I'm glad you asked! See, as a coherent character, she's fine. I can at least fully understand what is going on with her and why. But as Lusamine? The anime is probably my least favorite iteration of her.

The problem with USUM was that it wanted to pivot, literally between scenes, from standard Lusamine to "Wait no she's doing this for well-intentioned reasons!" We literally get back to back scenes of "If you won't do as I say, then I have no children" to "I was doing all of this to protect this world and my children." The problem was the writers not caring to make coherent sense of her character, and backing out of engagement with what she was doing entirely. Which, to put it mildly, sucks.

As mentioned, the anime is coherent. Lusamine's character and motivations are clear, if watered down. They're playing very strongly to the Good Lusamine approach of USUM, but are going about it in a way that works for what they want. Lusamine is, in this iteration, much tamer. The big conflict is very...boring, stock standard, high profile job parent works too much and the kid is sad about it, mixed with a bit of "she's always treating me like a kid." So you get the sense of okay, there's tension with the family, but this is piss-easy to resolve. We get a couple notes showing she's fairly selfish and doesn't always consider other people, but framed as more...childish than cruel. "I liked it as Clefairy, and you evolved it when I wasn't home!" "Yeah, but it's cuter as Clefable and I was the one raising it." That kind of thing. Gladion tried to bitch her out about wanting to see an Ultra Beast, in spite of one being the cause of Lillie's trauma, but like...Gladion, I know you're like 13 and filled with angst, but there is a difference between "I would like to see this thing we've been studying in person" and "I am ignoring the trauma my child went through because of it." She's not suggesting showing it to Lillie. She just wants to see it. You're being dramatic.

But by now I hope the problem is obvious. This...isn't Lusamine.

Say what you will about USUM fucking up. I certainly do. But at least its presentation of Lusamine is still the bad bitch who runs the world. The anime tries to present a Lusamine who is completely ignorant of everything going on, who has no direct research experience of her own and relies on Burnet to study the beasts, is playful and childish and has like zero control over anyone, instead pleading with her kids to listen to her and when Faba steps out of line effectively just going "Faba, come on, stop." There's none of the poise, the confidence, the control that Lusamine is known for. It's like the only way they could think to really present her as not being evil was to make her infantile. The anime is of course no stranger to presenting a character as completely different from their counterparts in the games, but this is the first one that comes across as completely wrong.

Pretty much confirms that Goh is leaving after 136 lol

I'm not happy about it. So I'm gonna rant about it on tumblr dot com.

Goh deserved better. As a character. He got one of the most unsatisfying and rushed conclusions to his goal. The pacing in Journeys was so poor that both Ash and Goh suffered from the effects. It was a chore to get through Project Mew. I'll say it again and again and again. The episodes were scarce to begin with and the new characters were glorified plot devices. Goh's development throughout the series was to learn not to be a loner, and PM was a good way to challenge him... on paper. But you can't expect me to believe he isn't willing to team up with people when he's done it before. With Team Rocket, no less, for far less. And it doesn't really challenge him either. One episode he's antagonistic to the idea, the next he's working flawlessly with Horace and then with Gary. And the problem never gets explored.

This is all an issue with JN's pacing. They have all these interesting ideas and they commit to nothing. It's not just Goh. Ash too, has arcs that on paper sound good but really? They're rushed, spaced out far too much to leave any impact. We get Gengar centric episodes after we've barely seen him in the anime for over 20 episodes or so, and like, where was he all this time? And it's the same with Goh. We got too much Goh focus in the first half of JN and next to nothing in the second. And it hurts his character. Ash's journey through, well, Journeys was lackluster too. The battles were average, he was not challenged much at all, Leon was more built up with lip service than with actual feats on screen... thematically, the battle was not that meaningful in terms of their relationship as compared to Kukui or Paul or even Alain. But the actual M8 tournament more than made up for it, even though it had flaws. The battles were good for the most part (we don't talk about Alain and Diantha), and Ash vs. Leon, while not well built up, still managed to amaze me. The animation, the moment with all Ash's pokemon... and even the Flashbacks with Leon sold me on it being a grand finale battle for the series. It was well written. It was good. The whole M8 tournament lasted about 13 episodes. It made watching Ash's journey through the series worth it.

