A little reminder that these will eventually be used to shoot at you, to kill you when you get in the way of state interest. They currently have obvious weak-spots like a battery pull-out handle, turn-off buttons, etc., but rest assured they will be improved over time. Time to stop looking at technological monstrosities with awe, and recognise them as the tools of oppression they inherently are.

A New York City councilmember is introducing legislation that would ban the New York City Police Department (NYPD) from using weaponized robots.
Councilman Ben Kallos will introduce the legislation today, which would amend the POST Act, a law that requires the NYPD to be more transparent about its surveillance tactics.
Specifically, Kallos’ legislation would ban weaponizing remote or autonomous robots that interact with people in New York City.
The legislation may be the first of its kind in the country, according to Wired.
The proposed legislation comes after the NYPD used a robotic dog built by Boston Dynamics, called “Digidog,” during a hostage situation in the Bronx last month. The robot has cameras, lights, and a communication system attached to it, according to the New York Times.
Video of the robot police dog, which isn’t armed, went viral, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) criticized it as “robotic surveillance ground drones.” Other police departments in the country have used the robots in the past.
Kallos’ bill would make it so that any kind of autonomous robot used by police—like robot police dogs or drones—that interacts with the public in the future doesn’t have weaponry attached to it, his office said in a statement.
In the statement, Kallos said he wanted to make sure the city didn’t feel “like a Black Mirror episode.”
“The technology to arm robots already exists and in order to prevent anything like that from happening we have to act now, before the technology gets ahead of the laws,” Kallos said.
As Wired notes, Boston Dynamics prohibits attaching weapons as part of the company’s terms of service. But the potential for arming robot police dogs is not farfetched.
Last month, MSCHF, a New York-based company known for its outrageous publicity stunts and product drops, attached a paintball gun to a “Spot” robot made by Boston Dynamics and allowed people to virtually control it and shoot paintballs in an art gallery.

How AI is Revolutionizing Crime Investigation
The British police are really getting into the awesome possibilities of artificial intelligence (AI) to crack some of the country’s toughest and oldest cases. According to cool reports from British media, the Avon and Somerset Police are testing out some cutting-edge tech that digs up useful info that might’ve been missed in traditional investigations. This nifty AI gadget, called Soze and…

There's a lot of concern over the use of military and police robots, justifiable given the issues with many police tactics, but I think this is a great example of how they could be used well. At the end of the day, robots are just tools. Whether they're used for good or evil depends on the people using them, so let's encourage good uses.

Hot take and not to be a killjoy or the shipping police but people treating Viktor or Jinx's aroace headcanons as if they were canon is not the revolutionary take people think it is.
Headcanons are always all right but we have to acknowledge that they are somehow damaging when they apply to stereotypes. It might not be the case for everyone but most of the time people unconsciously assume that disability/mental illness=asexuality. These headcanons erase the freedom of attraction from people who are already seen as unable to have sexual/romantic experiences/desires, when it's completely untrue and harmful.
You can headcanon Viktor and Jinx as aroace, but I have seen people changing their minds once Viktor is no longer disabled (s2 with all of his other forms) and Jinx is no longer as mentally ill (alternate universe Powder). And it speaks wonders of how people see these characters.
"I never thought about Jinx being able to feel romantic/sexual attraction until s2!" To believe she's actually only capable of that when she's not "damaged" is incredibly disturbing. Especially since Jinx has always had a bit of a flirty personality too.
"I've always seen Viktor as asexual, I don't know why!" That's fine. You can headcanon him as ace. But I believe there is a reason behind it, most of the time, if for some inexplicable reason the "vibes" of the disabled character are making you think he's ace.
I say all of this being aroaspec myself, by the way. Headcanon all you want but going to people's posts commenting how "it's weird for you that they have romantic/sexual plots when they're clearly aroace" is not a win at all. It's a headcanon, after all, and it should be treated as such, and that's fine. But it also is damaging to spread stereotypes like these.
Of course the disabled character is asexual. Of course the mentally ill character is aromantic. It's not as revolutionary as you might think, tbh.
Fandom is not activism and it's all right to have any headcanons you want BUT some of them are filled with damaging stuff and perhaps we should look into ourselves more before treating these assumptions as something canon.

Here’s a better idea.
How about we don’t have police robots.
Unless it’s for bomb disposal or search and rescue.
Otherwise it’s just not worth doing.
This is just a bunch of dystopian bullshit.

I like how NPMD makes the points:
1. The presence of bullying and social hierarchies don’t just hurt the victims and those lower in the hierarchy, but in fact everyone within the framework, and should be dismantled by any means necessary
2. The animosity and rivalry of jocks and nerds is ultimately a fabrication of those who wish to hurt others, and a healthy relationship between people with differing interests is both good morally and helpful for all parties
And 3. Given the slightest, even manufactured, excuse, the Police will immediately assault random people.
