Special Fantasy Sequences from The Powerpuff Girls episode SUBSTITUTE CREATURE designed by Andy Suriano
@andysuriano really knocked it out of the park!
Not only are the manga-esque Special Fantasy Sequences in the PPG episode "Substitute Creature" wildly outrageous, but Andy Suriano's rough but realistic caricatures of gorgeous Ms. Keane and the Pokey Oaks Kindergarten students are solid and outstanding!
Andy deserves more appreciation for this.

I'm just a little obsessed with how stiff Ms. Keane and the Professor look here with their hands at their sides.

Thinkin' about how Townsville Alternative/Bloodlines is like, the anti-"average PPG fanfic"
Blossom is gay and single, while the other girls actually get relationships of their own
The Rowdyruff Boys are actually evil and aren't in love with the Girls at all, especially Brick who is literally Satan II (he is also extremely aggressive and eats people alive)
The Pokey Oaks kids actually do shit
The villains who aren't the Rowdyruff Boys actually do shit
The crimefighting is actually a thing that exists
It has Beam! Do other fanfics have Beam? I didn't think so
Butch is gay

quick lil ref/concept for my PPG insert!
Mr. Axel is the upbeat and supportive art teacher of Pokey Oaks Kindergarten who encourages all of his students to express all emotions through creativity! He also has a crush on the homeroom teacher but he's asked you not to tell her that.

"Oooh, California. Birthplace of San Francisco. That sounds like a great place." Blossom spoke. "You'll have to excuse Blossom. She knows a lot about other countries." Buttercup spoke. "Si. (Yes, it's true.)" Bubbles said speaking in Spanish. "And Bubbles does sometimes speak in Spanish." Buttercup spoke half-lidded.
"Well Tina, I'm sure you'll have a great time in Townsville." Miss Keane smiled. "Just know that if there's anything you need help with, you could always ask me for guidance." She said to Tina.
"You may sit down with whoever you wish you sit next to." She said. The girls hope that Tina will sit next to them. Given they became her first three friends.
Happy 26th Anniversary, The Powerpuff Girls
Today is the 26th Anniversary of...
Tumblr media
The Powerpuff Girls!
Tumblr media
It had been 26 years of when Professor Utonium had used sugar, spice, and everything to create the perfect, little girl... until Mojo Jojo when he was a little monkey made Utonium accidentally added an ingredient, to the concoction... Chemical X!
Tumblr media
Thus, the Powerpuff Girls were born! Using their ultra superpowers, Blossom, commander and the leader, Bubbles, the joy and the laughter, and Buttercup, the toughest fighter had dedicated their lives to fighting crimes and the forces of evil!
They were called bug-eyed freaks at first since the movie where their origins were created, but when Mojo Jojo was attacking the city with his army, they became heroes defending the City of Townsville.
We must thank Craig McCracken for making these three into the lovable Cartoon Network All-Stars from our childhood.
So for today, I'm making an open roleplay for these three perfect little girls, and adding them to my multi-muse list.

