When I was in school, my teacher taught us about the "holiday season" and the "xmas adjacent" holidays from minority cultures, like Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc. One of the things she taught us was that for Hanukkah, Jewish families would set out their shoes in a line and give gifts to each other in their shoes... I've always wondered if this was actually true or not. I've never heard any of the Jews I've met say they do this and I've always felt it was a little too on-the-nose-similar to the whole xmas stocking thing. I guess my main question is, outside of the menorah, how else do Jews celebrate Hanukkah? Also is the shoe thing real or did my teacher pull that out of her ass to xianize Hanukkah?

I have never ever heard of the shoe thing. I can't say 100% that it's not a thing, but I've tried looking it up and can't find anything and I've never heard of it. So. Yeah.

Chanukah isn't a "major" holiday in Judaism in the same way Christmas is for Christianity, so while Chanukah is a fun holiday, it's in no way the most important.

Also, giving gifts on Chanukah is a relatively new thing. As in, it only arose in the 20th century because of assimilation. The holiday we have involving gift-giving is Purim, where we give Mishloach Manot, gifts of food to each other. There's nothing wrong with giving Chanukah presents, but it's not the key part of the holiday.

Some Chanukah traditions we do have:

-Eating fried foods to commemorate the miracle of the oil. Every diasporic Jewish group that celebrates Chanukah has its own fried food.

-Eating dairy to commemorate how Judith fed Holofernes cheese and wine to make him fall asleep before she decapitated him.

-Playing with a spinning top.

-Giving gifts of money called "gelt" to each other. (Ashkenazi)

-Chag HaBanot, the Festival of Daughters, is celebrated on the sixth night of Chanukah and celebrates the girls and women in the community and female Jewish heroines in history. (Mizrachi)

-Singing Chanukah songs.

-Retelling the Chanukah story.

When they move in together, who gets the most say in decorations? What do they each have to have in the house? I think theyd have like an equal say in the decorations. they dont really coordinate themes or color schemes for the rooms or anything like that I think they just get whatever they like which results in their apartment looking like an absolute mildly overstimulating patchwork mess. and they like it that way :) barring the obvious Battle Stuff both of them would like posters kieran maybe a little moreso (they diverge in like. the specific interests those posters reflect? florian has alot of game merch and kieran has band merch) and also I think florian would like collecting figurines and plushies and stuff. oh also I think kierans various masks he carves would be used as decor around the whole place :3

How do they celebrate holidays? dependssss on the holiday I think. for most holidays (a la xmas halloween new years) its probably more like a big friendgroup hangout session. I dont think either of them would really give a shit about valentines day. HOWEVER they would absolutely go all out for the festival of masks every year. they fly out to kitakami, kieran makes custom masks for them every year, they have a little picnic date night on oni mountain etc etc. yes both of them make jokes about that field trip. mostly kieran though LOL

Who likes to dance with, or sing for, the other? honestly I dont think either of them are very inclined to sing for eachother I dont see that happening. at most I think florian would threaten to burst out into song and kieran would go "dont do that." and thats the end of that bit. DANCING THOUGH... I can see that happening during the more mellow hours (blacklight has those? surprising I know) and it would be initiated by mostly florian aswell. overall shes probably the one that specifically references the swordfight more between the two of them. except it would be actual dancing for all of maybe 5 minutes if theyre being generous before it inevitably devolves into an elaborate game of tag

What would their lives be like if they had never met? alot worse! neither of them would get that push from eachother to break out of their shells and both of them would slowly rot inside of those shells having never gotten the chance to bloom into their own person leaving both of them as hollow husks of themselves :D also this would butterfly effect into the continuation of the protag/rival feedback loop so Everyone would be worse! fun!

Who is better at comforting the other? How do they usually comfort each other? kieflos communication style is veryyyy. telepathy image. so I dont think their type of comfort would be like verbal atleast not in the traditionally 'comforting' way? kieran especially would Not like the traditional verbal comfort LOL. their brand of comfort is probably just providing a distraction of some kind or like just Being Around. no need for words. I wouldnt describe either of them as being 'better' at the comforting thing either... idk its hard to judge since theyre so Weird about it

What reminds them of each other? honestly it might be an easier question to ask what DOESNT remind them of eachother. like if theyre not in eachothers direct presence theyre probably still on eachothers minds to some degree so basically anything is fair game here. if I had to point out something specific though I think theyd go "oh theyd like this" alot at stuff that pertains to the others interests. like. kieran picks up a plushie from the arcade when he passes by bc florian likes them. florian picks up a cd of that new album from that band kierans been enjoying lately. etc. you get the idea

Who remembers the little things? both of them! its thematically important to both sides that they get to see Everything from eachother so both of them would hang on to every little detail about eachother <3 theyre so disgusting can we put them down please

