youtube
shout out to matt rogers for this delightful new entry to the xmas song canon
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 Bookshops & Bonedust (Legends & Lattes #0) (Travis Baldree, author & narrator) - prequel novel of Viv's much younger days - just as fun and cozy as Legends & Lattes
🥰 Hashtag Soulmates (everwitch) - 44K, RWRB AU - deliberately tropetastic sort-of meta fic where Henry's a fanfic writer & Alex is one of his biggest fans and they work together but don't know it. Hard to explain but fun to read. Good stuff on the nature of fanfic; also hilarious bits where it walks right up to the crackfic line but doesn't go over. I really enjoyed reading something the author so clearly had a blast writing.
😊 In the Form of a Question: The Joys and Rewards of a Curious Life (Amy Schneider, author & narrator) - entertaining read
😍 Tommy Cabot Was Here (The Cabots #1) (Cat Sebastian) - reread, novella; just really in a mood to reread in this universe! Hadn't read this since I read Daniel's book, so it was fun to see him guest star as a 12 yr old
😍 Peter Cabot Gets Lost (The Cabots #2) (Cat Sebastian) - reread; I love all the Cabots but this one is my #1 fave by a smidge. The grumpy/sunshine is *chef's kiss*!
😍 Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots (The Cabots #3) (Cat Sebastian) - reread; Alex & Daniel are actually dating but too oblivious (and busy pining in silence) to realize it. I love these dumbasses.
😍 Luke and Billy Finally Get a Clue (The Cabots #3.5) (Cat Sebastian) - reread, set in the Cabots 'verse but with no Cabots in sight. Just two baseball boys pulling their heads out of their asses and figuring out what they mean to one another.
💖💖 +102K of shorter fic 💖💖

And the Bells Were Ringing Out on Megmas Day - Holiday 2023
A while ago one of my best friends sent me a text:
Tumblr media
I noodled on this for a while, made lists and everything. A few months later I replied with:
Tumblr media
(Yes, these are the kinds of conversations you can have with me if you have my contact info).
Anyway, if you're familiar to the Megmas back catalogue, you know that Fairytale of New York has been a long time staple of these mixes, both the original and a ton of great covers. With the passing of Shane MacGowan this year, I couldn't help but pay tribute to one of the best punk songs and one of the best holiday songs of all time––uncomfortable language and all. And so, the title of this year's mix is from the chorus of Fairytale of New York. And the album art is a slight nod to the album cover for the single.
I thought about putting a cover or live version of Fairytale of New York on this mix, but in the end, I decided to just go with the original. And, in a wonderful stroke of luck, one of the other songs on this mix references the song with the line "This is the fairytale of nowhere."
This year's mix is a return to form in a lot of ways: it has more pop-punk than in recent years, more silly songs, and even a Hanukkah song! There were also so many wonderful new Christmas songs that were on my radar this year, I hardly had to dip into my unused archive.
As always I hope you enjoy the mix and share it with people who also like non-traditional holiday songs.

Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas Volume III Set for December 1st Release
Having tweeted out plans to release deluxe versions of Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas volumes I & II for 2023, I have had a bit of a re-think and decided to abandon that idea and instead press ahead with a third volume.
It just seemed easier to market a separate volume and that makes it easier to raise money for Crisis, which is the point after all. This will be a smaller scale affair, though, with maybe 20-25 tracks rather than 54 this time around. That is going to be reflected in the reduced price of £5.00. The reason for the reduced number of tracks is that it took me a whole year to hone down the hundreds of Xmas songs that I tracked down into the 108 tracks that comprised volumes I & II. This somewhat last-minute decision won't result in a compromise in the quality of the material for a number of reasons though - I received some excellent songs after the deadline for submissions last year which I can now revisit, plus the contacts that I made through 2022 have enabled me to gather in some great new songs in double-quick time. Having had sensational reviews for the first two volumes (see archives), I won't be diluting the standard I have set myself now. It will be the same eclectic blend of Indie, perhaps slanted slightly more in the direction of garage rock/post-punk, with the quality control set to stratospheric. I will start revealing the line-up, one act a day, in November.
Tumblr media
The album is set for release on the first bandcamp Friday in December (the 1st) with all monies again going to Crisis at Christmas. I'll be blogging/tweeting about the contributing artists through November.
A reminder that you can still purchase volumes I & II here