PPG headcanons/plotbunnies townie and villain edition (non-crossover)
Mr. Green and Ms. Keane live in the same apartment complex. They meet after Keane's breakup in "Keen on Keane" when Green notices that Keane seems upset at the mail center. They start talking and--what a coincidence they both love kids!! A few episodes later Ms. Keane catches a nasty illness from amoeba-tainted oranges after "Divide and Conquer" and the only person she trusts to watch over her beloved class in "Substitute Creature" is Mr. Green. A few years later they get married and have halflings who help the new generation in Townsville stomach monster integration.
Robin's parents divorce not long after Super Friends and she blames herself because they are verbally abusive. They have split custody so Robin is only the Utoniums' neighbor every other week. She has an emo phase in middle school and cuts her hair short. Inspiration: the couple her parents were based on divorced IRL and she knows she's "an accident".
Following from previous, in high school Bubbles and Robin become girlfriends, Bubbles is the one who confesses first.
Buttercup taught Ace how to play bass during some never-made episode where the girls teach them to play instruments as part of a rehabilitation effort after Aspirations. ("If you want to meet girls, why don't you guys start a band?") The gang goes on to form a ska band with Snake on guitar, Ace on bass, Billy on drums, Arturo on trumpet (which he already knew how to play somehow) and Grubber on mic. They eventually split when Ace gets the call from Gorillaz.
Sedusa is Ms. Keane's elder sister. This is the reason Ms. Keane is more sympathetic to monsters and mutants. She doesn't have a lot of time between grading homework to keep up with supervillain activity, so she doesn't know half of what Sedusa has done. At some point they meet again and catch up, Sedusa goes low profile after "Aspirations" and leans more into civilian life. The girls don't find out the relation until after leaving Pokey Oaks Kindergarten, at Ms. Keane's wedding to Mr. Green.
Bubbles stays in touch with Wuzzy after "Roughin' It Up" and learns more about the forest and the Lumpkins clan from him. She even dates Wuzzy for a while and has a farmgirl phase, buying vegan leather cowboy boots that she wears into adulthood. This all helps her connect with and befriend Fuzzy himself, who learns to be more accepting through her. LOOK HOW CUTE THO:
Tumblr media
Mojo Jojo ages very slowly due to his Chemical X mutation. His specific fixation on Blossom culminates in his focus shifting to either converting or dating her rather than destroying her (something he comes to understand as impossible). Even he doesn't know what he wants and has a lot of anguish over how he feels about her. Blossom's willing to be friends if he stops busting the city up, but she's never telling him that.
The Rowdyruff boys grow into manchildren and start "The Ruffcast", a manosphere podcast/youtube where they do nothing but play videogames, pump iron and complain about the Powerpuff Girls being too smart, too fat, and not feminine enough. Mitch Mitchelson gets roped in as the camera guy and occasional participant, which makes Buttercup dump him.
Princess Morbucks goes from wanting to be a Powerpuff Girl to just wanting to be a team leader. She recruits/buys her own team of girls to suit up and boss around, and this becomes a high-turnover job position for desperate people. Every other time the girls meet Princess, her lackeys are different. Daddy eventually disowns her not for being a villain but for being a tabloid magnet in college, forcing her to start over with nothing. One last ditch effort leads her to public records, and searching for any extended family to appeal to, she discovers her birth mother is Sara Bellum [A lesbian who used to be Morbucks' secretary--she loves Mayor because he's a harmless decent man who helped her escape that situation by hiring her]. Bellum takes her in, reluctantly, but she is totally immune to manipulation and sets her straight.
Ms. Bellum eventually runs for Mayor of Townsville and wins. Mayor Mayor retires to Pokey Oaks senior center. The girls visit him often and occasionally consult him for info about Townsville's history if needed--it's much easier for him to remember things from a long time ago, he's not so good with the day-to-day stuff. Bubbles volunteers there with Bullet, who opens Mayor's pickle jars when the nurses can't.
Harry Pitt running gag: Getting referenced as being in juvie and then prison, but it's never stated what he did. We know what he's in for, but the other characters never say.

wouldn’t it be insane if someone drew the powerpuff girls in the eene art style, age them up into middle schoolers and made an au about where they transfer from pokey oaks (jr high) to peach creek jr high and they initially have beef with the eds (buttercup and eddy would be the main ones at odds, and blossom and edd would also be at odds to try and one-up each other at academics and be the #1 teachers pet. ed and bubbles would probably get along just fine) the puffs are instantly loved bcs of their super powers and they’re basically already popular once they arrive to pc jr high since they’re literally superheroes and they save people all across the globe and their heroic deeds aren’t limited to townsville, so pretty much everyone knows them. man if only i knew how to write
buttercup would be buds with kev and rolf, blossom’s with nazz, and bubbles is friends with sarah and jimmy (and she also rlly likes jonny, but jonny has a crush on buttercup. he likes her hotheaded nature)

Tumblr media
We all know Mike Believe, right? In his debut (and only) episode, "Imaginary Fiend", he created an imaginary friend named Patches that caused trouble at Pokey Oaks. Patches was only defeated because the Powerpuff Girls created an imaginary friend of their own to fight him.
Question #1, how did the Powerpuff Girls create their imaginary rabbit friend?
Simple...they didn't. Their friend only existed because Mike BELIEVED it. I headcanon that Mike has the ability to will things into existence, and he just isn't/wasn't aware of it yet. He believed that the girls could create an imaginary friend and stop Patches, so they did. If we take this a step further, Patches could've been created as a result of Mike's intrusive thoughts (which can be caused by stress and anxiety, and as a five year old with no friends in a new school, I'd imagine he'd have those in spades) which was why Patches was so violent and defiant in the first place.
And if we take another step forward:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This could explain why these three characters (and the unseen Tooth Fairy in "Moral Decay") exist within the PPG universe. Sure, "Imaginary Fiends" aired after "Dream Scheme" and "Boogie Frights", but who said all of the episodes aired in the order of which they occured? What if Mike was already living in Townsville and just attended a different school at the time?
And you might also ask yourselves, why does Mike just randomly have superpowers?
Newsflash! Plenty of characters exist in the PPG-sphere that have superpowers without any Chemical X:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Funny how they all have the same color scheme, might mess around and headcanon that they're all related, idk 😏😉
Idk, I just think this could really make Mike a more interesting character.

