Poongar Rice - Benefits
Poongar rice also called as ‘Poongar arisi’ is one of traditional rice variety of Chennai (Tamilnadu),which uses natural farming methods (no use of any harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides). It is flood tolerant and require less water. This variety is very similar to Mappilai samba. It is also called as ‘women’s rice’, as it cures most of women’s hormonal issues. It is especially beneficial to pregnant women’s and lactating mothers.
Poongar Rice – The Women’s Rice This rice is rich in anthocyanin( an antioxidant). Anthocyanin gives it colour (reddish brown) and flavour (nutty). Poongar rice also contain mineral like Iron, Zinc, Magnesium and Molebidinum. Its husk is also nutritious and tasty. This rice generally comes in boiled and semi-polished form.Poongar rice is one of the most wonderful option for making soft idlis, dosas(especially Neer Dosa) and porridge.
HEALTH BENEFITS:
A) Helpful for pregnant women: Its kanji(usually called Pez, water extracted out of boiled rice) is said to induce normal delivery in pregnant women.
B) Removes bad sweat from body: It contains anthocyanin(antioxidant)which helps to kick out the bad sweat out of the body and provide a healthy living.
C) Boost immune system: It increases haemoglobin content in blood and thus boost immunity system.
D) Contain vitamin B1: It contains vitamin B1 which is specially helpful in case of mouth and stomach ulcer and stomach related problem.
E) It is also helpful for headache and is said to boost memory.
F) Diabetes: It generally prevents the glucose from mixing in the blood stream thus preventing ‘diabetes insipidus’. Though there are modern methods and variety with faster productivity but they cause many harmful effects on our body. Traditional methods are chemical free and harmless, also traditional variety of crops have higher content of nutrients thus even if they are produced in small scale they can be beneficial for consumers and can be harmless at greater scale. So organic farming can bring greater yield but there is need to select the best possible method.

Poongar rice benefits the women of all age categories.
Why it’s so special or celebrated for women’s health????
Poongar rice is so rich in micronutrients like iron, magnesium, zinc and Vitamin B12, compared to other red rice varieties. Our descendants believed that these nutrients are highly recommended for women, right from her puberty stage to prenatal and postnatal to  lactating phase and till her menopause period.  Women needs to handle a lot of hormonal changes during these phases. Especially, with today’s lifestyle and genetically modified diet, it’s taking a toll on their health. They face adverse hormonal imbalances like early puberty, conditions like PCOS/PCOD, Infertility, thyroid and various uterus related issues. To ward off these challenges for your loved ones,  it’s better they take the right step of consuming right food at right stage. Now this Poongar Rice comes as a life saver, when consumed from their puberty stage, it provides all the essential nutrients, regulate their harmonal functions and boost their immune system.  This Poongar rice indirectly aids to curb PCOS/PCOD condition by its low carb, less glycaemic index and rich fibre content. Poongar rice naturally has a nutty flavor. This factor eased me to try Aval Kesari with this rice. It's a sweet pudding made with simple ingredients like Rice flakes, sugar, ghee and few flavouring agents. It’s an alternative recipe for Kesari/Kesaribath which is traditionally prepared with Rava/Semolina. This sweet is made during Navratri, Krishna Jayanthi festivals. Here, I used my mom’s way of preparation. She soak the flakes for sometime, once it puffs up, sauté in little ghee, add sugar, flavouring and garnishing ingredients, Ta-da, your instant  Aval kesari is ready at your table for serving. It’s way too easy, can be prepared by a newbie as well.

It is one of the most effective treatments for paralysis. It also prevents paralysis. poongar rice along with vegetables is known to heal one sided paralysis. The child inside the womb should not be affected by any hereditary problems, poongar rice has the capability to prevent such conditions.
It cures celiac disease and kidney boils. This rice cleanses the blood and provides all of the health benefits to the human body. In the event of a shortfall, it maintains and increases Hb levels. It should be taken once a day, preferably first thing in the morning. This rice is known to make people hungry at the correct time. Because small children do not have the habit of eating at the appropriate times because they are not hungry, this rice will generate hunger at the appropriate periods. The same is true for pregnant women; because they do not experience hunger during pregnancy, poongar rice is highly recommended.

