To Look Upon The Future - Cover Art

Wrapped In Light, Before The Scar... And When Scarred

Well here it is, the thing that I've been wanting to come back to for an awful long while. To Look Upon The Future finally has some cover art and I draw again! I've been meaning to get back into drawing for a while so I'm glad to finally get this out into the world. Whilst it's definitely not the most exciting art or anything like that and due to my inexperience in digital art still (I hate using a mouse to draw DX), at least I've managed to ensure I met this in time for PSMD's 8th anniversary here in Europe. On this day (the 19th or the 20th), it released in PAL regions and slowly became one of - and still is - my favourite Mystery Dungeon title of all time. Slowly but surely I'll start making my way back to my fanfiction that I've got for this series, which you can find here and two other one-shots I've written in the past:

What Partner Pokémon I think each Stardew Valley Bachelor/ette would have

I had so much fun making my cooking for the bachelors posts, that I couldn’t help but combine Stardew valley with another thing I absolutely love, Pokémon! I have been playing Pokémon since I was 8-9 and I’ve been enamored ever since.

!First Things First! Just like last time I’ll be going based off the vibes of our contestants, as with my last post this isn’t about favorites or dislikes, there will be bias on this because, like before, it’s my post you silly goose! Feel free to share what you think each person would have in the comments! Without further ado

Abigail: The resident goth of Pelican Town would seem easy at first glance, and while the gothita line appeals to me in theory, I happen to love making things difficult for myself, so I’ll go with the less obvious choice of Mismageous! Mismageous fits Abigail’s vibes well on its own, but if you factor in the theory that Abigail is The Wizards daughter, the witch Pokémon starts to feel a little more appropriate

Alex: Again there is the obvious choice of Machamp, but I think not only is that too obvious, but I also think there’s a better answer, one that fits Alex more, Riolu. The reason I have is simple, discipline. Riolu trains so hard to get better, master the power of its aura, and Alex does the same. He trains daily with push ups and working out, clearly trying to outdo himself every single day. That’s the type of discipline Riolu would want in a trainer.

Elliott: The most recent applicant of the Tortured Poets Department needs a pal that fits his constant state of the dramatic. Oshawatt in the anime is shown to a big dramatic baby, and the best part, Elliott lives at the beach, this duo of Shakespearian sea dwellers would pair like Peanut Butter & Jelly.

Emily: If you saw my last post you know Emily is the only person I’ve romanced so far, and while that remains true, last time I made a post like this I was confident in my choice for her, this time I don’t feel the same confidence. I couldn’t find any bird Pokémon that fit her energy, and short of copy pasting my favorite Pokémon (Chikorita), I couldn’t think of too much. My final verdict was Meditite. The easy way out sometimes is the only way out, and to this levitating little lad I concede defeat. They’re perfect, meditating together in perfect harmony.

Haley: As I said last time, Haley is growing on me, and with that in mind, I had to think how she’d think. What better partner, than a model for her photography. For Haley I chose, not Milotic, but instead Flebebe. The queen of the flower festival along with the flower fairy could absolutely pair so well together, and come on, think of the photos!

Harvey: Don’t say Chansey..don’t say Chansey..don’t say…oh whatever. Chansey just fits too well. Harvey is an awkward yet caring and healing nerd. Chansey is a caring healer. If Yoba didn’t want PB&J sandwiches, he shouldn’t have made them pair so well.

Leah: The artist of Pelican Town seems to go under the radar, at least in my play throughs, but I promise soon I’ll change that! While I could go Smeargle I still feel dirty about Harvey’s Pokémon, so I need to think outside the box, and I think Ludicolo could work for two reasons, admittedly not great reasons. The first, his little hat could be used to hold things while Leah works on her newest project. The second and in my opinion more valid reason is that Ludicolo could help Leah remember to relax, and not stress about every single thing. Art is hard.

Maru: Some may say this is the easy way out, but I think it’s clever. Instead of a Pokémon like Klink or Magnemite, my choice for our inventor is Rotom. The little ghost possesses machines and helps them come to life, is there anything more Maru wants? Okay, maybe for her dad to not be right next to her every second of every day but Rotom could help with that too…⚡️⚡️⚡️

Penny: The literary love interest is another one that kind of stumps me, but I think I cracked the code. Munna is my pick for Penny because of its ability to eat and help Penny experience dreams, helping an imaginative character escape the life she’s stuck in could absolutely give Penny and Munna purpose.

Sam: There isn’t a wrong answer for Sam, but for the thrill ride lover, my pick would be Charizard because of two reasons. It can fly, and also, look at Sam and tell me he wouldn’t love a flaming dragon.

