[ đŸ“č Scenes of massive destruction after Israeli Occupation Forces bombed a civilian home belonging to the Abu Awaili family in the al-Habda neighborhood of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip on Tuesday night.]

đŸ’„OCCUPATION BOMBING RAIDS IN CENTRAL GAZA AND INTENSE SHELLING OF KHAN YUNIS ON DAY 116 OF ISRAELI GENOCIDEđŸ’„
Bombing and shelling continued for another day and into the night in the Gaza Strip, while at the same time, Palestinian Minister of Health, Mai Alkaila warned of catastrophic healthcare conditions in the outdoor prison that Gaza is.
Speaking in interview with Palestine TV, Minister Alkaila spoke about severe shortages of health personnel, equipment, medicines and open clinics for Palestinians in Gaza, even as the shells continue to rain down on central and southern Gaza, where Israeli forces penetrated deep into the Khan Yunis governate.
“There are 36 hospitals in the Gaza Strip, 14 of which are partially operating, 9 in the south and 5 in the north," Minister Alkaila told Palestine TV.
She warned that a large outbreak has become probable and emphasized the need for vaccines for children, telling Palestine TV that over 1'100 medical personnel were dead or wounded.
Minister Alkaila also warned that the thousands of dead still trapped under the rubble are an environmental disaster waiting to unfold as it can contribute to the spread of disease.
Lastly, Alkaila slammed the various Western countries, including the United States, the UK, Germany and Australia, among others, that have suspended funding to UNRWA over accusations by the Israeli occupation authorities that less than 0.04% of UNRWA's staff might have participated either directly or indirectly in the events of October 7th.
Israel has previously made repeated made false accusations against international agencies and organizations, including the United Nations, as well as having a history of false flags, set-ups, and false confessions extracted through torture.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported Tuesday that the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) stormed the local headquarters of the humanitarian organization, while also raiding the al-Amal Hospital building's front courtyard area in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza.
Reports tell of Occupation tanks and soldiers demanding the evacuation of both locations under threat of weapons, while the IOF use VHF wave suppression to block communications with the outside world.
Israeli tanks in the courtyard of Al-Amal fired live ammunition and lobbed smoke grenades at the displaced Palestinians outside the hospital, while occupation munitions caused several fires to break out within the confines of PRCS HQ.
Red Crescent crews also transported 16 dead, including women and children, as a result of Israeli airstrikes which targeted another civilian home in the city of Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip.
Medical sources with PRCS also said they'd transported one dead individual and three wounded civilians after occupation warplanes bombed a residential home west of the Nuseirat Camp, in central Gaza. PRCS published video of the scene after its ambulance and civil defense crews arrived at the site of the occupation's bombing raid, with widespread destruction evident in the footage.
Occupation aircraft also targeted the al-Bureij Camp, in the central Gaza Strip, resulting in several casualties, with another airstrike targeting a group of civilians in al-Bureij, wounding several people.
IOF jets also bombed the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in addition to the heavy shelling of the northern sections of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, as well as the eastern sections of Khan Yunis to the south.
The Israeli occupation army also launched several missiles randomly towards civilian homes, especially in the al-Sina'a neighborhood west of Gaza City.
Gaza City's horrors continued with reports of dozens of bodies littering the streets in the west and southwest of the city after occupation air raids, tanks and drone fire concentrated on the area.
Israeli soldiers also opened gunfire in the vicinity of al-Shifa Medical Complex west of Gaza City, resulting in the death of a Palestinian child.
As a result of Israel's war of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the occupation army committed 13 massacres of Palestinian families, killing 114 people, mostly women and children, with an additional 65'636 Palestinians wounded according to Gaza's Ministry of Health.

Drawing on firsthand accounts of the Belgica's voyage and exclusive access to the ship's logbook, Sancton tells the tale of its long, isolated imprisonment on the ice--a story that NASA studies today in its research on isolation for missions to Mars. In vivid, hair-raising prose, Sancton recounts the myriad forces that drove these men right up to and over the brink of madness.