Cultivating a rice-eating habit amid Coronavirus lockdown
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/cultivating-a-rice-eating-habit-amid-coronavirus-lockdown/
Cultivating a rice-eating habit amid Coronavirus lockdown
“Research says it takes 21 days to form a new habit. We have 21 days at home — yes, it’s a lockdown, but it’s also an opportunity to reflect on our lifestyle, and understand the impact of it on our health, environment and community at large,” says Jayanthi Somasundaram of Chennai-based Spirit of the Earth, an organisation which focusses on conservation and cultivation of heritage produce.
Spirit of the Earth is now encouraging everyone to share recipes that use heritage rice via Instagram, which they will in turn post on their Instagram handle, @spirit_of_the_earth_2017. With the focus being on mindful eating and immunity building during the lockdown, information on the rice used for each dish will also be shared.
The visual stories to be shared for the next 21 days will revolve around three major themes.
The first will be what heritage rice actually is — What have you tried? Is it healthy? Is it easy to cook? Is it tasty? Why should one opt for heritage rice, over the polished hybrid variant?
The second will be mindful living — Where does your food come from? Have you been to a farm? Do you know a farmer? What are the native varieties of crops? Is organic really helpful for the soil?
The third will be immunity-building foods — What are the colours on my plate? Is more colour healthier? Can rice build immunity? How much rice should I have for each meal? What can I make with the rice water?
“The recipe has to be something simple, nothing too fancy. We believe these stories will encourage conversation in so many homes,” Jayanthi says, adding, “Change may not come right away, but these conversations will certainly strike a chord. Once people are aware of what they are buying, where they buy, what they eat and how they live — they will evolve from mere consumers to contributors to society.”
As many families are spending mealtime together, there is a surge of interest in cooking healthy meals. At this time, Jayanthi says they hope to introduce people to native varieties of rice, which are not just healthier, but also better for the planet. “At our 50-acre agricultural land in Manjakudi, near Tanjore, we cultivate close to 40 different varieties of heritage rice, and are constantly striving to revive more varieties,” she says.
Wide range
When it comes to heritage rice, each variety has a unique taste, aroma and property. Fragrant ones include gobindobhog, ajara ghansal, katarni, sukhdas and iluppai poo champa. From the farming perspective, rice varieties can be classified into kuruvai (short duration crop, 60 to 90 days) and champa (long duration crop, 120 to 130 days).
“We have certain rice varieties that are best suited for making idli and dosa — garudan champa, poongar, kullakar, iluppai poo champa, thooyamalli and navara. For preparing traditional snacks like murukku and thattai, we recommend thooyamalli, perungar or ramakali rice. This is the best season to make vathal and vadams, and for that thengapoo champa is best suited,” Jayanthi says.
She adds, “This activity is for people to understand that simple changes in lifestyle can bring about much bigger changes too. We think this is the time when people are going to think about life and reflect on their choices, and hopefully make better decisions at the end of the 21 days.”
Share your heritage rice recipe via email to [email protected] or call 9500082142. Recipes and visuals will be shared on the Instagram page.

I’m excited about this week recipe, it’s Tamil New year. What could stop me on this occasion to feast you all. I came up with a Classic South Indian sweet, Kesari but with a twist. It’s our simple but scrumptious sweet. And the twist -I made 3 distinct flavours to create 3 delicacies to surprise you…😍♥️.
1) Sweet Nutty flavoured Coconut milk Kesari– I made this with regular semolina sautéed in ghee and cooked in coconut milk and tender coconut water, then sweetened with sugar and garnished with nuts and raisins. I used turmeric powder for natural colouring.
2) Vegan, Healthy Poongar rice Kesari-I prepared this with Poongar rice/Women’s rice which I ground to gritty texture like semolina and cooked with coconut oil and jaggery. Here, the rice itself imparts golden brown colour to Kesari. I explained in detail about the health benefits of Women’s Rice in Poongar arisi aval upma and Aval kesari. You can substitute Poongar arisi with any red rice varieties available in the market (follow the same procedure).
3) Luscious, Creamy Custard Apple Kesari– this is again semolina and milk based kesari but with the inclusion of Custard Apple it elevates the texture and taste to the next level.

In the last 4 weeks, we took a journey on our traditional rice varieties namely Karuppu Kavuni/Black Rice, Poongar/Women’s rice, and Mappillai Samba/Bridegroom rice. We prepared Healthy, soft, and spongy idlis and restaurant-style Tomato Red Chutney, Aval Kesari/Rice Flakes Pudding, and Appam/Pancakes, Aval Upma/Poha with these kinds of rice. This week, it’s going to be Kaattuyaanam Arisi/Rice, which can be translated to English as Forest Elephant Rice. This is again a traditional, unpolished, organic red rice variety. The name in Tamil defines as Kaattu for wild, Yaanam for elephant. You can derive 2 meanings for it. One, this Paddy variety grows so humongous like 7 feet in size that an elephant can hide behind it. Second, if you regularly consume this rice, it gives you the strength equivalent to the elephant’s legs which holds its entire body weight. This rice variety is rich in calcium which is a vital nutrient for bone strengthening and growth. It’s unusual to see rice being a rich source of calcium. Apart from improving bone density, it also   Fight against Arthritis, Enemy of diabetics, Delays appetite, Rich source of Antioxidant and act as anti-ageing, Accelerates healing. It also improves the immune system, heart health and decreases cholesterol. If you are a bit sceptical to consume this rice as a replacement for your regular rice, then start with simple tiffin recipes like idlis, dosas, appams. This week’s recipe helps you out in such a way that this rice will become inevitable in your diet. Yes, I prepared the Mysore dosa recipe with this indigenous rice. That too in a mixer grinder which will put a huge smile on my North Indian and other nationality friends who don’t own a wet grinder.  Mysore dosa differs from Regular dosa in its ingredients but preparation remains the same.  The addition of a few ingredients like toor dal, channa dal, semolina, sugar enhances the flavour and colour of the dosa.

