2020
Part of me wants to say that 2020 was just a terrible year. And in some ways it was. But I can’t ignore that in so many ways it wasn’t. In the macro, it was, for the most part, a pretty terrible year. It was a year of frustration and anger and disillusionment and violence and disappointment. I fear that it is a year that will have long-lasting and far-reaching repercussions. But in the micro, I am blessed to say that I was not too affected by the situation. I know that I could have and should have conducted myself with more grace and patience this year. I let my anger and frustration and worry take a hold of me and I took it out on those around me. But when I put aside those emotions, I can appreciate all the blessings I received.
I am grateful for all the unexpected time I got to spend with family this year. I am so grateful for the seven months I spent with Mom. Probably the last time we’ll ever live together again and maybe the closest we’ll ever be. I am grateful for that strange spring and that loooong summer that in some ways doesn’t feel like it happened at all. I am grateful for watching the sun rise most mornings from the sunny little office that I painted yellow. Watching the first wisps of pink crest the hill and illuminate the dew on the lawn and the grey cat on the fence and the roses blossoming on the bush in the back corner of the garden and the downy white blooms on the crepe myrtles. I am grateful for the chill of the hardwood floors in the morning and the baking heat as the sun shone full through the windows in the afternoon. I am grateful for calling to Rosie through the thin, warped glass windows as she lay on the deck or sniffed under the gate. I am grateful for Friday Facetime sessions with Ngawang. Sitting in the sweltering office and talking about nothing and everything. Making plans for future trips and lamenting what the world had come to. I am grateful for sitting on the top step in the afternoon when I was finished with work. Listening to Genesis or Leviticus, drinking strawberry milk or eating berries or an acai bowl, the sun browning my back and Rosie coming to sit beside me, nudging her head under my arm. I am grateful for throwing the Frisbee with her and playing keep away and running around the back yard under blindingly blue afternoon skies or beneath pale pink and purple sunsets as the crows squawked and returned to their roosts in the tall trees on the ridge.
I am grateful for my morning chats with Mom. Walking into her room once I finished my morning meetings, and commiserating about the news and laughing about our lack of plans and lamenting her empty retirement and complaining about my boss and talking about the neighbors who passed by on their morning walks and boxing with Rosie as she lay at the end of the bed. I am grateful for afternoons on the front porch, watching the little world go by on C Street, joking with Steve and Bill, playing American Trivia, reading languorous novels while Mom read the paper, looking at houses on Zillow and whiling away the long afternoon hours. I am grateful for weekend mornings at the dog park. For walking up the hill in invariably inconvenient shoes then sitting high on the bench at Gerstle Park as Rosie trudged through the ivy and did her looping patrol of the hillside. Or sunny, windy days at Mill Valley Park, watching dogs reluctantly run the agility course or race across the broad lawn after a ball or Frisbee or dive unhesitatingly into the muddy shore of the bay. And I am so grateful for mornings at Piper Park. Sitting on our favorite bench beneath the thin maple, looking out across the verdant lawn at Mt Tam standing sentinel over us with Hall nestled in the middle ground where I spent so many hours playing soccer or sitting in a circle with my friends in the back corner of the field or laughing over our lunches at the picnic tables. I am grateful for the familiar faces at the park, the people whose dogs’ names we knew but not their own. I am grateful for iced chai’s sipped on the park bench as mom and I talked about our school days while Rosie lay panting in the tall grass behind us in the shade of the great willow tree looking out at the high creek.
I am grateful for our afternoon drives when there was nothing else to do. For the chance to explore Marin. Driving down Center Street through sleepy Fairfax and over the hill to San Geronimo. Cows and granite boulders and scraggly trees dotting the fields that crept up the hillsides as hawks circled overhead. I am grateful for that long, straight road through that wild, wonderful country. I am grateful for the shaded windy road through the redwoods towards Nicasio and the little white school house on the corner. I am grateful for the backroads towards Petaluma past the Nicasio Reservoir with hills so vibrantly green and rolling and tranquil that I was reminded of Ireland. I am grateful for the turn onto Petaluma Road and the lazy bends up the hill with sudden vistas of the valley below. And I am grateful for the 37 towards Sonoma and Napa, for the horses on the hill and the bridges over the bay and the beached boat on the side of the road and the long low lane through the marshes. And I am grateful for all the laughs and talks we had during those drives while bluegrass and rap and oldies and classic rock played on the stereo. I am grateful for afternoons at Stinson and Rodeo when we could forget the wider world and enjoy the simple beauty that California still has to offer as we watched dogs and children frolic in the surf and dig in the sand.
