Camping – Know before you do?
Camping is an open-air activity including all night stays away from home in a shelter, such as a tent or a recreational vehicle. Usually, members leave developed areas to be with the nature along with the activities providing them enjoyment. The night (one or more) spent outdoors differentiates camping from day-tripping, picnicking, and other similarly short-term recreational activities.
Camping can be a nourishing, bonding experience with your friends and family.
However, it could turn into a nightmare affecting portable-stove-nuked sausages, collapsing tents, and invading bears. Fortunately, there are many measures you can take to fix camping ahead of time and grab yourself a wholesome, outdoor experience.
Let us take you through the top camping spots.
Cleaverville, WA – It is Located between Karratha and Whickham, approximately 1600 km from Perth. The water here is like glass and is for months on end. The fishing was spectacular, and the diving even more so.
EYRE PENINSULA, SA - The water is not exactly tropical and is home to some rather big sharks, but it has some of the Australia’s most dramatic coastline, the best seafood in the country and next to no tourists.
Francois Peron National Park, WA – It is in the northern part of Shark Bay/Denham, approximately 830 km from Perth. This is close to Perth; you can come across the orange sand butting up to pristine white beaches and stunning blue ocean. You can lie/ sit at top of the National Park and oceanic beauties like whales, turtles, sharks, seals and a heap of other wildlife swim right by. There are lots of places to camp here.
MOUNT AUGUSTUS, WA - Most impressive thing here is Mount Augustus, the world’s biggest rock.
England Track, NSW – It is located just south of Coffs Harbour, approximately 500 km from Sydney. The England Track is about a quick drive out of town and is a steep, slippery route that is a worthy challenge for any vehicle and driver.
WESTERN DESERT, WA - It is about as remote as you can make but spending time in the desert is an experience that last forever. These are challenging but really are the ultimate roads less travelled.
There are many things that every Off Road Camper Australia will need to bring for Conqueror Australia. There are also a few items that are necessary for the Conqueror Off Road Campers and Conqueror Off Road Caravans but needn’t be carried by every individual member of the party.
For the most part, we need these things no matter where we are heading for. Because we use these items on each and every trip, it is always wise to prioritize these things when allotting your camping-gear budget. Like sleeping bag, water bottle, flashlight, multi tool, survival kit. Few things are required for the whole camping party like tent, Water purifier, camp stove, first aid kit, Mess kit, Map.
On the Other Hand, car campers will probably want to double or triple the length of this list. And if you are driving up to your campsite, there is nothing wrong with that at all.
Happy and Relaxing Camping!

As a kid, I always thought that the people who talked on the radio were actually inside the radio set. It got crazier when I once saw a cockroach crawl out of my grandfather’s double-speaker Sonitec radio.
Later, I learnt that there was a studio somewhere that the people spoke through, and then the signal transmitted to my portable transistor radio I had in my room. Even then, I still believed that the musicians/bands/artists would have to avail themselves at the studios to perform physically.
So today as we celebrate World Radio Day, here is a brief history of broadcasting:
It is generally recognized that the first radio transmission was made from a temporary station set up by Guglielmo Marconi in 1895 on the Isle of Wight. This followed on from pioneering work in the field by a number of people including Alessandro Volta, André-Marie Ampère, Georg Ohm and James Clerk Maxwell.
The radio broadcasting of music and talk intended to reach a dispersed audience started experimentally around 1905-1906, and commercially around 1920 to 1923. VHF (very high frequency) stations started 30 to 35 years later. In the early days, radio stations broadcast on the longwave, medium wave and shortwave bands, and later on VHF (very high frequency) and UHF (ultra high frequency). However, in the United Kingdom, Hungary, France and some other places, from as early as 1890 there was already a system whereby news, music, live theatre, music hall, fiction readings, religious broadcasts, etc., were available in private homes [and other places] via the conventional telephone line, with subscribers being supplied with a number of special, personalised headsets. In Britain this system was known as Electrophone, and was available as early as 1895 or 1899 [sources vary] and up until 1926. In Hungary, it was called Telefon Hírmondó [1893-1920s], and in France, Théâtrophone [1890-1932]). The Wikipedia Telefon Hírmondó page includes a 1907 program guide which looks remarkably similar to the types of schedules used by many broadcasting stations some 20 or 30 years later.
By the 1950s, virtually every country had a broadcasting system, typically one owned and operated by the government. Alternative modes included commercial radio, as in the United States; or a dual system with both state sponsored and commercial stations, introduced in Australia as early as 1924, with Canada following in 1932. Today, most countries have evolved into a dual system, including the UK. By 1955, practically every family in North America and Western Europe, as well as Japan, had a radio. A dramatic change came in the 1960s with the introduction of small inexpensive portable transistor radios which greatly expanded ownership and usage. Access became practically universal around the world.
What does radio mean to you?

Ferrying a 1946 Auster J2 through Australia
God was on my shoulder. The problem being I was not sure on which shoulder and who was on the other one!
The aircraft ferry game is both interesting and where one always expects the unexpected. My card reads “Can Ferry, Will Travel.” Flying an older aircraft cross country is more than just throwing your bag in the back and departing. To do the job properly means planning ahead.
Now for a long time I had always wanted to get to fly an Auster J2. I had seen the J2 pair of VH-PUK and VH-PUL around Victoria with various owners over the years but had never set foot in one. I had flown several Austers but for some reason I had a fancy to fly the two-seat J2. Maybe that was because I had flown a Taylor J-2 and a Piper J-3. Who knows?
Then I heard that VH-PUL was for sale in Queensland. I contacted the owner and said if the new owner needed an experienced tailwheel pilot to ferry the aircraft anywhere please pass my number to him. I had hopes that the new owner was located in Western Australia. I could wish!
Sorry, was the reply, but the aircraft has been sold and the owner has his own tailwheel-endorsed pilot to assist him. Oh! I know what crestfallen means.
Time passed. Somehow I made the contact with the new owner and told him that I was an instructor, had good tailwheel time, and had flown Austers amongst other older aircraft.
OK, thanks, was the reply.
