I don't know if it's occurred to anyone recently, that the real/biggest reason that Lex Luthor felt like an alien while growing up in Smallville wasn't just that he was extremely intelligent (to an admittedly astronomical degree), but mainly due to the fact that he was hypersensitive, struggled to connect with people unless he felt they were very similar to him and was basically socially inept, all likely due to a possibly undiagnosed neurological condition (your guess is as good as any).

I feel like it's been heavily implied for a while now in certain Superman works that Lex may have literally been on the autism spectrum or have grown up with a related condition. Combine that with super genius intellect, a deeply ingrained sense of superiority and entitlement as well as emotional growth-stunting abuse, and you have a recipe for the perfect completely unstable, super villain catastrophe.

Likewise, I think it's been implied for a while now that Clark is also a representation of what being neurodivergent is like, but with the metaphor being made actual. Hence why he doesn't "feel like" an alien. He IS an alien. An alien that has had to mask what makes him different from others his entire life. With only those closest to him knowing the truth.

A perfect example of both of these concepts can be found in the first issue of the (technically...) on-going Superman miniseries Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor. (Same with its spiritual predecessor Superman: Birthright, if I'm being honest.)

What does anybody else think? It seems to me that only a few people at most have talked about any of this before, at least online.

More notes for my Anthro AU

-Iterators are a life form that is somewhat like half robotic/computers & half life/living organism, they "live off the string" but generally live near of the superstructures, I'm thinking the superstructures work similar to apartments. The longest living iterator was recorded to be around 200 years old. (Slugcats in this anthro au live about as long as humans, same with Scavengers. Domestic Lizards live about 8 to 10 years. Feral Lizards live around 10 to 13 years or so -> still gotta think more on this) -Looks to the Moon is around 4 years older then her brother; Five Pebbles. (General age estimation currently: Sliver of Straw: age 29, Looks to the Moon, age 26. Straw & Moon are married (slivermoon real) Chasing Wind is 25, No Significant Harassment/Sig & Seven Red Suns are the same age (24) & Five Pebbles is the youngest; at 22.) -When Moon was about 17 maybe 18, she became dehydrated. Her body was in a worse state then she realized (at this time, she was dating Sliver of Straw) Sliver & her parents took Moon to the hospital for iterators after Moon started to have seizures after passing out. It took the hospital workers a while to reach Moon's parents & to figure out what happened to Moon, why it happened, & how to stop her from getting worse. By the time Moon became somewhat stable, her brain had suffered cognitive (memory) & motor problems because of brain damage from the seizures. Moon requires forearm crutches if she were to stand up/walk around.

-When Five Pebbles saw Moon in this new state for the first time, he couldn't help but feel guilty/bad because he & Moon got into an argument before any of this happened, causing Moon to live temporarily (a few days) at her partner's & her partner's parents' place. -After Moon was revived & has been struggling to re-figure out how to manage herself & thrive, a parasite breakout began to infect the area. The parasite was called "The Rot" & the cancerous diseases were often nicknamed "The Rotting Disease" as the parasite would cause certain organs of the living hosts/beings to rot away into becoming non-functional. Currently the only characters in my au to have the rotting disease during the story/survived it by the time the story takes place: Spearmaster (survived, requires a feeding tube to eat/gain nutrition as their digestive system, specifically their stomach has been damaged to the rotting disease.) Hunter (survived, has scarring across her body from surgeries & tumor removals.) & Five Pebbles, who barely survives but does eventually recover. Five Pebbles would be one of the first iterators to survive one of the worst infection states of the rotting disease. -Five Pebbles is on the autism spectrum (gotta do some more research to decide how ASD effects him) & He isn't diagnosed until after Moon's near death experience & her recovery/revival process. Five Pebbles also doesn't meet Artificer for a while, but he does meet her when he's around maybe 30 or 40 years old. -Possible fact/concept: Iterators age similarly to humans, they reach their adult years around mid 20's though. Their lifespan is doubled compared to humans. I'm Thinking it might function like this (early concept): 0 - 1 year = baby age range 2 - 4 years = toddler age range 5 - 10 years = child age range 10 - 20 years = teenage age range 25 & up = adult age range 160 & up = elder age range

IPs That Could Benefit From LEGO Speed Champions

Speed Champions sets have been known to be both detailed and relaxing builds by the community.