I am grateful for my trip with Michelle and Dash. For honky tonk country music and long lazy drives through the central valley and the sunshine in LA and the quiet of Utah and the vastness of the sky and the rainbows of Bryce Canyon and the awe-inspiring beauty of Zion and the blinding white of the Booneville Salt Flats and the gaudiness of the Las Vegas Strip and my grueling hike with Dash and our long talks on the road or in the evening. I am grateful for the time I got to spend with Michelle. For our tours through the City and the East Bay, spending the whole day exploring and talking and complaining and laughing, agreeing on so much. For our dinner on New Year’s Eve, driving to a hilltop in South SF and eating dumplings out of to-go containers and exchanging Christmas gifts and trying to make sense of the craziness of this year. I am grateful for the time I got to spend with her family. At her niece’s birthday party while the children splashed in the pool and her dad told me about Nauru. And at Samuel P Taylor as we sat around the campfire and sang Russian and Slovakian folk as Steve strummed along on the guitar. And at Labor Day weekend with Mom, eating hotdogs with Michelle’s parents under the sprawling oak in their backyard and seeing Lenka and Janka and Kimmie and Alex. Mom and I talking on the way home about the unique sadness of being an only child and the joy that a big family brings.
And I am grateful for my three trips to Hawaii this year. And especially for this last one. I am so grateful for cool mornings on the lanai, watching the shadows recede across the lawn and the sea lighten from grey to blue in the morning sun, the myna birds stirring and shrieking, me slowly drinking my guava juice while reading or embroidering and then sitting with Dad and talking about movies and psychology and ideas for articles and albums. I am grateful for morning walks on the beach, for the dogs and the surfers and the damp sand and flip-flops left in the shade and the waves creeping up the shore. I am grateful for lunches on the lanai or at Hula or Mama’s. For the tropical rainstorm at Hula Grill as I drank my strawberry daiquiri and for the light rain at Mama’s as the colossal waves crashed against the coast. I am grateful for drives along the seaside while music played, with the multi-hued ocean to one side and the steep, sculptured mountains shrouded in fog on the other. I am grateful for lazy afternoons napping and reading and playing trivial and scrabble and cards. For time to be together and relax. I am grateful for home cooked meals, the three of us joining hands around the table for grace and piling the plates to one side to talk after we’ve finished eating. I am grateful for our dinner at Spago’s, watching the sun set behind the palms and the lights illuminate the beach, sharing sushi and keeping an eye out for celebrities. And I am grateful for nights after dinner watching good movies and bad. Talking through plot points, arguing about Gal Gadot’s attractiveness, predicting the storyline of Soul, and marveling at the athleticism of Gene Kelly. I am grateful for the warmth and beauty and slowness of Maui.
I am grateful for the breath-taking sunset that I saw from the plane last night, the sun dipping down into the Pacific and bathing the hills of Pacifica in gold while the city sparkled farther north. I am grateful for the sunrise I saw today from the back of an Uber on the New Jersey Turnpike, the sky confetti pink and yellow, silhouetting the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson.
This has been a hard year. A trying year. But a year for growth and reflection and pause. A year that threw most of my goals and hopes out the window but that gave me so many other blessings in return. This was the first year since 2013 that I did not leave the country. I got to spend 365 days in the country that I love so much and I got to explore new parts of it and fall in love with it more even as I worry over its future. I spent every holiday this year with people I love, Fourth of July with Dad and Susan, my birthday with Mom and Ray, Thanksgiving with Ngawang and Aja and Deanna and Abina and Ritcha and Christmas and New Year’s with Dad and Susan and Mom and Michelle. I must admit that I am glad that 2020 is over but I am thankful that I lived it.

Aston Martin collaborates with S3 Architecture to design first residential project
US studio S3 Architecture worked with luxury carmaker Aston Martin's architectural design service to create Sylvan Rock, an angular black-cedar home in Hudson Valley, New York.
With building works set to start in early 2021, Sylvan Rock by S3 Architecture will be the first property to be fully realised under Aston Martin's Automotive Galleries and Lairs service, which launched last year.
The form of Sylvan Rock house will mimic jagged rock formations nearby
The service sees the carmaker team up with architecture practices across the world to design bespoke spaces where its clients can show off their most cherished motors.
Sylvan Rock will be situated two hours away from Manhattan, hidden amongst a 55-acre plot of forested land in Hudson Valley that will allow inhabitants to "reconnect with nature".
Luxury cars will be displayed in a glass gallery-style room
A sweeping driveway that spans 2,000 feet (609 metres) will lead up to the front door of the house. The facade will be composed of expansive panels of glazing and blackened cedar.