How do they make up after an argument? Who is the first one to apologize? They Don't! kieflo toxic-to-everyone-except-themselves moments. they have a lot of arguments yes but its nearly almost always stupid shit that theyre arguing about for the thrill of the debate itself. theyll get passionate about anything if theyre pit against eachother. so like. no need for apologies. if the argument actually WAS something substantial, then... well for one theyre both too stubborn to apologize and also tbh I dont think either of them would Want to be apologized to? verbally atleast. ...ok well florian would enjoy getting apologized to but then she'd feel grosser about That than the actual argument but kieran would rather die. they work on like a karma system I feel like. instead of saying sorry they just have to repay the other through like a pokemon battle or something

What gifts do they typically give each other? actually I kinda already half answered this in the what reminds them of eachother question. their gifts to eachother are just stuff they know the other likes. its a very casual arrangement like 'oh they mentioned they wanted that' go in and buy it no biggie

the reason why my August vacation is so important...

This is a long, kinda emotional for me journal <3

As I mentioned a while ago, I was splitting my usual two weeks in June of debauchery (sleeping & laying in the sun & hiking in the woods outback lol) into one week last month and then saved the last week for the end of August.

I also wanted to explain the significance of this trip! Less about having to justify my time off and more about 'eeee excite omg!' and wanted to share with y'all!

SO a long time ago when I was a wee Charlie, from age 0 up to 21, I was incredibly close to my grandparents on my mom's side. My nana died when I was 15, and while that took a huge toll on me, I was fortunate enough to have my grandpa till 21. These two people were absolutely second parents. My parents did a good enough job raising me, but they had huge fights and my father had anger issues and it caused a lot of wounds. These were the people I could always rely on, when I couldn't rely on my folks.

They lived 2 hours away on a wonderful lake in a lil tiny trailer over looking it. I spent weeks at a time there, even the occasional month. I learned to swim in that lake, which in hindsight prolly wasn't the safest idea due to its depth, and grew up to be obsessed with swimming. Learned how to sail, ski, fish. Learned how to bake, tend a garden, how a fresh bowl of fruit in the morning should be before breakfast.

We'd swim 3x a day, sometimes just to float and cool down before bed, since there was no a/c and the summer nights were hot. Laid on our backs and counted stars like the Lion King. Fried trout on the grill after we'd caught them, had watermelon seed spittin' contests. My grandpa grew pumpkins and carved my name into one, so that the writing grew bigger and bigger over the months. I had one pumpkin live from September to April.

My handprint is on the last cement step leading down to the beach. It was eroded when we scattered my grandpa's ashes in 2014, but I remember where it was, how to place my palm to compare.

I guess I'd say I had a mixed childhood of various great, good, bad, and horrible things. Like most people, yanno? But those golden summer days on the lake were 100% a part of who I am today, and where my many of my happiest memories come from.

Due to me being in college, cost to heat the place in winter when they had no intention of living there, my family sold the property on the lake to an investor who planned to rent it out.

This was 2014. The same year he died, the same year my horse died (within 2 months of each other) and one of my father's many health issues landed him in the hospital from Oct to Dec, so that he spent xmas on an iv stand. With everything going on, we had no time or money for a big dinner, or presents that year.

I guess that was the first year I realized childhood was truly and officially over, and it was time to grow up. Many of us have that marked moment on our life.

Time passed. I finished college, went back home after turning down a few out of state jobs to spend time with my dad, who I had a feeling didn't have much time left. Turned out I was right, as I came home in 2015 and he died in 2022. There was an accident in '16 where he almost bled to death on our kitchen floor, but I was able to provide pressure/medical care and give him some more years.

Shortly after we moved in 17, I was notified that the house on the lake had been rented to someone who unfortunately had a lot of issues mental health wise, and they had eventually abandoned the property. It sat, rotting, and got so covered on the inside in black mold the county leveled the place and destroyed it.

We had left it fully furnished due to the buyer's urging. Ancient, stunning mid century and older furniture from my great-great grandparents time. My nana's organ player. The rocker my mom and I sat in. And, frankly, to quote one of those popular songs, the house that built me was just gone.

I figured that was the end of it, and cried and got angry/sad and then moved on and just tried surviving as covid hit later on in the years.

Turns out, the man who rented it decided that wasn't going to happen again. He put a new trailer on the property, and rented it out for vacationing due to it's location. We didn't know this until I stumbled across it while daydreaming about a vacation on the lake that I missed it was a relative, one I could at least go back to for a few days. My heart skipped so many beats when I saw the address and paused, thinking there had to be come mistake. It wasn't.