Somehow I got stuck listening to "Re" by Café Tacvba.
Tumblr media
This was the first cd I ever heard from them and I fell in love with them. It's a very experimental album. Every song is like a different genre.
My mom had this cd in her collection. She's not really one to listen to rock music. My parents feel for some scam where you pay money and they send you random spanish music cds back in the late 1990s and early 2000s. So they got a lot of cds they would not have bought on their own. My parents like more banda, cumbia, norteña, merengue, and salsa. Not really rock en español. But they got this cd from café tacvba and 2 or 3 Maná cds.
In I think 5th or 6th grade I got a boombox for Xmas. I really wanted it to play cds. I soon got bored because I had "Celebrity" by N*sync and those promo cds from McDonald's and Burger King. The Backstreet boys one, the N*sync with britney spears, and the Yu-Gi-Oh music to duel by.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I just looked at all their cds and looked at the cool art. "Re" and the Maná albums got my attention and well my parents never played them. So I gave them a try and liked them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My mom made fun of me because I was gonna be a rocker. I was already listening to pop punk on radio disney. OMFGGZZZ DOES THAT RADIO STATION STILL EXIST??
Anyway "Re" and "Sueños Liquidos" were the ones I played the most. I never returned these 3 cds to my parents. I still have them on my cd collection.
Anyway when I graduated from UC Berkeley, the Chicano/chicana graduation committee asked us to submit songs. I send them "24 horas" from "Re" by Café TACVBA. It was surreal hearing that song be blasted at the Greek Theater.
So now that rock archivo de la @rockarchivola on Instagram announced that their latest episode of their podcast "The discursive power of rock en español and the desire for democracy " was going to have an episode on it..
I just needed to listen to "Re". But so far I just played a few random songs from it. Now I'm trying to listen to the whole album a few times before I listen to the podcast.
Also I'm behind on the podcast :(
I'm on episode 5. But I'll eventually get there.

an objectively bad band that i love
so i was doing the thing where i discuss music with idiot children on discord when they brought up orbitron, and someone mistook them for the font this made us wonder if anyone ever named a band “wingdings”, and yes, someone absolutely did do that, and they made it the biggest shitpost ever i cannot quite explain how terrible this music purposefully is. the audio is always clipping horribly. it is recorded on one 20 pound microphone several metres away from any of the instruments and is functionally a series of noises in order. half of the songs are covers of songs you know very well but played quite awfully, and the band members actively laugh at themselves while playing if you have time to spare. give the “I Burnt My Mouth on a Chicken Kiev for Wingdings” album a listen, featuring such deep and thought-provoking titles as “we are number one but everytime we do anything it sounds awful“ and “WITE XMAS“ i can’t quite understate how fucking funny it is to start listening to a song with no warning, hear the recording physically start during a conversation and a quite-good pop punk riff (played 3 metres away from the microphone, of course) before your ears are blasted by a suddenly Very Loud guitar. and then a cover of smash mouth starts. i just. it’s wonderful.
they’re not even a band that threatens to become good. they just suck on purpose and it’s hilarious and i love them and they haven’t posted anything since december 2016. please come back my beloveds i miss you

for XMAS I was gifted the new MUFFS DEMOS on vinyl ...
WOW so much fun to hear the unfiltered Kim Shattuck inventing her music, each song dripping in pop-punk hooks and joy galore
Kim was also a stellar photographer and you can still visit her Flickr site to see what she saw; selfies, Dodger stadium, L.A. architectural & neon bric-a-brac, pets and etc. (and, yes, that is her in an Amy Winehouse Halloween costume)