Besides making F1 vehicles and expensive cars from Lamborghini, AMG, BMW and so on, LEGO has also ventured out into making licensed IP Speed Champions cars: two from The Fast & The Furious films and the Aston Martin DB5 from the 007 films.

What if I said there's opportunities for other cars that had the potential to become Speed Champions sets if LEGO were to fork out for the licensing but that potential is sitting on the table with nothing being done? You'd be as surprised as I am.

Some of the following IPs are of my own opinion that could benefit from being turned into a Speed Champions set.

Dumb & Dumber

Known as one of the best and funniest films of 1994, Dumb & Dumber is known for the infamous Mutt Cutts van that Harry drives until he is laid off and him and best friend Lloyd go on a road trip to Aspen to return a briefcase full of money.

A concept for the van itself could be somewhere in the 300 piece range with some stickers representing the Mutt Cutts logo on both sides of the van and a license plate sticker as well as some interesting building techniques for the outer design of what is essentially a dog. The minifigures of Harry & Lloyd could be them on the road trip or even one of Harry in his dog suit with a dog in the back, a red and yellow container set that represents the ketchup & mustard and other nods to the film. The van is based off of the 1984 Ford Econoline.

Rain Man

Known as one of the best films of the 80's and one of the best representations of ASD, Tom Cruise & Dustin Hoffman knocked it out of the park with Rain Man. Cruise's character Charlie acquires his father's car after his father's death but also discovers he has an autistic brother named Raymond and they take a cross country road trip discovering and bonding with one another and becoming real brothers.

The car in question is the 1949 Buick Roadmaster that could follow the new formula of Speed Champions being 8 studs wide with a mixture of both stickers and prints with interesting building techniques and pieces to build the inside (especially the red seating) and can include a removable top that on the car itself went up or down. As far as minifigures, Charlie & Raymond are given and an optional third could be Charlie's girlfriend since in one scene, they're all in the car at once so they could find a way to design & build a car to fit 3 minifigures instead of only 2.

Mad Max

Possibly one of the most iconic cars of any action film, Mad Max's Interceptor/Pursuit Special is based off the 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT Coupe and became Max's iconic ride starring Mel Gibson.

Alongside the Max minifigure (which could include a wrench and maybe a creative piece that could look like a double-barreled shotgun), this could work using the 8-stud wide concept LEGO uses for Speed Champions with the built engine on top of the car along with rust-like stickers seen in the ECTO-1 set to show its' look through the wasteland and either stickers for the headlights or printed pieces and a sticker for a potential license plate on the back of the car.

The Hangover

This trilogy of films took off and became one of the best comedic films of the late 2000s directed by Todd Phillips who has been known for comedic style films.

The car in question that the movie has is the 1965 Mercedes 220SE and can work based off the new SC formula and can work either as a top up or top down vehicle depending on builder liking. You'd have your set of stickers representing the doors and the inside dash along with brick colored seating that matches the film. The minifigures would be the core four characters of Doug, Stu, Phil and Alan and if LEGO wanted to, throw in Mike Tyson's tiger or even stickers that represent when the tiger destroys the inside of the car and even some references to the film that each of the 4 characters can hold in one of their hands.

The Dukes Of Hazzard

This is gonna be a controversial choice for one major reason: The Confederate flag. If you're unaware of what the General Lee is, it's probably the most famous fictional car in all of pop culture (or at least ranks as one of the top ones).

Based off of the 1969 Dodge Charger, the General Lee could be a standard for the 8-stud wide model of Speed Champions cars seen in current LEGO sets as long as they get around the issue of showing off the Confederate Flag but still make it authentic to the show so fans and builders know it's the General Lee. The obvious minifigures would be Bo & Luke Duke with the "01" on the sides of the car being stickers and a generic flag sticker atop the car.

These are only my thoughts on some IPs that could be turned into Speed Champions sets if LEGO can acquire the licensing to but I'm aware people will have differing opinions so let's discuss them.

I always end up being a little late for these things, but I wanted to do something real quick for Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month. I myself am neurotypical, but as a writer, I'm making an effort to diversify my characters as much as possible, so I'd like to introduce two of my characters who are both on the autism spectrum. This is Damien and Katie. They're step siblings, and even though I'm still learning how to portray them accurately, I think they're a great example of how people with autism aren't all the same.

