these days, taka keep busy in any way she knows how: too long with her own thoughts can be dangerous and make her itch to return to her cocaine habit. but they've done a good job of staying clean. taka doesn't need to work for money—his mother sends him gobs of money to curry his favor, and his father and stepmother have nobody else to spoil—but he does work to stay busy, spinning tunes at the boom boom room; modeling for small indie publications and brands; and gaining some traction as a music producer.

Spread

In Australia 1,098 people are currently confirmed infected and seven people have died. We’re just hitting the stage where it’s starting to spread through the general population, although the majority of cases are still those who had overseas contact. (x)

Closing down

Self-isolation and work-from-home is implemented on a voluntary basis for those not infected (mandatory for those who are, or who have just returned from overseas), but will likely become mandatory within two weeks. Social distancing is recommended when people need to go out. Large gatherings are no longer allowed. Schools are still open, but will also likely close when school holidays start in a couple of weeks. Borders are now closed or about to be, both for overseas travellers and internal state boundaries. Some states, like Western Australia, have declared a state of emergency, and/or are considering quarantine zones (ie. hotels, or Rottnest Island in the case of W.A.). The resulting economic meltdown, which is sending several million workers streaming into the unemployment line, is outpacing the federal government’s efforts to respond. With each day, an unprecedented stoppage gathers force as restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas and offices close to shield themselves from the disease.

Dramatic slowdown in growth predicted (Wall Street Journal) Analysts now project U.S. growth could shrink at rates far worse than the 2008 global recession, ending weeks of cautious optimism about the economy’s ability to withstand the fallout from the coronavirus. Analysts at Goldman Sachs yesterday said they expect U.S. growth to contract 24% in the second quarter, a rate nearly five times as large as the bank’s previous forecast of a 5% decline. Goldman said a decrease of that magnitude would far outpace the largest quarterly drop in gross domestic product on record--during the first quarter of the 1958 recession, when the U.S. economy contracted 10%. “The sudden stop in U.S. economic activity in response to the virus is unprecedented, and the early data points over the last week strengthen our confidence that a dramatic slowdown is indeed already underway,” the bank said in its report.​

Italy virus cases soar again; NY eyes temporary hospitals (AP) The coronavirus pandemic took an increasingly bleak toll Saturday in the U.S. and Europe, producing staggering caseloads in New York and Italy and setting off a desperate scramble to set up thousands of additional hospital beds at convention centers and college campuses. Italy, at the heart of western Europe’s rampaging outbreak, announced 793 new deaths and 6,557 new cases. In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said state officials were scouring the globe for desperately needed medical supplies as confirmed coronavirus cases soared above 10,000 statewide. The state is reviewing four possible locations for temporary hospitals, which would be operated by the Army Corps of Engineers.

As virus grips nation, advocates move to halt evictions (AP) On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced a proposed $1.5 trillion package that he said includes “immediate relief to renters and homeowners” by suspending evictions and foreclosures for 60 days. But, it turns out, the vast majority of renters will not be covered by the protections. That’s because the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s plan only covers single-family homes with loans through the Federal Housing Administration--roughly 8 million homeowners, most of whom are not under foreclosure, according to HUD. That compares to the roughly 43 million households who rented in 2019, according to the U.S. Census. Roughly half rent their home from an individual investor, while the other half rent from a business or multi-unit property owner. The ones renting from a business will not receive any protections, according to HUD’s proposal. While housing advocates praised the Trump administration package as an “important first step,” they said that by excluding renters, an often economically vulnerable population, it does not go nearly far enough.

Thousands of Americans stranded abroad as money, patience run out (Washington Post) Daniel Rico was relaxing in his pajamas in a hotel room after a day biking through Peru’s Sacred Valley when his phone rang. The Peruvian president was about to make an announcement related to the coronavirus pandemic, his tour guide said. Rico went online and saw that Peru’s borders would close in roughly 24 hours.