Time passed. I got a call from the new owner, Rod. Would I be interested in ferrying VH-PUL from Moree to its new home near Bendigo?
Hmm, YES, was the reply.
The die was set. I made my way to Sydney in a 737 and then to Moree in a QF Dash -8.
Now somewhere in the first ferry south from Gympie, Qld., PUL had an issue on landing at some strip north of Moree and the left gear leg got bent.
Time to get acquainted.
Campbell Briggs of Statewide Aviation, an ag operator, took kindly to Rod and his pilot and ground transported the bent machine to Moree. There it was nursed back to good health.
On arrival at Moree I checked in at a motel. Next day the airport. There I met PUL. After a good look over, I went for a test drive. I did a half hour of general handling and shot a few circuits on runway 01. The wind was rather much a northerly so I did not have to work too hard to keep the aircraft straight with its drum brakes and heel brake pedals.
I saddled up and departed. The forecast was for low cloud and haze along the route that I had planned, Moree–Narrabri–Narromine and a refuel, some 189 nm.
As I flew south the cloud base progressively lifted and from Narrabri it was plain sailing. Past Coonabarabran and a big area of trees—not good for a forced landing. I skirted west of the Siding Springs Observatory and the nearby mountain that had a spot height of 4,344 ft. Over Gilgandra and onto Narromine. There was a westerly wind so I elected to land on runway 29 with a tad of crosswind.
I touched down and the left wheel instantly flattened and I pulled up with a bumpty bump. A flat tyre!
There I was on Narromine’s runway 29, stuck like a shag on a rock. No one around and the cold wind must have come direct from the Antarctic. I called Rod and give him the good news.
I tried to get the airport manager but he was on his day off. Then low and behold he trundled up in his work truck. Soon after≤ another fellow turned up. He got a trolley used to raise gliders with the gliding club and we slowly manhandled it to a hangar. There we spent almost an hour trying to get the tyre off the wheel.
A guy working on a Mooney in the hangar showed how you have to take off the outer rim, then push back the tyre casing to get access to a circular circlip. Once that is removed the tyre can then come free and give you access to the tube inside. Sound easy? Not for an Auster wheel newbee.
Now with the tube in hand, it was easy to see how it had been pinched when the out rim had been put on. The secret is to have some inflation in the tube before fixing everything in place. Hmm! So we were in need of a 600 x 6.5 tube. Only the Brits could have an odd size. The manager took me into town to a tyre shop.
“Nope, cannot help you with a 600 x 6.5 tube but I have a 6.0 and a 7.0. Which one do you want?” I took the 600 x 7.0 tube. Then we trundled by a hardware store to try and get a tyre pump. We got the tube and tyre on faster than Superman could. The tube got inflated and I was ready to go. I was too late to get to the next stop, Temora. I did not like dickering around a strange airport in a strange aircraft close on last light. If the headwind slowed me down I could have had my blood pressure hitting red line trying to shoot a landing in the gloom or darkness.
Overnight in the nearby cabin park. I got a special deal with a taxi into town for a feed at the Veterans club and back again as his last customer for the night.
Next day it was a refuel and then I was off to Temora, 137 nm to the south. The weather was fine. I took off from runway 29 and bumbled along with an enroute top-up from the aux to the main. As the fuel moved from back to front and was burnt off, I adjusted the trim with the lever in the cabin roof above the left door.
Past Parkes and Forbes and on to Temora. I landed on runway 18 at Temora, a breeze with the headwind. It had been a slow flight from Narromine, so I taxied in for a top up. A young fellow my age got to chatting about how he was taking flying lessons, and what sort of aircraft was PUL? We traded notes. He was all smiles.
Not a lot of avionics to worry about.
I departed from runway 18 for Tocumwal and a refuel then on to Bendigo and the nearby new home base for PUL.
I landed on runway 18 at Tocumwal, taxied up to the fuel station and got fuel. There was no one around. I started up and taxied out and started backtracking on runway 18. I was halfway to the keys when I felt a lurch and PUL swung to the left. The tyre had gone yet again!
Same issue. Here I was stuck on a runway with a blown tyre. No one in sight. A curse?
I got on my portable VHF radio and called up on area. Silence. I made the call again and then a fellow replied and said he was listening. I asked him to advise centre of my problem. Centre must have wondered how airworthy this Auster was with two blown tyres in two days. He acknowledged the call and then asked if I needed a hand. He was a training flight out of Mangalore airport to the south. He landed and with his student we pushed PUL off the runway onto the grass verge.
I then called Rod on my mobile: “Err Rod, I have this tyre problem, again.” Now what to do?
An SUV came towards me. The driver introduced himself as Jamie Ball. He was a Toc A&P and saw my problem. “Need a hand?”
We managed to jack the left gear leg up to remove the tyre. Jamie said he had worked on an Auster wheel only a week before so he was current on how to remove them. Gold! The tyre casing was still intact even after this second adventure. We had the tube and tyre off in five minutes flat.
OK, now what to do. “I think that I have a 600 x 6 tube back in the workshop,” said Jamie. He found one in his store.
We fitted the tube and tyre and then another problem. How could we get some air into the tube? The penny dropped! I had that electric air pump that I had bought at Narromine. We connected up the power cable to the SUV and quickly inflated the tyre.
I was mobile again. I taxied PUL to Jamie’s hangar. He offered to house PUL for the night and then in the morning he was off to Kempsey on the far east coast in his Thorp T-18.
Jamie drove me to the motel and arranged to pick me up in the morning. I checked in and walked next door to the local golf club for a meal. Next day we hauled PUL out of the hangar. Jamie waited while I cranked up. He fired up his T-18 and departed for Kempsey.
I taxied out and as I passed yesterday’s blown tyre location I offered a silent prayer for no repeats. God, the good one, heard me.
I launched and departed south to Bendigo. Some minor cloud enroute, then past Shepparton and on to the southeast of Bendigo. Rod had said call him inbound; I did and he steered me to his strip at Myrtle Creek.
He had a smudge fire burning at one end of the strip to give me the wind direction. I came in over the tree line, dropped a nice side slip (the J2 has no flaps) and pulled up well before the end of the strip.