Last 3 weeks, we took a journey on our traditional rice varieties namely Karuppu Kavuni/Black Rice, Poongar/Women’s rice, and Mappillai Samba/Bridegroom rice. We prepared Healthy, soft, and spongy idlis and restaurant-style Tomato Red Chutney, Aval Kesari/Rice Flakes Pudding, and Appam/Pancakes with these kinds of rice respectively. This week, being the fourth edition of the theme Indigenous /traditional rice varieties of Tamil Nadu, we are going to celebrate and honour Poongar/Women’s rice again. Why Poongar rice again? As I’m the mother of two teen girls I've wanted to drench them with these nutrients-loaded rice, which deals with all the Woman’s hormone-related challenges. I already specified in my early posts, that I’m a person who believes in “Food is medicine”, when it comes to my family, how will I forsake it. So, I thought to include this rice in their diet frequently. I prepared Aval Kesari with this Poongar rice flakes, which will fulfil my elder’s sweet tooth. For my younger, who loves spicy and savoury food,  thought of preparing a dish which satiates her palate. So, I came up with this recipe, Aval Upma or Poha, utilizing the same Poongar rice flakes. Poongar Rice comes as a lifesaver, when consumed from their puberty stage, it provides all the essential nutrients, regulates their hormonal functions, and boosts their immune system. It’s an instant, gluten-free breakfast option and a healthy grab too. Southern India It’s named Aval Upma. While western India, they call it Poha, their staple food kind of. Preparation remains the same with a slight variation of ingredients.   The only pre-prep needed is soaking, especially this indigenous rice flakes needs an extended soaking time. Rest all are breezy. I made a healthy twist by replacing the white rice flakes with this traditional rice variety, Poongar Rice,. But feel free to replace it with any rice flakes whichever is available to you and follow the same prep except the soaking time reduces if it’s normal white rice flakes.

Last 2 weeks, we took a journey on our traditional rice varieties namely Poongar/Women’s rice and Karuppu Kavuni/Black Rice. We prepared Aval Kesari/Rice Flakes Pudding and Healthy, soft and spongy idlis and restaurant-style Tomato Red Chutney with these kinds of rice respectively. This week, it’s going to be Mapillai Samba Rice, Bridegroom rice in English, which is a traditional unpolished red rice variety of Tamilnadu. Why this rice is claimed to be Bridegroom rice? In our Tamil folklore, it’s a custom for the groom-to-be or newlywed bridegroom, to exhibit his valor and virility to the bride-to-be or the wife and her folks. He needs to lift a heavy round rock in the mid of the village to prove his prowess. To accomplish this ritual, he’ll be fed with this Samba rice variety to boost energy and stamina. It also strengthens and builds his muscle to lift that rock. This is how the rice derived its name Mappillai Samba which defines as Mappillai for Bridegroom and Samba for the season it’s grown. This rice abounds in nutrients and health benefits. Here, I transformed the regular appam, into Mapillai samba appam to turn into a Healthy and nutrients filled tiffin. I replaced half of the idli and raw rice with this healthy rice and the result was amazing. Appams were so soft in the middle and crispy on the corners, serve these curved beauties (healthy ones are always curved and beautiful, aren’t they… 😉😍) with Kori ghassi /Palak Chicken for non-veg options or Tirunelveli Sodhi/ Thanjavur kadappa for veg options.

This poongar rice is a beautiful red unpolished rice. It has a high fibre content and helps to raise haemoglobin levels. This is the rice that women should eat. If pregnant women consume this rice on a regular basis, it will help in a normal birth. This rice minimises leg and hand bloating during pregnancy, lowers blood pressure, and prevents diabetes and thyroid issues that may arise during pregnancy.
One of the traditional rice kinds in Tamil Nadu is poongar rice. Because to the high anthocyanin content, it is bright red. It will be the colour of blood when it has been cooked. This rice is known to have a high number of strengthening components among all traditional rice kinds. Because it keeps the haemoglobin level at 12.5, it is known to prevent anaemia in pregnant women.
