East Quebec: Côte Nord part 2
In the morning, when I checked in for the boat excursion for a tour of the western Mingan Archipelo,, I was surprised to receive a thick lifevest-jacket as the excursion the previous day had been on a regular tourist boat... turned out that we were now braving the rough sea on a little speedboat! 😳 Needless to say that we got quite some wave-spray over us but luckily the wind dried quickly again👍.
The first island we passed by was literally covered with hundreds of seals, which quickly slipped into the water when we got closer. Very special to see, especially when a few curious ones came over to check us out 😍. I really need to buy a better camera to capture wildlife but trust me, there's many seals in the pic!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then visited the Île aux Perroquets which is named after the many puffins which make the island its home. I've seen puffins several times before in Newfoundland and Iceland but they continue to be extremely cute with their beaks & droopy eyes 💖 (There's 3 in the top left corner of the first photo and then 6 in the last one). The island is tiny with a road from the dock to the lighthouse where you can stay overnight - mostly done by hardcore birdwatchers of which there were a few with massive telescope cameras - I should have asked them for a copy of their photos! 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second island we visited was Île Nue de Mingan that has again several monoliths on the shores of a treeless, sub-artic landscape due to the high winds and drought (despite being in the middle of the sea 🤔). Same as the day before, we were greeted on each island at the dock by a Parks Canada guide who would tell us about the geology, fauna & flora and cultural history, which made it feel very welcoming and unique, especially as we were the only group that day as a result of the rough sea. At the end of the visit, the captain had fished (with a mop that they easily cling to 😁) some sea urchins for us to try, a delicious salty taste like oysters! (My mother would not appreciate 😅)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way back to shore was tough as we were now going straight into the waves, so I arrived back at the car more wet than dry... luckily I got tons of clothes with me on this trip. 😜
An hour further west I did a pretty hike to two waterfalls on the Manitou river, which were very impressive in terms of the water volume and their surroundings (still the same skeleton boreal forest though 😂). Down & then up again lots of stairs meant my muscles were being worked!
For the rest of the day, it was a long slog of 515km driving in the rain & fog to my next stay... The sea is pretty whether it's sparkling blue on a calm day or like on this stormy day, white-capped crashing onto the shore, so it was beautiful no matter what, but the difficult driving conditions (more poignant when I passed by an overturned truck) made it very tiring. Had a quick dinner at a packed microbrewery at Baie-Comeau, thereby officially completing my Labrador loop which I had started in the same town 12 days earlier 😲🥳, and arrived at 8:30pm at a cute B&B in Portneuf-sur-Mer where the lady of the house made me a cup of tea 😊. Didn't see much attractions on this long day and although I could have taken an extra day over this stretch to visit a few more lighthouses, do coastal hikes etc, at the same time I was getting fed-up with all the bad weather and ready to move inland...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But... my very last day on Canada's eastern seaborne turned out to be beautiful once the fog had lifted during a walk on a sandbar (which was nothing special but feels good to start the day with a small walk 😄). The Haute-Côte-Nord area around the fjord of Saguenay is famous for its thirteen (!) types of whales, and Parks Canada manages two great observation centres; the Marine Environment Discovery Centre where the presentation on anemones & sea stars (touching allowed! 😃) was interrupted when a pod of 7 belugas and also two porpoises cruised by 💖, and the Cap de Bon-Désir, where people simply sit on the rocks while an interpreter answers any questions. Two mink whales were the star attraction coming up again & again in different places, but in any case, if you like me have nothing important to do, there's much worse than just soaking in the sun & staring at the sea! 😊😎
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did pull myself away eventually to drive myself over to Tadoussac, which is undoubtedly a nice village when it's not overrun by tourists, to catch the ferry across the fjord. Grocery shopping at La Malbaie where the high waterlevel in the river from the recent downpours was clearly visible, and then finally made my first dinner over a campfire since I started the trip! Glass of wine and off to bed...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wildlife: 100's of seals, puffins, razorbills & female eiders, 2 loons and 1 porpoise (West Mingan islands), 7 belugas, 2 porpoises & 1 grey seal (Marine discovery centre), 2 mink whales, 2 porpoises, 2 harbour seals, 1 grey seal & 1 loon (Cap de Bon-Désir)
SUPs: none
Hikes: one at the Manitou waterfalls
Distance driven this week: 968km

"8 Medical Men Guilty," Windsor Star. February 22, 1943. Page 9. --- One Officer Dismissed From Army; Four Jail Sentences ---- QUEBEC, Feb. 22.-Eight of nine army medical officers and men who recently faced a general court martial here following alleged irregularities in medical examinations of army recruits have been found guilty, it was announced last night by Brig. E. A. Blais, officer commanding military district No. 5.