Its dark metal roof will be faceted to emulate the jagged shape of surrounding rock formations, at one point dramatically dipping downwards to form a covered entryway.
The house will also include a subterranean office
"When designing, we always let the land speak first and respond to it," said Christopher Dierig, partner at S3 Architecture.
"It's as if the home is born of and launching from the landscape. The resulting design blends our modernist aesthetic with the privacy and context of the rural location to create a unique luxury experience."
Parquet flooring and dark-wood joinery will feature throughout living spaces on the ground floor
Cars will be displayed in a subterranean gallery-style room that's completely enclosed by panels of glass.
It will look through to a wine lounge where bottles are kept in floor-to-ceiling latticed shelves that subtly nod to the intersecting lines seen in Aston Martin's logo.
Lounge areas will overlook the green landscape
At this level there will also be an office where the inhabitants can escape to do work without interruption. It will feature a huge window that offers an up-close glimpse of the craggy rocks outdoors.
From here guests can head upstairs to the ground floor where there will be a kitchen, cosy den, dining room, formal sitting area and an array of other shared living spaces that look out across the home's decked pool area and verdant landscape.
Other rooms will have views of the home's pool
Aston Martin – which will be responsible for the home's interiors – imagines each room to be finished with parquet flooring and rich chocolate-brown storage cabinetry.
Marble-topped tables and plush, leather-trimmed soft furnishings will further enhance the opulent feel of the home.
The first-floor master bedroom will cantilever towards the Catskill mountains
Elevated views across the treetops and towards the nearby Catskill Mountains will be available up in the first-floor master bedroom, which will cantilever over the house's ground floor.
"Our architecture and design team was immediately in sync with the Aston Martin design team, both emphasizing clean lines and the luxury of natural materials and textures," the studio's partner, Doug Maxwell, told Dezeen.
"Working with them we evolved our creative process to view the residence in a similar way as designing an Aston Martin car – by designing in 360 degrees, where no specific angle or facade took precedence or dominates."
Sylvan Rock will also include three pods where guests can stay
The grounds of Sylvan Rock will additionally accommodate three gabled guest pods that will stagger down a grassy embankment towards a pond.
They will enable visiting friends and family to have a sense of privacy when they come to stay but, when not in use, can alternatively serve as a health and fitness space or a quiet area for homeschooling.
There will also be a small produce garden where fruit and vegetables can be grown, as well as a pitched-roof treehouse where inhabitants or guests can choose to spend a night under the stars, closer to the site's wildlife.
There will also be a treehouse on site
Aston Martin's Automotive Galleries and Lairs service is not the brand’s first venture outside of carmaking. Last year it unveiled its inaugural motorcycle model, AMB 001, which features a 180-horsepower turbocharged engine and a carbon-fibre body.

New Post has been published on https://toldnews.com/travel/36-hours-36-hours-in-mendocino-county/
36 Hours: 36 Hours in Mendocino County
Ninety miles north of San Francisco, Mendocino County is just far enough away to have narrowly escaped the Bay Area’s radical transformation during the tech boom years. In contrast to other formerly quiet Northern California backwaters, Mendocino maintains its rural identity and eccentricities, including its longstanding status as one of the country’s major marijuana-producing regions. Where there is big news, it’s largely culinary. The 30-year-old chef at Elk’s Harbor House Inn was recently named a James Beard award semifinalist for Best Chef in the West. Besides the Harbor House’s eight- to 12-course, $150 per person prix fixe dinners, there are cheesemakers, upstart breweries, exceptional farm stands — notably Fort Bragg’s Nye Ranch and Caspar’s Fortunate Farm — and farm-inspired restaurants, like the long-awaited, soon-to-open Fog Eater Cafe, which began as a farm pop-up, and will serve “California cuisine with a Southern twang.” After years of population stagnation, young people are moving in, or coming home, and committing themselves to Mendocino’s fertile soil and sea. It’s a second wave back-to-the-land movement and a welcome reprieve from the Bay Area’s buzz.
Friday
1) 3:30 p.m. Tall trees
Take Highway 128 through the Anderson Valley, to Hendy Woods State Park, where you can stretch your legs beneath the awe-inspiring giant redwoods or take a dip in the Navarro River. Then, backtrack to Boonville’s Pennyroyal Farm, the sister farmstead to one of Mendocino’s most beloved wineries, Navarro Vineyards. Sample rich goat and sheep milk cheeses, fresh and aged, exceptional pinot noir, and farm-made pickles and preserves. Sit out back, beside a gurgling fountain, and watch sheep meander beneath the vines. In the spring, a farm tour (11 a.m. daily) offers the overwhelming cuteness of nursing lambs and kids.
