and I know for a fact that every deep conversation, every song, every book, every walk in nature, every ten second reflection while the coffee brews, every cry session, every laugh, every notes app rant, and every indulgence is revealing the next layer of yourself that you haven't met yet. and sometimes that is scary, other times beautiful — yet very necessary so that your soul and mind and belief is challenged and it rebirths itself with much more clear sense of what you are.

it terrifies me how doom scrolling is going to delay this process in most of us.

if we're looking at the magnus archives through the lens of addiction parallels, jon's descent is wonderfully done.

and it's almost even more interesting to look at the magnus protocol through the lens of addiction as well.

it's almost as if alice is a recovering addict, she hasn't had a tobacco/cigarettes (read: the horrors) in a while but she still works at the smoke shop (the oiar).

She gets her friend, Sam, a job at the smoke shop too because she's lonely and he needed a job. Except, Sam has started showing interest in the products. He wants to try them. Alice is very adamant that they should not try the products and should just do their jobs.

This works for a while, until Sam gets a new girlfriend. Then, Alice starts to feel the urge to relapse. Suddenly, the cigarettes are calling to her again. And unbeknownst to her, Luke is probably also dabbling in smoking and probably exposing her to it.

It's made even more ironic because as they stock their product and take inventory, almost every single product has a big red warning label saying: THIS SUBSTANCE IS ADDICTIVE AND COULD CAUSE HARM.

The Magnus Archives is a fucking pipeline, I swear. At first, I was like:

"I don't listen to podcasts...not since I listened to a few episodes of Chuckle Sandwich...they're far too long...I dont know if I'm going to even finish this..."

*listens to the entire podcast*

"Holy fuck, that was awesome. I'm obsessed!"

*listens to it again, finishing in less than a month*

"Wow, that was awesome, but who is this Arthur Lester I keep hearing of from adjacent fandoms? I think it's funny that me and the main character share the same name...Maybe I'll check it out."

*sees the length of the episodes*

"Wow, this is going to take a while..."

*gets caught up with Malevolent in two weeks by listening to it at work*

"Holy shit, that was awesome, but what is this Welcome to Night Vale thing I heard of one time a few years ago in a passing conversation I have barely any recollection of?"

*listens to WTNV*

"Oh fuck, I have an addiction to audio dramas now"

Post Script:

I've learned that it is very easy to continuously listen to podcasts for lengthy amounts of time at work, given the fact that I work 8 hour shifts stocking and recovering grocery aisles. That being said, if you ever see a short emo guy restocking shelves in a random fucking store with one earbud in, always assume that he is feeding his horror podcast addiction, especially if his name is Arthur. Exclusively if his name is Arthur.

Because there is only one person I know with that name.

And it is me.

liam seems to be stuck in a bad circle and it is honestly really sad: admits he has addiction problems but claims that he is all better now, gets a new gf and a new dog, moves to a new place, splits up with the gf/abandons the dog, spirals into addiction, rinse repeat

I agree it's really sad anon - I have a slightly different perspective on the cycle that Liam is stuck in. I think the starting point is distress. I think Liam is very distressed a lot of the time. He responds to that distress by seeking oblivion in substances. His distress is temporarily alleviated, but he behaves in ways that cause him and other people more distress. Eventually his consumption of substances causes too many problems for himself and other people and he starts a period of abstinence (I assume most of these are proceeded by periods of rehab, but they might not be).

Stopping drinking and taking drugs doesn't address the reason he was seeking oblivion. When he abstains from drugs and alcohol - either he replaces them with some other way of seeking oblivion (exercise has been one that he's mentioned more than once) - or he white knuckles it. But eventually the distress is too much - and he seeks oblivion again.

He's been describing this cycle in pretty much every interview for years.

I hope one day he'll find some support that will help him address the underlying distress. I think until he does, we won't see any changes.

I've noticed a lot of people like to make Jon be a recovering drug addict in their fics and while I don't like have an opinion on that GUYS PLEASE MARTIN IS RIGHT THEREEEEEE!!!!

he's been taking care of his sick mother her entire life I feel like he's absolutely gotten addicted to her pain meds at some point, not full on stealing but every once in a while they'd give them slightly more of her strong pain medication than they needed and he would just... silently take it.

he originally had leftovers from when she moved out and when that finally run out he then started buying it from a guy he used to work with, and so a new routine started: about once a month during that first easy year in the archives after getting home from a day of jon shouting at him he would take one and let his head get fuzzy before passing out on the bed,

In the thirteen days he was stuck in his flat with Prentiss knocking and whispering, trying to squeeze her children inside while he silently sobbed he took nothing out of fear he'd be unable to focus and they would get In

When Tim and Martin stumble out of the distortion, angry and sad and apparently the employees of a murderer they make their way to martins shitty apartment and crack open the strongest stuff he has, Tim takes enough to kill a horse and he takes three,

The day after the unknowing he takes seven. When he wakes the next morning feeling like he's been run over by a bus he silently puts it away in his medication cabinet and goes to see Jon. he doesn't open that cabinet again, the fog numbs him far more than any drugs ever could.

Anyway I feel it would work well with the fact that he was meant to be a web avatar (themes of addiction) but the loneliness triumphed and in a way while listening it does feel like while turning into an avatar you almost become addicted to it, anyway I wrote this in one go so it's prob not very good but whateva:p