But Goh didn't get that. He got 2 lackluster episodes that were slow, and oversaturated with characters we don't care about. Let's be real, no one cares about Tsurugi and Asahi. The only ones people care about are Gary and Goh and Horace to some extent. Groudon and Kyogre were clearly to fulfill JN's quota of "showing every pokemon." And Goh's always wanted to catch Mew? He should have more of a reaction at not doing that (unless I missed it, regardless my point kinda stands). He should have had a few moments where he realized Mew needed to be free or something and let it go. Instead, we got bootleg Groudon and Kyogre for half the episode. And just like that it's over. What was the point of learning all that backstory again?

I liked JN. I really did. After Ash vs. Steven, I wrote a whole rant about it, but I still tried to like it. But now? I can't. I see every criticism of JN that I thought was too much and I find myself agreeing with them. It started out so well too, and it just kept going downwards. These episodes solidify that for me. I guess they're good. They're nice. But as a conclusion to Goh's whole arc, the whole 4 years? Lackluster. Poor, shoddy, meaningless. And I say this because I love Goh. I really do. He's one of my favourite characters in the anipoke. Aside from Ash and Pikachu (and Alola), Goh got me into this show. He deserved way better. I saw someone else make this point somewhere, but even characters like Dawn and May, who weren't exactly co-protagonists like Goh was built up to be got so much more. They got 4-5 episodes to their Grand Festivals, May even had 2 tournaments. Goh got done dirty, and now he's leaving, destroying any hope of redeeming his character. I hoped that he would keep going on as a companion, but it was kind of a pipe dream anyway. I knew it wasn't going to happen. I would have been fine with it if his conclusion had been strong and solid. But it wasn't. And as far as the preview says, he's not sticking around. If he does, I'll be over the moon. But he's not. And to see him go out this way is sad. But hey. That's all JN does anyway, one disappointment after another. It just took me too long to realise that.

Can we talk about the characters of the day from AG014. What the fuck. Why are they so weird. They're twins. Forrest and Forrester, surname Franklin. They both go by Franklin for some ungodly reason. They look identical with only a minor difference in their outfits. Forrest is a ranger. Of the park variety and not a pokemon ranger. Forrester, his twin, is not a ranger afaik, I think he's just kind of there???? They were both born right outside of Rustboro, but both brothers only have Johto bug type pokemon, and we know that Forrest has never been to Johto because his whole episode arc is May inspiring him to travel on his own, because he's too scared to. He admires her strength and independence or whatever, but we're on AG014, May's only been doing this traveling gig for like a week and she is comically terrible at it for the entire first season and a half. She’s incompetent, said with utmost love and respect. She's only got a torchic and a wurmple right now. Forrest admiring her traveling abilities is like admiring a microwave's ability to be an industrial kitchen. They also give him some pseudo-romance plot with her, because pokeani May was out here captivating multiple people with her dumbass swag. Drew, Forrest, and Sid being the canon ones I remember off the top of my head, but also probably Dawn tbh, and I’m like 85 percent sure she accidentally homewrecked Pacifidlog Joshua even if he didn’t actually like her but I last saw that episode when I was maybe eight years old, so grain of salt. What the fuck. Anyways, Forrest’s all "Oh, seeing you all independent makes me want to travel with you guys! :)" and between that and the weird crush subplot, you'd think they were setting him up to be this important next traveling companion. He's set up as this important guy who's going to stick around. Nope. We never see this guy or his brother ever again. Never again. He shows up in one episode, doesn't elaborate on literally anything, and then leaves. Let's go back to the fact that he has an identical twin, their names are Forrest Franklin and Forrester Franklin, AND THEY BOTH INTRODUCE THEMSELVES AS FRANKLIN? YOUR FIRST NAMES ARE ALREADY BASICALLY THE SAME THING ANYWAYS. WHAT FRESH HELL. 

More random facts. He looks vaguely like Kenny to me. He made his way into one of those pinterest edits. He shares a name with one of Brock's little brothers. His ship name with May is Bugshipping. You know. Because of the bugs. He's voiced by ANDREW RANNELLS. READ THAT AGAIN. He shares a VA with Harley. I’m just at a loss. Pokeani voice acting is its own rabbithole that leads you places like knowing that the following characters share a voice actor: Drew, Brock, Scott, that Magnemite from Journeys, Ghetsis, and King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule. Also the red and yellow M&M in the 2008 M&M wii game. There were four voice acting credits for that game. He was three of them. The only character he didn’t voice seems to be the green M&M, which is actually hilarious given the whole Drew and Ghetsis thing. Anyways.