9) Morbidly Yours - Ivy Fairbanks -
Callum Flannelly would rather dive into an open grave than take a stranger to dinner and a movie. But he can only inherit the family undertaking business and carry on their legacy under one condition: He must marry before his 35th birthday. So it’s out of the mortuary and into the dating scene. Lark Thompson would rather get crushed by a falling anvil than stay next to a funeral home during her stay in Galway, Ireland. The vivacious American cartoon creator and animator came here to embrace life, not be reminded of losing her husband. When Lark learns of Callum’s dilemma and aversion to marrying out of necessity rather than love, she agrees to help the introverted mortician. Although sworn off love herself, she is optimistic that Callum can find The One and secure his inheritance. But as the dating project progresses and their friendship grows, so does a mutual attraction. The more time she spends with serious, sarcastic Callum, the more she dreads finding him a match. And the more disastrous dates he endures, the more he dreads Lark’s imminent return to the states. If they think it’s possible to ignore their connection, they’re dead wrong.
10) Bunny - Mona Awad -
Samantha Heather Mackey couldn't be more of an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England's Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort--a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other Bunny, and seem to move and speak as one. But everything changes when Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies' fabled Smut Salon, and finds herself inexplicably drawn to their front door--ditching her only friend, Ava, in the process. As Samantha plunges deeper and deeper into the Bunnies' sinister yet saccharine world, beginning to take part in the ritualistic off-campus Workshop where they conjure their monstrous creations, the edges of reality begin to blur. Soon, her friendships with Ava and the Bunnies will be brought into deadly collision.

Tammy visits a self-taught gardener in her extraordinary garden packed with produce inspired by Lebanese culture and cuisine.
During the strict western Sydney lockdowns, Sahar El-Chiekh transformed what was a dusty backyard into an extraordinarily productive cultural food bowl. By gathering advice from the online garden community and her creative approach to gardening in a rental property, Sahar's backyard has become a sensation. "I came out here to hide in the garden," says Sahar, but it prompted a pursuit to create a place of solace and empowerment. "If mummy can't be found (in the house), she's out in the back."
Sahar is passionate about cooking food from the garden and admits, "I'm not actually a great cook, but it's different when the produce is from your garden. I don't like to see anything go to waste." Much of her produce connects back to her Lebanese roots, with plants such as Egyptian spinach, eggplant, beans and chickpeas. Sahar says, these are "the flavour of my childhood." Egyptian spinach, traditionally known as Molokhia, has a gelatinous texture and is best suited in soups. Sahar says, "I find it easier to grow than English spinach" however seeds for this traditional variety were not easy to find when her parents moved here as teenagers. "Now you're seeing a lot more of them in middle eastern grocers, but in the past my parents had to go to a farm that grew them, just to be able to enjoy them in their home."
With an organic approach to her gardening, Sahar's advice is to harness companion planting. To control pests, Sahar grows marigolds to deter thrips, hibiscus to attract flea beetles away from her eggplants, and chickpeas to deter caterpillars from her tomatoes. To avoid powdery mildew, Sahar trains her zucchini vertically and removes all leaves growing below the developing fruit to improve airflow. "This is the first year I've done it and it's made a huge difference," says Sahar, who has also adopted an ingenious t-shirt support for heavier fruits that will be harvested for seeds. "I need to support the ladies" says Sahar.
Growing a garden in a rental property has its challenges, so to create a transportable garden, Sahar's uses large growbags for her various fruit trees. Her prized possession is a pomelo tree, which Sahar says is "in between a grapefruit and an orange." Her obsession with pomelo started twenty-two years ago. "I went overseas to Lebanon for a holiday
my auntie has a big citrus orchard in her backyard, and I used to sit under the trees and freshly pick and eat them. Then I came back to Australia I couldn't find them; it took me 20 years to hunt down this pomelo. Last year was the first year I tasted it
It's not bitter like a grapefruit, but not wet like an orange, it's perfect."