30 Years Of Meat Fuzzy Lumpkins (MY THOUGHTS)
It's so unbelievable how this is 30-years old 😲 It sure as hell doesn't feel 30! And all the other World Premiere Toons (Yuckie Duck, Sledgehammer O Possum, Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Hard Luck Duck, and Cow and Chicken: No Smoking) will be three whole decades as well! Let's gloss over how much the girls have changed since their first TV appearance in 1995 to now.
Tumblr media
The pilot episode starts off at the Townsville Mall (which also showed up in Aqua Teen Hunger Force for some reason), and there is a jam-tasting contest being held, with Fuzzy Lumpkins being one of the contestants. He is very hopeful that his "world famous" meat jam will win. The Powerpuff Girls crash through the ceiling of the mall, introducing themselves as they land on the stage to test the various jams at the contest. They declare Jar A (the grape jam) to be the winner, which pisses Fuzzy off to no end. His anger outburst is still far more composed compared to the final show though 🤣 He invents a meat ray gun and wreaks havoc on the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, at Pokey Oaks, the kids are enjoying a normal afternoon socializing and playing when suddenly, the hotline rings. A prototype version of Ms. Keane answers it and says it's for Blossom, who is jump roping with some other girls. Blossom helps out by putting Ms. Keane in place of herself in order to answer the phone (she does this in an overly dramatic way). The mayor informs her that the city is turning into meat, which shocks her greatly. The girls are about to take off when Ms. Keane sternly reminds them about asking permission to "save the world". They fly through the roof of the building, much to her chagrin. Judging by the tone of Ms. Keane's voice, it's implied they've done this many times in the past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The girls fly into the scene of the crime, where they find the townsfolk witnessing their city turned into a meat stew. And somehow within seconds, they've managed to rebuild the entire city.... using cardboard with crayon drawings resembling windows and doors. It's very obvious judging by the tape holding the cardboard together. Blossom and Buttercup interview the citizens, asking if either The Bologna Brothers, All-Beef Patty, or The Salami Swami (who actually did appear in the show proper), to which they reply no. A prototype Talking Dog cracks a witty punchline, which gives Blossom an idea. Before they take off though, Blossom and Buttercup have to pull Bubbles away from drawing on the cardboard walls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The girls arrive at the Townsville Mall, where Fuzzy is about to turn the building into a slab of steak. Typical shenanigans ensue, and one of Bubbles' pigtails gets turned into a chicken wing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She goes absolutely H A M
Tumblr media
Predating "Bubblevicious" by roughly 4 years, an enraged Bubbles beats the living shit out of Fuzzy. She punches him, bites his leg, and even trips him before ultimately shooting him with his own meat ray gun, thus turning him into hamburger. Blossom and Buttercup are shocked by this, not expecting their normally gentle sister to be so violent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Mayor (who is still a slab of steak) thanks the girls for their hard work and everyone celebrates with a barbeque. The day is saved for the very first time thanks to The Powerpuff Girls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that concludes one of the World Premiere Toons! Along with Pat Ventura's cartoons and No Smoking, this has to be one of my favorite pilots of What A Cartoon. Unlike some cartoon pilots that are still trying to figure out their identity, it already knows what it wants to be. Right off the bat, it shows the girls at kindergarten, emphasizing their young age and the juxtaposition it comes with them being superheroes. Not all cartoons figure out their identities this early, but PPG managed to do that. Craig McCracken even specifically mentioned in interviews promoting World Premiere Toons that the girls were "5-year old kindergarten-age superheroes who fly around and beat up bad guys". Again, he knew what story he wanted to tell (and he succeeded).
Differences Between The Pilot And The Final Series:
The girls are noticeably taller and lankier in this pilot, even compared to the second pilot, "Crime 101". Their heads are proportionate with the rest of their bodies, unlike later designs where they're literally tiny bobbleheads. Blossom's bow was skinnier and looked more like a boomerang than an actual bow. And their eyes in general aren't nearly as humungous as they'd later become. They almost resemble their Whoopass Stew counterparts to an extent.