Minutes later, the 33-year-old financial analyst from New Jersey and a handful of other foreigners were being driven hastily in the dark along winding Incan roads. But when Rico arrived at the Cusco airport at 2 a.m. Monday morning, he found thousands of other travelers clamoring to leave and no available tickets. Skirmishes broke out as people pushed to the front of the line, he said.

Rico and nine other Americans are now stuck in a hotel in downtown Cusco, where a 15-day quarantine is enforced by soldiers with face masks and rifles. A police officer recently shoved Rico against a wall, he said, and threatened to arrest him for going out to buy groceries.

“Things are getting bad here,” said Rico, whose wife is worriedly waiting for him at home. “Fly me to Texas or Louisiana. Drop me in Wyoming, and I’ll rent a car. But we need to get out of this country.”

From Cusco to Casablanca to Cape Town, thousands of Americans like Rico are currently stuck overseas as the rapidly expanding pandemic has caused a cascade of countries to close their borders.

As their money, medications and patience runs out, Americans have watched in mounting frustration as other countries have quickly evacuated their citizens. Feeling abandoned by their government, thousands have turned to social media for help and solace, joining online groups with names like “Americans Stuck in Peru,” “American Citizens Stranded In Guatemala” and “Stay Strong, Quarantine On.”

Their sense of panic deepened on Thursday when the State Department announced American citizens overseas should return to the United States immediately “unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period.”

The announcement, coupled with the initial lack of a plan to help Americans come home, has drawn criticism from lawmakers whose inboxes are filling with emails from furious constituents trapped overseas.

“This is a source of great frustration,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) told The Washington Post. “This administration has made a mess of this by failing to take the necessary actions. We’ve been working for weeks to try to get these Americans who are stranded abroad a way to get home. We’ve watched as other countries have chartered airlines to get their citizens out.”

Introduction

 A hurricane also known as a typhoon (in Indian / Pacific Ocean) is a large storm.  It typically is identified by a low-pressure center around which there is high speed storm system, high winds together with thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rains.  Countries with major coast lines are especially at rise of such storms. They tend to occur every year.

 At the focal point of hurricane, air sinks instead of rises. For a suitably strong storm, the air may sink over a layer deep enough to smother cloud formation, in this way making a clear region also called an "eye" of the storm.

 Hurricanes take time to develop, usually a few days or more. They typically begin as thunderstorms then become stronger and stronger and grow in size into large scale weather disturbances.

 Hurricanes are effectively followed and checked by climate satellites & weather aircraft due to their regularity and potential for destructive damage. In this way, weather agencies are constantly monitoring hurricane movements.  Hence if you are in an affected area, it’s wise to keep up to date with latest warnings.

 Northern Hemisphere - May 1st to November 30th for the Atlantic and the Caribbean each year, and the Eastern Pacific hurricane season starts in mid-May.

 Southern Hemisphere - Seasons are the opposite of those in the northern, of course, and their hurricane season peaks in March and April.

 To help your preparation below are some tips. This is not meant to be exhaustive but more of a guide:-

 Before Hurricane Impact

 1.    Most importantly keep up to date with latest weather updates Useful to have a portable (battery/crank up) radio in case of power failure caused by the hurricane.

 2.    Check and ensure everyone is accounted for including pets. Also that they know what to do.

 3.    You could, if you have the funds/space consider purchasing a back up generator with full tank if fuel and a reserve fuel on hand.

 4.    Prepare for flooding with sandbags, and suitable stock of brooms, mops squeegees, and other absorbents to help remove water and other deposits.

 5.    If your have trees in your garden or grounds, consider trimming or remove large trees that could fall and damage your or your neighbouring properties.

 6.    Prior to a storm remove patio furniture, yard decorations and anything not securely fastened.

 7.    If your child’s school or child care center is in an area at risk from hurricanes, find out how its emergency plans address hurricanes.