There are some standout structures in the garden, such as a rustic ladder and a walkthrough archway. "I always loved the idea of being able to walk through an archway," says Sahar, "I wanted to grow vertically this year so I could fit more in." Growing on the arches are tromboncino, Lebanese cucumbers, various tomatoes, snake beans, Richmond green cucumbers, and Cucu-melon. And they're not only lovely on the vine.
Sahar invites Tammy to taste some of her homegrown heritage saying, "we have gardened and now we're going to graze," with traditional dishes such as hummus, Fattoush salad, cooked beans and mloukheya a banadoura, a dish made with Egyptian spinach and tomato. "I think gardening and being able to cook from my garden, gives me a sense of empowerment," says Sahar, "Especially to be able to feed my kids and my family from something that I've grown, it brings us together. As we know, food is all about community, family, laughing and building memories. I think gardening and cooking go hand in hand."

Great Kantƍ earthquake (1923) and the Massacres
The Great Kantƍ earthquake struck the Kantƍ Plain on the main Japanese island of HonshĆ« at 11:58:44 JST (02:58:44 UTC) on Saturday, September 1, 1923. Varied accounts indicate the duration of the earthquake was between four and ten minutes. Extensive firestorms and even a fire whirl added to the death toll. The Kantƍ Massacre began on the day of the earthquake.  The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 on the moment magnitude scale with its focus deep beneath Izu ƌshima Island in Sagami Bay. Estimated casualties totalled about 142,800 deaths, including about 40,000 who went missing and were presumed dead.
Because the earthquake struck when people were cooking meals, many were killed as a result of large fires that broke out. Fires started immediately after the earthquake. Some fires developed into firestorms that swept across cities. Many people died when their feet became stuck on melting tarmac. The single greatest loss of life was caused by a fire whirl that engulfed the Rikugun Honjo Hifukusho in downtown Tokyo, where about 38,000 people were incinerated after taking shelter there after the earthquake. The earthquake broke water mains all over the city, and putting out the fires took nearly two full days until late in the morning of September 3.
A strong typhoon centered off the coast of the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture brought high winds to Tokyo Bay at about the same time as the earthquake. These winds caused fires to spread rapidly.
Many homes were buried or swept away by landslides in the mountainous and hilly coastal areas in western Kanagawa Prefecture; about 800 people died. A collapsing mountainside in the village of Nebukawa, west of Odawara, pushed the entire village and a passenger train carrying over 100 passengers, along with the railway station, into the sea.
The RMS Empress of Australia was about to leave Yokohama harbor when the earthquake struck. It narrowly survived and assisted in rescuing 2000 survivors. A P&O liner, Dongola, was also in the harbor at the moment of disaster and rescued 505 people, taking them to Kobe.
A tsunami with waves up to 10 m (33 ft) high struck the coast of Sagami Bay, Bƍsƍ Peninsula, Izu Islands, and the east coast of Izu Peninsula within minutes. The tsunami caused many deaths, including about 100 people along Yui-ga-hama Beach in Kamakura and an estimated 50 people on the Enoshima causeway. Over 570,000 homes were destroyed, leaving an estimated 1.9 million homeless. Evacuees were transported by ship from Kantƍ to as far as Kobe in Kansai. The damage is estimated to have exceeded US$1 billion (or about $16 billion today). There were 57 aftershocks.
Ethnic Koreans were massacred after the earthquake. The Home Ministry declared martial law and ordered all sectional police chiefs to make maintenance of order and security a top priority. A false rumor was spread that Koreans were taking advantage of the disaster, committing arson and robbery, and were in possession of bombs. Anti-Korean sentiment was heightened by fear of the Korean independence movement.