Not only can I spend time on that property again (in a new house which honestly might be for the best) But turns out, for whatever reason, they kept the furniture separate and placed a few pieces into the new house. There's a photo of the rocker in the layout photos. The two level lamp they had is still intact and functioning. I booked the place for a week immediately.

It's expensive for me, but my girlfriend and I will make it work. (Certainly not like we have far to travel.) We're going to be there smack dab in the middle of my Grandfather's birthday. I haven't had a true, just-for-me vacation since 2015 when we went to a camping ground. The excitement I have for this is immeasurable.

The dock my Dad and Grandpa put in themselves is fixed up. The crumbled little cement step is still there with a tiny indent, where my 4 yr old hand was pressed. I am going back to this place, and going back in time for just a short while, to heal and have fun and be a whole mess of emotions. I never got to say good bye to my Nana or Grandpa.

But I can say goodbye to them now, and say 'hello again, old friend' to the lake, and the new little house that sits before it.

That is why i am so excited about august. I know I don't share personal things on here a ton, but I wanted to share this. Thank you for reading this far if you have, I appreciate it.

it's a packed house at the kiramman residency every year, with extended family filling the giant mansion with some council members who otherwise wouldn't be making such a hassle out of it. it's nerve-racking for cassandra but seeing you chat away with her nosy family, watching as you bob your head to the song in the background just makes her remember how worth it this is.

if she could she would be standing next to you all night, hooking her arm with yours while drinking egg nog, but guests are to be taken care of.

she wishes she could be walking around in the cold snow, tucked away in a thick jacket with you, sharing memories since that is her favorite part about the holidays.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE; the santa clause

christmas in noxus was not as big as anywhere else in runeterra, so she isn't so much interested in it. first, that is, soon when you are putting the lights on and seeing how excited you seem to be it grows on her, so much so that it becomes her favorite thing.

lifting you up to place the top ornament has to be the best part about it, teasing you how much of a shorty you were compared to her and needing help.

aside from the amazing food that you told the cooks to make, what you whipped up for her to drink next to the fire was hot cocoa. she never tasted something like this made out of chocolate! and those little sweet pillows on top you toasted somehow, delicious!

renata finds it adorable how you insist on a tree, how you explain that food has to do a lot with the holiday and that the presents are essential but not that important.

she is absolutely against for you to lay in the snow to make a snow angel, no way josé. for starters, you could get sick, not to mention that you never know what is under it, for all you could know there might be some dirt or worse there that somebody disposed of.

she takes you out for christmas dinner and to see some christmas stage performances in piltover. favorite part of the day and the holiday, sitting with you in the darkness in the theater box with a glass of champagne or whatever you wanted to drink. holding hands, making little comments about the performance and the music.

the holidays for sevika were spent at either the brothel or the last drop, given that she really didn't have anyone special to spend the celebration with- she picked someone up. but when you popped into the picture her whole ritual was re-forged and sevika was to the moon and back about the holidays coming around, so much so she was the one buying matching ugly christmas sweaters for the both of you.

sevika is that cheeky person who would be dancing around you, even trying to get you to join her while singing christmas songs from the top of her lungs.

her favorite is the baking part, not because she makes the best cookies or pastries but because of how fun it can be. throwing flour at each other, dropping eggs, and just the all-around chaos. non of you can bake but making gingerbread cookies can't be that hard, right? it's a mess but they turn out okay, they might look ugly because the frosting is melting but the two of you made it!

Christmas Exchange!

As part of the lovely cyberpunk xmas exchange, I got to write a lil piece for @mango-parfait :DD Hope my little idea suits what you was picturing :3 _________________________

Still early in the morning, the household of V and Johnny was already awake and getting ready for the day. Johnny, as so often, sitting in the living room on the couch, his guitar in his lap and a cigarette dangling between his lips. He was just scribbling some notes to a song down, before he tried another riff on the guitar, crossing out the previous notes just to try it another way once more. V was in the bathroom, styling himself up and deciding what he was gonna wear for today. It would probably, as so very often, end with him wearing his favorite red jacket, which was fitting so nicely to his bright yellow optics.