Damien's autism is displayed much more openly than his sister's. He was diagnosed with ASD at a young age and grew up with a strong support system because of that. He has a special interest in baseball and other sports, and he also experiences physical tics due to having comorbid Tourette's. Even though he was well-supported and received ABA therapy that helped him learn how to communicate and regulate himself in a healthy manner, Damien faced a lot of bullying as a child, and Katie often had to stand up for him. Despite this, Damien remained a very happy and lighthearted guy, and as an adult he uses his experience to connect with and help children dealing with the same things he did on the special needs baseball team he volunteers for.

Katie had a very different story. Like many young girls with autism, Katie began masking her symptoms when she was very young. She learned how to imitate reactions and emotions she saw in other people even when she didn't really understand them. Because of this, she remained undiagnosed throughout all of her adolescence, and most people simply interpreted her behavior as her being standoffish or rude. She has a bit of an RBF. She dealt with a lot of turmoil surrounding this, growing frustrated when she struggled to relate with others and manage her own emotions effectively, often describing herself as feeling like an alien trapped on earth. She found an outlet for this frustration in studying boxing which allowed her to stim in a way she had previously not allowed herself to and quickly became a special interest for her. In highschool, she also made a connection with her best friend and partner, Ronnie, who was one of the first people who took the time to connect with her in a way that no one ever had before. Katie felt that Ronnie was the first person to ever get her, and she says she was the first person who ever made her feel "human". It wasn't until her late 20's when, after a particularly revealing conversation with Damien and Ronnie ("Wait? That isn't how everyone feels?"), that Katie received a proper diagnosis and began to properly understand that there was nothing wrong with the way her mind works.

These two are both characters from one of my current WIPs, Diamond in the Rough, and again, I'm obviously still learning. I'm hoping to put a ton of research into this project so that I can give it the accuracy it deserves. I love Katie and Damien very dearly, and I hope I'll be able to do them enough justice that one day people can relate to them and feel as celebrated as they deserve to be.

Viv! I love her.

Viv was a very early character in the original skelefive AU. She had a habit of absolutely clinging to Mani when she saw him. She was set to be a patient and possibly a friend to one of the original skele7’s (yes I originally had 7 skeletons in the AU) younger members. As an executive decision, she’s diagnosed with EDS and ASD, as well as selective mutism.

How do you feel about a neurotypical person playing the role of Spencer Reid though? Personally I do like Matthew Gray Gubler in that role but I think he was hired for his appearance rather than for something else. I would have liked to see a real autistic person in that role.

Spencer Reid isn’t canonically autistic, though. The character was pitched as a 40-something male, intelligent, a ‘walking dictionary’ akin to Data from Star Trek (referenced by the original SAGAFTRA casting call, and Gubler himself). The character may have been altered or defined to better suit the actor selected, to create a more dynamic ensemble, to fulfil CBS’ terms as the pilot moved to series, or as a natural progression as the character grew over 15 years. But it is clear no autistic role was ever in development. Even when we consider what ‘Spencer Reid’ the character would become as the series progressed, the casting call that was released did not specify he was/could have ASD. For that reason the actor who auditioned is not at fault here. Furthermore, Intelligence and social awkwardness are not always an indicator of ASD, and I would argue they are not in Spencer Reid. Here’s why.

Disclaimer: the essay that follows contains my own views and opinions on Spencer Reid, in reference to a possible ASD diagnosis. This is what anon asked for — my thoughts, as someone with ASD. Opinions are supported by examples from the source material. Some members of the fandom may see things a different way, or disagree with what I am arguing, but I am no longer replying to messages or comments related to this. Accept we have a different viewpoint and move on, thank you.

Many of Spencer Reid’s perceived ‘stereotypical’ autistic traits — intelligence, inability to regulate emotions, awkwardness, isolation/pariahdom — could be a result of his childhood and past experiences. The small glimpses we have seen into Spencer’s life prior to 2005 may provide some insight.