The announcement, made public last night after the eight had been paraded before Brig. Blais, also contained sentences which included, for the officers, one dismissal, one severe reprimand and rank penalty, one severe reprimand and one reprimand.
The other ranks were sentenced to periods of detention ranging from 45 days to nine months.
M.P. EXONERATED Of the nine men to face the court- all members of No. 5 company of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps except one private-only one, Lieut. (acting captain) Pierre Gauthier, Bloc Canadien Populaire member of Parliament for Portneuf, was completely exonerated.
Findings and sentences of the court - presided over by Brig. J. A. Leclaire and which sat from November 25 to January 8 - were forwarded to Ottawa to the adjutant-general's department for confirmation before being announced.
OFFICERS AND SENTENCES Capt. G. A. Grondin, 43, of Quebec, was found guilty on a charge of accepting various sums of money during the performance of his military duties and was sentenced "to be dismissed from His Majesty's service."
Maj. Ludovic Lavallee, 52, of Neuville, Que., was acquitted of a charge of having examined various persons prior to their regular army medical board but was convicted of having accepted sums of money in connection with examinations and of having shared the money with another accused person.
He was sentenced to be severely reprimanded and given a rank penalty which will result in his majority being dated from January 8-date of the end of the court martial-instead of before (The date when Maj. Lavallee originally won his majority was not im- mediately available.)
Military sources and Antoine Rivard, K.C., who acted as defence counsel for the officers and men, said that the rank penalty meant Maj. Lavallee would forfeit his seniority for one year up to January 8.
Maj. Celestin Guimont, 34. of Pont Rouge, Que, was freed of charges of having examined persons prior to their regular army medical board but was found guilty of having accepted sums of money in connection with examinations. He was sentenced to a severe reprimand.
Capt. Yves Gadbois, 26, of Quebec, was sentenced to be reprimanded for having accepted $20 while performing his military duties.
Details of the reprimands were not made public in any case.
CASES OF OTHER RANKS In the cases of the other ranks, whose sentences start from January 8, Pte. Leopold Houde, 35, of Quebec drew the heaviest term - nine months' detention. He was found guilty of having accepted sums of money in the performance of his duties and of having distributed the money among other medical personnel.
Pte. Georges Fortin, 24, of Quebec, who faced the same charges as Houde, was acquitted on the second count but was sentenced to 90 days' detention on the first charge.
Pte. Louis Philippe Hamel, 25, of Quebec, charged similarly to Houde and Fortin, also was given 90 days.
Pte. Paul Henri Cloutier, 19, of Charlesbourg. Que., only man to enter a plea of guilty and a member of No. 5 district depot, was given 45 days detention on a charge of having accepted bribes.
There was no question of irregularities in the medical examinations themselves, the court emphasized.
MEMBERS OF COURT The court was composed of Brig. Leclaire; Col. J. R. Roche, Le Regiment de Maisonneuve; Lt. Col. G. E. Bouchard. Le Regiment de la Chau- diere; Lt.-Col. C. L. Laurin, Le Regiment de Chateauguay; Lt.-Col. G. L.. Taschereau, Le Regiment de la Chaudiere: Lt. Col. P. Trudeau, Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal and Maj. R. G. Marion, Les Fusiliers Mont Royal.
Maj. Maurice Lalonde acted as judge advocate and Lt.-Col. Laval Fortier was Crown prosecutor. Antoine Rivard, K.C., acted for the officers and men.
Mr. Rivard said he would make an appeal against the judgments "to competent authorities."

Four children and a man die after being swept away by tides in Quebec (Washington Post) Four children and a man are dead in Canada after they were caught by the tide while fishing in Quebec province, according to provincial police. They were part of a group of 11 people fishing for capelin, a small forage fish known to spawn at night on the beach in spring and summer, on the shore of the St. Lawrence River in the Portneuf-sur-Mer area, about 300 miles northeast of Montreal. The six others were rescued. Emergency services were called to the scene around 2 a.m. Saturday. The tides in the area can be dangerous, Canadian news media reported. The waters recede by up to half a mile at low tide, making it sometimes difficult to return to shore when the waters return.