“It was at 8 pm, right?” V's voice echoed through the apartment, hoping his partner would hear or answer him, even when the rockerboy was busy on his guitar. And it only took a moment before the answer came. “Yeah, that's what Kerry said.” V nodded to himself, taking a short look into the mirror and brushing once more through his hair. 8 pm, at Afterlife. More than enough time to do a lot of stuff together. He left the bathroom, fully dressed in his usual gear, placing a soft kiss on Johnny’s bearded cheek as he passed him. Just as he wanted to say something else, his phone was ringing. Seeing that it was Regina who called, made V accept the call with a worried expression, while he started to pace through the room. Johnny made only an unhappy grunt, watching his partner pace through their shared apartment, he could tell from his frown alone, that this was no ‘Merry christmas, enjoy the holidays’ call. After all, they were living in Night City, and Night City was always busy with Merc work, even just before christmas. Maybe also, because most of its citizens wouldn’t really celebrate this old holiday. In the end, it was Johnny’s fault that he and V would celebrate with the rest of their friends, there was still a somewhat nostalgic feeling towards Christmas at Johnny’s end and with that he invested all around him to spend the holidays together,letting work be just for a few days at the end of the year. V was doing his best to shift all his work away from the next few days, but sometimes, things went different than planned, especially in Night City. “A fucking what now, in City Center?”, Vs gaze shifted to Johnny for a moment, making a grimace, before he listened again to the caller. Whatever it was Johnny was really hoping V would decline this dumb gig and hold up to his promises. Slowly Johnny stood up from his place on the couch to get closer to V and may pick up one or two pieces from his call. Lazily he slung an arm around Vs waist and tried his best to understand what was going on. “... a Cyberpsycho. Rambling through … stores.” A deep sigh left the rockerboy, V wouldn’t deny that case at all. He would always take serious gigs like that, at any time of day or night. They discussed over and over again, that it never could be more important than his night sleep, or planned meetups with their friends, only to always end it with V being clear about it. Gigs like that always had top priority for V. Crossing his arms in front of his chest he watched V closely with an annoyed expression. “Yeah sure, I am on my way, Regina. Give you a call once I get him down.”, V ended the call and looked over at Johnny, an apologetic smile on his face. “Don’t look at me like this, J. It’s not a big thing for me, but maybe could save a bunch of people in his hood.” “We were clear with this.”, Johnny turned his back to V, his arms still crossed and his voice showing far too well his annoyance “Not a single gig on the holidays. For once.”

“I know, Johnny. But come on. I cannot say no in a situation like this. I promise, it will go smoothly and I will be back right in time when we head out to the Christmas meetup.” A deep sigh left the rockerboy again, as he looked over his shoulder at V. He couldn’t really voice what was making him so uneasy about this all, but the feeling just wouldn’t leave him. Still, he nodded it off. “Fine. But I swear to god, if you are not on time, I'm gonna punch you in the dick.” “Damn it, fine!”, in a playful attempt to surrender, V raised his hands and smiled at Johnny. As always he felt the concern from Johnny, but they wouldn’t talk about it, they never did. “I promise I will be back in no time.”

Hours went by, and still not a single message or call from V. This wasn’t the usual way V handled stuff. But today pretty much nothing was really usual at all. Johnny's gaze was glued to the windows as he really couldn't believe what he was seeing. It was snowing. Here in Night City, just as if this was some cute little Christmas Wonder. But with all the years without snow, this unusual weather turned the city into even more chaos. Drivers weren’t used to handling their vehicles in this weather, nor did most people have anything good to wear for the sudden cold. A slow sigh left the rockerboy as he shifted his gaze from the window to his phone. Still no message, no call. Johnny was worried about V, but coped it with being angry, like he always did. V promised to make it in time and was already late, of course he was. “Fucking snowfall. Bet that’s just some marketing gig from a Corp. Disgusting, they really use everything to make their sales go up. Fucking corpo rats.” 

He searched through their wardrobe, picking up a few sweaters and jackets that look somewhat warm, but neither he nor V had much clothes against the cold, as it was pretty unusual by now. In the end he picked a black sweater without much on it and a fur-lined leather jacket he found deep down behind all the summery clothing. Another quick gaze on his phone, still no message from V, and he headed out to meet up with the others at Afterlife. Hopefully V will join him soon. If not, he would have to search for him. A sudden wave of negative thoughts, what may have happened to V hitted Johnny, as an especially cold wind gust blew into his face, making him feel the freezing cold far too well. He shook his head, trying to get rid of the bad thoughts. As he was slowly walking through the city, watching the snow settle on everything and lulling the city in a certain kind of silence. Johnny could remember his childhood days, before all this chaos emerged in his life. Just playing in the snow, throwing snowballs with his friends or building a snowman with the most goofy design. After a short walk, that was surprisingly refreshing, Johnny reached the Afterlife. Without much problem he got inside and already could spot their friends at one of the big corner tables, sitting together and talking about whatever. Johnny took a deep breath before he slowly headed towards them. “Hee Johnny, you finally arrived. Where’s your better half?” Kerry asked towards him in a mocking tone and made room for Johnny to sit down next to him. From Rogue he got a mug with steaming hot cocoa, he took a long sip and noticed the sudden silence around him. “What?” “Is V.. not coming?” Misty’s voice already showed deep concern. It wasn’t usual that one would appear without the other. Johnny made an annoyed huff, placing the mug back on the table. “Dumbass is just late, like always. What else do you expect from him?”, his voice was snarky and angry, hiding far too well his own concern for V and his well being. “Did you hear from him? The kid will absolutely not be used to this weather.” “Nah. And not gonna call after him, not his babysitter.”, Johnny fumbled for his pack of cigarettes and lit one up, taking a long deep breath from the cigarette. He never asked for permission for doing so, and got angry gazes for it. But his mind was filled with concern for V. An hour. V was an hour over the time, and with every passing minute Johnny got more agitated. He couldn’t really follow the conversation anymore, his leg twitching nervously up and down. Only Kerry seemed to notice his behavior, but also kept his mouth shut about it. Still not a single message from V. Johnny only picked up several accidents and problems the news were talking about in the background, more than usual, because this weather was pure mayhem for Night City. Finally the door swung open, echoing against the wall with a deep thud and made once more fall everyone silent. Without any word V came to the table of his friends and partner and sat down next to Johnny. He looked exhausted and like shit, here and there stains of the works he just did.

