Fandom Trumps Hate Podfic Testimonial!
As a creator, I've only had positive experiences in the three years I've participated in Fandom Trumps Hate. Each time, I've offered my services as both a writer and a podficcer.
Something to remember when you sign up for Fandom Trumps Hate is that you can tailor your offering to suit yourself as a creator. This goes beyond selecting fandoms and the length of the podfic(s) you'll create. You can request that your high bidder choose works that already have permission to podfic. You can specify content that you're not comfortable engaging with. You can tell bidders what you're good at, what you enjoy, and what they can expect if you create a podfic for them.
My first year, I recorded a fic chosen and written by my high bidder. They were lovely about everything--patient when I had to re-record a chapter, enthusiastic about my work, and full of praise when I posted.
My second and third years, I curated a "playlist" of podfics for my high bidders based on their favourite fandoms, tropes, pairings, and podfic styles. It was a fun way for me to get to know my bidders, and a lovely surprise for them whenever I posted a new work.
My point here is, FTH is not a one-size-fits-all for bidders or creators. It's designed so that your auction reflects what will inspire you creatively, so bidders who want you and the fanworks only you can create are able to find and connect with you.
For me, FTH is motivation and inspiration to create podfics for someone who will appreciate and enjoy my work, and a way to contribute to a good cause.
Finally, here is my experience as a bidder...FTH bidders are wild for podfics. I've been outbid on every auction, three years in a row. :)

Podficcers (and podfic-receivers): tell us about your FTH experience!
A few years ago, after we noticed that fan labor auctions weren't getting as much love as some other kinds of offers, we put out a call for fan labor testimonials, asking both fan laborers and FL-auction winners to share their stories -- and fan labor offers have had a lot more takers, ever since. (Don't worry, we'll be doing this again! we love hearing those stories.)
This year, we're hoping to do a mirror version of this for podfics. FTH bidders are already very enthusiastic about podfics; in fact, in two out of our eight years of running this auction, the highest-bid offers were for podfic, even though we only have a few dozen podfic offers out of several hundred total.
One of our goals this year is to recruit lots more podficcers to offer fanworks. If you are:
a podficcer who has had a good experience doing FTH
a bidder who has won a podfic auction (or even someone who has tried to!)
please tell us about it! Let's persuade the FTH-ambivalent podficcers out there that they will be loved and appreciated. Tag us in your post and we will reblog it!

I love all of this and also wanted to add my own reason that might resonate with a few people.
In my work life, getting a win is often very difficult and even when you do, the win is for my employer and doesn’t really benefit me personally. When I make a podfic, I have oversight of the entire project and at the end of it, there is a real thing that I made that is out in the world.
And that is a win and it’s so satisfying
Since @fandomtrumpshate starts up again soon, I thought I would babble a bit about my experience last year! Specifically, let's chat about podficcing. A nice and arbitrary 9 reasons to do the thing below the cut!
Thing 1: It's so much fun! I am bouncing up and down at the prospect of doing it again. In fact, I am planning to offer a slot for any fandom this year rather than just ones I'm familiar with!
Thing 2: Nobody was bothered by how amateurish my readings are, how basic my recordings were, or by the extra whistle and sibilance and mouth sounds that sneaked in. Nobody was annoyed that I don't do accents or intense voicework/character voices. It's something I want to improve in the future, but it's really not necessary—reading a fanwork aloud is first and foremost about making it accessible in a new format. Anything else is just icing!
Thing 3: People who want their works read are going to be communicative! The folks I worked with last year were happy to go back and forth until we decided which works were the best fit for me, and they were happy to answer my questions about how to read/interpret certain lines, etc. It was so much fun to toss around idea with them (even if we didn't end up using them all)!
Thing 4: This is a zero-entry-cost hobby (assuming you already have a device of some sort to read fic in the first place). You don't need fancy equipment and software. You can get the job done with an inbuilt audio recording app on your phone, and if you're in a quiet and non-echoey place, it can sound just as good as something made with a dedicated mic and such. Don't let "but I don't have a recording space" hold you back! Sit in your favorite chair and put your phone by your face while you read me a story. That's really all you gotta do.
Thing 5: In direct contrast... it is a good excuse to dip a toe into gear and software. There are lots of fairly cheap suitable microphones, and Audacity is free. I recorded one short fic via three different methods just to troubleshoot for fun!
Thing 6: You don't have to get it right the first time! (Or second or third or...) I save outtakes (profanity warning!) for the creators whose work I read. Sometimes a cat walked in and told me a mournful tale at top volume. Sometimes the neighbors turned on a leaf blower. You can even get silly with it on purpose if you need to warm yourself up! I do a lot of yelling "this is so silly and I am so embarrassed!" into the mic before I try a serious read.
Thing 7: You get to spend so much time with a work and its characters! You're gonna read that thing so many times to make decisions and to alert yourself to what's coming next. You'll be able to recite it around a campfire and it'll feel cozy and familiar (or, you know, extra painful if it's heavily angsty).
Thing 8: If you play things back and tweak them as often as I did, it goes a long way toward getting past hating the sound of your own voice or feeling disconnected from recordings of yourself. I've always been so so shy and hesitant to speak aloud in real-life conversations. I won't claim that I'm completely over any of those things, but spending time getting familiar with what I sound like in an objective, task-oriented setting has helped me learn to listen for my own vocal cues when I'm feeling too overwhelmed to process other kinds of feedback. I'm much more aware of what my uncertainty sounds like, for example, and am better able to cover for it now.
Thing 9: If you're also a writer as I am, it helps you look at your own writing through a new lens! I have been known to write 50+-word sentences, but now I (sometimes) stop to consider the punctuation breaks. How readable is this paragraph? Where would I take a breath if I were reading? Where would the emphasis naturally end up and how do I change that of it's not what I wanted?
I think people who are Better At Things might not necessarily have all the same experiences I shared here, but personally, I'm grateful for the opportunity, and I look forward to doing it again!
Here are the works I read for FTH last year:
Evil Plans by Sodium_Azide
The Night The World Didn't End by Aethelflaed
and the one that belongs to the earlier outtakes:
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear by my dear friend QuothTheMaiden, who still seems to like me just fine even though there's a terrible whine behind the whole thing (this was the troubleshooting fic btw. Software updated and defaulted to the wrong device, but I picked the better read over the better sound quality in the end).