I'm sure I could go on. Pokeani has so many COTDs that are like this (weird). I could talk about the watermelon farmer. I could talk about Samurai. There's Max (no, not that one). Whoo 🙌 salt on! Glad it was cathartic! The concept of “clean blame/no nuance villains” seems to be pretty universal. You pick your favorite blorbo, you make him the whumpe because it’s easier than acknowledging the other side, or accepting the complexity and errors of your personal fav. I’ve seen it often, and hell, I am a guilty party, sometimes I just wanna give a guy a strained relationship with his dad when it’s not that bad in canon, it’s just for fun writing so I can found family him with his co-workers. Or you know, Rose and Leon in Pokeani, that’s another frequent cited example. The people have spoken and they wanna go 🥺 noo poor baby, and have the villain hurt people so you can get more concerned protective fury in there. Just the media enjoyers experience, but I get the oversaturation of it for those who really see into the balance of everyone’s characters, rights and wrongs and perspective, it feels cheap and incredibly misunderstanding the full scope of what makes them who they are to be the characters you recognize and enjoy. Oof, that feels like the DabiHawks writer experience. This is so universal ngl just based off character design stereotypes, I would’ve thought Zhongli would’ve been the fandom fav. Reading all that, I can 100% agree with you, that sounds aggravating as hell. I hope you know some writers who don’t do that. Salting in a group chat about fandom takes is also very cathartic esp when there’s that one person who salts with hilarious energy and phrasing. I think you’re probably that person XD someone out there is reading your post and chugging apple juice in solidarity and pointing going “PREACH!!! EXACTLY”

I like exploring tensions between characters too (I have a series with Childe and Zhongli specifically doing this) however I find that often people don't really care for the nuance of the situation and only like to focus on the feelings of one character. Often it ends up being the one who doesn't often show emotion that is ignored too...

It makes me feel icky when people do that T-T Just because you're not expressive doesn't mean you don't feel, you know? And when a character reacts with anger and hurt, that doesn't mean that they're right! We like to sympathise with characters and their emotions to the point that we often don't realise that sometimes they're being pretty irrational.

I don't think I'd have an issue with this if it was an offshoot of fandom who enjoys doing this but it seems like the whole fandom barring a few will make Zhongli the "villain" and have to make it up to Childe rather than being "both did pretty hurtful things to one another".

I'm always someone who likes to look at both sides though instead of just saying one person is at fault because a lot of the time, they're not the only one whose wrong and or they're reacting to others and how they're reacting might not be the best it doesn't mean the blame can solely fall on them, you know?

I have a real-life example of this even, a friend got pretty drunk the other day and was doing stupid stuff that were annoying my other friends, however I was sober and saw everything go down, while the friend doing dumb stuff was going too far, our other friends had been egging him on. However when people sobered up, they were soley annoyed with that friend doing dumb stuff and weren't thinking why he had done it.

It's easy to pin blame on one person, it's harder to look back at the event and think "actually all sides have a role to play in this". And I find fandom also falls into the same trap when analysing media.

I try not to be salty too often so, because I'd rather not be negative all the time (it's why I slowed down on answering asks at first too, as I know people were venting however I was afraid I was becoming way to cynical as a response). But doing it from time to time is good.

I do want to say I made all of those pokeani/Pokémon posts awhile ago and while my opinions haven’t changed that much, in general I feel like I’ve had an attitude shift about fandom. I’ve learned how much better participating in fandom is when I take things less seriously and just mind my business, which has improved my experience all around. All this to say that I never mean to insult anyone and a lot of my old posts, especially the essays/rankings/etc should be taken with a grain of salt. I’ll always be a DP stan, but people should for sure enjoy XY, BW, etc. and whatever version of Ash is in them. Every arc has its high and low points and it’s just as valid to prefer one over the other.

(Gary anon) I took that statement with a grain of salt because stuff like that don't always lineup to what actually happens in a show. For all we know, it could mean he continues but not as the main, or his conclusion is left open-ended on his part. And the fact they've been so secretive and tight lipped on what's next until now. There definitely was a blow; but somehow not a shock to me. All we could hope like we talked about before is that he gets the best sendoff possible.

Unfortunately I did not. Lesson learned, never love or trust anyone or anything (/joke, I am being hyperbolic in an attempt at using humor to cope, but I will be warier of anything else Pokeani staff says from here on out). Genuinely I got sucker punched, and the shock still hasn't quite worn off. It still doesn't quite feel real, yesterday was so surreal.