“Where the fuck have you been?”Johnny lowered his voice but the anger was clear in it. 

“Eh. After the Psycho, there were a bunch of problems because of this… this white shit. People are going crazy in the city. Trying to eat it, sell it, telling stories how this is a sign that the world is ending. You know the drill. I helped to get a few hoods back under control.”, V gladly took the hot cocoa from the table and took a few thirsty sips, before he looked at the faces of his friends. A small, tired smile grew on his face. “You dumbass had your friends worried! And that's all you say? Could have called, you know?” Johnny flicked against Vs head, looking at him, but all the anger from his voice wasn't visible in his gaze, there were a bunch of other emotions. “Sorry to let you wait. Somehow all my calls or messages couldn’t connect through. I guess another problem with this fucked up weather.” Johnny was dumbfounded and for a rare moment felt silent. The thought that the weather may be the reason for V not texting or calling him never occurred to his brain. Of course, the net as it was by now, would have problems with stuff alike. He sighed and nodded it off, deep down happy that V was finally here. V took another long sip from the cocoa, breathing out the hot steam with a content demeanor. Now after they got this out of their systems, he scooted  closer to Johnny, leaning his head on the rockerboys shoulder. Johnny gulped down the urge to say something nasty and was deep down really glad that his partner finally was here at his side, in one piece, without bad injuries. “You are a fucking idiot V.” “And you are an asshole.”

An amused huff left the rockerboy as he slung his arm around Vs back, pulling him a bit closer and sharing the warmth with him. With a raised brow, Johnny noticed how very calm and silent V got, taking the cup of hot cocoa out of his hand and placing it back on the table. He only got an approving hum with his Merc, who cuddled deeper against the rockerboy, fully ignoring that they were in public and both Rogue and Kerry were watching this scene with puzzled emotions. A small smile played around Johnny's lips, watching his Merc dozing off in his arms. He would never say it openly, but this was exactly what he was always craving, just a moment of peace with his beloved. Johnny’s hand rose up to carefully brush through V’s hair, while his gaze shifted back to Rogue and Kerry, picking up the conversation with them again.

( important note: for 2023′s year end ceremonies, this is split into two parts so this part will be for the IDOLS. )

with the year end season happening, all of the LGC artists ( idols/actors/models ) will be attending various events during the months of december and january.

( important note: for all of these projects, KANG MAXIMILIAN will be officially revealed as one of the new members of AGITO starting from NOVEMBER 28. )

SEASON’S GREETINGS

for 2024 season’s greetings, here are the following themes for each of the groups:

AGITO - EGARIM ( vaguely inspired by stray kids’ japanese season greetings 2023 ). in preparation for the season’s greetings, the AGITO members will be asked to pick a flower that best represents them and/or the group. the chosen flower will be used as a prop for the individual member photos.

CRYSTALLIS - WINTER IN AVERTINE ( vaguely inspired by aespa’s seasons greetings 2023 ). in preparation for the season’s greetings, the CRYSALLIS members will be asked to pick a crystal or gem that best represents them and/or the group. the chosen crystal will be used in the member’s crown ( for the individual photos, if it’s not too rare and/or expensive ) or as a prop that they would hold. due to the number of members in the group, there will also be unit photos ( eg. HYEJOO, SOMIN, YURA / ICHIKA, SOYOUN, YUXI / JAEHWA & YUJIN ) with their crystals. 

FABULA - TRIP TO FLORINTHE ( vaguely inspired by twice’s japanese seasons greetings 2022 ). in preparation for the season’s greetings, the FABULA members will be asked to fill out a survival guide handbook. in the individual member’s pages, there will be questions revolving around how they would survive florinthe and three tools or inanimate objects would they bring if they were stranded in a jungle ( florinthe ). those items will be used as props for the set of the individual members’ photos.

