also do some dancing if you hold the taunt button for a while! I dunno the exact name of it, but i've seen these funny animations of uma musume gals dancing like that (turns out it was the kumaru dance) and i wanted iono to do it too

i also love to see how dot's identity as gurumin continues to integrate in with her general everyday identity and confidence... a while back i made a whole post rambling about the potential of dot's battle style as a more experienced pokemon trainer in the future being very performative, and it was a very likodot heavy post LOL, but taking away the shipping and dramatic aspects for a bit, i do genuinely see that as a route for her character, so i was practically cheering when she turned her battle with onyx into a performance. dot loves to perform and has skill in it when her reclusive tendencies aren't holding her back. gurumin has typically been used to channel that aspect of her, but now it's coming out without the need for the gurumin suit.

i thought this scene had really great contrast with HZ049 when she was dealing with the horrors of being caught on camera - of course it's not an exact comparison, she isn't surrounded by cameras here, but there's an incredible visual contrast of her being anxious surrounded by a crowd, to now actually wanting there to be a crowd that she can perform for, and therefore bring people into the restaurant with.

she stutters for a moment because she isn't used to doing this as her normal self at all, but she's also able to project her voice at the end and be the one to lead the crowd she's caught the attention of into the restaurant, which is just like. Insane for her. wow! i cannot even begin to express how happy this made me jisodfjoifds (and as an aside, even the cute name she gave the udon feels like something a youtuber would come up with. she's good at titling things)

and let us not forget on this topic that she brings up livestreaming, willingly in conversation -

first off, dot isn't usually one to bring this up on her own, especially to strangers... which makes sense because it's a secret identity, but she also has historically refused to take pride in her accomplishments and what she's good at, so seeing her talk about it here not only represents once again, integration of gurumin into her general identity, but also a willingness to acknowledge her livestreams as a skill she has that gave her the performance skills to do what she did with the restaurant. which is really notable character growth imo

^ she still shrugs off compliments like she's been shown to do before. however. take a look at the contrast between her doing this in HZ041...

like, the difference in tone and expression here is obvious. she may be denying praise for her abilities and underestimating herself with her words, but she is so much more willing to be happy about it and essentially accept those compliments with her demeanor, even with strangers (of which friede was to her at the time as well!)

HZ050 showed a lot of that confident trainer dot with her hair pulled back by the headband integrating with dot's whole self, but this episode really showed her performative side as gurumin integrating in there too, and i think that's wonderful. dot doesn't need to hide behind a mask to be a talented person and entertain people!

Really liking what they're doing so far with the basics and implementation tests with Liko and the others and how each test and Gym Leader they are facing pertains to their specific arcs as characters.

Liko's battles so far having her learn to enjoy the moment (VS Kaede, who is someone who holds back on some level just like Liko does) and allowing herself to go all out and using battles as a way to connect with her Pokemon's emotions which is her goal as a trainer (VS Chili). So her battles are more on the emotional side and deal with passion, which fits her development (especially since she is learning to find things she can be passionate about). Her test against Grusha will presumably deal with that too, since as far as I know, Grusha was passionate about snowboarding and eventually had to retire (in the games, at least), so we'll see how the anime chooses to use his character. He made a comment to Liko after seeing her battle against Chili in HZ056 ("if that's enough to raise your spirits, you must be pretty frigid"), which makes me think their battle could deal with "passion" in general.

Roy is learning to be more observant in general through his battles so far, and he is improving on the technical side of things. He realized that moves could be added to one another, and that battles could be made together with his opponent. Him facing artists of all kinds (Colza, Hassaku and eventually Ryme) also shows that he is learning to perfect his craft as a trainer and taking his time instead of rushing in. (Also, I like that it's specifically Roy who faces the trainers who are artists. You'd think that maybe since Liko likes drawing and has an affinity with art, she'd be more connected to these characters, but it's Roy who is involved with them and it fits really well with his arc.)

With Dot, I like that she is feeling frustration for different reasons during her battles so far. She was frustrated that she lost against Nanjamo in HZ050 but admits that she had fun. She was frustrated that she won against Poppy in HZ055 because she felt like her victory wasn't truly hers and that she couldn't have done anything by herself. And it looked like she was a bit frustrated after her battle against Aoki in HZ059 because she felt she was close to potentially defeating one of his Pokemon. I feel like she is starting to want to win too. Makes sense that she is going through these stages of frustration which will push her to want to improve as a trainer since she only came out of her room to travel outside in this chapter. Liko and Roy went through similar stages before too (Liko was frustrated at not being able to defeat Amethio in HZ007, and Roy felt something similar too when Rayquaza wouldn't look his way back in HZ033 for example, and both times it motivated them to grow stronger).

Also, I was kind of wondering why Dot was made to face Aoki for her implementation test at first, but I like the contrast with him and Nanjamo. Nanjamo is a streamer so she is someone who draws attention to herself and likes standing out, while Aoki is the complete opposite of that and takes pride in not standing out and being a regular person. So this kind of fits Dot in different ways.

Ooh, Dogasu's Backpack is a Pokemon fansite that has been around for years, and looks like the guy running the site wants to start doing summaries for the four different Pokemon manga running in Ichiban. I'm honestly not all that interested in the ones outside of Spe, but if you are, go on ahead!

He's gonna short do Coronis-style summaries (while also using the original Japanese terminology), and since I'm impatient, I'm more than happy with what we get! Here's the one for this month! :[x]

The battle between Scarlet and Nanjamo continues! The Gym Leader uses her Mumage's Ghost Dive to KO Scarlet's Gurenarma and then its Confuse Ray to cause her Nyarote to KO itself, but Scarlet turns things around when her Pikachu uses a combination of Play Nice and Thief to knock out Mumage before it even has a chance to Terastallize! Meanwhile, Violet and Peper are traveling through the Roast Desert when they hear that the Star-Dan's Team Schedar is looking to recruit Violet as a bodyguard! Peper is worried this will sidetrack their hunt for the next Special Spice so Violet leaves Peper behind to search the area himself while he runs off to see about Team Schedar. Back in Hakkou City, Scarlet drops in on a secret late night meeting being held by Omodaka, Chili, and Raifor. She pulls Raifor aside and learns that she was the one who requested she look into the "Calamitous Pokémon," with Raifor explaining her goal is to eventually capture the Pokémon to prevent them falling into the wrong hands. Scarlet accepts, on the condition they admit a good friend of hers into the academy. Raifor adds that a Pokémon known as "Iron Serpent" seems to be the key to unsealing the Calamitous Pokémon and suggests Scarlet find and meet up with Violet, the boy who showed up at the school orientation ceremony with a Miraidon. Just then, Scarlet gets a call from Team Schedar...it seems like they're considering Scarlet to be their new bodyguard...?

i just watched HZ013-HZ016 with my 63 year old mom. update on her opinions:

- iono/nanjamo is “creepy” and “scary” because of her face/sharp teeth (i don’t think my mom has seen a shark teeth anime girl before. she’s weirded out by most unusual anime character designs LOL)

- SHE LIKES DOT YAYY. we had a funny moment when dot was running and collapsed from exhaustion where my mom laughed, i said “she’s just like me for real” and then my mom laughed again in agreement bc she knows me so well. i’m a twig that can’t run

- her fav character is friede because “he’s cool and has a charizard”. and she’s so right

seeing how my mom, who isn’t a pokemon fan and is also boomer aged, reacts to and enjoys horizons is some of the most entertainment i’ve had all year. it’s so fun and i’m happy she’s watching it with me LOL