In the confusion after the quake, mass murder of Koreans by mobs occurred in urban Tokyo and Yokohama, fuelled by rumors of rebellion and sabotage. The government reported that 231 Koreans were killed by mobs in Tokyo and Yokohama in the first week of September. Independent reports said the number of dead was far higher, ranging from 6,000 to 10,000. Some newspapers reported the rumors as fact, including the allegation that Koreans were poisoning wells. The numerous fires and cloudy well water, a little-known effect of a large quake, all seemed to confirm the rumors of the panic-stricken survivors who were living amidst the rubble. Vigilante groups set up roadblocks in cities, and tested civilians with a shibboleth for supposedly Korean-accented Japanese: deporting, beating, or killing those who failed. Army and police personnel colluded in the vigilante killings in some areas. Of the 3,000 Koreans taken into custody at the Army Cavalry Regiment base in Narashino, Chiba Prefecture, 10% were killed at the base, or after being released into nearby villages. Moreover, anyone mistakenly identified as Korean, such as Chinese, Ryukyuans, and Japanese speakers of some regional dialects, suffered the same fate. About 700 Chinese, mostly from Wenzhou, were killed. A monument commemorating this was built in 1993 in Wenzhou.
In response, the government called upon the Japanese Army and the police to protect Koreans; 23,715 Koreans were placed in protective custody across Japan, 12,000 in Tokyo alone. The chief of police of Tsurumi (or Kawasaki by some accounts) is reported to have publicly drunk the well water to disprove the rumor that Koreans had been poisoning wells. In some towns, even police stations into which Korean people had escaped were attacked by mobs, whereas in other neighborhoods, civilians took steps to protect them. The Army distributed flyers denying the rumor and warning residents against attacking Koreans, but in many cases, vigilante activity only ceased as a result of Army operations against it. In several documented cases, soldiers and policemen participated in the killings, and in other cases, authorities handed groups of Koreans over to local vigilantes, who proceeded to kill them.

Considering the Best Funeral Plans in Perth: A Guide to Choosing the Right Option
When it comes to planning for the future, one of the most important and sensitive decisions people can make is choosing a funeral plan. While it’s not something most of us like to think about, having a pre-arranged funeral plan in place provides peace of mind for both the individual and their family. It ensures that loved ones won’t be burdened with difficult decisions during an already challenging time. If you’re in Perth and considering the best funeral plans available, there are a few key factors to take into account to make the right choice.
Understanding Funeral Plans
A funeral plan is a pre-paid service agreement that allows individuals to plan and pay for their funeral in advance. By making these decisions now, you can ensure that your wishes are followed, and the financial burden on your family is minimized. Funeral plans can range from a basic, no-frills package to a more comprehensive offering that includes additional services, such as floral arrangements or transportation.
There are generally two types of funeral plans to consider:
Pre-Paid Funeral Plans: These plans involve paying for your funeral in advance, either in full or in installments. They typically cover the funeral director’s services, such as arranging the ceremony, burial or cremation, and other necessary items like a coffin or urn.
Pre-Arranged Funeral Plans: These plans involve arranging the details of your funeral, such as your preferences for the ceremony, but without pre-paying for the services. Payment is typically made at the time of death.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Funeral Plan in Perth
Reputation of the Funeral Provider It’s crucial to select a reputable funeral provider to ensure that your plan will be handled with care, respect, and professionalism. Take the time to research funeral homes or services in Perth. Look for customer reviews, testimonials, and any industry affiliations, such as membership with the Funeral Directors Association of Western Australia (FDAWA). A well-established funeral provider is more likely to provide you with a quality service and stand by their commitment to your plan.
Range of Services Offered Funeral plans can vary widely in terms of the services they offer. Some providers offer a basic plan that only covers the most essential funeral arrangements, while others offer more comprehensive options that may include things like: Cremation or Burial Options: Some people prefer cremation over burial, while others may want specific arrangements made with local cemeteries. Transportation Services: Funeral plans often include transportation to and from the funeral service, but it’s important to clarify the specifics of these services. Floral Arrangements: Many funeral plans include flowers, but the type and quantity can vary. Celebrant or Religious Services: If you have a specific religious or spiritual tradition, ensure that your plan accommodates those preferences. Memorial Services: Some funeral plans can include additional memorial services, such as the creation of online memorials or tribute videos.