NOVA - DREAMS ARE LIKE STARS ( vaguely inspired by dreamcatcher’s season greetings 2022 [sweet dreams] ). in preparation for the season’s greetings, the NOVA members will be asked to choose a constellation that best represents them and/or the group. the constellations chosen will be displayed in the background of various group and individual photoshoots ( eg. sky background, lights on the bedroom, posters, etc. )

TYPE ZERO - SAILING WITH TZ ( vaguely inspired by nct 127’s season greetings 2023 ). in preparation for the season’s greetings, the TYPE ZERO members will be asked to fill out a passport-like booklet. in the individual member’s pages, there will be information about their sailboat ( to symbolize the group paving way for the other lgc groups & as the navigators in the webtoon ). they will be asked to briefly describe and name the boat. the name of their boats will be featured in the individual photos with some of the props that are given to them. 

VERSUS - ON TOP OF THE RUINA MOON ( vaguely inspired by nct 127’s seasons greetings 2024 ). in preparation for the season’s greetings, the VERSUS members will be asked to choose a moon or planet that best describes them. during the individual photos, their respective planet/moon will be displayed in the background.

the photoshoot and behind the scenes videos for this will take place sometime around november and december, depending on the groups and their schedules. each of the season’s greetings will come with a photobook, desk calendar, planner, sticker set, and photocards ( group and individual members ).

ok some more thoughts on the eps (under read more cos of potential spoilers lol)

starting with the slightly more negative stuff so i can end with the things i like lol

there was a lot of over explaining of some basic who things, which i didnt mind that much considering they were being told to ruby, but but it did definitely feel like 'rtd is trying to introduce this to a new audience so he's kinda spoon feeding them everything' which is a lil frustrating as a long time fan lol...

on a similar note some of the flashback things in space babies were completely unnecessary given they were from the literal same episode pfft... like at least in the 2nd one they used flashbacks as voice overs which worked a lil better, but i'd still rather they just relied on the audience to understand the call backs without having to SHOW them u know?

the cgi babies mouths were weird, i didnt like them... i also wasnt the biggest fan of the music notes as tentacle like things coming from maestro... surprised i havent seen anyone complain about this given how vocal some of y'all were about the use of cgi in chibnall's era....... hmm

speaking of, i think some of the pacing issues in chibnall's era have stuck around a bit because that 2nd episode esp started off really well but then fizzled out in the middle, and the resolution went on for waaaay too long lol (also after maestro said that in ordered to defeat them they needed a musical genius, i kinda assumed the doctor and ruby would turn to eachother like 'hmm who could we go to who's a musical genius in 1963...' and then it cuts to john and paul wondering around the studio or smth... like idk there wasnt much connecting tissue between the sections, it just hung around on the kinda boring 'music battle' between the doctor and maestro... and like i get theyre trying to make ncuti's doctor more of an action-y style hero, but that felt too much like the battle with the toymaker.... also yes maybe i'm also mad there werent more scenes with the beatles in them SUE me lol! like literally most other episode (think of the van gogh one) the feature figures from history, theyre the main focus of the episode so it kinda sucked they were barely there :///////)

the musical number at the end of that ep wasnt my fav i'll be honest.... like it was fine, but in the xmas ep it made sense to have a fun musical number and it worked with the rest of the ep, but this one just felt like 'well the story's over ... but we still have 5 minutes left to fill so random song and dance number!'

final thing that i didnt love was (and bear in mind i know nothing about filmmaking lol) that some of the shots and edits felt a bit off? or didnt feel like they worked in a scene or just could have done with a retake from a different angle ... like especially some of the maestro scenes, like the performance was so good but the camera didnt seem to really be working with them very well? and in general some of the conversation scenes had the vibe of what you see in theatre lol? like where characters talk to each other via looking out at the audience lol... and like i dont mind that kinda theatrical way of producing scenes usually, but in moments when it's an intimate conversation between two characters, it did feel a tad weird lol...

edit: another thing i didnt mention but i did recently see a post talking about this, but i did think it was odd that most of the beatles ep is set in the 60s but it doesnt actually discuss the doctor being a black man in what was a very tough time to be non-white lol... like not only does the beatles music directly come FROM being influenced by black artists in america (smth they even discussed lol), but a part of the episode is about how important music is to humanity, and nothing shows that more than the way music the african slaves' sang whilst on plantations was adapted into blues/jazz and then later into rock n roll/pop... like music was an act of keeping a part of their humanity alive when they were being brutally dehumanised... (and like in part i get why rtd didn't go into this, as he hasn't the best history of dealing with black characters... but it WAS a notable absence and does kinda tell me the doctor being black isnt going to play into anything, which sucks, since chibnall did at least make it so the doctor being a woman DID massively alter the way she was seen... i might make another post about this lol)

ok things i liked!