The ferry was over.
I taxied to Rod’s hangar. We put the aircraft away and over a cuppa I gave Rod the saga of my adventures.
I had kept both blown tubes. The second one, the Narromine special, had split all the way around it. No reason that we could figure.
It was too late in the day to give Rod a check flight. I returned a week later and we did some flying and shot some landings and ground handling to get him comfortable with flying his aircraft.
Enjoying every minute.
I have now flown an Auster J2 Arrow Special. An interesting machine. Drum brake shoes with heel brake pedals in the cabin. Not one but two blown tyres. Good memories for the future.
Tech stuff
Auster J2 Arrow Special, c/n 2384, was built in 1946 at Rearsby, Leicestershire in the UK by Auster Aircraft Ltd. It first went to Belgium as OO-AXF before coming to Australia, where it became VH-KAY on 31 May 1951. In 1958 it was re-registered as VH-RQL with the Royal Queensland Aero Club at Archerfield. The 75 hp Continental C-75-12 engine was replaced with a Lycoming 0-235-C1B of 115 hp. It then became an Auster J2 Special. In 1963 it became VH-PUL.
The J2 was built as a low cost private owner aircraft. Only 42 were made. In part this was due to financial problems with the Brits obtaining American engines for their aircraft.
The max. takeoff weight is 771 kg and the empty weight is 518 kg. There is a baggage shelf behind the seats for up to 20 kg of gear.
The main nose tank carries 60 litres of fuel and behind the seats there is a 40 litre auxiliary tank. An electric transfer pump moves around one litre a minute from the aux to the main tank. The extra fuel gives the aircraft real range. It is best to check the pump before start up to ensure that fuel can be transferred during a long flight. The main feeds to the engine by gravity. There is no engine driven pump.
Designed as a private aircraft, it had dual heel brake pedals installed later. Cruise is 95-105 kts IAS at 2350-2400 rpm. Plan on 25 LPH fuel burn.
Glide is 50 kts. Crosswind limit, said to be 8-10 kts. Climb is 52 kts, stalls at 30 kts. There is a small battery for the starter and the cabin roof mounted Bendix-King KY97 radio.
The panel has an ASI, Altimeter, VSI, Tacho, TC and Oil T&P gauges. No AH. The bat and ball TC is driven by an external venturi. Plan on 500 ft. after takeoff before it becomes reliable. There is an American compass on the top of the panel. The original P-12 compass must have been retired due to old age. Give three shots of the Ki-gas primer for a start up. Under the panel there is a cigarette lighter socket for use with an iPad in flight. I navigated with my iPad. The charts were in my flight folder ready at hand.
VH-PUL had done some 7,340 hours to June 2019 when I flew her.

60 Hurricane Safety Tips: Learn What To Do Before, During & After A Hurricane
Introduction
A hurricane also known as a typhoon (in Indian / Pacific Ocean) is a large storm. It typically is identified by a low-pressure center around which there is high speed storm system, high winds together with thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rains. Countries with major coast lines are especially at rise of such storms. They tend to occur every year.
At the focal point of hurricane, air sinks instead of rises. For a suitably strong storm, the air may sink over a layer deep enough to smother cloud formation, in this way making a clear region also called an "eye" of the storm.
Hurricanes take time to develop, usually a few days or more. They typically begin as thunderstorms then become stronger and stronger and grow in size into large scale weather disturbances.
Hurricanes are effectively followed and checked by climate satellites & weather aircraft due to their regularity and potential for destructive damage. In this way, weather agencies are constantly monitoring hurricane movements. Hence if you are in an affected area, it’s wise to keep up to date with latest warnings.
Hurricanes are defined by 5 categories
Category
Wind Speed (mph)

1
74-95
Very dangerous winds will produce some damage
2
96-110
Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage
3

Hurricane Season
Northern Hemisphere - May 1st to November 30th for the Atlantic and the Caribbean each year, and the Eastern Pacific hurricane season starts in mid-May.
Southern Hemisphere - Seasons are the opposite of those in the northern, of course, and their hurricane season peaks in March and April.
To help your preparation below are some tips. This is not meant to be exhaustive but more of a guide:-
Before Hurricane Impact
1. Most importantly keep up to date with latest weather updates Useful to have a portable (battery/crank up) radio in case of power failure caused by the hurricane.
2. Check and ensure everyone is accounted for including pets. Also that they know what to do.
3. You could, if you have the funds/space consider purchasing a back up generator with full tank if fuel and a reserve fuel on hand.
4. Prepare for flooding with sandbags, and suitable stock of brooms, mops squeegees, and other absorbents to help remove water and other deposits.
5. If your have trees in your garden or grounds, consider trimming or remove large trees that could fall and damage your or your neighbouring properties.
6. Prior to a storm remove patio furniture, yard decorations and anything not securely fastened.
7. If your child’s school or child care center is in an area at risk from hurricanes, find out how its emergency plans address hurricanes.
8. Inside you home ensure you have enough supplies including spare batteries, first aid kit. Attach tape over windows to prevent any shattering.
You can find suitable types of first aid kits at https://www.uberclimb.com/gear/First-Aid
9. On the exterior of your home, remove/tie down any potential loose objects. Also, close all your home windows and doors.
10.Install permanent shutters to protect windows, doors and skylights from flying debris and wind. You could also, board up windows/doors if required.
11.Strengthen your garage door by replacing it with a pressure-rated model or install a bracing system to prevent the door from failing.
12.If you have to evacuate, ensure all members of your family are accounted for. Check you have full tank of fuel and familiarise with evacuation route & destination. Evacuate as soon as possible when you receive an evacuation notice or you feel in immediate danger.
13.When moving outside avoid potential dangerous places. Especially avoid places where the riverbed is high or close to other waterways. Also, avoid areas likely to have landslides or flooding.
14.Normally, it is advisable to stay indoors whenever possible. Try and avoid venturing outdoors if not necessary. There could be flying debris and other hazards caused by the hurricane.