2) 6 p.m. Supper stop
For dinner, reserve a table at the Boonville Hotel, a former roadhouse that’s now a beautiful, family-owned inn with a wide porch, flickering fireplaces when the weather’s cool, and a seductive patio garden for outdoor dining during the warm months. The restaurant’s new chef, Perry Hoffman, is from Sonoma’s James Beard award-winning SHED and, before that, Napa’s Michelin-starred Étoile. Here, his prix-fixe menus (starting at $58) include lively dishes and unexpected flavor combinations. Imagine mussels with charred cabbage, grapefruit, fennel and seaweed or a whole stuffed quail with artichokes, shiitake mushrooms, bolting kale and brown rice vinegar.
3) 9 p.m. Change is brewing
After winding through the redwoods and along the coast, head for the former logging town of Fort Bragg, for some small town night life. The 135-year-old Golden West is a dive bar that was bought in 2015 by a couple who grew up locally and returned after living in Los Angeles. The bar has maintained its vintage character (neon signs, shuffleboard and pool tables, faded black-and-white photos of logging scenes) while upgrading its extensive liquor cabinet and serving excellent cocktails, and has occasional but unexpectedly good live music, as well as a Sunday Bloody Mary bar. Or, for a family-friendly pub in a tucked-away location, seek out Mendocino’s newest brewery, Overtime Brewery, which teams with Nye Ranch in making its exotic seasonal beers, like the “Thistle Dew” artichoke ale or Nye Ranch Cucumber Batch. Take a couple of crowlers — a 32-ounce can filled from the tap and sealed on site — of your favorite beer to go.
Saturday
4) 8 a.m. Super bloom
Tucked into a strip mall, Cafe Jaavy — the younger sister of the longtime local favorite, Los Gallitos — has colorful oilcloth tablecloths, a salsa bar and a breakfast menu that includes savory Mexican breakfasts like chilaquiles (tortilla chips simmered in a flavorful, mildly spicy sauce, served with beans and eggs, $9.50) and standout huevos rancheros with chorizo ($9.50), plus sweeter offerings like banana and berry crepes ($8.99) and generous smoothies ($4.50) made with fresh fruit. The Tropical, with mango, apple, pineapple, melon, chili and lime is particularly tasty. Then, head for the 47-acre Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, where 124 species of rhododendrons put on a spectacular show in April and May.
5) 11 a.m. Sweet soak
Drive south to Mendocino village to walk its photogenic streets and gawk at the immaculately preserved Victorians. Pop into Frankie’s for a scoop of locally made Cowlick’s ice cream. Among the cafe’s 16 rotating flavors are chai, Campari grapefruit sorbet, yellow cake batter and mushroom. Then, take a restorative soak in Sweetwater Spa’s communal — and clothing optional — eight-person redwood tub, sweat in the cedarwood sauna, or indulge in a massage (starting at $110 for 50 minutes). There are also private tubs ($25 per hour), which are enclosed but open to the sky; if a starry soak is your thing, Sweetwater is open until 9 p.m.
6) 12:30 p.m. Pizza pit stop
Next door, Cafe Beaujolais’s weekend-only takeout window, the Brickery, serves pizza ($13) with big, perfectly charred air pockets and daring toppings, like Moroccan-spiced rabbit and garlicky New Haven-style white clam pizza. On sunny days, the backyard garden is idyllic for sharing a pie and savoring a glass of rosé or a craft cider.
7) 2 p.m. Glass for the masses
Fort Bragg’s signature attraction, a former town dump that was transformed by time into a beach of gleaming sea glass, has been badly picked over and is no longer the dazzling sight it once was. For a glimpse of its former glory, head to the odd little International Sea Glass Museum south of town, where Captain Cass sells bags of so-called Seed Glass ($4.95) to replenish the beach’s supply. Across Highway 1, the Glass Fire Gallery displays fantastic blown-glass creations in the form of jellyfish chandeliers and mushroom-shaped table lamps. While in the area, go for a stroll along the newly opened Noyo Headlands Coastal Trail. After more than a century of the headlands being occupied by a sprawling mill site, the town now has access to its coastal bluffs, where California poppies blaze orange in the spring, when it’s also possible to spot migrating whales spouting offshore.
8) 3:30 p.m. Local treasure
For a dose of Mendocino’s wonderful eccentricity, visit The Larry Spring Museum of Common Sense Physics, a tiny two-room storefront museum that celebrates the life and work of the local inventor, lay scientist and World War II transport pilot, Larry Spring. In the same small building, Lost Coast Found has a charming selection of vintage home goods: midcentury stereos, cheery 1970s-era coffee cups, along with used books, postcards and miscellanea.