nan-e was seriously great (cant remember what the actress is called but she does such a great job!!!! in a way i'd love for her to show up again she's such a fab character lol)

the whole resolution of the space babies ep was really great tbh! also the reveal the bogeyman is actually made of bogeys was legit really funny lol! even the fart at the end like yeh it's childish but who doesnt love a fart joke lol?

ncuti is great at acting all suave and confident one minute only to be on the verge of breaking down the next, aka the literal epitome of the doctor lol! also love his relationship w/ ruby ofc

ruby was great too! tho atm idk if we've really gotten a true grasp of who she is as a character u know? atm it does feel a lil like the whole clara mystery thing where her character comes 2nd, but i'm sure as the series goes along we're gonna get more lol

loved that cilla black was in the devil's chord ep!! that's it tbh just loved that

also loved that the doctor mentioned his family this early on, specifically susan! i do kinda wish they had used a flashback sequence when he was talking about the genocide cos i kept thinking 'wait... is this the time war or is this what happened w/ the master at the end of the (???cant remember the number.... 12th?) series??' which was several years ago and would have been great to refresh our memories on.. also meant we could potentially have seen jodie again lol!

i saw someone on .... somewhere complain about the 4th wall breaking but i actually really liked it lol! especially the non-diegetic comment! idk if i want every episode to have that, but i enjoyed it in that one! one thing about rtd's first era that i appreciate is that he experimented a lot with the format of each episode... which meant we got things like love & monsters, which like,yeh, it's..... An Episode for sure, but i appreciate that it's told from a different perspective! so in a way it feels like he's doing that kinda thing again, where each episode feels connected but still distinct from one another, if that makes any sense??

i liked the fake beatles song about the dog lol... partly because it didnt even sound that far off of something they wouldve written on a later album (by paul) pfft... kinda sucks they didnt buy the rights to at least one actual beatles song, even just to play a few secs of it lol...

overall, neither episode blew me away, but they weren't terrible either lol... i'm also shocked how similar this series is to chibnall's era, which is why it's so bizarre to me that people continue to be like 'oh doctor who is finally back!' like bitch for one it never went away lol!??! and for two, a lot of issues people had with chibnall's (and to some extent moffat's) era are still there, but now cos it's headed by rtd again people arent complaining about them the same way they did before... idkkkkk

i've also already talked about this, but i do still think the releasing at midnight thing is fucking dumb, especially for us british fans! i get that maybe that's a stipulation from disney but it doesnt mean i have to like it... also didnt like that 2 episodes were released at once like ???? why lol idkk

hi curious baha'i anon again !! I got busy w school and didn't get a chance to properly look at Tumblr until recently 😅

I would LOVE to know about the music though, and what the children's classes were like/what was generally taught. I've always thought the religious education my family's church and grandparents (separate) church provided was lackluster and actually taught very little so I'm curious if that differs in other religions.

you mentioned feast days and other specific worship days, idk if you know about Catholic holy days of obligation but it's basically there's a ton of feast and celebration and worship days but there's a specific list that's the Most Important and you Have to attend mass on those days if you're physically able otherwise it's considered a sin (Xmas + Easter being the biggest, but technically every Sunday is also an obligation), is there something like that in bahá'í with the feast days and worship days? like certain ones are "lower stakes" compared to others? And along that same line of thinking, is it viewed (socially or religiously) as bad and/or a sin (unsure if the concept of sin is even prominent tbh) to miss days?

also I want to reiterate that it's totally fine if you don't want to answer these asks ^^ I don't want to burden you or anything

You're good! I'm also a little busy currently--gonna write an entire essay tomorrow so, fun. and don't worry, I answer and offer because I'm entirely willing to talk and share about it :)

To answer your question, music would be done a few different ways. Frequently it'd be on CDs, which people would bring to feasts (my family has a few), or it would be sung live. If it was a children's class, it'd usually be a song in English, often the adaptation of a prayer to make it more memorable for kids (sometimes with made up dances, too). Then, on holy days during the equivalent of mass, there'd frequently be singing/chanting live in Farsi (because the faith originated in Persia/that area). Just community members--and they were always great at it, too

This isn't one of those, but this song in particular is ingrained in my memory, because they'd play it on the big projecter every single time the Martyrdom of the Báb came around. And since I don't speak Farsi I can't recall any specific ones of those, but here's an example chant. Also in looking through YouTube playlists, I found this song, Strive, and we 100% watched this video and sang this song at some point. Same with this one. So those are a few examples, but there's a lot more.