The art style in general is different compared to the final series. The lines are somewhat thinner, the color palette is bolder, and everyone in general just seem to have a "noodly" look to them. Ms. Keane, in particular, has lanky proportions and overlapping eyes, looking more like she was drawn by Jim Davis. The background characters in general look like they came from Two Stupid Dogs, which makes sense because Craig McCracken was the art director for the show.
The backgrounds have less of an UPA influence and (in my opinion) look like backgrounds you'd see in old Nelvana shows (like Beetlejuice, for example). IDK how else to describe it other than it doesn't have quite have that UPA influence like the final series does. Look at the Pokey Oaks Kindergarten building, for example. The final series has kinda a cardboard cutout UPA style, while the pilot has more detailed and shaded backgrounds. The overall structure of the backgrounds are relatively similar though; you still have that curved sidewalk, that little building in the back, and the brick color being magenta/pinkish. Both have the same signage indicating that it's in fact, Pokey Oaks Kindergarten.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Mayor is significantly different compared to the final series. In the pilot, he is depicted as a squarish man with white hair dressed in a simple blue tuxedo. He kinda resembled a 1970s game show host (like Bob Barker). The Mayor in the final series, however, looks as if he was related to the Monopoly guy. His outfit has more detail too (sash, striped pants, monocle, mustache, and top hat). And to be perfectly honest, The Mayor in the pilot seems far more competent than the one we'd eventually get in the final series. I mean, The Mayor in the final series did start out rather competent too, but then he regressed into a toddler come Season 5. In general, pilot Mayor seems less goofy and scatterbrained..... and more neurotic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of personalities, let's talk about Fuzzy; in the pilot, he's a rather intelligent hillbilly with a knack for inventing and creating things (think of an anti Professor Utonium). He's also less afraid to fit it with society, even entering himself into a jam tasting contest. In the final series, however, he's an easily enraged recluse who sees everything as a threat. Pilot Fuzzy is lightyears more calm than final series Fuzzy 🤣 If Fuzzy were to lose in the final series, he'd literally go ham, destroying the entire mall while screaming like a toddler throwing a tantrum.
Buttercup, while still a tough tomboy, is less talkative here. She only gets a few lines in comparison to her sisters. Craig McCracken even described her as "quiet".
The girls in general still have the same personalities, but Bubbles seemed to have a bit of a vain streak compared to the final series. She was never narcissistic though.... just cared a lot about her appearance. She's also voiced by Kath Soucie as opposed to Tara Strong, which is why she sounds like Lil from Rugrats. It is unknown why Kath was replaced with Tara in the final series.... perhaps it was because she was too preoccupied with other roles at the time? She was everywhere in the 1990s. Oh, and Ms. Keane is voiced by Kath Soucie as well. Blossom, Buttercup, and Fuzzy Lumpkins still have the same voice actors as they always did.
The Powerpuff Hotline is just a generic green phone in this. It is also a generic phone in the first produced episode too (Insect Inside); it isn't until Mommy Fearest that it looks like the Chatter Phone parody it's known for today.
The episode length is 7 minutes rather than 10-11 minutes. I think it's good they went with the latter format in the final series because there'd be more time to tell stories and solve conflicts.
These are all the differences I spotted between this pilot and the final series! Let me know if there are more differences you can spot 😉 And I'm gonna say it again, but this is one of the best World Premiere Toons.... hands down.
Here is a rare promo with brief interviews promoting the premiere of the pilot 30 years ago
youtube
There are more commercials and even newspaper articles promoting World Premiere Toons as well.... but I'm not going to post them here since I already have enough pictures. Also, in the video above, Craig McCracken basically confirms that the girls are indeed 5-years old, so you don't have to worry about asking how old they are 😉 He already knew what he was doing, and it was still years before the show proper officially premiered. Oddly enough, there's a commercial that refers to them as "first graders" even though they're clearly kindergarteners 🤷‍♀️ The sign in front of their school literally says that.
Now it's only a matter of time before Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, and Yuckie Duck-
Holy crap.... I feel old 😳