 8.    Inside you home ensure you have enough supplies including spare batteries, first aid kit. Attach tape over windows to prevent any shattering.

 9.    On the exterior of your home, remove/tie down any potential loose objects. Also, close all your home windows and doors.  

 10.Install permanent shutters to protect windows, doors and skylights from flying debris and wind. You could also, board up windows/doors if required.

 11.Strengthen your garage door by replacing it with a pressure-rated model or install a bracing system to prevent the door from failing.

 12.If you have to evacuate, ensure all members of your family are accounted for. Check you have full tank of fuel and familiarise with evacuation route & destination. Evacuate as soon as possible when you receive an evacuation notice or you feel in immediate danger.

 13.When moving outside avoid potential dangerous places. Especially avoid places where the riverbed is high or close to other waterways. Also, avoid areas likely to have landslides or flooding.

 14.Normally, it is advisable to stay indoors whenever possible. Try and avoid venturing outdoors if not necessary. There could be flying debris and other hazards caused by the hurricane.

 15.Try and avoid beaches where water can quickly flood in. Also best to avoid harbours areas/, river mouths. These will be venerable at at high tide/high water conditions such as caused by hurricanes.

 16.It also advisable to stay away from low lying coastal areas as tides will be much higher and waves much stronger at full tide. Levee breaks also cause serious disaster.

 If you are on or near alluvial areas be extra wary. These have increased risks of flooding. Exercise extreme caution because deltas (made of sediment carried by the river and deposited at the mouth of it) and floodplains (region made of accumulated sand carried by regular flooding) can easily be swamped.

 18.Also note that river basins and dry riverbeds can also present a serious/life threatening danger of flooding during storms, hence avoid venturing there or leave the area as soon as possible.

 Avoid developed land as this is normally made by breaking up hillsides and hence may contain unstable soil and terrain and therefore weaker ground. These areas may slide when downpours or water flooding loosen the ground.

 20.Torrential downpour caused by hurricane weather s may cause mountain landslides, and alluvial cones at the foot of a mountain may especially vulnerable.  Be especially wary of steep sloping lands of greater than 30° angles and heights of more than 5m may experience a landslide when there are heavy rains.

 If you live in mobile home it is safer to go to a shelter.

 22.     Be sure to fully charge all mobile phones and other battery powered devices. Also, print out emergency contact information in case you lose power.

 23.Stock up on groceries, water, medications, and any other necessities such as infant supplies to avoid the need for travel during the storm. You could storage water in a suitable container. One option can be found at

 24.Ideally purchase appliances that come with built in surge protection or consider a surge protected sockets power strips to plug your electrical devices.

 25.Have some emergency cash in case you need to purchase items in areas where there is no power.

 26.Check and repair (if necessary) roof drains, gutters and gaps in walls.

 27.Remove TV and radio antennas as well satellite dishes from roof areas.

 28.Ensure that any storm drains, culverts and catch basins are cleared of debris.

 29.Prior to evacuation, bring identification, insurance papers, and other important documents for every family member in your family/group. Obey all special traffic signs and law enforcement orders. Bring adequate water, snacks, cash, and medications.

 30.Consider creating a family communications plan that can help ensure that everyone knows how to connect and where to meet during an emergency.

 31.Identify a family member or friend to serve as an out-of-state contact so all family members have a single point of contact. Write down or capture two contact methods for this individual such as telephone, cell phone, e-mail address, or social media. Determine safe places where your family can go for protection or to reconnect if separated.

 32.Consider signup with American Red Cross Safe and Well social media app.  Learn about the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Emergency Family Registry and Locator System.

 33.Remember, texting may work best before, during, and after a disaster as a text message may be more likely to reach the recipient as it requires far less bandwidth to send than making a phone call.

 34.Make sure that everyone, including children, knows how and when to call 9-1-1 for emergency help. Remember, only call 9-1-1 if there is a life-threatening emergency.