I guess it's good to know the best boy is going out on a pretty high note at least. Strongest trainer in the world and he is so loved. Hoping the final sendoff is a good one, even though just the idea of it feels painfully bittersweet.

For PokeAni, it's a three-way tie between Pearlshipping, Ikarishipping, and Amourshipping (definite OTPs in the fandom, especially the latter), and for PokeSpe, it's Ruby/Sapphire. And also anyone with Blake/Lack-Two, who is fundamentally not a romantic, loving person.

14. Don't have one for the franchise that I can think of right now if that's what that meant, but on the fandom itself, I can say that I've long believed and still do believe that the majority of it has their priorities in the wrong place, especially true of the anime fandom.

Bulbapedia sorts episodes into categories, one of which being “Episodes focusing on (character name)”. Using what bulbapedia defines as an episode focusing on a character, I will be calculating what percent of a seasons episode focus on a character. I’ll use the main characters (ash and whoever his companions are that season) as well as team rocket for the sake of comparison. I’ll also be including chloe despite her not being a companion because a decent amount of episodes focus on her. (Information may not be completely accurate because of bulbapedia’s available information, but this is the most efficient way I currently have to do this)

Disclaimers: A) im not that good at math so there may be errors (feel free to correct me, ill fix it!) B) journeys hasn’t finished airing yet, percentages will flux with more episodes, if a significant change is made i may (no promises) update this C) some episodes focus on multiple characters or no character in paticular according to bulbapedia, and im not counting pokemon centric episodes so the percentages will not add up to 100. D) you need to take into account that ash previously had multiple companions and goh is only one person.

Journeys: Goh: 21% (13/60) Ash: 18% (11/60) Chloe: 11% (7/60) Team Rocket: 6% (4/60) Goh and Chloe Combined: 32% (19/60)

Black and White: (haven’t seen black and white so if im wrong about main characters lemme know) Ash: 28% (41/142) Iris: 18% (26/142) Cilan: 16% (23/142) Team Rocket: 9% (13/142) (not counting unaired episodes) Iris and Cilan combined: 34% (49/142)

Seasons Ranked By Other Protagonists Percentage: X&Y: 52% Sun & Moon: 42% Black & White: 34% Journeys: 32% So does Goh have more screentime than Ash in journeys? yes, by 2 episodes. Does Goh have more screentime than the other companions? also yes, by around 3%. Does this mean Goh has an unfair amount of screentime? Argueably, no. Sun and Moon had 5 companions, XY had 3 and Black and White had 2. Journeys has Goh, and possibly Chloe it’s not really clear. So compared to the amount of the time the other companions get, when including all companions in a given series, Goh has average (if not a little less) screentime!

So IMO based on this evidence, Goh is not “stealing the spotlight from ash” anymore than any of the companions who came before him.

I hope this helps y’all understand Goh’s place in the story a bit better =D!

I tried to do the ‘Year in Review’ but it wouldn’t post for me.  It was almost entirely Stargate-related, which wasn’t a surprise.  Though I still need to do this month’s Stargate posts for the blog.

In Shining Pearl, I now have Radek the Absol and since Shriek is fully evolved, I’m now leveling up Cirrus the Swablu to get an Altaria.  Although also fully evolved, Beckett & Meredith are staying on the team.  I got to keep the science trio together!  Story-wise, I have three badges now.

I admittedly haven’t made much Sun & Moon progress, but I have started the storyline featuring Kahuna Nanu, which has been fun so far.

Five episodes into OUAT’s first season, and I continue to have mixed feelings about it, which I expected going into this re-watch.  Thus why its reviews are on a biweekly schedule.  Also, I feel like it’s way more understandable for Cruella & Maleficent to have ‘dark and edgy’ backstories than Jiminy Cricket.

“The Devil in the Dark” was a fun episode.  At this rate, I might be done watching the first season by the end of the year.

I’m mostly enjoying XWP’s second season, but there’s been quite a bit of second-hand awkwardness for me.  Though a lot of that is just because I’ve been extra-frazzled for nearly two years now, and I guess I’m nearing the end of my rope.  :/

On a happier note, the second season of Trollhunters has been super interesting so far.  I miss Walt Strickler, but now Mark Hamill is voicing Blinky’s evil brother, which is delightful.

I’m super excited to see The Book of Boba Fett; Temuera and Ming-Na have an incredible dynamic and I’m thrilled that they’re getting a spinoff.