Sebastian: Left out, out of place, doesn’t feel like they fit in or that their voice matters, you thought of one of two things. Sebastian or Mimikyu. Together these two could help each other find their voice, or in theory be at least a little less lonely.

Shane: In my last post I admitted I don’t like Shane. I’m happy to admit that’s not completely the case anymore based off what I learned about him and Jas, but this post isn’t about my feelings toward the characters, y’all wouldn’t read that. (Would you?) this is about partner Pokémon, and for Shane I was stumped, until I remembered the main arc of Shane. He needs a purpose. What better purpose than a Purrloin. My original choice was Lillipup but Purrloin simply fit the vibes better

Hello! Welcome to the Pokémon Café! Made for Pokémon, by Pokémon! I'm your hostess with the mostess, Leah! And this is my partner and manager: Eevee! Come on down to Los Platos for an unforgettable experience! Oh, I suppose I should introduce you to the rest of my staff as well:

Sprigatito is our main entrée specialist. She's an eager little learner when it comes to new recipes. She takes from her mom, Meowscarada, who also helps in the kitchen from time to time. Sprigatito's kneading is helpful in making jello and choux pastries, as well as helping strawberries grow in our garden.

Fidough's yeast may be indeed useful when it comes to our baked goods, but that doesn't stop him from being our best and main drinks specialist. He likes mixing drinks and playing with the bubbles they make, and he adores the honey our Ribombee makes. He's also very helpful when it comes to wrapping our to-go orders in parchment paper.

Tinkaton's our expert when it comes to small plates. Her huge hammer makes for an excellent press for our sandwiches, as well as a nutcracker. She loves candy, and cracking open jars full of it whenever she's not on the clock.

Ogerpon's the sweetest member on staff, which more than qualifies her to be our main sweets specialist. She's still getting used to customers, but once she learns to trust you, she'll warm up to you like you're her favorite person in the whole world.

Last, but not least, Koraidon's our main delivery driver. He'll deliver your order to you in thirty minutes or less, no matter where in Paldea you are! He loves being tipped in pets and treats. He also helps in the kitchen from time to time, loves making jello, and spreading mayonnaise and butter on sandwiches. He's learned to love making them almost as much as eating them.

So come on down! We'd love to have you!

Favourite partner character?

I’m biased because I started with Super, so for me it’d be the PSMD partner, not just because of the story being centred around them and not just the hero, but also their story arc, theme and just all around goofiness heavily plays into how I can sorta see myself in them and how they behave. Super’s story resonates a lot with me in the early stages as it reminded me about my childhood growing up due to being Autistic and being alone, with barely anyone to really talk to cuz I thought of myself as weird. Fast forward a decade when I played the game as a teenager and I still feel the same way even now. PSMD partner holds a special place in my heart for that, as eventually you become friends with them in the game and you realise despite their troublesome personality, they have a good-natured heart, and so for that reason I feel they’re my personal fav in general.

Special shout-out to the Rescue Team and Explorers partners for being great in their own right even if I didn’t grow up with those games (minus the former in its remake), but a close second for my favourite partner is Gates. It’s a similar kind of nature with how they’re all alone and them meeting you finally gave them purpose in life, plus the ending imo is the best out of any PMD game. Partner’s message to the player as soon as they leave is such a gut punch and also playing as them in the post game and not coming back instantly after the credits? Oof, that’s a real double gut punch.

What do you ship in the games in general?

Future trio polyamory couple babbbbbyyyyy!! For real though, I ship Dusknoir x Grovyle for the sole purpose of special episode 5 (I really need to give that a rewatch), alongside Grovyle x Celebi as a close contender, but personal headcanon makes me ship these three goofballs because fellow folks on Tumblr have permanently altered my brain chemistry of how I see them, hellllllpppppp

For individual games though, I do ship Hero x Partner in Explorers, mainly due to how they personally grow throughout the course of the story, and even if PSMD is my personal favourite, I will contend that both Gates and Explorers have the stronger stories of all four mainline Mystery Dungeon games. :)

Emolga x Virizion is another obvious candidate for shipping purposes, and I absolutely love the teasing each of the other main characters have whenever Emolga blushes and is caught in the act andndjndfirndi XD Ampharos/Mawile, Wigglytuff/Chatot and even Hero/Gengar are a few others too due to the various natures of what can be explored, but for the most part I’m a friendship sort of guy who appreciates the extremely closely bonded tight knit characters trope! Those have a hold on me unlike any other 😭