 35.Store at least one emergency contact under the names “In Case of Emergency” or “ICE” for all mobile phones and devices. This will help someone identify your emergency contact if needed.

 36.Those with special medical needs such as oxygen, dialysis etc should go to special needs shelters only. These typically only provide medical monitoring and limited medical care. Bring a caregiver if possible.

 It is good preparation to build a storm shelter or tornado safe room. The safest place may be a small, interior, windowless room such as a closet or bathroom on the lowest level of the structure.

 38.If possible ensure you have appliance thermometers in your refrigerator and freezer.

 Where possible, store food on shelves that will be safely out of the way of (contaminated) water in case of flooding.

 Purchase flood insurance in advance of the storm.

 41.Create a disaster preparedness kit filled with critical supplies, including important documents and medications.  You can find a list here.

 42.It is advisable to keep your pets in a designated area in your home. Ensure to place enough water and food in that area. If your pet has special care needs, make sure to provide it. Animals, just like humans, can also feel scared.

  During The Hurricane

 43.Keep up-to-date on weather status especially in your area.

 44.Shut down all gas fired equipment and shut off main gas values.

 45.Conserve your cell phone battery by reducing the brightness of your screen, placing your phone in “airplane” mode, and closing unnecessary apps that you do not need.

 46.Shut down all non-critical and non-essential electrical equipment.

 47.Stay in a secure room and away from windows.

 48.If your power goes out, report your outage immediately to your local power company.

 Be aware, it typically takes about two feet of rushing water to carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and trucks.

 After Hurricane

 Ensure that the storm has completely passed before venturing outside.

 Also, stay away from downed power lines, flooded areas, and debris. Treat all fallen wires and anything touching them as though they are energized/live. Immediately report downed lines to your power company.

 52.If your power is cut, listen to your local radio stations for information and instructions.

 If you are encountering hot weather, close drapes and blinds on the sunny side of your house, drink plenty of fluids, take your pets to a cool basement location, and go to an air-conditioned civic center, mall, or library if necessary to stay cool.

 54.Remain patient. Every electric company has a detailed plan for restoring electrical service after a power outage.

 If possible, try and turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting. Also, to help ensure your food will keep longer, try and minimise opening the fridge door as much as possible if the power goes out.

 56.Check if your local community has a hurricane response plan.

 57.Do not move seriously injured individuals. There may be falling debris even more likely if you have high rise buildings.

 58.Provide search and rescue personnel with last known location and descriptions of any missing victims.

 59.Clear out roof drains, and remove debris from roofs.

 60.Check refrigerated items from spoilage if there has been a power failure.

 On entering your home do an inspection of every room. However, be careful in entering every room. Keep a lookout for reptiles or other wild animals that may have been driven by floodwaters to higher ground. If you happen to find one, don’t try and handle the animal - instead contact local wildlife authority or agency.

Emirates flight attendant Cara Eastman reveals how she packs her suitcase to perfection

An international flight attendant has revealed the secrets to packing the perfect suitcase, including why you should always roll your clothes and carry a hand steamer.

Cara Eastman, from Perth in Western Australia, has been working for Emirates since October 2016 and has been to more than 45 countries.

Ms Eastman said the essential items she can’t travel without included beauty products, toiletries and even a hand steamer.

Ms Eastman told News Corp she never boards without her lip balm, eye mask and moisturiser so she can keep her skin hydrated during long-haul flights.

When packing her suitcase, she always rolls up her clothes to maximise space.

‘I’m a big fan of rolling my clothing when I pack to save space and prevent creases in your garments. I like to keep things simple when I’m travelling and often just bring jeans and T-shirts for layovers,’ she said.

Ms Eastman said if she’s bringing nice outfits for special occasions, she usually stores them in a separate bag in her luggage and she even packs a hand steamer.

For carry-on luggage, she said you should always have your toiletries on board. 

