I haven’t been posting all of these, but I have been doing them…every bird I hear with my Merlin bird ID app from @cornellbirds goes into a sketchbook. I have just over 100 birds, so it makes a good 100 day project to draw them & write down some weird facts about them. Headed to Tahiti & New Zealand soon, where I hope to add lots of new birds! I’ve tried lots of different media with these sketches, but what I really seem to like best is a light pencil sketch, followed by very loose blobby watercolor (swipe to see), followed by colored pencil. Beautiful little Cassin's finches hanging out at the bird feeder. . It's interesting how different male and female birds look sometimes. The plainer bird is a female Cassin's finch. . I put out a couple bird feeders since I've been home working so much and it's actually been such a source of joy. Obviously, I like birds, but I've never put out feeders before. For like a week the birds ignored it, but it's buzzing with action now. . Oh, and by the way, don't call her plain. As if there's anything wrong with being plain. I bet that bright purple male is more likely to get eaten than her. . Other birds at the feeder this week have included other finches, pine siskin, a towhee, a hummingbird that nearly crashed into my face, I think just coming to see what all the other birds were fussing about, and some sort of little sparrows I didn't get a look at. Final work in progress shot from the bird stack this summer. To the Wood Duck, I bestow the title of “the most difficult bird I have ever painted”! I’ve painted a LOT of birds, so I’d say that’s a pretty meaningful assessment 😜😉 I swear, not only are their patterns and ornamental feathers unbelievably difficult to understand, every picture of a wood duck looks a little different. For example, in some photos the feet appeared grey, others yellow, others orange, and some were patchy combinations of those colors. Sometimes feathers appeared black, but in other photos they would be purple or green. Never before have I so badly wanted to have a live bird to study. I did my best, and I will announce to all the artists who come after me: when learning to paint birds, do not start with a wood duck! 😂

When You’re Still, My love and I took a short trip out to a nearby river with a series of waterfalls to get away from humanity for awhile. Once we found a quite spot to rest and be still things became so much more real than (my) daily life tends to be. Trickster. Joker. Thief. Prankster. Bully. Animated. Vocal. Playful. Mischievous. Sadly, these birds are some of the most despised birds in the Pacific NW. They are forceful and aggressive, eat just about anything, including infant birds of other species, and don't coexist very well with their neighbors. Their voices are loud, harsh, and unmusical. They are also highly intelligent. The brain-to-body mass ratio of adult scrub jays rivals that of chimpanzees and cetaceans, and is dwarfed only by that of humans. They are family oriented, and fiercely protective of their family, and their space. I don't mind them coming to my feeders and stealing my peanuts. I love watching them. When looking in their eyes I love how you can see their personality.
