In retrospect, the signs that Jessie and James are intended to read as adults are present in the OG Pokémon anime right from the start, and the fact that they were broadly interpreted as "ambiguously teenage" by a large chunk of the audience for so long in spite of all indications to the contrary says something about suspension of disbelief, I think; we'll readily accept a world of impossible geography populated by flying laser rats, but a 26-year-old woman whose arch-nemesis is ten years old? That's beyond the pale.