15.Try and avoid beaches where water can quickly flood in. Also best to avoid harbours areas/, river mouths. These will be venerable at at high tide/high water conditions such as caused by hurricanes.
16.It also advisable to stay away from low lying coastal areas as tides will be much higher and waves much stronger at full tide. Levee breaks also cause serious disaster.
If you are on or near alluvial areas be extra wary. These have increased risks of flooding. Exercise extreme caution because deltas (made of sediment carried by the river and deposited at the mouth of it) and floodplains (region made of accumulated sand carried by regular flooding) can easily be swamped.
18.Also note that river basins and dry riverbeds can also present a serious/life threatening danger of flooding during storms, hence avoid venturing there or leave the area as soon as possible.
Avoid developed land as this is normally made by breaking up hillsides and hence may contain unstable soil and terrain and therefore weaker ground. These areas may slide when downpours or water flooding loosen the ground.
20.Torrential downpour caused by hurricane weather s may cause mountain landslides, and alluvial cones at the foot of a mountain may especially vulnerable. Be especially wary of steep sloping lands of greater than 30° angles and heights of more than 5m may experience a landslide when there are heavy rains.
If you live in mobile home it is safer to go to a shelter.
22. Be sure to fully charge all mobile phones and other battery powered devices. Also, print out emergency contact information in case you lose power.
23.Stock up on groceries, water, medications, and any other necessities such as infant supplies to avoid the need for travel during the storm. You could storage water in a suitable container. One option can be found at
https://www.uberclimb.com/gear/hyrdration/naturehike-food-grade-water-container-large-capacity
24.Ideally purchase appliances that come with built in surge protection or consider a surge protected sockets power strips to plug your electrical devices.
25.Have some emergency cash in case you need to purchase items in areas where there is no power.
26.Check and repair (if necessary) roof drains, gutters and gaps in walls.
27.Remove TV and radio antennas as well satellite dishes from roof areas.
28.Ensure that any storm drains, culverts and catch basins are cleared of debris.
29.Prior to evacuation, bring identification, insurance papers, and other important documents for every family member in your family/group. Obey all special traffic signs and law enforcement orders. Bring adequate water, snacks, cash, and medications.
30.Consider creating a family communications plan that can help ensure that everyone knows how to connect and where to meet during an emergency.
31.Identify a family member or friend to serve as an out-of-state contact so all family members have a single point of contact. Write down or capture two contact methods for this individual such as telephone, cell phone, e-mail address, or social media. Determine safe places where your family can go for protection or to reconnect if separated.
32.Consider signup with American Red Cross Safe and Well social media app. Learn about the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Emergency Family Registry and Locator System.
33.Remember, texting may work best before, during, and after a disaster as a text message may be more likely to reach the recipient as it requires far less bandwidth to send than making a phone call.
34.Make sure that everyone, including children, knows how and when to call 9-1-1 for emergency help. Remember, only call 9-1-1 if there is a life-threatening emergency.
35.Store at least one emergency contact under the names “In Case of Emergency” or “ICE” for all mobile phones and devices. This will help someone identify your emergency contact if needed.
36.Those with special medical needs such as oxygen, dialysis etc should go to special needs shelters only. These typically only provide medical monitoring and limited medical care. Bring a caregiver if possible.
It is good preparation to build a storm shelter or tornado safe room. The safest place may be a small, interior, windowless room such as a closet or bathroom on the lowest level of the structure.
38.If possible ensure you have appliance thermometers in your refrigerator and freezer.
Where possible, store food on shelves that will be safely out of the way of (contaminated) water in case of flooding.
Purchase flood insurance in advance of the storm.
41.Create a disaster preparedness kit filled with critical supplies, including important documents and medications. You can find a list here.
42.It is advisable to keep your pets in a designated area in your home. Ensure to place enough water and food in that area. If your pet has special care needs, make sure to provide it. Animals, just like humans, can also feel scared.
During The Hurricane
43.Keep up-to-date on weather status especially in your area.
44.Shut down all gas fired equipment and shut off main gas values.
45.Conserve your cell phone battery by reducing the brightness of your screen, placing your phone in “airplane” mode, and closing unnecessary apps that you do not need.
46.Shut down all non-critical and non-essential electrical equipment.
47.Stay in a secure room and away from windows.
48.If your power goes out, report your outage immediately to your local power company.
Be aware, it typically takes about two feet of rushing water to carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and trucks.
After Hurricane
Ensure that the storm has completely passed before venturing outside.
Also, stay away from downed power lines, flooded areas, and debris. Treat all fallen wires and anything touching them as though they are energized/live. Immediately report downed lines to your power company.
52.If your power is cut, listen to your local radio stations for information and instructions.
If you are encountering hot weather, close drapes and blinds on the sunny side of your house, drink plenty of fluids, take your pets to a cool basement location, and go to an air-conditioned civic center, mall, or library if necessary to stay cool.
54.Remain patient. Every electric company has a detailed plan for restoring electrical service after a power outage.
If possible, try and turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting. Also, to help ensure your food will keep longer, try and minimise opening the fridge door as much as possible if the power goes out.
56.Check if your local community has a hurricane response plan.
57.Do not move seriously injured individuals. There may be falling debris even more likely if you have high rise buildings.
58.Provide search and rescue personnel with last known location and descriptions of any missing victims.
59.Clear out roof drains, and remove debris from roofs.
60.Check refrigerated items from spoilage if there has been a power failure.
On entering your home do an inspection of every room. However, be careful in entering every room. Keep a lookout for reptiles or other wild animals that may have been driven by floodwaters to higher ground. If you happen to find one, don’t try and handle the animal - instead contact local wildlife authority or agency.

The Vanishing World of Africa's Last Tribes
British photographer, Christopher Rimmer brings the last tribes of Africa to New York in a breath taking series of large-scale photographic portraits. Art Expo, New York, 2019 was abuzz with excitement following the official launch of Christopher Rimmer’s latest body of work, Confluence – Tradition and Modernity and the Last Tribes of the Kunene River.