9) 5:30 p.m. Fresh caught
Have an early, California-style dinner by the water in Noyo Harbor, where you have a difficult choice of dining options. For fresh, crispy fish and chips, bundle up and sit on the riverside deck at Sea Pal Cove, where dinner guests include sea gulls, there are $5 pints of high-end craft beer, and views of passing fishing — and, in season, whale-watching — boats. A few doors down, Princess Seafood Market & Deli is a woman-owned and -run fishing operation with its own boat and seafood restaurant. Princess serves reasonably priced, locally caught seafood, including whole Dungeness crab ($27.95), barbecued Royal Miyagi oysters ($12.95 for a half dozen, and a grilled prawn po boy ($15.95). During chilly coastal evenings, the deli’s tented seating area provides heat lamps and freshly laundered blankets. Then, pick up a Coast Packet and take a gamble on a local performance. One of the joys of small town cultural life is the unexpectedness of what’s available from week to week, whether it’s the wonderful independent Flynn Creek Circus or a riotous political play at the Mendocino Theatre Company.
Sunday
10) 9 a.m. The Greenwood Good Life
On your way through Mendocino, grab a takeout breakfast — an organic housemade bagel with lox and “all the veggies” ($12.50) or “market-inspired” quiche ($8) — at Mendocino’s Good Life Cafe. Sip your coffee to-go as you drive a breathtaking stretch of Highway 1 to the village of Elk, population 200. Tote your breakfast down to Greenwood State Beach to sit on a piece of driftwood, look out over the volatile Pacific and take a long breath of sea air. Then, visit Elk Greenwood Museum and Visitor Center — originally the town’s post office — to learn some Greenwood lore from the center’s knowledgeable docents.
11) 11 a.m. Wine Down
Take Philo-Greenwood Road back to Anderson Valley and taste your way out of town. The options can be overwhelming, but the redwood tasting room at Toulouse Vineyards and Winery is especially beautiful and its wines are excellent renditions of classic local varietals: Alsatian whites and pinot noirs. For three wineries in one Spanish-style plaza, stop at The Madrones complex, where Drew Family Cellars, Smith-Story Winery and the newly opened Long Meadow Ranch, which has estate-grown Burgundian varietals, share a plaza.
12) 12:30 p.m. History lesson
Cut east over Route 253 — a spectacular 16-mile drive across hilltops of moss-draped California live oaks — to Ukiah, Mendocino’s 16,000-person county seat. Dedicated to an extraordinary, but largely forgotten painter, the Grace Hudson Museum and Sun House displays Hudson’s striking and distinctly empathetic portraits of native peoples and immigrants, exhibits the work of local artists, and offers tours of Hudson’s Arts and Crafts home, which she called Sun House.
13) 2 p.m. Buddhist brunch
Head south to the City of 10,000 Buddhas, a former California State Mental Hospital that is now a Buddhist community and monastery. The campus’s distinctive arched entrance is undergoing renovation, but its roaming peacocks, evocative institutional architecture and Jyun Kang Vegetarian Restaurant, which serves tasty vegetarian dishes to a mostly local crowd, remain. Or hop down the 101 to Hopland, where Rock Seas serves an ever-changing menu that riffs on brunch classics — like coconut French Toast with star anise, coconut, brown sugar and mango ($12).
Lodging
In the last two years, two long-awaited new hotels have opened on the Mendocino coast. The Harbor House Inn, in Elk, is a 1916 redwood home which was originally built by the local logging company and designed to showcase the beauty of the region’s lumber. After an eight-year renovation, the inn reopened in May of 2018 with 10 rooms (starting at $355, breakfast included) and a destination restaurant.