‘On-board you should make sure you have toiletries to help you feel refreshed and comfortable, something to keep you entertained once you’re in the air and items that you will need upon landing,’ she said.

When deciding on what to pack, Ms Eastman said she always checks ahead to the weather forecast to see what her destination looks like on the other end.

By checking ahead, she’s able to pack ‘something appropriate’ for when she lands.

‘I also take note of whether I’m going to be landing in the day or at night as well as the kind of temperature I will need to adjust to,’ Ms Eastman said.

In August, Emirates flight attendant Elizabeth Gallagher revealed how she keeps her skin looking flawless on board every time.

‘I believe that it’s important to bring hydrating products on-board any flight. Pre-flight I like to ensure I perform a facial that includes cleansing, toner, serum and moisturising products,’ the 30-year-old told Daily Mail Australia.

‘This provides my skin with a good dose of vitamin D and self care prior to long haul adventures. 

‘While on-board, I usually ensure that I carry facial wipes to remove makeup if needed and follow this with the use of my favourite facial moisturiser to minimise any dehydration my skin may be exposed to, while flying.

‘It’s also a great idea to pack a lip balm to prevent dryness during the flight. For those travelling in business and first class, travellers’ amenity kits include a variety of beauty products that are sure to freshen one’s skin during the flight.’

Ms Gallagher – who has worked for the airline for eight years – said she noticed changes in her skin when she started flying.

‘I noticed that my skin became sensitive to the cabin air especially on long haul flights. To help reduce sensitivity and combat these effects, I always try to increase my water intake and carry an extremely hydrating moisturiser for when I replenish my make-up,’ she said.

In her carry-on baggage, she said she always packs her multi-vitamins, essential beauty products, iPad, toothbrush, a change of comfortable clothes and an iPhone.

Nicknames: I have a few! But Zeycorgs is what we usually use. It’s an amalgam of my name and “corgi”, in honour of my previous tumblr handle (someone on this site recommended that and I’ve been using it ever since. If they’re reading this, message me?! I’m hardly called by my real name anymore!) I’ve also got the classic Zeyno.

There’s also some gems that come up every once in a while, which are mostly inspired by my misspelled/warped name. To give some examples: Zeynop, Zoynop, Zeynek, Zeyper, and, my newest favourite, Zoypor

Zodiac Sign: Leo! Once you’re through the Libra rising exterior, unmistakeably a Leo.

Height: 170 cm

Hogwarts House: Slytherin, Ravenclaw comes a close second.

The last thing I googled: “tv tropes story gen”. It gives you some tropes you can build the foundation of a story from. I use it to practice!

Favorite musicians: Hmm! I’m with treefin on this one, I like a lot of different stuff I can’t easily pinpoint. I’ve a soft spot for indie/folk/soft ™. But for bands Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Duman (Turkish rock band. I know, a classic. But they’re really good!), KALEO, Pendulum, Breaking Benjamin, ABBA come first to mind. Love Hans Zimmer’s, Alexandre Desplat and Craig Armstrong’s music. I’m looking into Feist atm. Been a fan of Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi for allegedly 18 years.!

Dream job: Honestly, anything that I’ll be happy doing. Though I’ve always felt like it’s going to end up being science/medical related. Whatever I’ll end up doing though, I don’t think I’ll ever give up on writing.

Dream trip: I saw most of (Western/Central) Europe so hm.. Scandinavia, Russia, South Africa, Australia/New Zealand, Thailand, South and North America. So… Every continent?! I hope I’ll have enough time to see all these places.

Instruments: Piano (mediocre), but I can’t read notes if my life depended on it. I prefer tackling it by ear.

