, as the writing is excellent.
Archive 81 is another one i revisit a lot. the Netflix version was so disappointing and barely resembled this podcast at all. if you enjoy the writing of Jeff Vandermeer or Drew Magary, you'd probably like this. each season explores the same universe with different characters, so you can skip around if you don't care for a particular storyline.
i tentatively recommend The Grey Rooms if you want a horror anthology. it has a framing narrative that you can follow or not follow, depending on your mood. i personally find it charming. i think the stories are usually pretty decent, but the beauty of anthology is that if it sucks you can just skip it without missing anything. tentative because it is on indefinite hiatus, so if you pay attention to the larger story arc, you're going to be left hanging. but if you're only listening for the stories themselves, you'll be fine. i'm also a huge Graham Rowat fan, and this anthology showcases his incredible range, so i'm biased.
and then, idk. for old radio shows i like Inner Sanctum Mysteries, The Whistler, Johnny Dollar, and Our Miss Brooks. they're hosted by a variety of sources, shout out to the archival angels.
these are just the dramas off the top of my head that i think most people would find enjoyable based on the acting and production quality. but everyone's tastes are different!

A PLACE OF PARADOX Audio Book RADIO VÉRTÉ Presents: A PLACE OF PARADOX, A Literary Fiction Podcast Written & Narrated by Cory Zimmerman. The Wild Wind is an American gothic tale of a woman born and raised on the grounds of a psychiatric institution—not as a patient, but the daughter of the asylum’s farmer—who learns of love and loss while grappling with the question of what it means to be sane when insanity is the norm. “What’s to be sane in the garden of madness?” That's the question haunting Sarah, a centenarian writing about her life growing up at the asylum on the bank of the Illinois River. After a long-tormented life, Sarah intends to commit after completing a typewritten manuscript spoken to a man named Sam. Through a lens of lore and myth—the secrets that shaped Sarah’s twisted and mysterious life are revealed. In Sarah's labyrinthine attempt to find healing and peace, she deconstructs the most transformative moments of her life.