Michael Bartley bought one of NSW’s most popular homes in Glenbrook. Picture: Sam Ruttyn Homebuyers used to get excited by houses with a walk-in wardrobe or a glimpse of trees — now you need laser rooms, forests of palm trees and a setting near mountains or the beach. Research into the most popular homes of 2020 revealed COVID-19 has reshaped our real estate tastes, with many seeking out dream homes on the urban fringe or in regional areas — often with unusual features. The listings that attracted the most interest from prospective buyers online included properties on the north coast, Hunter Valley and the outskirts of Sydney. MORE: Seller’s plan to get record low price backfires Firebombed house sparks bidding war Among the most popular was an estate in Dural with parking for 61 cars, a retreat near Palm Beach known as a “moon lodge” and a Blue Mountains cottage styled like a French provincial manor. This Hudson Pde house was the most popular northern beaches listing. Other homes attracting an unusually high amount of interest on realestate.com.au were a Bangalow house styled like a resort, complete with a forest of palm trees. But the most popular listing in Australia was surprising — a North Gosford house with multiple holes in the wall, a rotting deck and a mould problem. The four-bedroom house on Linden St drew more eyeballs than any other Australian property listing thanks to unconventional marketing by the agent. 6 Burrawan Place, Bangalow got a huge reception from buyers. Gittoes agent Richard Faulkner produced a video where he gave viewers a tongue-in-cheek tour of the property describing how he “loved” the kitchen’s “mould splashback” and the “one-of-a-kind stained carpet” in the bedrooms. He also commented that a renovation on the property — damaged allegedly by wild parties — had been started “one punch at a time”. The video went viral. “I didn’t want anyone to think before they came that the house was better than it is,” Mr Faulkner said, adding that most of the interest was from Sydneysiders wanting to make a move. “I’ve never seen this kind of push from Sydney buyers in this area of the (Central) Coast, especially from first homebuyers,” he said. 71 Lilli Pilli Drive, Byron Bay – the Byron area is getting more popular. “Many people are working from home so they don’t need to be as close to Sydney any more so this area is appealing.” Realestate.com.au chief economist Nerida Conisbee said interest in regional real estate had surged since COVID-19, particularly in the Northern Rivers region near Byron Bay. “It’s always been a popular area but it’s become even more popular,” she said. The second-most popular home was the Dural estate with more parking than many offices. The 2.23ha property on Carters Rd, listed for about $6.4m, comes with unique features including rooms with laser technology and green screens. 50 Carters Rd, Dural was the second most popular listing. Images included in the listing for the property showed off the size of the pool by floating a 10m speedboat in it. A cottage at the foot of the Blue Mountains in Glenbrook also attracted considerable interest. Selling agent Milton Player of Chapman Real Estate said people liked the country-style setting. “It is a charismatic home, styled really well but five minutes down the road are kangaroos and gorgeous cliff lookouts … COVID-19 is bringing more people who want greenery and to get away from the hustle and bustle.” // // The buyer of the Glenbrook home Michael Bartley said his family moved to the area because they were tired of the traffic and growing density near their previous home in the Hills area. “We wanted to be near the walking trails and mountain biking trails,” he said. “We didn’t want to be near too much development. COVID was part of it … this house had plenty of garden and character.” 10 MOST POPULAR NSW HOMES OF 2020 1. 1 LINDEN ST, NORTH GOSFORD 2. 50 CARTERS RD, DURAL 3. 6 BURRAWAN PL, BANGALOW 4. 25 PAPERBARK DR, POKOLBIN 5. 71 LILLI PILLI DR, BYRON BAY 6. 29 LESLIE RD, GLENBROOK 7. Journal - Architectural Drawings: 10 Plans for Granny Flats and Guesthouses
Got an innovative residential project of your own? Enter it in the 8th Annual A+Awards for a shot at international publication and global recognition. Submit your projects before February 14th to secure a special Early Entry Discount.
Housing and shelter are at the core of architecture. Shaping the way we live, homes are a reflection of our daily lives and how we make space for ourselves. This is true for granny flats and guesthouses as well, residential spaces that relate to larger living quarters. Usually meant for temporary stays, they are typically designed at smaller scales to create more intimate experiences.
Though guesthouses are often reserved for wealthy clients and the upper class, they reveal unique relationships between space, landscape and privacy. Drawing together 10 guesthouses and granny flat plans, the following projects exemplify this niche form of residence around the world. Made with diverse materials and programs, they illustrate how people can inhabit weekend getaways and long-term living quarters in plan. Together, the projects showcase housing that’s specifically catered to a smaller scale of domestic life.
Guest House by SMNG A Ltd., Lakeside, MI, United States
The guest house on property was completed in 2012 and provides a private space for guests and a remote study for the owner. The form of the guest house was inspired by an Anselm Kiefer painting. On a lead sheet at the center of the artist’s work, a chalk outline of a cube was drawn with diagonally opposite corners chamfered. Transferred to a small structure the cleaving of the corners offered a unique way of both entering and lighting the interior.

Set in a residential neighborhood in Ithaca, this spare guest house rests on an existing pool house foundation. Organized across from the brick main house and complemented by a steel and wood pergola, the guest house creates the setting for an outdoor stone-terraced swimming pool court. With black-honed granite floors and minimalist design elements, the house is a contemporary counterpoint to its natural surroundings.