Languages: Turkish, English, French (rusty) and Spanish (smol)

Favorite songs: Hm! Well the matter of all time favourites is always tricky, but songs I always go back to are Dead Letter Circus’ Tremors (found it in a Dishonored music video?!<3), This is the Kit’s Bashed Out (found it while looking for my Crime and Punishment playlist!), Wye Oak’s Civilian, KALEO’s All the Pretty Girls/ Broken Bones/ Way Down We Go, Fleetwood Mac’s Gold Dust Woman, Beatles’ Hey Jude, Coldplay’s Violet Hill, Pendulum’s Crush, Madonna/David Guetta’s Revolver, Eddie Vedder’s Society and, if it counts, Cloak and Dagger from TW3’s soundtrack!

Random fact: Since Tree went towards the idea of spooks, I might as well go along with that! I’m claustrophobic- can’t be in smol places, can’t look at smol places, thinking about them isn’t too pleasant, sitting at corners or right against the wall is not ideal. Prolonged exposure may result in at best dizziness and/or shortness of breath, at worst a panic attack. Ugh!

MRIs are surprisingly okay since it’s not my whole body, and the medical science behind it quirks my interest more than it provokes my fight-or-flight mechanism.!

Aesthetic: Hm... Well I too prefer being cozy and comfy rather than go for a specific look, but I wear some sort of shawl or scarf around my neck (it’s windy here!), earrings and red lipstick (whatever shade, but the redder, the better!) most of the time.

New Zealand - Auckland and the Bay of Islands

We can’t quite believe it, but this is our LAST stop! That being said, we still have over five weeks to go and we are in a country that we are both very excited about so its not all bad.

After expecting Virgin Australia to be a decent airline with reclining chairs and media screens, we were thoroughly disappointed when we found out that it is in fact Australasia’s answer to RyanAir. As the saying goes, there is always a silver lining, and after preparing ourselves for 10+ hours of flights we found out that the flight to Brisbane was about four hours, and onto Auckland was only three! This made putting up with the incredibly uncomfortable chairs and distinct lack of entertainment considerably easier to endure, and to be honest the food wasn’t all that terrible either.

We touched down in Auckland feeling relatively fresh and sorted our car within very good time. Our chariot for the next month and a bit is the almighty Hyundai Getz. We won’t brag by posting a picture of it right now, but feel free to paint a picture in your head of a golden baked bean can on trolley wheels with a lawnmower engine. This is the weapon that we will be travelling thousands of kilometres around both the North and South Islands, and will be sharing with another couple for three of the five weeks we are here for. Wish us luck!

Once the car was sorted we made our way to Auckland city centre where we would be staying with Tom and Leonie for two nights. We know Tom and Leonie through Ed and Kate, and can’t thank them enough for their hospitality. Not only did they help us by letting us use their flat as a base to set ourselves up with camping gear, they also very kindly agreed to buy and collect our tent for us on TradeMe before we even arrived. A huge thank you to them, and we hope we can repay the favour in the future! Our first night was a good one for three reasons. We were in the company of familiar faces, we had a decent bed and bathroom, and because Spud drank ale for the first time in four months. We had homemade pizzas for dinner, then headed to a local pub for drinks. It was a great night and it certainly felt like we were back in Western civilisation. We managed to catch up with Ed and Kate that night and hit the sack at gone 1am. Our bodies were still telling us that it was 8pm so we were in for a rough day the next day.

We woke up at around 9am definitely feeling like it was 4am. We were groggy and a little jaded from the booze the night before, but we turfed ourselves out to The Warehouse to buy some camping kit and to have the AC tested on the car. We were quietly hoping that it wasn’t working so that we got another car but the hire company spent the time proving to us that it was working so we left with our tails tucked between our legs. That afternoon we visited the Coopers Creek winery. Tom and Leonie had seen that a jazz band were playing, so we bought some picnic stuff and enjoyed a couple of bottles of their delicious white wine listening to some cracking live music. There’s nothing like sun, live tunes and hair of the dog drinking to sort you out. We felt much better by the end of the gig, and once we got back to the flat we walked into the centre of Auckland for an ice cream and wander around the docklands.