Photographed over three years and presented by New York art dealer, Charles Slatterey, Confluence is a visual documentation of the last remaining tribes who live along the Kunene River, which forms a natural border between Namibia and Angola in South West Africa. The series examines the social changes taking place among these traditionally pastoral and semi nomadic ethnic groups, as a large flow of foreign capital opens up their traditional lands to Western modernity.
Rimmer has often used Southern Africa as a backdrop to his work indeed, his previous offering, Amapondo, which also debuted at Art Expo, New York in 2015, featured large scale portraits of the native Nguni cattle of South Africa who appear to enjoy a day at the beach, creating a unique and surreal backdrop to an oft featured subject of art history.
The celebrated portraitist was keen to avoid photographing animals as a subject for his latest body of work. Speaking on a very bad phone line recently from Southern India where he was on assignment for Condenast Traveller, Rimmer explains, ‘My first love is human portraiture and after the success of Amapondo, I was cautious of being pigeon holed as a photographer of animals alone. I have noticed that that my name is often prefaced in the media as such and it always makes me cringe as I know and have worked alongside some really amazing wildlife photographers from the BBC and National Geographic over the years who really know what they are doing.’
As a backdrop, Rimmer employed what is known as a vertical scrim in the film industry; basically a large piece of translucent fabric which is stretched over a portable frame, ‘ I wanted to simplify the portraits and cut down on as many distractions as possible so the viewer connected with the form and the expression of the subject, but I still wanted to achieve a sense of place at the same time. All of the photographs are taken in natural light, normally at dawn just as the sun is rising. The scrim is back lit and this reveals the landscape but in a very subtle way which does not distract from the subject who is lit by reflective light from the front.’
Charles Slattery is well known in New York as a private dealer of photography and in a career spanning over 30 years he has brokered sales of some of the biggest names in photography of the 20th Century. He has represented Rimmer’s work in the U.S. since 2010. ‘The majority of the photographers in my stable, so to speak, are no longer with us.’ he explains, ‘My wife and I were on vacation in Australia back in 2010 when I first saw Christopher Rimmer’s photography in a gallery in downtown Sydney. I was immediately struck by the simple graphic power of his work and I got in touch with him after we returned home and offered to represent him in the U.S. because I anticipated that there would be a good market for his work over here.’
Slatterey’s intervention has seen his protégé’s profile as an artist increase exponentially making the U.S. the biggest market for his work, ‘He sells well in the E.U. too, says Slatterey, but I suspect I have probably sold more of his work here than anybody else.’
Confluence features twenty large-scale portraits of the Ovahimba, Ovakahona, Ovazimba, Mwila, Herero and Macubal people, each with their own traditions, language, dress and spiritual traditions. Rimmer believes that the rapid changes occurring in the Kunene River area will have a corrosive effect on the distinct cultures of these tribes, ‘Where ever I travel these days I see the homogenization of culture,’ says Rimmer, ‘The free flow of capital and the advent of the mass media has made the rapidity of this transformation all the more profound. I doubt what I have captured in Confluence will still be present in any genuine cultural context within twenty years which made the documentation of these last remaining tribes all the more urgent.’
Christopher Rimmer, Confluence – Modernity & the Last Tribes of the Kunene River exhibited at Art Expo New York in April 2019 and other galleries.

-o-o-o-
Gordon Tracy adored his brother Virgil. Ever ask him and he’d deny it through his teeth. Did he understand how the man’s brain worked? Not a clue. Did they argue on a regular basis? All the time. But did he love him?
More than life itself.
So, to first have to catch the man as he fell, then watch helpless as he struggled and failed to breathe, his hands desperately scrabbling at Gordon’s uniform, and to see him ultimately lose the fight and slip away...
“John!”
Virgil’s lips were turning blue.
“JOHN!”
He checked his brother’s vitals. No breath, heart-rate struggling, but at speed. What the hell was wrong?
“Gordon?”
“Virgil’s collapsed. I need vitals now. Advise Kayo, I’m going to need help.”
John rattled off numbers.
The engineer was still wearing his fire suit, minus the helmet. Gordon tore at his clothes, shoving the zip down as far as it would go, freeing up the man’s chest. He positioned him ready for CPR, tipping his head back, checking his airways. There were no blockages he could detect.
What the hell had gone wrong?
The ship suddenly slowed and stopped in mid-air, John obviously taking control. A thud on the roof and the overhead hatch was thrown open.
Gordon tipped his brother’s head back and breathed into his lungs. He watched his chest.
It barely rose.
Pulse.
Fast, but struggling.
“Goddamnit, Virgil!”
Another breath. Barely any movement.
He ran his hands over Virgil’s chest, what the hell was going on? The man was made of frickin’ muscle. Why weren’t any of them working?
“Kayo, portable scanner, now!”
Pulse.
Nothing.
Shit!
The scanner slammed into his hand. He flicked over the controls. Chest cavity. Heart.
He projected a hologram above his brother.
The answer was obvious.
Virgil’s right lung was about a quarter of its normal size, his trachea and heart shoved towards the left.
Tension pneumothorax.
Collapsed lung. His brother literally could not breathe and now his heart could not beat because of the air pressure in his lung cavity.
Hell.
“John, tell me Em is standing beside you and she has trauma experience.”
“I’m here, Gordon.” The voice was calm, professional and directions began flowing forth. Kayo handed him a large needle, a catheter, and his brother’s undershirt was torn away. Gordon had seen Virgil do this to a child in Afghanistan three years ago, but he had never done it himself.
John transmitted a holographic example of exactly what he had to do, transposing it over Virgil’s scan. Em’s calm voice chanted him through it.
Gordon inserted a needle into his brother’s damaged ribcage.
A hiss of air under pressure and Virgil’s chest deflated.
A moment. Kayo’s fingers lay on her lover’s throat.
“He has a pulse.” And the vitals hovering above the hologram flared into life.
Except for respiration.
A count and Kayo, tipped his head back and began breathing for him.
Taping the oneway catheter to Virgil’s chest, Gordon grabbed the manual ventilator and, touching his sister’s shoulder, handed her the device.