As for children's classes, they'd go something like this: everyone shows up, mingles until the hour starts, then all the kids get together in a circle in the big room at the back. There, this one old lady who's been there as long as I can remember (who I won't name) would lead us in a few prayers, those prayers turned into songs I mentioned--maybe full songs from time to time if the adults joined in. Chatting a little, touching base. Then the littlest kids (under 5) would go with their teacher to mostly do crafts with some stories told about the faith, mostly just keeping them occupied.

Those 5-10 would go to the actual children's classes, where what you learn depends on who you're with. That lovely old lady was my teacher from 5-10, and every week she'd prepare these worksheets for us to read through. usually it would be about different prophets (abraham, mohammad, etc) and different important events in the faith's history (e.g. what is Ridván and why do we celebrate? who was martyred and why?). An emphasis on Bahá'u'lláh and the people closest to him (like his son 'Abdú'l-Bahá), as he's the main figure of the faith. She'd tell us stories with the handmade worksheets as references to take home. And every week she'd have some kind of craft for us to do (suncatchers, making pillows, etc.) while we talked about the topic of the week. I might have the worksheets buried somewhere in my house. Then there's 11-14, which is Junior Youth classes; these are much smaller because there's fewer people in that age range. My classes were held at the center (same place as the children's classes), but there would be other groups that would meet at people's houses or other places. Once again, depends on who's teaching what you learn, but in mine we went off this series of workbooks. They were basically about practicing virtues (patience, generosity, etc.) in one's life. They'd present a scenario and ways it could be handled, and then we'd do little written exercises discussing the choices made--which were virtuous, how others could be better, what we would do, etc. Lot of discussion. There would also be different prayers/writings to memorize or read. I unfortunately don't think I have these still to take pictures, so you'll have to imagine.

Then when you hit 15 you're an adult in the faith, and until you're 30 you're considered a Youth. There are Youth groups and such where you continue this kind of thing, just with other Youths as a full. equal participant instead of being taught. I never did that, but I do think I would've been adequately prepared; I've forgotten a bit since, but I had a pretty thorough understanding of the foundation when I turned 15. Of course there's always more to learn, but it was solid--in my opinion

As for obligation, based on my experience, I wouldn't say it was ever like you HAVE to attend or you're sinning. The concept of sin...exists, I suppose? Like the word appears in some writings, but not like what I've seen of Catholic and Christian sin--and we don't have a hell or damnation. It's less that you're sinning and more like it's a poor choice/action to make, and you should stop and reflect on it and the distance this puts between yourself and God. And then make better choices that bring you closer to God. Because in the afterlife there's no heaven/hell, it's more just how close you are to God. if that makes sense. I'd never hear the word sin spoken, the closest thing we'd have was talked about in terms of having an absence of God

And there's no one way to measure how close you are, so not attending the celebrations of certain Holy Days doesn't solely determine that. Some are more important than others--e.g. the Bicenntenial of the Twin's births was within the last decade, which was really really big, so people really wanted to attend. But people missed children's classes all the time. And feasts. No one was ever pressed about someone missing--unless you were a kid looking forward to seeing someone your age who turned out to be absent. Attend when you can, but you can be incredibly close to God even if you don't, which is between you and him, so there was no judgement I saw (again, reminder. this is all my personal experience raised Baha'i in America). Though often the most devout people attended more often--not because it's sinning not to, but because they wanted to attend more. If that distinction makes sense.

Anyway, that's a little snapshot of what it was like--I'd be happy to answer further questions from anyone if there are any. I could go through the children's class workbooks and share some of the people covered, explain some of the holy days (like Ridvan), share some of the prayers, etc. hope this helps :)

PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on complete package art to "Amrep Xmas," the fierst live album by American noise rock band UNSANE, released in 1997 through Man's Ruin Records. Sleeve art/package design by the late, great Frank Kozik (1962-2023).

ALBUM OVERVIEW: "Recorded live to a mobile unit in St. Paul, MN, in late 1996 for the Amphetamine Reptile Records Christmas party, "Amrep Christmas" was UNSANE's first foray into live album territory, later bested by "Attack: Live in Japan," an import-only set recorded in Tokyo.

Noise rock doesn't always translate well from the stage to tape, what with the unpredictable dynamics of small clubs and the difficulty in getting clean recording out of overdriven amps. Accordingly, this album is rather uneven. It certainly captures the manic intensity of the band performing live, but there are a few glitches, including tape drop-outs, an ill-timed reel change, and some small errors in song execution.

Such phenomena also indicates that, unlike many (perhaps most) big-budget live albums, there were no overdubs -- this is strictly plug in and play, live to tape. Tonally, Spencer's chugging Telecaster guitar is on target, even if his voice shows decided road wear. The set, while focusing primarily on the "Scattered, Smothered, and Covered" album, contains a few gems from "Total Destruction" and the band's infamous version of LED ZEPPELIN's "Four Sticks.""
