Day 127: Artstyle challenge

Wanted to challenge myself by drawing teki in the styles of four of my favourite games (and also omori bc it has a pretty iconic style) not all of them are great replicas but I did have fun with it

Did a whiteboard with some friends this morning, ended up mostly drawing randomly selected characters from memory, made for some okay warm up drawings-

Attempted a palette challenge, blocked out the colors dark to light and wrote pokemon names beside each of em, then flipped the screen to greyscale to do the actual art. End result was a bit surprising, kinda wanna go back and draw a normal color version of this squad now!

My friends and I did a “draw this randomly selected pokemon from memory in a short space of time” thing and these are my results.

Highlights include whatever happened to poor lopunny. I remember exactly two (2) things about necrozma and that’s claws? and black. Both me and my friend heard staravia and thought “ah yes, staraptor” and onix is (to quote my friends) my “biblically unsettling” son and I love him

This might be insensitive and corny so I might delete it later but also considering art and pokemon has shaped the most important parts of who I am, I think it's worth sharing it anyway.

We like to make memes of 10 year old kids going on a journey and beating large group of bad guys, saving the world and all that. For me, I think it's both inspiring imaginative-wise yet pensively reflective of the world on how the younger generations are burdened with loads of issues deposited from the older generations/government corruption, but are agents capable of change as well as active participants in civil endeavors.

I'm using pokemon as an example but any other media can said the same. Beyond some entertainment media, it is a way of connecting with people and engage with creativity, ideas and critical thinking. II think that more than ever, it is important to create, bond with people over shared interests to keep yourselves engaged in many meaningful ways, provide support and sustain your mental health. It's important to spread love and staying true to your self. I hope that my art evokes not just inspiration but deeper thoughts, new ideas, challenging views, hope and new connections.

In other words, stay curious. Accept and challenge new ideas. Make and appreciate friendships. Use those good memories and ideas you learned from experience and apply to real life. Be kind (though of course its important to set boundaries)

Things you should know:

I have low to severe functioning autism. Meaning I need help from those outside of my own self. Basically help with my day to day life and for scary situations such as talking to strangers IRL. Or complex decisions such as bank details or that kinda thing. I need others to help me!

That doesn't mean I'm not smart though. I'm mostly slow. I call it rebooting. So if I ever take a while to respond it's probably because I'm thinking about what to say!

I have bipolar disorder. I deal mostly with mood swings one minute ranting about how cute my cat is the next minute crying over how cute my cat is.

I deal with a lot of doctors! Two or more appointments a week! So if I tell you multiple times over a short span of time I can't talk cause I'm going to the doctor's it's not an overused excuse! It's true!

I have severe anxiety. Meaning any communication at all stresses me out. But I still really wanna try to socialize!

I have memory issues.

So if you wanna talk I'm welcome to it. I'm just really, really, shy. And sometimes I'll panic and end conversations out of nowhere. So if you ever wanna talk all I ask is to be understanding and a lil patient.

And if you talk to me long enough I'll grow to trust you! Which means I'll feel more comfortable and calm when talking to you!

About my art:

I love art! But it's hard to do since I have some physical problems. But I do it anyway! I mainly draw things I like or request / challenges I receive. I like to draw my little persona alot because he's simple and easy to draw. I also have a lot of OC's! Ask me about them! I love them all and will be over the moon to share their stories outside of just the art I make of them!

Text posts are semi common. It's mostly little ramblings or rants. Or just how I'm feeling. But again I mostly posts art.

Any anime really even if I haven't seen it! I have watched a bit of or completed, Naruto, one piece, jujutsu keisen, Ouran host club, black clover, sword art online, attack on Titan, Yuri on ice, one punch man, my hero academia, assassination classroom, food wars, pokemon, the promised Neverland. And a bit more I'm probably forgetting.

Video games!

Any video game really! Even if I haven't played it! But I have played or watched others play: stardew valley, undertale, Minecraft, Roblox, terraria, cult of the lamb, overwatch 2, dead by daylight, Skyrim, halo, rocket League, cod black ops 2 zombies, moonlighter, hollow night, sky children of the light, don't starve together, subnautica, subnautica below zero, alot of different Pokemon games, five nights at Freddy's, astroneer, monster hunters, and one of my absolute all time favorites SLIME RANCHER!

@mysteryposter ‘s pokemon art challenge looked fun so here we go

First starter: have both Charmander and Turtwig because I chose Charmander on someone elses game before i got my own pokemon game.

Pokemon from fav region: love gen 5 and had to draw one of my favs

Favorite shiny: I love the fluffy moth and when i found out its shiny was yellow i just had to get one. 

Shiny you wish was better: Iv’e seen others draw Leafeon with a more autumn color scheme or a sakura tree it really make me wish the shiny was like that instead of looking almost exactly the same.

Randomly generated pokemon: Cufant ^v^

Draw and legendary/mythical: I like a good bit of legends Reshiram is the one I always think of. Raiko, Lugia, Shaymin being other favs.

A pokemon of your fav type: I like both fighting and grass so I picked Breloom.