Canonically, Spencer had no suitable parental figure from age 10. After his father left, he was alone with a mentally ill mother. In 12x11, we see Diana physically assault Spencer when she becomes enrages. When he lies and tells her the marks are a result of him bumping into something, her comments about him being such a clumsy child she called him ‘crash’ may indicate the abuse was longstanding and repeatedly covered up by Spencer in the same manner. Perhaps in fear he would lose a second parent. Although Diana’s abuse may not have always been physical, from 2x16 we understand her illness made it hard for her to get our of bed, and remember what day of the week it was. We can therefore infer she was incapable of ensuring Spencer was well taken care of. Cooking, cleaning, caring for him when he was sick, or dealing with his school bullies would have been out of the question.

By 3x16, it is clear Spencer’s young life was defined by abuse. Whether that be wilful neglect from his father, as a result of his mother’s illness, or at the hand of his peer group. The incident involving the goal post Spencer speaks about in this episode, and the similar experience from 8x12, are both examples of sexual abuse. There is no acceptable argument against this. We can infer that if the teenagers that assaulted Spencer did this without apparent consequence, the rest of Spencer’s high school life must have been a nightmare. The trauma and isolation Spencer experienced during this period could most definitely have resulted in an inability to connect with others. Friendships and romantic relationships are based on trust and vulnerability, Spencer has learned not to give anyone that power over him. As Spencer himself said in 1x10 “I confided in you. This is exactly what happens when I trust someone, it gets thrown back in my face.”

Another trait Spencer is said to exhibits that many use as confirmation of his ASD, is his apparent inability to pick up on social and behavioural cues. I would argue this is false. Spencer is a profiler. He has been seen outwitting and outsmarting many unsubs by picking up on things like vocal changes, eye contact and mannerisms, anticipating a reaction and using it to his advantage. He was able to detect JJ was pregnant far before anyone else, and that Emily picked her nails when stressed. Not knowing what Twilight is, or about the K-I-S-S-I-N-G song, is not representative of missing social cues. Spencer is known to not read “much in English”, to not have email, to have no friends outside of work to talk about pop-culture with, and to be a technophobe. It may also be argued that Spencer’s ability to connect with the unsub or how well he profiles their behaviour, varies depending on who is writing the episode and what story they want to tell that week. Similarly, in 6x20, Spencer reveals during childhood therapy sessions, he was able to read the situation and respond accordingly in away that satisfied the adult professional. This is not typical for an autistic child. Again, this is based on a stereotype, but so is the fandoms understanding of Spencer and his apparent ASD to begin with.

TLDR: So, in conclusion I wouldn’t say the casting is problematic at all. The character has never been canonically autistic and any perceived ‘autistic traits’ the fandom sees, have been indicated long after the series had commenced. As someone with ASD, I would be wary to label Spencer Reid ‘autistic’ based on how well he fits the ‘Sheldon Cooper’ stereotype, when his behaviour and personality can be seen as a result of his environment and experiences. I think giving the ‘autistic’ label can be dangerous in these instances (ignoring the fact Spencer is a fictional character), as it offers an ‘explanation’ for behaviour and an excuse for those around the person to be idle. I mean this, in the sense that someone like Spencer who has experienced neglect and sexual abuse as a child, and who has difficulty connecting with and trusting those around him because of those experiences, needs help to deal with those feelings. Rather than to be less ‘autistic’.

As a final note, I would also like to say I would never speculate on a real persons status as ‘neurotypical’ or otherwise. Unless explicitly stated themselves. Things like OCD, ADHD and Dyspraxia are harder to detect in adults, especially ones we know from a few interviews. I think in this instance a non-autistic actor plays Spencer Reid, but it’s not my place to offer anything else.

Adora might be autistic too

Alright, most people in the SPOP fandom agree that Entrapta is autistic, as her coding is extremely obvious. However, some of us also believe that our beloved protagonist Adora is on the spectrum as well. She comes off as quite the aspie, and while Asperger’s is no longer a diagnosis in the DSM-V (but is in other manuals), it falls under the blanket diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its diagnostic criteria is still useful in analyzing people for signs of the disorder. In analyzing Adora’s character I will refer somewhat to both disorders, with the understanding that Asperger’s is a specific manifestation of ASD.