Biden signs debt ceiling bill (AP) With just two days to spare, President Joe Biden signed legislation on Saturday that lifts the nation’s debt ceiling, averting an unprecedented default on the federal government’s debt. It was a decidedly low-key denouement to a monthslong drama that unnerved financial markets at home and abroad and caused anxious retirees and social service organizations to make contingency plans in case the country was unable to pay all its bills. The Treasury Department had warned that the country would start running short of cash on Monday, which would have sent shockwaves through the U.S. and global economies.
Panama launches operation against smugglers in Darien Gap (AP) Panama unveiled a new effort to control illegal migration through the treacherous Darien Gap that spans its eastern border with Colombia on Friday. Hundreds of thousands of migrants have risked the dangerous trek through the jungle in recent years and the flow this year is on a record pace. Most of those who cross are trying to reach the United States. So in April, as the U.S. government prepared to lift pandemic-related restrictions that had allowed authorities to turn back asylum seekers at the border, it announced together with Panama and Colombia increased efforts in the largely lawless Darien Gap. Panama’s “Shield” campaign announced Friday is the first public display of those new efforts. The Darien Gap earned its name because it is the break in the Pan-American Highway connecting South and North America. Darien is also the name of Panama’s easternmost province, which abuts Colombia. It is composed of dense, roadless jungle, mountains and fast flowing rivers. Migrants who have made the crossing regularly report being robbed, sexually assaulted and of seeing bodies of others who did not survive along the way.
Ukraine shelling continues in Russia’s Belgorod as thousands relocated (Reuters) Shelling by Ukrainian forces on Russia’s Belgorod region continued overnight on Sunday after two people were killed the previous night and hundreds of children were evacuated away from the border, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Sunday. “Overnight, it was quite restless,” Gladkov said on the Telegram channel, adding that the Shebekino and Volokonovsky districts suffered “lots” of damage from shelling during the night. More than 4,000 people were relocated to temporary accommodation in the region, which borders Ukraine to its south and west, Gladkov said. The reality of the war, which Moscow launched in Ukraine in February 2022, has been increasingly brought to Russia, with intensified shelling on border regions but also air strikes deep inside the country, including earlier this week on Moscow.
NATO-trained units will serve as tip of spear in Ukraine’s counteroffensive (Washington Post) When Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive finally begins, the fight will be led by brigades armed not only with Western weapons but also Western know-how, gleaned from months of training aimed at transforming Ukraine’s military into a modern force skilled in NATO’s most advanced warfare tactics. As other Ukrainian units were fighting to expel the Russian occupiers from the country’s east and south, the brand-new 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade was preparing for the next phase of war from a classroom at a NATO base in Germany. The brigade’s leadership trained with computers that simulated situations they might face in real life. Deputy commander Maj. Ivan Shalamaha and others planned their assaults and then let the program show them the results—how their Russian enemies might respond, where they could make a breakthrough and where they would suffer losses. Now the war games are over. The 47th brigade and other assault units have been armed with Western weapons, including Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, and relocated to a secret location closer to the front line. The counteroffensive will be the biggest test yet of the U.S.-led strategy of giving the Ukrainians weapons and training to fight like an American army might—but on their own.
Hundreds of thousands march in Poland anti-government protests (AP) Hundreds of thousands of people marched in an anti-government protest in Poland’s capital on Sunday, with citizens traveling from across the country to voice their anger at officials who they say have eroded democratic norms and created fears that the nation is following Hungary and Turkey down the path to autocracy. Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who belongs to the opposition party that led the march, estimated that 500,000 people took part. The Onet news portal estimated there were at least 300,000 at the march’s culmination. Large crowds also gathered in Krakow and other cities across the nation of 38 million people, showing frustration with a government that critics accuse of violating the constitution and eroding fundamental rights in Poland.
Indian railways minister says signaling system error led to crash that killed over 300 people (AP) The train derailment in eastern India that killed more than 300 people and injured hundreds more was caused by an error in the electronic signaling system that led a train to wrongly change tracks, India’s railways minister said Sunday. Preliminary investigations revealed that a signal was given to the high-speed Coromandel Express to enter the main track line, but the signal was later taken off, and the train instead entered an adjacent loop line where it rammed into a goods train. The collision flipped Coromandel Express’s coaches onto another track, causing the incoming Yesvantpur-Howrah Express from the opposite side to derail, triggering a three-train collision. The passenger trains were carrying 2,296 people total.