Cost and Payment Options Funeral plans can vary greatly in price depending on the services included. It’s important to compare funeral plans in Perth to ensure you get the best value for money. Keep in mind that you’re paying for peace of mind, so it’s essential that the plan fits your needs without overspending. Most providers offer flexible payment options, including lump-sum payments or installment plans. Some plans also offer fixed-price options, meaning the cost of the funeral services won’t change, even if funeral prices rise in the future. Be sure to clarify whether there are any additional fees, such as administrative or service charges.
Personal Preferences and Customization One of the main benefits of planning your funeral in advance is the ability to tailor it to your specific wishes. Think about your personal preferences when it comes to the ceremony, burial or cremation method, music, and other details. A funeral plan should be flexible enough to accommodate these needs. Custom Coffins and Urns: Some people prefer a unique coffin or urn that reflects their personality or beliefs. Check with your provider to see what options are available. Green or Eco-Friendly Funerals: If sustainability is important to you, look for funeral plans that offer eco-friendly options, such as biodegradable caskets or natural burial grounds.
Transferability It’s essential to check whether your funeral plan is transferable, particularly if you plan to move or change your preferences over time. Some providers in Perth allow the transfer of funeral plans between different funeral homes, while others may have restrictions. This is a key consideration to ensure flexibility in case your circumstances change.
Customer Service and Support A critical factor in choosing a funeral plan provider is the level of customer service they offer. Dealing with the loss of a loved one is never easy, so it’s important to choose a provider that offers compassionate and reliable support. The provider should be responsive to your needs and be available to answer any questions or concerns you may have during the planning process.
Legal Considerations It’s advisable to understand the legal aspects of funeral planning in Western Australia. Ensure that your plan is legally binding and that it complies with the state’s laws and regulations. Some funeral homes in Perth may offer free legal advice or help you navigate the paperwork involved in setting up a funeral plan.
Conclusion
Choosing the best funeral plan in Perth is a highly personal decision, and one that involves a mix of financial considerations, personal preferences, and a desire for peace of mind. By carefully evaluating providers based on reputation, cost, services, and flexibility, you can ensure that your funeral plan meets your needs and alleviates the burden on your family when the time comes. Whether you opt for a pre-paid plan or a pre-arranged service, the key is to make the decision now, so your loved ones can focus on remembering you in a way that is meaningful, without the stress of making arrangements during a difficult time.

Thieves charged after Nova the husky reunited with her dads
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/thieves-charged-after-nova-the-husky-reunited-with-her-dads/
Thieves charged after Nova the husky reunited with her dads
Tumblr media
Two people have been charged after a dog’s escape from a backyard in western New South Wales sparked a week-long rescue effort spanning 1,700 kilometres across two states.
Coonabarabran couple Martin Geyer and Daniel Loader’s Siberian husky Nova escaped from their home in western New South Wales on January 3. Nova managed to jump over a fence with the help of a tyre.
About an hour later, a local saw the four-year-old pooch at the local service station, with witnesses messaging the pair to report they’d seen Nova being put into someone else’s car.
“When we found out somebody had picked her up, straight away the messages started coming in and it became clear they were travellers, not locals,” Daniel told the ABC.
“The next town is two hours away so our thinking was, ‘You’re taking that dog two hours away, you’re taking her a lot further, but we just don’t know where.'”
Working with police, the couple found out the vehicle Nova was put into was registered to an address in Townsville.
“We thought, ‘Oh my god, she’s all the way up there’. We were just hoping they didn’t dump her on the way, or worse,” Daniel said.
The distraught couple took to social media, posting on north Queensland Facebook groups, to plead for more information to help find Nova.
