i’ve always loved hetalia spain and i remember when i got into hetalia in 2017 i used to go crazy asking my best friend who’s argentinian but grew up in spain about stuff related to spain that i heard in his character songs so im finding texts from years and years ago where we’re talking about cosechas and the fiesta de San Fermín 😭
#because the thing is#i know running of the bulls which totally disavow btw i just didnt know the proper name#of like the entire festival#and cosecha is kinda similar to portugese colheita but i guess i never made the connection lol#now that i think about it in spanish class i lowkey don’t remember ever getting a vocab list or anything 😭😭😭#they just expected is to infer based on Portuguese knowledge which tbh makes sense.#lol#and then you just pick up on the outliers like perro and coche. or just say carro because in some places thats not wrong heh#and deal with the frustration that is gendered articles because it’s infuriating when they dont match Portuguese#sorry but in no way is a trip masculine. it’s a viagem not el viaje#wait. el viaje bothered me like crazy in high school but nowadays it’s not so bad what…. el viage… u r growing on me#hws spain#hetalia#aph spain

One of my favourite ways to practice my reading skills in TLs is to read books in languages I'm A2+ in which I've already read in my native language (English) in the past.
Right now I'm working my way through The Lightning Thief in Portuguese (O ladrão de raios), Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone in Catalan (Tothom a la meva família ha matat algú), and All Systems Red in Spanish (Sistemas críticos). The Spanish has been pretty easy which (makes sense since it's my most advanced L2 with the highest amount of study time), but both the Portuguese and Catalan books have been quite a bit of a challenge!
To encourage myself to read more, I'm planning on making vocab lists like this for unfamiliar words I come across in my reading (in any TL but mainly Portuguese and Catalan). Some of the words listed may have other meanings that I didn't include, but I'm only adding definitions for the context they appear in in the text. I'm putting them in the order the words appear instead of in alphabetical order because I'm lazy lmao. For verbs I'm providing them in the infinitive even if they appeared conjugated in the text, and adjectives are given in the masculine singular form regardless of how they appeared inflected in the text.
Unfamiliar vocab from my Catalan reading practice, Chapter 1 of Tothom a la meva família ha matat algú:
Aleshores - then, so (compare to French alors or Italian allora)
Enroscar - to curl up
Avantbraç - forearm
Atropellar - to run over (with a car)
Trucada - (telephone) call
Cremallera - zipper
Trepitjar - to step on
Gometa - rubber band
Llambregada - glance
Nítida - sharp
Clariana - clearing
Lluentor - shine
Gebre - frost
Centelleig - twinkling (n.)
Xarxa - net (in context describing a spiders' web)
Teranyina - spiderweb, cobweb
Bellugar - to fidget
Passamuntanyes - balaclava, ski mask
Xifra - numerical figure, number
A la gatzoneta - crouching on one's heels, squatting; (from "agotzonar-se" meaning "to crouch down")
Tallagespa - lawnmower
Enganxifós - sticky

hello, ive been learning portuguese for a bit and i was wondering if you had any recommendations for media? like youtubers, blogs, movies or series. if you do, thanks in advance
uff fuck, i will sure try my best but i can’t promise anything
I normally get my dose of Portuguese via going to academic workshops or working alongside Brazilian people, so I don’t exactly engage with media in Portuguese as a conscious learning process, I'm afraid. Like, for example, i normally just get a bunch of Instagram reels and TikToks cause I'm on the Brazilian side of instagram/tiktok, and not exactly because i follow any particular account or something, and i don’t level or recognize how hard the Portuguese is in each one, etc
I have some series that i remember watching and liking tho, which are:
De volta aos 15: a drama/comedy series around a 30yo woman that time travels a few times to when she was 15 and tries to fix everyone's life, as one does
A sogra que te pariu: a very absurd sitcom in the best latinoamerican style (and set during covid)
Samantha!: Another comedy, now about a kid star from the '80s who is trying to launch herself back
Lulli: comedy, drama and romance. A medic student gets electrocuted and starts hearing everyone's thoughts
3%: suspense, fiction, drama. Set on a diasporic word where, while everyone gets a one-time change to better their life, only the 3% makes it
Ciudad invisible: Drama, mystery. This one has lots of references to folk culture and stories! It's about a man who, after a family tragedy, starts seeing different mythological creatures that will help him uncover the past
omnisciente: sci-fi, drama, thriller. The city is controlled and watched all the time everywhere by drones. A woman tries to solve a murder that the drones never picked on + plus discover how fucked up the system and the drones are
Coisa mais linda: Drama, romance, set in 1959, after getting cheated on and left alone, a woman sets herself to open her own bossa nova club
ninguem tá olheando: comedy, drama, fantasy after discovering some secrets of the bureaucratic angelic system, a guardian angel set himself to break every rule that there is for protecting humans
Valentina: drama a young trans girl moves to a more conservative rural town
Alice júnior: Coming of age film about a YouTuber trans girl as she challenges her catholic school's conservative ways
#you can always check/follow latinotiktoks here on tumblr#there is not only lots of videos in portuguese#but also ppl are always asking for recomendations about music tw shows books etc#specially those that are more closely related to brasil/latine culure(s)#a fair warning about the list above: while several are pretty light. some of the stuff addressed on other will be very heavy#+ as i said. i don't really remember or notices how advanced was the language used#what more?#many of them can be found in myflixerz.to#i sooo wanted to also mention orgulho e paixon which is a telenovela adaptation of all the jane austen books#but it felt a little too much sdjskhkjads#for other types of media/hobbies i just recomend to do what u normally do but search it in portuguese#like i loove to draw and paint and sometimes i look up video reviews of art supply to see which one will be best for me#but instead of searching it in english or my mother tongue#i just search it in portuguese#sometimes is more less of following an account and add them to your already formed rutine and alike#and more like just working and exciting in another language during a normal day