Off-Grid Guest House by Anacapa, Santa Barbara, CA, United States
Sited on one of the last remaining undeveloped coastal areas in California, this modern guest house resides on a wildlife preserve. Nestled into a steep hillside, the residence was designed with low visual and environmental impact on the surrounding landscape. Disguised by a low profile and green roof, the home itself invites views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding rolling hills, through a generous amount of sliding glass and expansive decks, which cantilever over the foundation’s steep rock face.
Capel Manor House Guest Pavilion by Ewan Cameron Architects, Horsmonden, United Kingdom
The new Guest Pavilion in the Kentish Weald near the village of Horsmonden comprises 2 bedroom suites. The pavilion is located on the grounds of Capel Manor House, an iconic modernist pavilion completed by Michael Manser in 1971. Both the main house and the new pavilion are sited upon the raised, arcaded podium of a ruined Italianate mansion on a leafy estate that was the once the home of Jane Austen’s fore-bears.
Fish Creek Guest House by Carney Logan Burke Architects, Jackson Hole, Wyoming
The Fish Creek project is a 950 square foot guesthouse as part of the first phase of a master plan for a 5-acre sloping wooded property owned by the architect and his wife in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The design was intended to immerse the owners in the experience of the forest both visually and aurally. The house is a simple rectangle oriented on an east-west axis that mediates between the forest on three sides and the stream and a clearing to the north.
Hudson Guesthouse by Janson Goldstein, Hudson, NY, United States
This four-acre hillside site outside of the Upstate New York town of Hudson includes a new guesthouse and pool adjacent to an existing contemporary house. The 20-foot-by-45-foot pool takes advantage of the property’s Hudson Valley views, while the 950-square-foot guesthouse forms an entry court with the main structure. A covered breezeway divides the guesthouse into two sides, one a gym for the homeowners and guests, the other a living-and-sleeping area for guests. The opening acts as a bridge between the sides, allowing for privacy as well as a connection to the surrounding landscape.
Guest houses in Relax Park Verholy by YOD design lab, Poltava, Ukraine
YOD’s guest houses are a variation of the hotel rooms in the spa-complex “Relax Park Verholy,” located in a pine forest in the Poltava region. Houses are built from lightweight metal frame structures made by BF Zavod company (Kiev). The space of the house is 32 sq. meters, and the total weight of the frame with the sandwich panels, covering construction and floors, is 2200 kg. The designers managed to complete the concept and construction within only two months.
Dalefield Guest House by Team Green Architects, Queenstown, New Zealand
The Dalefield Guest House was made as a private space for visitors on a rural site. Providing quarters for the owner’s family and friends, the structure is a simple, tranquil retreat for relaxation and contemplation. Designed as guest accommodation in the grounds of an existing property in Dalefield, the Brief was to provide a place to retreat that offers a guest experience for visitors to his corner of New Zealand.
The Guest House by PARATELIER, Tanzania
Located near a small artificial lake, this project was made as a backdrop against the colors of sand, pines and the blue sky. The guest house’s main function is to be a temporary living space for the guest(s) of the property owner. Additionally, a parking area and storage space for agricultural activities complete the simple program set by the client. One volume, located parallel with the lake, is divided into three parts for three different functions – living, storage and parking.
Overlook Guest House by Schwartz and Architecture | S^A, Los Gatos, CA, United States
The Overlook House creates a new accessible indoor/outdoor second dwelling that allows an aging family member to remain close by the main residence and independently at home. To maintain ease of access, the new 775 sq ft home incorporates the driveway approach and garage into a formalized entry sequence, transitioning fluidly to a cantilevered breezeway at the front door framing views across Silicon Valley.

$1.2 Million Homes in New York, California and Florida
Hudson, N.Y. | $1.195 Million
A Greek Revival-style house built in 2005, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, on a 0.17-acre lot
Built on spec on vacant land in Hudson’s first gated community (dating to the turn of the 20th century), this home is one of several stately houses in the area. It is the last building on its side of a blocklong street, less than five minutes on foot from Warren Street, the city’s boutique- and restaurant-rich commercial stretch. An Amtrak train station is less than half a mile northwest, near the Henry Hudson Riverfront Park. Pennsylvania Station in New York City is two and a quarter hours south.
Size: 2,520 square feet
Price per square foot: $474
Indoors: The sellers, who are the second owners, bought the house in 2009 and made substantial changes. They installed central air-conditioning, opened the second-floor stairwell and landing (which required some structural engineering to remove a load-bearing wall) and updated the kitchen and bathrooms. They also replaced windows, added period-appropriate crown moldings and other millwork and wired several first-floor rooms for sound.