When you come back to watch the Pokemon anime as an adult after watching as a kid, the thing they don’t warn you about is that you will grow increasingly annoyed at Team Rocket’s very existence, and all the positive memory of them comes from like three episodes while the episode-to-episode bullshit gets forgotten. But it is real, and it is constant, and I think I hate them now.

Two days til new anipoke ep airs, excitement levels keep rising every day :'D I don't even really know what to expect from the ep aside from capture and moments between Gou and Koharu. I need to know why Gou is dressed in school uniform lol, IS he a dropout or not?

I mean.... he could be one of those students who come to study whenever they want lol I mean in the same way Shinichi (from Detective Conan) sorta goes to school when he's able to turn back to normal for a bit, Kagome (from Inuyasha) had large gaps between study days, etc etc etc. I don't think they ever said that Gou was actually a dropout. Why else would Koharu have given him homework from school? Remember, back in ep 2? I suddenly starting wondering about it... HMMMMM.

So maybe Koharu won't be a dropdout and instead will be both studying and join research fellows team for most future trips? Just, thinking.

Ash is never going to win a game League. He just won’t. He won’t, because when he becomes Champion he will fulfill his goal of being a Pokémon Master, and at that point the show will end because they can’t replace Ash as the protagonist (because doing so would mean replacing Pikachu, and they can’t do that because Pikachu---and specifically Ash’s Pikachu---is vital). Years ago there was an interview with one of the producers of the anime, and he actually started laughing when asked if Ash would ever become a Pokémon Master, because he can’t. He won’t. Not until it’s time for the anime to end, and let’s face it: This is probably going to continue on until the sun burns out.

So the fact that some people (not everyone, of course, but certain people) continue to hate on any character who dares to defeat Ash in the League is beyond fucking ridiculous. Gladion has appeared in one episode thus far. One. Yet the mere possibility that he could defeat Ash in the Alolan League---a league that, as of right now, doesn’t even exist yet in the anime---is enough to make some people declare him “fucking garbage.” People are still, as you can see, leveling hate at Alan because Alan defeated Ash in the League finals. Never mind that Ash made it farther than he ever has before, never mind that it was a battle that was down to the wire---no, what Alan did was sinful, enough for him to be hated even now, months and months later, despite the fact that he had one of the most compelling stories in the anime to date. (Well, that’s subjective, but the fact remains that The Strongest Mega Evolution was written specifically to tell his story, and that the idea of adding mega evolution as an element came later. The producers have specifically said that TSME was not written to market mega evolutions, but rather was written to tell a story. That played a huge part in how goddamn good it was, that it broke from the PokéAni tradition of existing to be a commercial.) In the eyes of people like this, anyone who dares to defeat Ash in Leagues (or probably in general, to be honest, but especially in the League) is automatically garbage. It doesn’t matter that Ash can’t win a game League without the show ending, or how well-written the other character is. No, none of that matters, because if they dare to commit the unforgivable sin of defeating the Chosen One, they’re irredeemable trash.

It’s honestly rather angering to me, particularly since I’ve loved Ash Ketchum since I was eight years old (so about nineteen years now), and I don’t want to feel anything remotely negative toward him, particularly since he has received a lot of nasty, unwarranted, factually inaccurate hate from people over the years as a result of hype backlash and a need to hate on anything remotely “childish” in an effort to seem cool. But in all honesty, Ash’s stans are just as bad as his ardent haters, just in a different way. They don’t even really see Ash as Ash, as a character, but rather just seem him as a vessel whom they want to live vicariously through. Thus, when he loses, they take it personally and slam hate on whatever character defeated him, regardless of how the battle went or how the story developed as a result, and regardless of how Ash himself might feel about the battle or result. It isn’t about Ash, not really; it’s about the glorified version of him they’ve built up in their heads to project on and live through, and therefore their own personal feelings of ire toward whoever stands in the way of his glory.

Regardless, I guess we can prepare for Gladion to get the same amount of backlash and hate should he defeat Ash later on as some people are already thinking he will. He won’t be “redeemed” unless he loses to Ash in their final match like Paul did. It’s sad af, but that seems to be the true pattern nonetheless.

Nonny this message is SO SWEET, you don’t even know alkfajd;f I’m really happy to hear that a) you think highly of my girl b) you thought of me/this blog when you found out c) that was a good thing & d) that someone else is friggin pissed about her not showing up in XY. I know that her showing up will be the precursor to like, everyone else getting a chance to shine, but given how many times pokemon has found creative reasons to leave iris out of a group thing, i’m just happy she’s there and getting her due, you know?