I would like to preface this by saying this is a headcanon and people are free to disagree with me. Some of these characteristics I’m going to bring up could also manifest because of her very sheltered upbringing in a cult-like atmosphere or mental illnesses such as anxiety and complex PTSD (both of which she arguably has). I am autistic myself, so obviously I am inclined to interpret these symptoms this way, but to each their own. It’s also worth noting that Adora has a lot of symptoms that cross over with AD(H)D, a cousin disorder to ASD, and it’s totally possible she has both.

In any case, there is now enough evidence hinting at Adora’s neurodivergence (especially now that the Rebel Princess Guide has been released) that I feel the need to explain this theory in detail instead of just occasionally mentioning it. So here goes...

She’s naive/easily manipulated

This one doesn’t really need explaining, we’ve all seen it. Adora assumes people are telling the truth because why would anyone lie to her? That is such a relatable spectrum feel. She was handily brainwashed by Shadow Weaver in the Horde, while some of the others didn’t seem to swallow the propaganda so easily. This is of course partly because of the special attention and affection Adora got from Shadow Weaver, but she had to be vulnerable to manipulation in the first place for it to work.

Later, she trusts Huntara easily in the Crimson Waste despite Bow and Glimmer’s warnings about her questionable character. Adora happily follows her into a trap even once Bow and Glimmer tell her they're going the wrong way, reasoning it’s probably a shortcut rather than reevaluating her misplaced trust. This can be partly explained by how she‘s gay af for Huntara, but still.

(Interestingly, the episode cuts straight from this moment to the obviously autistic Entrapta going against her own friend's advice and refusing to give up on the portal machine despite the obvious warning sign of Hordak’s violent dismissal. Parallels, much?)

Her difficulty understanding other points of view

A lot of Adora’s conflict with Catra is predicated on misunderstandings, and she has a hard time understanding the effects her actions have on other people, Catra in particular. For instance, she misunderstands Catra talking about ruling the Horde together as being purely about power, while Catra’s actual goals are safety and Adora’s companionship. That miscommunication is not just Adora’s fault, but it illustrates that she has difficulty understanding other people’s needs and motives without being explicitly told.

This isn’t just a problem with Catra, either. In general Adora has a difficult time understanding other’s motives and feelings. For instance, she doesn’t understand Glimmer’s insecurity over Bow’s friendship with Perfuma at Princess Prom, and she can’t fathom why Entrapta would choose to work for an evil faction, going so far as to assume she must have been brainwashed into it. This is because, just like with Catra, she doesn’t understand that some people’s priorities are not the same as hers.

Autistic kids tend to reach developmental milestones at different times than neurotypicals, sometimes being way ahead and other times falling behind. One such marker that is usually slower to develop and often stays impaired is theory of mind, our ability to a) understand that other people have different perspectives and b) understand those perspectives. Adora’s difficulties being able to put herself in someone else’s shoes definitely lines up with this symptom.

She’s clumsy

For someone so athletic, Adora sure lacks coordination. This is a commonly cited symptom of people with Asperger’s, though it shows up in people with other forms of ASD too. In general, autistic people often have difficulty with fine and/or gross motor skills, and this can lead to being accident and injury prone. According to Catra in 3x05, Adora bumps her head a lot. That may have just been a callback to 1x01, but either way clumsiness has been part of her characterization since the beginning, one of her many loveable, adorkable qualities.

Her lack of social and self awareness

Adora can be painfully oblivious to her own inappropriate behavior. There’s several examples of this throughout the series, one of the more costly ones coming at Princess Prom. Shocked by Frosta’s youth, Adora fails to register how maybe this (in front of Frosta, with all eyes on her) is not the time to remark on it. She immediately realizes this was the wrong thing to say (or at least not something she should shout), but that small delay causes both her and Glimmer a lot of embarrassment.

Part of the issue here is that she loses control of her volume, which in itself is a common problem for those of us on the spectrum. This isn’t the only time we see her have this problem, either, and it’s amplified (tee hee) when she’s drunk/infected.

More generally, one of the funniest examples of Adora’s poor social awareness comes when she barges into Huntara’s flirtation with the bartender in the Crimson Waste. She’s so focused on her task of recruiting Huntara that it doesn’t even occur to her that this is an intimate moment and intruding would be rude.

In the Rebel Princess Guide Adora also says she wishes Queen Angella would let her make some adjustments to the uniforms of the Bright Moon guards, which implies she tried to make these suggestions already. Maybe she figured She-Ra could suggest anything, but as both a newcomer and a royal subject that’s a bit of a faux pas. Chances are, that went right over Adora’s head.