As the jet lag was still affecting us slightly we got a relatively early night so that we were fresh for the next day. After saying our goodbyes we made our way to another The Warehouse and a couple of charity shops to collect the rest of the camping kit we needed. We were a bit anxious about all of the stuff that we had bought, given that we still needed to fit two extra people and their baggage in the car, so for our drive north we decided to dry run putting some of the kit on the roof of the car. It all worked out pretty well and head room wasn’t compromised by the straps, so we put some miles behind us up to the Bay of Islands. The drive was pretty scenic and some of the views of the headlands and islands off the east coast were spectacular. What we didn’t expect was how quickly we would get cut off from civilisation once we left the highway. We knew that we needed to pick up a gas bottle for the cooking stove, but we inadvertently missed our last opportunity to buy one before we got to the camp site. So, we had a salad for dinner and overnight oats for breakfast, and Emily sweet talked our neighbours into boiling some water for tea for us the next morning.

The campsite we stayed in was called Puriri Bay. We recommend it to anyone exploring the North Island. It is a well sheltered, tranquil campsite right on the coast where you can swim over oyster beds if you want to. It has an amazing view over the bay and mountains on the opposite side, with ample and clean facilities for at least a few nights. We stayed for two nights, and on our full day headed to Russell, Paihia, and Waitangi before heading back to the campsite including a full 20 kilometres on gravel tracks through a forest (not the shortcut that Emily had planned)! On the day that we headed back south we started the day off with a short circular walk around the headland near to the campsite to get the blood flowing, before driving to Waipu to check out the glow worm caves. What a spectacle they were! It can only be explained as being able to see a galaxy of stars on the ceiling of a cave. We walked a fair way into the cave itself and gawped at the worms in two caverns, the second being linked to the first by a small tunnel that you have to duck walk through water to get to. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing; the feeling was on par with the bioluminescent plankton in Thailand.

Time was ticking on and we had a few hours of driving ahead of us to our next destination; Browns Bay just north of Auckland. We had organised to stay with friends of Nick and Karen for the next two nights and we were warmly welcomed by Jenny and Graham at around 6pm that night. It was so nice to eat some home cooked food and we were thoroughly made to feel at home even though we had only just met them. We both slept like logs that night.

We woke up to rain the next day. Boooo! So, we used our time wisely and cracked on with organising other parts of the trip, and to contact some estate agents for our move to Bristol. It all felt a bit strange that the time for us to start putting things together for our return to the UK had come around. The clouds broke by the afternoon so we ventured out to Devonport. We walked around the sea front and up the cannon mount that was put in in the early 1900’s. Apparently the cannon was only fired once, at a target on nearby Rangitoto (a dormant volcano) just to check that it worked. The cannon broke a lot of windows of nearby properties, so after a lot of complaints it was never fired again... After a coffee and muffin we made our way back to Browns Bay via yet another The Warehouse to pick up a pool noodle which we cut in half to make roof bars out of. We re-tested putting stuff on the roof and before we knew it Jenny was cooking us in for steaks and wine which we obviously thoroughly enjoyed!

The following day Em had arranged to catch up with a Simon a old uni friend who now manages the NZ cricket team. We met at Eden Park stadium where he works, and before we knew it we were in the All Black’s changing rooms, the coaches box, and walking around the edge of the grounds! Afterwards we grabbed a coffee and as we had free time, Si drove us to Piha beach which is about 50 minutes east of Auckland. The drive was pretty windy and after the booze the night before and coffee, we were both feeling pretty rough by the time we arrived, but the drive was definitely worth it. Piha is a popular surfing beach and there is a programme dedicated to televising surf rescues in the area. The surf wasn’t huge, but we could tell from the behaviour of the water and the surrounding cliffs and rocks in the water that this break was for experienced surfers only! We walked up a giant mound that split the beach in two, took in the view and then had to head back to Auckland. We felt equally as ill by the time we got back, so after saying goodby we had to almost immediately stop for a rest and something to eat before we started our drive south to Rotorua.