Nova the husky reunited with her family
Seven days later and 1700 kilometres away, a member of the public, who’d found Nova wandering the street, handed her into a Wulguru vet.
The vet identified Nova the husky based on her interstate microchip. Martin and Daniel needed to get Nova home, but had trouble getting their pooch transported such a long distance.
The couple decided to personally travel 22 hours from their Coonabarabran home north to Townsville to reunite with her.
“For our four-legged family, we would do that time and time again, because they are our family,” Daniel said.
“The outpouring of love has just been really wholesome and we’re so blessed for everyone that supported us.”
Police charge alleged dognappers
On Thursday, Queensland police charged two people with the alleged theft of the Siberian husky.
Police allege the 28-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man stole the husky from Coonabarabran on January 3.
A Queensland Police officer caught the pair of alleged dognappers after recognising the husky in her body camera footage.
That officer had attended a Kirwan address for an unrelated matter days earlier.
She was watching the footage back. Because she’d seen Martin and Daniel’s viral social media posts about Nova’s dognapping, she believed a dog in the backyard of her footage was Nova the husky.
The officer later confirmed it was and arrested the pair.
The West End woman and the Cranbrook man have been charged with bringing stolen goods into Queensland. The pair are due to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on February 19.
Martin and Daniel said they might not have got their dog back without the generosity of strangers and “the power of social media.”

Is Studying Computer Science in Malaysia Worth It?
Tumblr media
In recent years, Malaysia has become a popular destination for international students pursuing higher education. One of the most sought-after fields of study is computer science, given the increasing demand for tech-savvy professionals worldwide. But is studying computer science in Malaysia truly worth it? This article explores the factors that make Malaysia a compelling choice for computer science education, while also considering potential drawbacks to help you make an informed decision.
Study in Malaysia
1. High-Quality Education
Malaysia is home to several globally recognized universities that offer computer science programs. Institutions like Universiti Malaya (UM), University Technology Malaysia (UTM), and Taylor's University rank highly in both local and international rankings. Many of these universities have collaborations with renowned institutions worldwide, ensuring that their curricula meet international standards.

Breakdown:
Tuition fees for computer science programs typically range from $5,000 to $15,000 per year.
Monthly living expenses, including accommodation, food, and transportation, range between $300 and $500.
3. Multicultural Environment
Malaysia's diverse culture provides a welcoming atmosphere for international students. With people from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, students can experience a unique blend of traditions, languages, and cuisines. This multicultural environment not only enriches your personal experience but also enhances your global perspective—an essential trait in the tech industry.

Reflections on India
Tumblr media
After taking 11 flights, 2 long-distance buses and much local transport across Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand over a month, I have arrived back in New York City. I have been hibernating for the last week or so, trying to get over jet lag, return to my normal sleep schedule (this has been a woeful disaster), and taking care of family business. Here are some reflections on India ( will get to the other nations in later posts):
India
It is remarkably modern now. For the first time in six visits to India over my life, I did not get sick at all, despite having marked jet lag for the first few days. Granted, I was limited to Surat, self-proclaimed “the cleanest city in India.” Nearly every home had modern seat toilets and bidet shower, the exception being one roadside gas station in Maharashtra on my long road trip in the middle of the night from the Mumbai airport. This was not true at all on my last visit in 2012, although it was rapidly modernizing even then. Also, next to my uncle’s home in a relatively posh neighborhood of Surat (well, it was a barren dirt field when his father bought it in the early 1970s), you would see people driving bullock carts in 2012. Not anymore, now there’s a modern “Northern Boulevard” type street right next door with multiple lanes.
The wedding was spectacular. My extended family (which, in India, includes people who aren’t directly related to you and even neighbors) were amazingly welcoming and accommodating. Everyone helped out. The locations were ornate, the technology used was exquisite. Some people outside of India who viewed my online documentary on the wedding told me they assumed that the couple getting married was from outside India (because how could they afford just a luxurious wedding) but both families are from Surat. I’m not even sure they’ve ever left India.