She can’t read a room to save her life (literally)

This is another, more specific aspect of social awareness. Adora has difficulty picking up on the implicit rules (social norms) when she enters unfamiliar situations, and has a tendency to step on toes because of it. She also doesn’t understand when her friends try to nonverbally communicate what she’s doing wrong, and nonverbal communication deficits and problems with social awareness and insight are two major symptoms of ASD. One specifically listed example is “difficulties adjusting behavior to suit social contexts”, including:

Lack of response to contextual cues (e.g. social cues from others indicating a change in behavior is implicitly requested)

Unaware of social conventions/appropriate social behavior; asks socially inappropriate questions or makes socially inappropriate statements

Here’s a couple specific example of times where Adora misses or misunderstands nonverbal cues to change her behavior:

At her first Rebellion meeting she doesn’t realize that maybe she shouldn’t sit in the special-looking chair, and doesn’t clue in that that’s why everyone is freaking out.

In the Crimson Waste, Glimmer responds to the growling bar patrons surrounding them by suggesting that maybe these aren’t the kind of people they should be asking for help, but Adora persists. She jumps up on the bar and makes a speech trying to get directions (which is socially inappropriate for the context as well as dangerous), somehow missing all the scowls from the patrons as well as Bow and Glimmer’s wild gesturing.

Panic over unfamiliar social situations

Adora’s anxiety about going to Princess Prom could be attributed to many things, not just a spectrum disorder. Her obvious anxiety, for one, though to be fair there’s a high comorbidity between the two disorders. In any case, it seems the unfamiliarity of the situation is a sticking point for Adora in particular, while Bow and Glimmer are nothing but excited for their first ball.

Adora’s anxiety seems to stem mostly from being overwhelmed by the prospect of entering a new social situation with a whole bunch of unfamiliar rules to remember. She’s still learning behavioral norms outside of the Horde, and this is a huge jump up in terms of difficulty for her fledgling social skills.

To cope with her stress she goes overboard trying to prepare by making a conspiracy board of sorts, flash cards, and an obstacle course. And at the ball itself, it seems like she’s even rehearsed how to behave.

This probably isn’t only relatable to autistics, but it’s very relatable to us. Creating and rehearsing behavioral scripts is a common strategy to avoid embarrassing ourselves in public. Unfortunately, as we saw above, this works for about five seconds before Adora botches the whole thing by commenting on Frosta’s age.

Extreme stress over details

In general, Adora is a very anxious, perfectionistic person who hyperfixates on details, a very autistic trait. As mentioned above, this is wonderfully illustrated by her overpreparation for Princess Prom. She’s broken down the overwhelming list of rules in the invite into categories to make it more manageable, gone into detail categorizing people’s relationships to each other, and learned trivia about the guests in order to feel more prepared. Yet, somehow she missed the important fact that the hostess is only eleven years old.

Unfortunately this hangup doen’t only affect her, but also her friends and allies. The overarching theme in “Roll With It” is how debilitating Adora’s anxiety and perfectionism can be. Her eye for detail and ability to see flaws in plans is actually very valuable, but she gets so hung up on every possible thing that could go wrong that she can’t accept imperfect solutions with calculated risks.

Her propensity to be overwhelmed by too much information (like with the Princess Prom invite) shows up here too. Adora grows more and more frustrated and overwhelmed as more princesses join the planning session, adding more variables to deal with and more people to manage. She begins lashing out and shooting down every possible solution that doesn’t satisfy her need for perfection immediately. Her behavior looks like it may be headed for a meltdown until it culminates in an epic rant revealing all her anxiety and how it ties into her insecurities about her own imperfection.

Thankfully her friends are able to reassure her that she has support and doesn’t have to be perfect, but it’s an ongoing battle, one we already saw her struggle with in “Flowers for She-Ra” and “The Battle of Bright Moon”. It’s a strong tenet of Adora’s personality that is proving difficult to shake.

What she misses about the Horde

The recently published Rebel Princess Guide contains a list by Adora of things she misses about the Horde, and this list screams neurodivergent. I’ll go through it point by point, since there’s a lot to unpack here.