yesterday i got to share one of my top fanfictions of all time with my friends and even though its likely they wont read it im happy. to have introduced them to real literature.
known as "sasori and deidara had an escape-death-and-akatsuki contingency plan and fuck off to continue their art inspired crimes. together <3"
#sugar.txt#thank god the author mirrored it on ao3 because i no longer remember how to navigate fanfic.net#archaic ass website#i WILL SAY i dont like the fact op gave deidara +2 mouths but its forgiven in the long run. the ex boyfriend with the 5 [redacted] is an#hilarious addiction#anyway#it doubles as sasori character study because it takes a lot for him to get comfy with not-eternal concepts#and although iirc deidara has always been stubborn that his ephemeral ways are superior he Does respect sasori so him being ok with his#puppet artistic nonsense from the getgo in the fic makes sense. its a lot of years turning chickens#<- portuguese saying#i want to print and bind this thing so i never lose it. its on my to do list#this was written before they temp came back as zombies. keep that in mind. its OLD old#the chapter where sasori properly reattaches deidaras arms has me feeling some typa way.

new and edited version of the list of anthems I know the lyrics of by now:
‘know’ means I could properly sing it with everyone at a sporting event - so for most of them it’s just the first verse and chorus. * means I know more than that () means it’s a dependency/territory so not technically a ‘national’ anthem I’ll also count anthems that don’t have official lyrics if I can whistle them in full

had another weird (but kinda funny dream) and I want to document it again so that i don’t forget it
#essentially I was on holiday with my family and my bf family#but me and my mom FOR SOME REASON decided that no. we would drive our own plane for returning home. so my mom drove this plane.#as we approach to land my mom realised that she has never drove a plane before and therefore has ZERO idea on how to land it#so we get close to the ground but ofc we crash#my mom only ends up a little broken and I hurt my head and I go into a coma#basically this coma lasts 5 YEARS. YEAH. but I don’t age a day.#and when I come back the world seems so fun and much better from what i remember#my boyfriend then takes me around to meet everyone again and everyone is so happy to see me#they gift me tons of shit#and also the antimeridionalisti and the parents of one of them were there (wow so many cameos)#also my mom is now with pedro pascal and a bunch of a list celebs dine with us#then I was starting to speak Spanish with my mom and pedro because we were comparing it to Portuguese (my auntie is from there and so is her#family)#but then my mom woke me up at 7am beacuse I had my window open and she told me “time to study!!!!”#and nothing this was the dream. thank you for joining.#also I’ve never studied Spanish but I do know various sentences and words lol#randomly#dream

I have too much on my to do list for next year.
Get in a volleyball club. Learn how to play the drums. 4 months internship. Then I gotta find a job starting January (hopefully in a warehouse with a sound equipment company). Get back into drawing (and learn). Get a new tattoo. Get my driver's licence. Find a way to live on my own next year. Go back to making clothes and make them fantasy this time. Play and DM for D&D (finallly, let's hope). Keep learning portuguese.
#there might be more stuff#but that's my starting list#i have been wanting to learn how to play drums for years (i still remember my first and only lesson that made my parents so mad)#(i was a kid in a hot neighbourhood at night :))) i was a little dumb)#i need to keep going with portuguese because I'm starting to feel like i get a better understanding of the language and I'd love to#be able to speak it casually with friends#and volleyball. I'm this close to getting back into it. I must grab that chance cause it might not come back for a long time#but with the shitty schedule that is one of a sound tech's it's not gonna be easy to manage just these three...#in terms of clothing...I really wanna go back to my cosplays and medieval fantasy garbs and finally get to go to a LARP#also blastedking's zargothrax outfits are magnificent and great inspiration fuel#and when will I finally get to play dnd :') I even started following courses on how to DM so that I feel more confident to do it