Em’s voice was still calm, still controlled. “He will have to be monitored for further pneumothoraces, especially under ventilation. John is sending you to Wellington.”
Around them, Two roared to life, VTOL replaced by the power of her rear thrusters.
Virgil still wasn’t breathing on his own.
C’mon, Virgil, goddamn you.
-o-o-o-
Kayo couldn’t think. The plastic bag in her hand was keeping her fiancé alive. Squeeze release, squeeze release.
The mask hid the lips that kissed her. The body that had so wanted her yesterday, lay limp on the deck of his own ‘bird. In the spaces between her heartbeats, she was screaming in silence.
She paused his resuscitation, holding back, allowing the CO2 to accumulate in the hope it would trigger a breath. Count.
Nothing.
She breathed for him again.
In.
Out.
Please, love.
In.
Out.
Pause.
Across from her, Gordon’s hands were shaking in his bloody medical gloves. The clinical part of her mind still functioning at a basic emergency level noted that she would have to watch her brother for shock.
The body beneath her fingers suddenly shook and took in a shuddering breath.
Oh, god, thank everything.
“Gordon, oxygen mask.”
It landed in her hand and she strapped it over her lover’s face.
Another breath.
Another.
She ran her fingers through his hair and noted her own hands were shaking as badly as Gordon’s.
Virgil’s breathing evened out.
She set the oxygen level to compensate for his reduced lung capacity.
His eyelids flickered.
And he was looking at her, beautiful foggy brown eyes.
“Virgil?”
He blinked ever so slowly. Voice barely there. “K-Kay?”
She touched his cheek and his eyes closed. “Virgil?”
They blinked open slowly again. “Wha-happnd?”
“You’re going to be okay. You had some trouble breathing.”
“Oh.” She got the distinct impression he didn’t understand. “H-rts.”
“I know, love.”
“Lv you.” And he was drifting, eyelids drooping.
She ran her hand through his hair and he relaxed into her touch.
She bit her lip as her vision blurred.
-o-o-o-
The first thing Em learnt about the Tracy family in a crisis was that they moved as one.
She had been sitting in the lounge listening to the rescue. John had thrown up various camera angles into the centre of the circle. She had the horrible experience of watching Virgil once again cheat death, this time escaping from a wave of concrete instead of water.
The hand in hers tightened involuntarily and a glance in Scott’s direction tore her heart. Did this happen every time they went out? Was death always this close? Would she have to sit here and watch Scott risk his life day after day?
The future stretched out before her in a roadmap of pain.
And it hurt.
His blue eyes glanced in her direction, caught her stare and frowned. “Em?”
She bit her lip and realised she loved him.
A blink and a wave of fear.
She hardly knew him, yet...
“Are you okay?”
Bloody hell.
She found her voice. “I’m...I’m fine. I want to see Virgil as soon as he gets back.”
“You will. Even if I have to hog tie him.”
The skyscraper fire was defeated, clearly demonstrating International Rescue’s superior technology and smooth teamwork, and the team was heading home.
Scott had led her out onto the balcony for the chance of spotting Thunderbird One on approach, when Gordon’s panicked voice yelled over comms.
“Doctor Harris!” And she found herself conducting a needle decompression of Virgil’s chest cavity via remote.
The terror on Scott’s face tore her heart in two.
The moment Virgil was stabilised, the Tracy clan deployed. John was somehow flying both Thunderbird Two and Shadow. Thunderbird One shook the house as she smoothly returned to her hanger below the pool.
Alan appeared in the room moments later still in his uniform, the stench of burnt building following him.
Scott was briefing his Grandmother and Uncle Crispin. Penelope and Parker stood quietly beside them as Em gave what medical information she could.
And then they were all moving.
Scott’s hand in hers, he gave her a badge. She blinked at the IR symbol.
“Temporary comms, so you can keep in contact with Kayo and Gordon. Tap to activate.” And he was leading her to the elevator.
The rush of movement. Thunderbird Two’s hanger, ever so empty of the great machine.
Tracy Two.
Scott swearing at his hoverchair.
John hurrying past, muttering a confirmation of Thunderbird Shadow’s return to the island before he slipped into the cockpit, Alan not far behind.
Uncle Crispin holding their grandmother’s hand and speaking kind words.
Scott not holding hers.
-o-o-o-
Em Harris had gotten used to being alone.
She didn’t grow up alone. She had a beautiful baby brother, a cherished mum and a dad who told wonderful stories and was paid to write them. Their family had travelled the world. She had landed on every continent on the planet. Explored rainforests, deserts, cities, she had spent most of her high school years doing schoolwork via a satellite in a tent, a van, in a three star hotel.
It had been a challenge, but it had been a life.
The one time she had stopped moving was to attend medical school, planting herself firmly in her home state of Western Australia. Even then she had darted between an apartment in Perth and the family home further south in Margaret River.
She discovered that despite her love of traveling the world, she had firm roots, and she would always have a home in those tree covered hills not far from where the Indian Ocean met the Southern.
It had been fate that had seen her and her family in Indonesia in 2060. The one place no-one should have been, yet so many were and had lost their lives.
Somehow she had survived, despite losing everything.
She had crawled back to that house in Margaret River and learnt how to live her life again.
With half her body.
All by herself.
And she had gotten used to it.
But now, over five years later, as she sat staring out at the city of Wellington, surrounded by luxury, and the most caring family on the planet, she had never felt more alone.
She stared down at the city lights and knew one of them was Wellington’s hospital where a caring man was slowly recovering. His outlook was good. Em had made sure everything was covered, liaising with his doctors.
The cause had been, as suspected, a poorly healed rib amongst the train wreck down the man’s side. All that strenuous activity over the past month or so had seen that rib erode the surface of his lung. His body would heal partially and then more damage would be done. It had only been a matter of time.
Virgil had been bloody lucky the last straw had occurred when it did. If he had been alone, he would have died.
There had been surgery to prevent it from happening again, and Em had made sure that amongst it all there was some skin grafts and long-term wound repair. She did her best to keep her word to Kayo and do her best for Virgil. She had strong hope that once recovered, the rescue operative would be able to function with little or no pain.