Very first favorite: tried to remember who it was before Sawk and all i could think of was Lucario for all the memories i had with it and Luxray (i remember looking in my PC on either Diamond or Platinum and there was like 4 Luxrays in the same box)

Current fav: Sawk has been a old Fav. little me saw how silly and cool Stephan’s Sawk was so i caught myself one, eventually i started drawing em which at the time I hated drawing anything human like because i sucked at it, so in a way he got me out of my comfort zone and really pushed me to get better at drawing bipedal characters.

Check-in for 01/28/24

It's been a while since I did one of these. Time to remedy that!

I've been doing well in my assignments, but due to some registration issues at the start of the semester I was unable to sign up for any web development or programming classes :< It's nice to take a break, but I'm really worried about getting stagnant in those skills, and maybe even losing what I've learned over time.

This is where a couple of new projects come in: A blorbo database and a tool for drawing pokemon from memory. These things are going to keep me avoid stagnancy and help me develop my web dev and Python programming skills, and I'm real excited to talk about them.

First up, let's talk about that tool for drawing pokemon from memory. I love drawing pokemon from memory, but it's a bit of a struggle to find tools online that work well for a solo experience when you're doing this challenge alone. So I made a program in PyGame to solve this problem, and I've actually already completed it! It was a great learning experience when it came to getting a taste of APIs, and PokeAPI really helped me do all the heavy lifting with it. I also ended up using ChatGPT to help me understand how to phrase my questions and the things I needed to research. This is the end result:

If you click "Get Random Pokemon", the program will provide a pokemon's name. The point of it is to draw the pokemon as best as you remember it, and then click "Show Pokemon Image" to see how you did. You will then have the option to get a new random pokemon, which clears the image from the window.

There's a lot of stuff I don't understand about how the program works--- APIs evade my understanding, and Tkinter is a dark art beyond my comprehension. But I was able to make a program that solved a genuine problem for me for the first time, and that's super exciting to me!

Now, for web development--- long story short, I'm making a website dedicated to cataloguing my OCs that's very much inspired by tumblr user @snekkerdoodles's personal site on neocities, which I regularly stare at in an effort to motivate myself to make cool things like it (everyone reading this should check his page out IMMEDIATELY and tell him how cool it is). Here's the screenshots of the WIP I'm chipping away at right now:

I don't have much to say about it, as the interesting stuff will really be the content of the pages, and I still have yet to finish the template page I'll be filling with my OCs' information. However, I can say that I'm very upset with the lack of proper teaching that took place in the first (and currently only) college web dev class I've taken. I spent an entire semester doing my own research to learn everything they were supposed to be teaching us. I'm still very peeved about that.

To summarize this very rambling post I'm too sleepy to edit properly, I'm making a digital blorbo encyclopedia, and I finished making a little desktop app thingy, which means I need to summon a new programming project. I'm tempted to make it a video game... maybe I should turn back to that visual novel idea I had ages ago and boot up RenPy!

Who says your job cannot be also your hobby? Creating new strategies with your pokemons surely counts as the hobby - and it's more fun when you have such a great students as your team!

My close friend once said: "Brightest smiles hide the saddest tears". Everyone wants to be happy, but sometimes emotions are too much to handle than you can, even if you're still smiling and saying "I'm fine"

thinkin about the time last month me and youknowwhoyouare :) binged pokemon horizons together. we started like, july 10th? and we got all the way caught up to episode 58.. and, god. it was so great. i took notes during tons of episodes because... i just, i really wanted to be able to have something to look back at and further cherish the wonderful memories. like honestly apparently for a lot of people, it took them until the (well, spoilers for general plot structure after the read more, but ill still be vague)

apparently it took a lot of people until they got into the training arc in paldea to really really be interested? but honestly.. i mean okay, maybe this was boosted from being able to binge it and excitedly get more questions and answers from the next episodes but like i REALLY loved the middle area so far of the episodes. the ones that revolved around lucius, the rising volt-tacklers' backstories and overcoming troubles in their lives... and like the stuff involving terapagos ofc. i love that silly goober. like, god i am REALLY invested in liko, roy, and dot. and friede!! is so cool!! too!! and!! terapagos god! and the villains!! the explorers are awesome. i really like amethio as a character i think dot is one of my fav characters, but ive gotta say friede is just. so cool. and i loved mollys episode...

but just like, thinking back overall? i loved all of the episodes. out of all 59 we watched, i'd say maybe only like. 3? were kinda "mid" ? but like god i personally care a lot more for seeing non-direct-training character growth, and mystery solving... more than training arcs. when it came about, my reaction was "ah, right. they've gotta get to doing this eventually, lol"

ive enjoyed how they've baked in the life lessons and character growth into the challenges, especially with dot. and they've still sprinkled in some good mystery stuff relating to terapagos and the villains... and like, i also really loved the arts n crafts part around that roy vs brassius episode! but some of my fav episodes were just, the random slice of life ones with sudden mysteries! anyways, i love all of the arcs, really. i have a lot of appreciation for mysteries that we havent even seen explored in the games at all, though, heh. it is indeed exciting to be in paldea. something interesting has gotta happen involving terapagos soon... im wondering what the pacing of the remaining of the six heroes is gonna be like, though