Crossing the colonnaded front porch, you enter a center hall with Brazilian cherry floors that leads past the staircase to the new kitchen. There, you’ll find Smallbone of Devizes hand-painted cabinetry and new appliances, most from Miele. The stovetop is a Lacanche Volnay four-burner that includes a cast-iron simmer plate with a wok ring.
The connected living and dining rooms have cherry floors, 12-foot ceilings and walls painted in a pale gray shade from Farrow & Ball. Each room has a fireplace (gas-burning in the living room, wood-burning in the dining room) with a black marble surround and mantel. The powder room was renovated with a paneled wainscot topped with Art Nouveau-style wallpaper.
Two second-floor bathrooms were combined to create the en suite master bathroom. Striated marble tile covers the walls, continuing into the walk-in shower. The guest bathroom has a shower-over-tub and a pedestal sink.
Outdoor space: French doors lead from the master bedroom and adjacent guest room to the upper front balcony. A rear entrance is approached by a brick walkway through a fenced garden. There is off-street parking for two cars.
Taxes: $17,878

Los Angeles, Calif. | $1.199 Million
A midcentury-modern house built in 1958, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, on 0.28 acres
Offering treetop views in Woodland Hills, in the San Fernando Valley, this one-story stucco-clad house is close to the Ventura Freeway, which takes you southeast into Los Angeles (downtown is 26 miles away). The neighborhood’s central business district is about two miles east, and the city of Calabasas, with a number of shopping and dining options, is just to the west. The 2.1-million-square-foot Westfield Topanga & Village mall, which has luxury stores and restaurants, is about three miles northeast. Hiking and biking trails wind around the almost 3,000 hilly acres of the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve, less than four miles northwest.
Size: 2,029 square feet
Price per square foot: $591
Indoors: Entering a bright-red front door and skirting a walnut partition, you find an open-plan room with terrazzo floors, a vaulted ceiling and a rear wall of glass. The living room includes a gas-burning stone fireplace; the kitchen has walnut cabinets and stainless steel appliances.
The owner converted the original master bedroom into an office, and expanded beyond that to create a 500-square-foot master suite with floor-to-ceiling windows and polished concrete floors. A pair of new master bathrooms includes one with a slipper bathtub and another with a walk-in shower.
There are two additional bedrooms and a guest bathroom with retro aqua tile, double sinks and a separate shower and tub. The furniture is available to buy.
Outdoor space: A large covered patio with a grill area extends off the back of the house. The property is entirely fenced (an automated gate with a pedestrian door gives access) and is planted with Meyer lemon, guava and fig trees. Parking is in the attached two-car garage, with additional room for up to 10 cars in the spacious driveway.
Taxes: $14,988 (estimated)

Key West, Fla. | $1.199 Million
A three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom house with a historic cottage-like front structure believed to be a century old and a two-story addition in back, on a 0.05-acre lot with a swimming pool
Before the singer Julio Iglesias Jr. bought this house eight years ago, it was renovated in a sailboat-cabin style, with efficiently designed wood-paneled rooms incorporating many built-ins. The house is in the Meadows neighborhood, in Old Town, five short blocks northwest of Bayview Park and less than a mile east of the historic seaport. The Ernest Hemingway house is about a mile southwest, and Higgs Beach is the same distance southeast. The Basilica of Saint Mary Star of the Sea, with its Our Lady of Lourdes grotto, is about half a mile southwest. Lore has it that the nun who designed the grotto, which was dedicated 98 years ago, prophesied that Key West would never be devastated by a hurricane as long as the structure stood. So far, so good, but flood and wind insurance are still required for mortgage holders of this property.
Size: 1,424 square feet
Price per square foot: $842
Indoors: A paneled living and dining room with an open kitchen are part of the new addition. Glass double doors open from there to a covered porch overlooking the pool. The kitchen has custom Dade County pine cabinets and wood cladding, even on the refrigerator.
Self-contained guest quarters at the front include a bedroom with a loft sleeping area, an office niche, a bathroom, a kitchenette and a private entrance. There is also a bunk room with two sleeping berths off the kitchen.
A spiral staircase rises to a second small office on the landing, and the master suite. The suite includes a bedroom, a sitting room overlooking the pool and a bathroom with a walk-in shower and porcelain pedestal sink. A television positioned above a fireplace between the two main rooms swivels to face either.
The spiral stair continues to a rooftop observation deck, where Mr. Iglesias installed an outdoor shower, steam room and kitchenette.
Outdoor space: The property is entered through a gate set into a stone wall. There is a rocking-chair porch leading to the louvered front door, and tropical greenery surrounding the backyard swimming pool and hot tub. A structure to the side of the pool offers equipment storage and additional covered seating.
Taxes: $7,502 (based on a $700,174 tax assessment)