So happy to have been part of your podficcing journey, Sabsi!! <3 <3
Exactly one week ago I got introduced to the idea of Podfics.
One week later because of the tremendous help from fellow Tumbler and Facebook friends I have a collection of 100!! Podfics on my phone.
And because I use them several times per day my anxiety level dropped which means I haven't had the " extra" afternoon medication ever since.
Sherlock and Fanfiction saves lives Ladies and Gentlemen.
Please allow me a few extra hugs and thank you's for different yet so similar reasons to:
@totallysilvergirl
@inevitably-johnlocked
@podfixx
@a-victorian-girl
@lisbeth-kk
@johnlocky
@bagofthumbs
@khorazir
@strawberrywinter4
consulting_smartass
@helloliriels
You have been all so kind and helpful and some of you made me fell in love with Sherlock all over again because of your stories and your voices.
And once again I feel covered in a cosy orange blanket by this fandom.
Thank you for keeping me warm 🧡😉

so you’re on this blog: but why?
think i’m finally gonna put a pinned post on this blog. here we go.
first off, look at the testimonials under the about section on my main page. if it doesn’t show up on mobile, idk put it in your mobile browser idk. but read that, and if you still wanna be on this blog, congrats.
i guess most people know me from my trash fic for descen/dants. so if you don’t like Mature and Fucked Up [and this is not an exaggeration] topics discussed about those characters, you probably shouldn’t be here.
i also discuss, reblog, whatever Mature and Fucked Up topics about other fandoms, but those are spread out and can be from literally anywhere
my content and the things i discuss are very much Problematic and Squick-inducing, if not outright triggering. i am definitely aware of that. when i call myself trash, i am not being cute, i am being realistic. i warn and tag aptly, probably overdo it tbh, but that’s because i know my shit isn’t for everyone. you see all my warnings and all the tags and you still wanna come into my askbox or whatever to tell me off, well then idk what to tell you broseph
other than that, here’s a thing that’s been on my ao3 but thought i’d put here as well:
IMPORTANT: • anyone is welcome to create translations, podfics (audiobooks), fanart, gifs, graphics, comics, etc., inspired by my fics without asking for permission. • anyone is welcome to write a remix or fanfic that's inspired by one of my works but stands on its own, without asking permission. • if you want to write a fanfic based on my work that doesn't stand on its own, such as a spin-off, sequel, missing scene, completion of an abandoned fic, etc., please ask me about it beforehand. • if you post your work on AO3, please use the "This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work." option to link your work to mine. • if you post your work outside AO3, please link to my original fic and tag/credit me. • anyone is welcome to print and/or bind my works for their personal collection (but please send me pictures cause i think that's an awesome hobby) • the above permissions DO NOT APPLY to any AI-based or AI-assisted works. do Not use AI to do anything with my works or to create anything inspired by my works. NEVER enter my writing into any AI for any purpose, including your personal use

I did a thing. It was a beast. I am very proud of it. This fic is phenomenal, and I hope I managed to infuse it with all the humor and thoughtfulness, love and gravity and sexyness it deserves. Give it a listen. It's a thing of beauty all around. I have offered podfics for the past two years, and I'll be doing it again this year! (2023, 2024) I encourage other podficcers to do it as well!

I'm so happy that I was able to help you, and thank you SO much for the boost!!! And yes, I may not listen to podfics myself, but I am so grateful to have our podficcers here in the fandom! :)
Thanks to the as ever amazing and kind Steph @inevitably-johnlocked I've found loads of new Podfics and feeling so immensely happy I could scream Sherlock into the universe.
I will share this link because I finally found Podfics from the wonderful stories of @totallysilvergirl and because I'm already convinced that @podfixx is by far one of the best readers this fandom could have hoped for.
Among other readers full of greatness like @bagofthumbs @johnlocky to whom I could listen until eternity.
I'm not sure the writers, bloggers and podfic creators know how much I love their work and effort because their work became more important to me than the show itself.
Sending some love and crazy fan happiness into the world 🌎 💗 💕
YOU ROCK 📚🎧

My first time offering podfic for Fandom Trumps Hate was last year, and it went really well!
I had initially hesitated to sign up because I didn't think anyone would bid on lil ole me, but two things happened to change my mind. First, the FTH mods put out a call that they were juuuust short of 1000 offers. Like many podficcers I have a weakness for big shiny stats numbers so was immediately tempted. Second, I made a pact with a friend who was also a first time FTH-offerer to bid on each other if no one else did (we both were won by other bidders in the end <3).
The whole process was so smooth, signups were a breeze (except deciding on fandoms, so many fun options), my winning bidders were both lovely, the mods have gentle and well-timed follow-ups, and the bidding period itself was exhilarating.
I really recommend the experience, it was very fulfilling. I definitely am planning to contribute again this year!
I also won three auctions for other podficcers' works, and all of them made lovely gifts, I've had such fun listening to them over and over. I love our community. <3
