3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? [ How to Grieve in Nowhere County ] is near and dear to my heart. i feel like it's the best justice i could give kumatora as a character, after everything mother 3's writing left to be desired with her. it's also pretty personal - i was not-so-secretly pouring a lot of love for my own mom into this fic. the low numbers are fair and expected. 'cause for one it's a niche AU character study about a female character. and for two, nowhere county is definitely the densest my writing has gotten. it ain't a light read. the prose is jungly as hell & probably often hard to parse (intended to drive home kuma's tangled mess of grief, confusion, and dark thoughts. and the delirious resurfacing of lucas' trauma by extension. and the general funk & fog of being a teenager going through Some Heavy Shit!!). bigly one of those "i wrote this for me, but you can read it if you'd like" kinda fics. this one was cooking in my head since like early 2021. when i finally got around to writing it this spring, it was a really cathartic process, and i was beyond satisfied with the end result. peace and love on planet bear tiger.

Just finished watching Pokemon: Secrets of the Jungle. How is this a Pokemon movie

It's really good?? And it's a POKEMON MOVIE???

The problem isn't that it's the franchise, like ew, a Pokemon movie??? No, the thing is, usually they're just. Cookie-cutter movies with plots that blend into each other that were obviously made for a "quick" cash-grab.

It's not the case here.

This was the most unhinged, off-the-shits Pokemon movie ever released. It was amazing.

Go watch it if you haven't. If you have, go watch it again. Please. For Dada

Just sitting here, wishing they'd bring back the Pokemon movies. We only ever got the Zarude movie in Gen8 on account of the pandemic and that's definitely completely understandable, but I miss the movies, and the more detailed animations, the more stunning settings, and the occasional look at a new Pokemon they had.

(I wonder tho, if we got a new movie, if they would use the AU Ash like we'd gotten for the Gen7 movies/Zarude film, or, now that they've retired Ash from the main anime, if we'd get a Horizons movie instead?)

[Koko (Secrets of the Jungle) Review]

I did make a twitter thread about the Koko (Secrets of the Jungle) movie after seeing it, so I'll carry it over here, with some editing (because I had to shorten things there for twitter's character limit.) ^^ Naturally, beware of spoilers for the movie!

“Can you hear them? All the footsteps Can you hear them? All the voices Raise your voices We're all the blood of the forest!” Secrets of the Jungle was a fantastic movie, beautiful, poignant, and with a heartwarming ending after the peril and tearjerker scenes.

Coco is a very endearing feral child raised by a Zarude outcast, who never knew his own father, so encounters difficulty raising him... The ape-like Zarude’s rules and hierarchy show a social complexity that leads to an arrogance and similar imbalance in nature as caused by greedier humans, which is even stated outright when they realize their mistakes!

The good and evil sides of humanity are shown—feral child Coco naturally arrives at the human concept of agriculture and he altruistically bonds with and rescues different Pokemon, not only his kind (thanklessly! ... so unlike a symbiotic relationship where both benefit or a parasitic relationship where one benefits at the expense of the other, Coco altruistically benefits other species without gaining anything from the venture--human toddlers exhibit this trait more than primates of similar developmental age)… Ash introduces Coco to good things, like clothes and ice cream… while the villain exhibits evil aspects like greed and arrogance.

Ice cream is totally one of the peaks of human innovation and civilization (especially if you're ten years old), what do you mean?

Coco’s human parents were kind and principled. Most working under Zed were weak-willed, following orders, even as it became clear the leader of the project was cruel, but Coco’s parents halting the project for the sake of protecting the Zarude indirectly led to a Zarude caring for their newly orphaned son.

Koko's father, Chrom, reminds me a lot of Alan, both in appearance and motivation to protect others at the cost of himself...

Doctors Rin and Chrom making the ultimate sacrifice and hoping their baby would be safe... Zed saw their vehicle erupting in flames, after running them off the road, with Chrom and Rin too injured to move, awaiting certain death, and... left the new parents and their baby to die.

The feral child himself, Coco, is a very endearing and compelling character! His relationship with the Zarude who raised him (who was an orphan himself and often questions if he could ever be a father without ever having one himself) is very moving…

The English dub is INCREDIBLE. The Zarude’s voices suit them, they’re deep and have a guttural quality that suits the Pokemon, but doesn’t sound unnatural or cartoonish. I was so impressed by everyone’s voices! Not a single bad voice in sight for all the major characters!

I'm usually someone who only really likes to watch the original version, but I didn't feel at all that I was missing out, watching the dub here.

I love how disturbed the (compassionate, almost antivillain) Rocket trio is by Zed’s ranting. You can see his sanity slipping, he even thinks it’s a good idea to say these horribly incriminating things about how he could lead the project better, how he just has to be rid of them! His motivations might have been somewhat noble (to use the healing spring to help human beings), but he completely ignored the plight of the Pokemon relying on it and his execution was completely evil (murdering the researchers trying to halt the project and leaving their infant son to die, either by burning or starvation...)

I love the tilted camera angle and the way he knocks his drink over and sways, it accentuates how unhinged he is as he decides to murder Coco’s parents. (I wonder if it's also to suggest he was intoxicated when he made the decision to run them off? ... in case we wanted to add more charges here.)

I’m harsh on Yajima for XY, but I adore his films—they’re a breath of fresh air and Tomioka’s wonderful at writing relationships, as always.

It's creepy when Zed recognizes who Koko is, but Koko doesn't recognize him, so he's not aware of the danger he's in in that scene... but it's so sad that after AU Satoshi talks with Koko about his father (and man, this scene kind of hurts more after seeing That Distant Blue Sky, because this AU Satoshi does have at least some warm memories of his dad, and the man still couldn't wait a few hours to see his son who only had like 1~2 day's notice of his visit and Satoshi took a detour on his journey to meet him and... still didn't get to see him... after everything else that happened, no wonder he cried!!!)... only for them to learn Koko's human parents are long dead.

Koko hardly understands human language, but from seeing everyone's faces and hearing everyone's tones, he realizes there's no good news. He looks so numb and disappointed, it's heartbreaking.

Other lovely things Satoshi introduced him to: fireworks, although, naturally, Koko's quite scared of the sudden sounds and such at first, being raised in the jungle, where he had to watch out for predators, presumably. ^^;

He sees their beauty eventually, though. ^^

Koko's combined human nature (his altruism and his researcher parents' dedication to protecting the Zarude's habitat) and his Pokemon nature (he ends up being able to use the healing spring and even using a Pokemon attack--Jungle Healing- only Zarude normally can to save his adoptive Zarude father!!! ... I don't know if it's because the Zarude rubbed off of on him, or if whatever healing properties the spring and forest had responded to him as it would to one of the Zarude, but it was very unique) saves the day, after Zarude took a (would-have-been!) fatal blow...

I would've loved for Koko to join AU Satoshi on his future journey or journeys, but it seems Koko's made the decision to explore the world on his own.

Gabriela in her Pokémon performer outfit of her formerly Pokémon Gardevoir as she was once performed by the name Briella by her fans before she decided to retire from performing and give Gardevoir to her best friend Clara after she found out she’s expecting her first child at the age of 20. Gabriela and her family unfortunately got into a car accident when she got into labor while the birth was assisted by one of the Zarude but after Sera’s birth, she gave Lucario her necklace, and when Lucario promised her that he'll raise and protect Sera from Zed soon after her passing the Zarude buried her corpse near their home as a memorial so that her daughter and Lucario would visit someday.