Which is what lay at the crux of her current problem.
From the moment Virgil was injured, Scott had retreated. She had lost the lovely joking man she had grown to admire, and yes, she had admitted it to herself, love, goddamnit, she’d fallen in love with a man who currently didn’t exist.
She looked down at her hands in her lap. They looked small and helpless, though she knew they weren’t. These hands had saved lives. Even saved her own.
Was it stupid to miss holding a man’s hand?
She shook herself. She was stronger than this. And it wasn’t as if the man had left her or kicked her out, he was just pre-occupied.
With his brother.
She had been witness to the awesome power of the Tracy family. Not just the way they moved wealth, but the close-knit inner workings of the family. How if one fell, everything stopped. Froze for the moment, and then the gears shifted, brothers moved and the machine started again.
Even two operatives down, International Rescue was still functioning.
And it broke her heart.
It was not sustainable.
As a doctor, as a friend, and as a woman in love, she was watching a family slowly killing itself. It was as if they had been cursed with a burden. Who had started this? Who had set them on this path? And why?
Sure, the great Jeff Tracy. But what drove them? And quite frankly it was like cattle to the slaughter. If this continued, she had no doubt that the brothers would eventually lose everything.
She had finally seen Virgil’s medical records and she had had to leave the room. She was a professional, but this was ridiculous.
Bullet wounds? What the hell? How did such a kind and giving man end up with so many scars on top of scars?
How had it been allowed to happen?
And what would she see if she dug up Scott’s medical records? What scars did the man hide under his shirt? What had those beautiful blue eyes witnessed? What would her fingers have to trace if she ever had the chance to touch him?
She closed her eyes.
Who was she bloody kidding?
God, it all just hurt.
“Doctor Harris? You okay?”
She startled. Gordon. The one brother she hadn’t managed to really say anything to other than the words necessary to save his brother’s life.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I was miles away.”
He frowned at her. It was startling to see Virgil’s eyes staring out of a face so different in shape and colour. They were so different, yet so brothers, even their voices echoed each other. “You sure? You need anything?”
“No, no...I’m fine.”
“Okay, I’m sorry, but after recent events, I am so not taking that line at face value ever again.” He approached her and held out his hand. “And I apologise, it is ridiculous that I haven’t formally introduced myself. Hi, I’m Gordon Tracy, your local aquanaut and roving ocean saviour.” And there was that quirky smile, so echoing his eldest brother’s that her heart lurched.
She reached out her hand automatically and took his. So warm. What was it with Tracy brothers and warm hands? “I’m very pleased to meet you, Gordon.” She blinked and realised he was still in his IR uniform. “Have you been out again?”
He took a step back and rubbed the back of his head with one hand. “Ah, yeah, that cyclone off Broome made landfall earlier. Took out Port Hedland again. Had to lend a hand with a ship that had run aground.”
“Alan didn’t have to do that same manoeuvre Virgil did, did he?”
Gordon snorted. “No. Besides, I think Virgil is the only one who could have pulled it off anyway.” He sighed. “Thank you so much for your help in saving his life.”
She smiled sadly. “I’m glad I was there. You did very well. That is not an easy procedure.”
“Yeah, well, I had expert guidance and all the best tech to back me up.” And he was grinning at her.
“How can you do that?” She said it, and then regretted it immediately. She hadn’t meant to say anything. Shit.
But the aquanaut simply tipped his head to one side. “What? Laugh it off?”
She had no choice but to nod.
“Better than the alternative.” And there was that smile again, full of mischief. “I’d rather laugh than cry. Far too much of that out there already.” The smile turned back into that grin. “Gordon Tracy, saving the planet, one laugh at a time.”
She had to admit it was infectious, and, despite herself, she smiled.
Gordon was shorter than his three elder brothers, consequently he didn’t have to bend to catch her expression. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
To her horror, her vision blurred.
She blinked madly as Gordon frowned at her. “It’s nothing. I’m fine.” She straightened in her harness. “I’m just tired.”
“Is there anything I can do to help?”
She stared at him. His eyes so like Virgil’s, his expression so like Scott’s, so damn Tracy, so damn selfless. “No. No, I’m fine.”
He was still frowning. “You’re sure?”
She reached out a hand and touched his arm. Firm muscle beneath tough fabric. “Go get yourself cleaned up. It is me who should be helping you.” She forced a smile. “Do you adore your coffee like Virgil?”
“Hah! Oh, god, no. That relationship defies definition.” He was grinning again. Distraction achieved. “Though I won’t say no to a hot chocolate, if you’ll join me?” His eyes were glittering with mischief.
Her smile was far more genuine this time. “Deal. I’ll see if I can dig up some marshmallows. Go slip into something more comfortable.”
He wiggled his eyebrows at her. For god’s sake, this brother was a loon. She found herself laughing. “Go, get.”
“Going, going.” And he turned, waving an arm in her direction.
She smiled after him. A sigh, and she headed towards the kitchen.
-o-o-o-
“Scott, you there, bro?”
The eldest Tracy was gliding down the corridor towards his brother’s hospital room as Gordon’s voice broke through his thoughts. He stopped, shifting to one side, out of the way of general hospital traffic. Another three weeks of these damn casts were going to send him insane. “Yeah, Gords? How’s that ship?”
“Ship’s all good and dandy, but you might want to get back here.”
“What? Why?”
“I think I broke your girlfriend.”
“What?! Girlfriend? What the hell did you do?”
“I don’t know! One minute we were just talking, she was smiling, even. Next she had tears in her eyes.”
“You made her cry?”
“Hell, if I know! You just need to get back here.” A sigh. “Look, Scott, it has been a shit of a week. Both of you came home for rest, and there has been anything but. Even I know that can’t be good. Virg is in good hands, you know that. You need to take some time for you and Em.”
“Gordon-“
“No, bro, no stoic leader bullshit, I can see that expression from here. Virgil isn’t in his right mind to kick your ass, and I’m his backup on this.”
“Since when?”
“Since birth, you moron.”
“Gordon-“
“She’s worth it, Scott.”
That shut him up.