China defends buzzing American warship in Taiwan Strait, accuses US of provoking Beijing (AP) China’s defense minister defended sailing a warship across the path of an American destroyer and Canadian frigate transiting the Taiwan Strait, telling a gathering of some of the world’s top defense officials in Singapore on Sunday that such so-called “freedom of navigation” patrols are a provocation to China. In his first international public address since becoming defense minister in March, Gen. Li Shangfu told the Shangri-La Dialogue that China doesn’t have any problems with “innocent passage” but that “we must prevent attempts that try to use those freedom of navigation (patrols), that innocent passage, to exercise hegemony of navigation.” U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told the same forum Saturday that Washington would not “flinch in the face of bullying or coercion” from China and would continue regularly sailing through and flying over the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea to emphasize they are international waters, countering Beijing’s sweeping territorial claims.
Hong Kong, once home to Tiananmen vigil, now hosts pro-China carnival (Washington Post) For decades, tens of thousands would come to Hong Kong’s Victoria Park every June 4 to raise a candle in somber commemoration for those killed by the Chinese military as it crushed the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. This Sunday, after three years of prohibitions on gathering due to the coronavirus pandemic, the soccer pitches will fill again. But rather than remembering the hundreds, if not thousands, who died in the crackdown, the visitors will instead be attending a fair, organized by pro-China groups, to celebrate the city’s handover to Beijing. Beginning Saturday, Victoria Park will host three days of games, musical performances and carnival stalls selling goods from across China—a celebration, organizers said, of Hong Kong moving forward on a “new journey” 26 years after Britain handed control of the city back to China. (Never mind that the anniversary isn’t for another month.) The festivities kicked off amid tight security, with police officers and members of Hong Kong’s counterterrorism response unit patrolling the grounds. It marked a jarring transformation over just four years: from somber candlelight vigil to heavily policed desolation to flag-waving carnival. For Hong Kong’s endangered democracy movement, the site has become a symbol of the dizzying speed with which their freedoms have eroded as Beijing exerts control over the city’s future—and its past.
Zimbabwe’s ‘Patriotic Bill’ outlaws criticism of government before election (Reuters) Zimbabwe’s parliament has outlawed criticism of the government ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections in August, with violations of a new law punishable by up to 20 years in jail. The Criminal Law Code Amendment Bill, widely known as the “Patriotic Bill”, contains a clause that criminalises “wilfully damaging the sovereignty and national interest of Zimbabwe”. Opposition activists said the law, passed late on Wednesday, was designed to punish citizens, civil society organisations and political adversaries of the ruling ZANU-PF party.
Darth Vader on trial: Chilean court convicts Star Wars Sith lord (Euronews) Well, about time! 120 kilometres west of the Chilean capital Santiago, the Valparaiso Court of Appeal has issued its decision against the defendant, a certain Mr. Anakin Skywalker, aka: Darth Vader, the most famous asthmatic villain in all of cinema history. A misunderstood villain, perhaps, as the galaxy’s foremost choking hazard just wanted his son to join the family business, but justice must be served. The verdict of the mock trial? For the mutilation of his son Luke in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Vader has been slapped by the Valparaiso Court with a freezing in carbonite and a restraining order. Additionally, Vader was completely and perpetually forbidden to use the force and his lightsaber, thus putting an end of to his Sith-kebabing days. Why the defence didn’t invoke the fact that Vader’s crimes happened “a long time ago”—thereby are subject to a statute of limitation—and that the courts of Valparaíso do not have jurisdiction on what happened “in a galaxy far, far away” is beyond us. The mock trial was used as an educational exercise to show citizens how institutions work and thus get closer to them.

Rescue teams hoping to disentangle right whale in St. Lawrence
Article content Fisheries and Oceans Canada says whale rescue teams are preparing to make another attempt to disentangle a young right whale in the St. Lawrence Estuary. The department says it has been working for more than two weeks to disentangle the animal, which was first spotted June 22 off the coast of New Brunswick and was seen Monday off Portneuf-sur-Mer, across the river from Rimouski. A spokesperson says several rescue attempts have already been made and rescuers managed to remove part of the rope that is wrapped around the animal. They say the Campobello Whale Rescue Team is on its way to the area and will attempt to intervene in the coming days when the weather permits. The New England Aquarium has said the entangled animal is believed to be a female calf, approximately one-and-a-half years old, that was born in 2023 to a whale named “War.” The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered large whale species in the world, with United States conservation officials saying there are about 360 of the animals in existence. An estimated 85 per cent of right whales have been entangled in fishing gear at least once.