THINGS I MISS ABOUT THE HORDE

1. I miss the rigid schedule. It never changed, and I always knew what to expect.

Ritualistic behavior and an insistence on sameness are often seen in individuals with ASD. In fact, it’s a major symptom. Many of us have diifficulty adjusting to changing schedules, changes in diet, or even minor changes in our environment (such as placement of objects, boy do I have stories there). We need warning when things are going to change, and even if we know it’s coming it’s still a struggle to adjust.

2. I miss the constant sound of machines and whirring. In Bright Moon, there’s always music playing, or people laughing, and birds singing. It’s nice but it makes it hard to focus!

Autistic brains process sensory information differently from neurotypicals, that’s basically our disorder at its core. Over or under reactions to sensory input are common and in fact considered a major symptom, and this entry of Adora’s specifically refers to difficulties with sensory filtering. We have a hard time filtering out information that’s irrelevant to our current task, which makes us easily distractable.

3. Believe it or not, I miss my hard cot in the barracks. My bed in the castle is way too soft!

This ties into both the insistence on sameness and sensory issues.

4. Catra… sometimes.

This isn’t autistic, it’s just gay.

Speaking of which...

She’s gay

Adora's relationship with Catra has always been queer-coded, but any doubts about her sexuality were dispelled in season 3 by the way she fawns over Huntara like a baby gay over her gym teacher. Her obvious queerness might seem unrelated to the topic of autism, but those of us within the community can attest there’s probably just as many queer people among us as there are cishets. It’s so notable that there has been quite a bit of scientific research confirming people with ASD are more likely to be LGBT and gender atypical and exploring the cause of this link.

(This needs no proving at this point, but enjoy these gifs anyway...)

In conclusion

Overall, there’s a lot of hints and circumstantial evidence suggesting Adora could have ASD. Was this the creators’ intent? Hard to say. Adora is the protagonist and one of the most developed characters, so she’s definitely not a cardboard cutout or checklist for ASD symptoms (compare that to Entrapta, a secondary character whose behaviors can often easily be attributed to autism). It’s totally possible the creators just characterized her as naive and awkward and obsessive without realizing the implications of that cluster of traits together.

Regardless of authorial intent, it’s perfectly valid to look at Adora and see representation of the ASD community. The groundwork is there. And if someone else looks and doesn’t see it, or sees something else causing this behavior, that is also fair. No one is forcing anyone to accept this headcanon (or at least they shouldn’t be), but in return please don’t disparage it. Even if she is not autistic Adora is definitely autistic-coded, and we could use some more heros with the disorder, given how we’re mostly relegated to being villains and anti-heroes (not that there’s anything wrong with us filling those roles sometimes, but a little variety would be nice).

Adora is often referred to as a dumbass, but she’s actually quite intelligent, just sometimes slow to understand how she should act and how people feel. Still, she tries her hardest, just as she does with everything else. Adora is heroic and compassionate, even if she sometimes struggles to understand others. When autistic-coded characters are so commonly portrayed as cold and unforgiving, Adora is a sorely needed exception.

Minecraft oc infodump/character profile time!! I am Horrible at getting things written down so this is mostly me trying to put everything on paper, so to speak. Feel free to read through if you wanna !!

The boring bit. The basics. Who are they?

Sparky, Biz, and Twitch are brothers, all three being regular Guardians. Ages somewhere in the 100′s each, with sparky being the eldest and Twitch the youngest.

Boss’s age is further up in the 1000′s, as an Elder Guardian (more of a subspecies than an age) he lives much longer and is far bigger in general. This subspecies continues growing their entire life, and with age can grow to about 30 ft tall. He is currently about 12 ft.

All four come from the same Ocean monument, and are the only surviving creatures from said monument, which was attacked and taken apart by humans for its treasures some time ago. As the sole survivors of the incident, they’ve taken it upon themselves to take back what was stolen piece by piece, through whatever means necessary- hitman-type jobs and safely escorting land folk across the ocean are often taken on in return for gold and other trinkets.

Despite generally being a dangerous group, in private they’re much more like a family. The three youngest are a force of chaos when left alone.

Personal stuff. A little more interesting:

Sparky: [ Calm, quiet, kinda sadistic?]