“Come home, bro, please.”
A breath. “FAB.”
As Gordon signed off, Scott let his eyes close for a moment. His brother was right. It had been a shit week. Panic, doctors and a brother and sister in pain. He dropped his head into his one functional hand.
“Are you alright, sir?” A nurse was frowning down at him.
Scott straightened. “Oh, I’m sorry. I’m fine, thank you.” A forced smile.
“Oh, Mr Tracy, I didn’t recognise you.” And the concern shifted to dazzled starstruck.
Oh, for the love of- “Could you excuse me, please?” He moved the hoverchair assertively in the direction of Virgil’s room. The woman was forced to move or be rundown. She moved.
Scott slapped his hand on the scanner held out by their security guard, this time it was Gerald, and waved his ident card at the door.
Gerald held the door as he hovered through.
Virgil’s eyes caught him the moment he slipped in. “Hey, Scott.” His voice was still little more than a rasp, but they had been reassured he was healing. Em had been one hell of an advocate. Hell, he swore the staff here dreaded the sound of her hoverscoot in the hallway. She took no shit, and backed by the name Tracy, Virgil had had nothing but the best of care.
Kayo was sitting beside the bed. Her expression stormy. Virgil was pale.
Scott frowned. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing.” Virgil never could lie worth anything.
Kayo glared daggers at Scott.
Okay, so he wasn’t welcome here at the moment.
“I need to go back to the house. Can I get you anything?”
“No, I’m good.” The oxygen cannula under Virgil’s nose twitched.
Scott sighed, and shook his head. “God, Virg, you lie like crap. Stop trying.” He turned to Kayo. “Remember, he’s fragile. You bust him, I bust you. Understood?”
“Scott!” Virgil’s rasp was ridiculous.
Kayo’s tone was firm. “Understood. As long as you consider it mutual.”
“Agreed.”
“What the hell?!” And Virgil was trying to cough. “G’dam’it. Ow.” Kayo immediately jumped in to steady him.
Scott frowned. “Take it easy, Virg. Just stating terms.”
His brother struggled to get himself under control and Scott fought the urge to rush over. Kayo had this.
Virgil glared at him through his eyebrows. His eyes clearly warned him off touching Kayo in any shape or form. Scott reached over and squeezed a foot through the bed covers and offered him a small smile.
Eventually the coughing fit passed and Virgil lay back against his pillows exhausted. Now Kayo was glaring at Scott.
“Sorry.” He swallowed. “Call me if you need anything.” And he was backing out the door.
“Gerald, could you please call Andre? Ask him to meet me with the car out front.”
“Yes, sir.”
Scott stared at the door a moment before gliding back down the corridor.

The house in Kelburn had been bought out of necessity some years ago. With Wellington being the nearest major city to Tracy Island and consequently the closest major hospital, it made sense that the Tracy family own a residence in the area.
It was white, tall and had a great view. A pool out the back, balconies and large windows. As close to home as they could get without the tropical weather. It was used occasionally for visits to the city, but mostly as a convalescence residence. Particularly if a family member could go home, but couldn’t fly out to the island. It was likely they would be here for a few weeks yet.
Andre helped Scott make his way into the house, but then Scott handed the man a credit card and told him to grab Cecil and go treat each other at the corner cafe.
“He was all ’Don’t you dare spoil this for me, Gordon, this man is my absolute hero’. And what does he do? Makes a complete goofball of himself all by himself.” His brother chuckled. “Yeah, Virg, still hero worships Kip. Your uncle does right by him, though, and we have learnt a lot. But Virgil. Such a laugh.”
Scott slipped as quietly as he could into the room. Em was smiling at Gordon. “When I was little, he used to come visit and tell my brother and I such amazing stories. It all seemed so far away at first, but then when Dad started writing and we started travelling, those stories came to life. Uncle Crispin usually hunted us down. Mum said ‘Crispy’ should have written like my Dad and made a little money on the side. But he claimed he was more interested in saving lives than blabbing about it.”
“He has certainly made a career of it.”
“Yeah, he has.”
The room fell quiet.
“Where are your parents nowadays?”
“Uh.” Em paled. “They’ve passed on.”
“Oh, I am sorry to hear that. Do you see your brother?”
“No...uh, no. He’s gone, too. It’s just me.” Her smiled was forced. “And Uncle Crispin.”
“Sorry.”
“No, it’s okay. It was a few years ago now.”
“That doesn’t make it any easier.”
“No, no, it doesn’t. But Mum and Dad and Jeth wouldn’t want me moping, so I do my best to keep things moving.” Another forced smile. “Do my best and always remember them. It is all I can really do.”
“Jeth? Jeth Harris?” Gordon sat up straight in his chair. “Jeth Harris, author of ‘Twenty-one Undersea Adventures on a Wednesday Afternoon’?”
Em smirked. “Yes, my Dad wrote children’s books.”
“Oh my god! I adored that book. It was one of the reasons why I got into marine biology. I still have it on my bookshelf. He is related to Kip Harris?” Gordon laughed out loud. “Virg is going to shit a brick.” An indrawn breath. “But he died in 2060, a victim of the tsunami in Indonesia, brought on by...aw, hell.”
Em had her hands up just as Scott’s heart fell through the floor. “Gordon, please it is in the past. None of us could have done anything.”
“But that was the Hood. Oh, god, will that asshole ever stop....goddamnit! I am so sorry.”
“There is no reason for you to apologise, Gordon. It wasn’t anyone’s fault except that bastard, and he’s dead. You have no idea how much I hope he suffered at the very end.”
Gordon’s eyes darkened to little more than flint. “Not enough. Never enough.”
Em reached out and touched Gordon’s arm. Scott tensed, despite himself.
“He breaks us, he wins. He’s never going to break us, so he will never win.”
Gordon’s lips were thin. “If you knew half of what that man has done to this family...” He shook his head. “And he took yours. I just...He is lucky he is dead. Damn lucky.” And it was that very moment that Gordon caught sight of his brother hovering by the door. “Shit.”
Em turned her beautiful pale blue eyes in his direction. They widened. “Scott?”