And this is the general sentiment I got from people in India that they want foreigners to take with them. One told me it will be the same here as in the West “in five years” (not so sure—maybe 10-15?). One of my uncles told me Indians don’t want their nation to be considered like the world depicted in “Slumdog Millionaire.” I mean “Slumdog Millionaire” (a British film) was from 2008, which was 16 years ago, and it’s a rag to riches story that could easily happen in any nation, including, maybe especially, in the United States, but no matter. They associate it with Western propaganda (because of course films are made just to insult nations) that their nation is poor and filthy.
The main reason India has prospered, especially economically and technologically, seems to be help from Russia. And pretty much everyone I met had a pro-Russia, pro-Putin, pro-Modi and pro-Trump mentally. All the right wing talking points were there: George Soros funded the riots that led the CIA to ouster the Bangladeshi PM because the USA wants some island (not Greenland :) —don’t remember the last time the USA conquered a territory to keep it, and the only person in this century who’s ever hinted at this is, recently, Trump); the US “provoked” Russia into invading Ukraine after installing Zelensky after the Revolution of Dignity in 2019 (problem—the Revolution of Dignity occurred in 2014 (before which there was a decades-long and popular effort to have closer ties to the West) and, there was a previously pro-Western President before Zelensky who was elected in 2014 (after the popular overthrow of the pro-Russian President) and Zelensky was popularly elected in a landslide in 2019, but I guess that doesn’t jive with the info on Russian State TV); Bush attacked Iraq in 2003 to install a pro-US govt (true, at the time—not as much anymore) and steal their oil (evidence?); Trump will bring “peace on Earth” by reeling in the violent, stubborn and insubordinate Zelensky, by stopping the CIA/Military etc. from unnecessary meddling in world affairs and by punishing China and Muslims everywhere; the USA and UK only have good economies because they control the gold/monetary supply—etc. etc. Needless to say, being “Good for India” meaning economically and for Hindus/Modi/BJP is the barometer and only barometer for what should go on in India.
Only after I got back did my mother tell me that a couple of family members had expressed different (pro-Congress) points of view to her in the past. But I didn’t hear them while in India. As far as I can tell, at least among high caste Gujaratis, India under Modi is ideologically totalitarian. I suppose that’s not surprising considering that India is a developing rather than developed nation and that, despite having the world’s largest democracy by population, India had no history of democracy before 1947 (unless you count ancient Dwarka under Krishna’s guidance in the Hindu epics and who knows if that even existed). And I experienced plenty of high caste Indians ordering around restaurant workers, servants, even their wives, in a way no one could ever get away with in America.
One of my uncles told me that the diversity of political thought in America had gone way downhill. Really? I mean, just for one example, 16 Democrats ran for the Presidential nomination in 2020, each with various ideas for issues and governance. And the only reason we didn’t get the same in 2024 was an incumbent President who bowed out too late and picked his VP to run in his place like 100 days before the election because the party didn’t want to go into the election divided. On the Republican side we had serious challenges to Trump by Nikki Haley, and there were some fresh ideas offered, whether people liked them or not. It’s true, there are ridiculous hurdles to running as an Indie candidate but we still had Green, Libertarian, Cornell West, even an Indian American right-wing dude who wasn’t natural-born (I think he was ultimately disqualified--didn't appear on my ballot). I mean everyone has an opinion about everything and even despite the crazy bipartisan divide, there’s still plenty of complex thought among specific issues by Americans of all types. Not to mention hundreds of types of cereals, a million channels, thousands of ethnicities (even languages, in NYC, anyway). One of my cousins also told me that she heard NYC was “dirty.” I admitted it had gone downhill after the pandemic due to idiotic policies and governance, but it’s still NYC. And she lives in Surat (sorry, not as clean or modern as NYC yet—though I didn’t say that).
Speaking of which, there are signs of Modi's lax environmental standards to boost technological innovation. Just take a drive through Vapi, Gujarat. You'll barely be able to see, let alone breathe.
I also watched a film (almost 4 hrs in length with previews and intermission) in a theater in Surat. It was Pushpa 2: The Rule.” The theater had modern recliner seats and waiter service, just like at Alamo Drafthouse or most non-indie theaters in NYC nowadays. Although my relative who (now) lives in Kentucky acted like this was an advance from the US. Maybe these kinds of theaters don’t exist in Kentucky, I don’t know, or maybe he was just trying to show as usual how modern India has become.
The film is a sequel, so I read up on the original prior to watching the film. It was in Hindi without subtitles so I couldn’t understand what was being said, but I got the basic gist. Basically Pushpa is a South Indian gangster who “made it” in the first film, and now needs to maintain/increase his power by controlling politicians. Throughout the first half of the film, he and his selected politician are trying to get on the ballot/influence power, and meanwhile he needs to get a shipment of illegal red tree logs through multiple jurisdictions while being chased by a rogue cop who was humiliated by Pushpa in the last film. I think you can guess who wins that battle.
There was an intermission, after which the film took a completely different turn. Now Pushpa needed to defend Hindu/Indian Womanhood (“whether they like it or not,” as Trump said). While attending a festival, he encounters a cross-dressing, makeup wearing villain (of course the villain must be portrayed as a transgender weirdo in Modi’s anti-woke India) who tries to accost/rape a Hindu virgin. Pushpa intervenes but is summarily dressed down by the victim’s infuriated father. My assumption was that he blamed his daughter for the flirtation in the typical macho manner, but my relative explained to me that his ego was too big and he wanted to be the one to protect her, not Pushpa. Because he’s responsible for her virginity until she’s married. I think.
In any case, Pushpa backs off. We learn the perpetrator is the nephew of the powerful politician Pushpa unsuccessfully courted in the first half of the film and that he has been let off the hook/released from jail on multiple crimes due to this influence. Which gives the cross-dressing villain the chutzpah to kidnap the girl (who’s POV we never get). Now Pushpa goes into Superman mode and tries to save the girl, and after much travail, succeeds and kills the villain. Afterwards, he receives a visit from the tearful father, who apologizes for his ego/arrogance and gives Pushpa’s dutiful/beautiful wife a wedding invitation to the saved daughter’s wedding (assumably an arranged match in the typical Indian manner, although it’s not so typical in India anymore). We learn that the invitation doesn’t include a child that Pushpa’s wife bears.
However, there are unhealthy tidings. The politician is furious at his nephew’s death and swears revenge with the help of the rogue cop. So this is will set the stage for Pushpa 3: The Rampage. Yay!
My relative said the film was “okay” but he praised its positive depiction of Hinduism. He said this was only because the film was South Indian. He claims that Bollywood films depict Hinduism as being evil and Islam as the ideal. An example he gave was that Hindu priests are depicted as rapists, whereas no film would ever depict a Muslim Imam that way. Certainly if true this is an unbalanced depiction.
In any case, I was informed that this film has generally gotten good reviews in India, though I’m not sure why. It’s two completely different storylines, neither of which have a hint of originality. I love crime films, but Pushpa 2 was only semi-interesting for its strange bend.
A word about the traffic in Surat: it’s an amazing experience to be on the road here. There are few traffic lights to speak of, and everyone is basically turning into oncoming traffic that’s head on. You not only have to be a great driver yourself, but you have to trust that everyone else is a great driver too. It’s amazing there aren’t more accidents. Granted, there’s still prohibition in Gujarat, so I imagine drunk driving isn’t so common. Most people who drink are lower caste Hindus in the villages heady on moonshine, like in a Faulkner novel.
I have plenty of other observations but don’t want to make this tremendously long—maybe save it for the book. Even the visa process was painless and featured good eye candy—nothing like the bribery-filled, bureaucratic old days. Bottom line, India has advanced significantly, despite its flaws—so visit if you can!
