Virtual Event Alert! Paradise Systems is tabling with a raft of other outstanding publishers and artists at the Printed Matter Virtual Art Book Fair! We fondly remember claustrophobic days spent in the zine tent at PS1 shooting the breeze, but for now we're taking part in this system of interconnected web pages. We have some special new items available now, including Matchmaker's Market by Sadan! More on those soon, but if you're curious, you can check them out on our website now.
Our table at PMVABF

It’s only the first day of the virtual New York Art Book Fair and just like the ones I’ve attended in person I’m on cloud nine, giddy and exhilarated and inspired.
Because I watched a presentation on a publishing project I’d never heard of I found out about an artist I never heard and already I feel her deep in my soul as an artist mentor/godmother/soulmate. TAKAKO SAITO! (She was a member of Beau Geste Press, that publishing project that I also want to devour.)
Already I’ve purchased an exhibit catalog for a show she had a few years ago...Powell’s had a copy in their remote warehouse so I can even pick it up in my neighborhood!
Also, the first presentation of the day was one that I was hesitant to attend even though I consider it’s presenter to also be a creative soulmate, Dayanita Singh. And that did not disappoint either! I didn’t intend to take notes, planning to just sit and soak in the 1.5 hours of her chatting with the director of Offset Press in India. But what she was saying was resonating so deeply that I had to grab my Notes pad and write it all down.
Her approach to photo editing was refreshing, a contrast to more traditional (and possibly, masculine?) approaches.
She sees book building as part of the process, “…a way of engaging with your material, engaging with photography. Using the aspects of making a book to understand your material more in an analog way. I don’t feel the same thing happens on a computer unless you’re wanting to make a website. The physicality of cutting [paper]...makes you engage with them photos.”
I don’t want to forget to mention this incredible point she made:
If her books are in the library, they can be borrowed; but if they are in the gallery or museum, they cannot be borrowed and studied by people. In fact, moments before the program began, the curator of the series, David Senior, popped into the Zoom room and she asked about the location of her book objects at SFMOMA, pushing him to consider and acknowledge the isolation of museum objects. God, I love how she PUSHES and she does it without remorse or giggling.
PS: It occurs to me that finding a creative forbearer is earth-shattering because somehow it gives me permission to mine that latent idea/project/thought/spark and move forward with it. It’s like the knowledge of that person existing lives in me and they keep me company.

ERIC RHEIN
In his new book, the southern writer and artist channels the unknown and documents the intergenerational experience of HIV.

Eric Rhein: Lifelines
is a unique monograph-memoir spanning three decades of the artist’s life and work. The book features intimate photographs taken between 1989 and 2012. These include self-portraits and images of friends and lovers from the period between Rhein’s HIV diagnosis, his near death, and the eventual vitality that new medications would afford him. As a personal response to the AIDS crisis, these compelling portraits highlight tenderness and care as life-saving instincts. The book also includes watercolors, delicate assemblages, and wire drawings, notably his ongoing project "Leaves," an AIDS memorial honoring over 300 individuals that Rhein knew.
Rhein’s work embodies love, touch, connection to nature, and familial history. The artist draws from his Kentucky roots and his relationship with his uncle Lige Clarke—gay rights pioneer of the 1960s and 70s—as inspiration for his art and activism. Rhein mines collective and personal narratives, formulating pieces that are at once poetic and documentarian. Along with Rhein’s text, the book also features essays by National Book Award-winning poet Mark Doty, and former Institute 193 Director Paul Michael Brown. Of Rhein’s work, Mark Doty writes, “These images affirm the desiring self at a moment when desire had become dangerous...”
Only during PMVABF, we are including a postcard signed by Eric Rhein in each copy of Lifelines purchased.
Description: 112 pages, 84 images reproduced in full color Dimensions: 9 inches x 9.75 inches Publisher: Institute 193 Press ISBN-13: 9781732848238

Images from 'Adam Pendleton: Our Ideas' published by @pacegallery — Signed copies available at Artbook Stores Virtual Booth @printedmatter_artbookfairs !! The work of New York–based artist @pendleton.adam is animated by what he calls “Black Dada,” a critical articulation of blackness, abstraction and the avant-garde. Drawing from an archive of language and images, Pendleton makes collages, paintings, videos and other objects that seek to reconfigure received histories of culture. This catalog, accompanying Pendleton’s 2018 solo exhibition at Pace London, brings together new work from his various ongoing series: the Black Dada paintings and drawings, System of Display, Untitled (A Victim of American Democracy), paintings and wall works, a video portrait of Yvonne Rainer and a monumental group of 68 works on Mylar, in which certain recurring features—photographs relating to modernism in Africa, ceramics and African masks, fragments from the pages of books and Pendleton’s own drawings—are recombined with cut-up phrases and marks, weaving contemporary and historical references into a single body of work. The book includes a text by the artist, essays from Suzanne Hudson and Alec Mapes-Frances, and a conversation between Pendleton and @why80rainer moderated by Adrienne Edwards. Visit our virtual booth via linkinbio! Booksellers from @artbookps1 & @artbookhwla will be on live chat 12-8PM today through Sunday to discuss this and other choice titles! @suzanne.hudson.50 @adynyc #adampendleton #signedcopy #pmvabf https://www.instagram.com/p/CLzFA5xpxKk/?igshid=177rs0asxszr8