OK Boomer Xmas
The Counterculture dug in its dirty, bare heels in 1967 and disrupted music into the 1990s. Christmas got less sweet and sentimental, less inclined to postwar tunnel-vision complacency, and Kaliyuga tightened its grip. From Billboard December 1973:
Tumblr media
Before finding Jesus, garage-rock daddy Sean Bonniwell did a stint as a New Age guru. Part of that legacy is this psych-gospel, multi-tempo Christmas song from 1970 recommended especially for the hardcore Alt.Xmas fan.
youtube
The Bahamian guitarist/singer Joseph Spence even put a curmudgeonly spin on our old favorite in 1980.
youtube
Meanwhile, R&B was breaking through on mainstream charts. Stevie Wonder, the Jacksons, Sly Stone, Temptations, and many others got radio play and made Top 40 more dynamic in the 1970-80s than it had ever been (or has been since #OKBoomer).
Tumblr media
The clubs and bars I went to in the 70s played funk and disco, but Christmas was usually just more pretty lights. Kalyan made this underserved "disco reggae" jam in 1974.
youtube
The B-side to Greg Lake's 1975 art-rock carol "I Believe in Father Christmas" is nearly instrumental, and holds up well. Play it at your next Christmas party, and watch the tipsy eyebrows scrunch together.
youtube
Dutch singer-songwriter-thereminist Fay Lovsky made a couple of fun records just before the turn of the century, but long before that, she had a hometown Christmas hit with this 1981 ode to Xmas in the 60s. Luckily, MTV was just taking off, so there's cringe-worthy film.
youtube
The Brits had plenty of hits in this period, but Wham!'s was one of the few we Yanks heard much about (it got covered ad nauseam).
Captain Sensible briefly left goth-punk heroes The Damned in 1984 and recorded this synth-infused holiday banger.
youtube
Throughout the 80s, 4AD was keeping coolness on a slow burn for the rest of us with their essential roster of misfits and visionaries. On the approach to the Alt.90s, there were signs of what was to come.
youtube
Sorry, fellow Boomers, our heyday was the 70s and the 80s, and we kinda blew it for the holidays. Here's the evidence:

RomaTrial presents: BERLIN POST PUNK! a Feminist Band*s Happening! The green t-shirt with the slogan “Girls invented punk, not England” worn by Kim Gordon is for sure one of the most memorable outfits of music history. And that slogan is true: the revolutionary and disruptive force of punk should rightfully called feminist too. No music scene has so many FLINTA people involved in, and the whole new wave scene that scattered from it has an impressive numbers of FLINTA artists and bands that took their music in any disparate direction, sometimes incredibly far away from any rock clichee.
PIEUVRE, VORSICHT KINDER & JEJEJE (bands associated with the label K i t c h e n L e g R e c o r d s) are going to show perfectly an uncompromising originality in their music being the playfullness infused of the alcolpop-neue deutsche welle of Vorsicht Kinder, the math max rhythms with minimalist approach and beautiful melodies of Jejeje or the abrasive, yet very pop no-wave punk funk of Peiuvre”
Pieuvre is a sensation from the bubbly Berlin underground, started magically by coincidences, missing connections and a bit of luck. Once Pia, Lina and Fege met, they fused their influences patching together raw-no wavey guitars, a punk-funk like rhythm session and well crafted vocal melodies in three languages. Playful, dance-able, very feminist and mostly quite impertinent. They released their debut “Hyperstretch” with Kitchenleg Records in 2023 and a music video for their single “Wardrobe” in May 2024. ByteFM praised Pieuvre’s debut as “grungy lo-fi post-punk, for fans of fuzzed-out guitar sounds”.
Vorsicht Kinder
Well, do you still remember the delicious alcopops – those sweet, sticky alcoholic mixed drinks from your youth that gave you many an excessive high? That’s what the music of VORSICHT KINDER sounds like and from it they claim their own music genre: alcopop – nice and cheap and banging. VORSICHT KINDER are four friends from Berlin who have been playing concerts regularly since 2019 and released their first album ‘Verschluck dich nicht’ on the Berlin label Kitchen Leg Records in 2023. Their style is described as a mixture of post-punk, no-wave and Neue Deutsche Welle that playfully breaks down genre boundaries and song structures. They regularly swap instruments on stage and in Dadaist-feminist lyrics – which sometimes lead somewhere and sometimes into the void – they process states of lust, anger, intoxication and senselessness: Fuck the Banana!
Jejeje is a Spanish onomatopoeia which stands for a skeptical mocking laughing and/or for an apologetic laugh. Jejeje is also a Berlin-based trio that combines post pop, post punk and math max rhythms with a minimalist approach. Band members are Jordi (Parmesano, Nunofyrbeeswax, El Gos Binari), Itacate (Roto) and Zutoia (Muerte y Destrucción, Come ‘n Wait). They got together thanks to the existence of Ojalá Esté Mi Bici, a DIY music collective from Barcelona, and to a house concert of Geoff Farina (Karate) and mOck in Berlin in 2018. Until now, they have self-released a split tape together with their friends Nunofyrbeeswax. Additionally, in December 2022 they appeared in a Xmas punk cover compilation released by Discos Pinya (Barcelona). All three members are looking forward to the release of their first album in 2024, co-release with Repetidor.