The redstone expert of the group. He sets traps. He codes. He gathers information via worryingly violent means. He knows how to do pretty much everything. A jack of all trades kind of guy, and as such, a bit of a shut-in. 

In his off time, though, hes actually pretty into theatre, sewing, and few other little hobbies that take up most of his attention. He’s far quieter than his youngest brother, but the most supportive of his constant hyperactivity.

Also, he’s Trans.

Twitch: [Jesus christ what the fuck is that]

The youngest. A force of absolute uncontrolled chaos. He’s loud, hyperactive, and doesn’t know how to shut up. He will say what is on his mind and you will listen to it whether you like it or not. This man cannot be stopped.

His attention span lasts for the duration of a job- it’s not entirely clear what he does, but people end up on the ground and he remains completely unscathed. 

There’s more depth to him than surface level silliness, though- he’s actually quite thoughtful. His knack for saying whats on his mind means he’ll be the first to comfort and spill the truth to those who need it. A good friend, even if he comes off as a bit much at first. He’s got ASD, and possible ADHD (Just like Me! ! ! :) )but this doesn’t prevent his boss or his brothers from treating him as they do each other.

Biz: [Edgelord]

The quiet one. The middle child. The shortest. Don’t point out the last part.

His skills include, but are not limited to:

Punching.

Also, he looks pretty menacing while he feels like it.

This man is an open book as much as a desert is the same thing as a dessert; That is to say, you’ll never get a word out of him.

Private time is spent either drinking with his brothers or sitting in his room and thinking that nobody else can hear him practising writing and playing music.

Boss: [Oh Boy.]

 Everyone’s favourite bastard. Leader of the group, and despite not actually being related to the other three, the closest thing they have to a parent at this point.

He’s serious almost 100 percent of the time- no time for bullshit with this guy. He takes his “work” very seriously

There’s depth to him under the apparent hostility he shows the majority of people, but it rarely comes to the surface. It may only become apparent when the boys find themselves in serious danger, at which point it’s best to get the fuck out of his way.

He doesn’t make too much time for hobbies- often found at his desk most days, but when he does take time off, it’s spent with his little group of lackeys, or training for the more violent jobs.

while i was in town today i found a journal that belonged to senakhtenre said. i took a peek inside and found out they’re twenty-nine and they feel alienated by their relationship with family because he has a hard time following tradition, but you didn’t hear that from me. apparently their favorite place in town is lo-fi and i noticed they’re an employee so i brought it to them at work, did i tell you they were on neko atsume during our entire conversation and when they left all they said was “I PROBABLY FORGOT I WAS SUPPOSED TO DO SOMETHING, GOTTA GO”.

howdy children i’m ben and this is my mans, sena. he’s a bit of a new muse but i’ve had the idea of him bouncing around in my brain for awhile, and ta-da, here he is! i’m bad at character bios but here are some bullets of important details:

first generation egyptian-american, sena comes from a family of traditionalists with old money. his parents have never explained to him why they left egypt in the first place, at this point he doesn’t really care, if only because he doesn’t talk to them anymore.

he’s fluent in arabic and english, and he takes a greek glass on the weekends when he feels like it -- he’s pretty proud of himself for committing to something.

he went to two years of community college and got an AA in something or other, he doesn’t really remember. probably something to do with writing, which he likes to do but isn’t the best at.

speaking of commitment: he works at lo-fi, and has for a couple of months now. he’s had quite a few odd jobs in his lifetime (his parents thought it would build character, usually customer service just made him anxious), but this is the longest he’s ever stayed at one place.

sena falls under ASD, and what this means for him is a hard time reading social cues and communicating with strangers or sometimes even not-strangers. he’s considered to be on the “mild” side of the spectrum, though he does have other symptoms on occasion.

he didn’t have a lot of friends growing up, and continues to keep his circle pretty small. surprise, surprise. but when he does manage to make friends he’s extremely loyal and Would Fight For Them.

a l w a y s  t i r e d. please help him sleep a healthy amount for once in his life. he stays up late watching re-runs of 90s sitcoms and eating way too much popcorn for one human to consume.

he has a small scrappy dog named cleo that he adopted from a shelter in the next town over. he’s thought about starting his own shelter in red oak, only because he likes dogs.

that was kind of a mess and i’ll do a real bio later but if you’re still reading, hello again and here are some possible connections!!:
